he 2014-15 school year promises to be one of the best yet. This is my fourth year serving as the Vintage High School Athletic Director, and I couldn't be happier with what we have grown

at Vintage High School. This year's senior class is a great example of that growth as I have personally witnessed all of our senior-athletes become wonderful student-leaders since they first stepped foot on the Vintage campus. They have grown both physically, as well as emotionally over the last three years and I couldn't be more proud of the way that they represent the Burgundy and Gold.

Being part of the Vintage Athletic Community is a terrific opportunity for all Crushers. We offer team experiences that are unrivaled by any other school in the valley - our coaches promote the concept of "family" where words such as in-tegrity, accountability and honesty aren't just talked about, but believed in. I am proud of the Vintage Crusher Athletic Department and all the people that contribute to its suc-cess. It's not only the athletes and their respective families, but also the generations of Crusher Faithful that make up Crusher Nation. Thank you for supporting our great school!

We’re going to keep working hard this year to provide our fans with a great way to spend their afternoons/evenings: watching the Crusher athletes perform at a very high level. Whether it be at Memorial Stadium, the pool, the gymnasi-um, the tennis courts, the baseball/softball fields, the track, or the golf course, we are ready to compete with any team in our league and/or section.

Crusher Pride. Fight on!

or over 40 years, the Vintage High School athletic program has com-peted at an extremely high level, not only in the Monticello Empire League (MEL), but also in the very

competitive Sac-Joaquin Section, the third largest section in the state of California that comprises over 51 schools. The Vintage High School athletic program is rich in epic competitive battles where our students have showcased his or her athletic talents and sportsmanship. We are very proud of the athletic tradition that has been established at Vintage and embrace values such as dedica-tion, commitment, sacrifice, competitiveness

and winning with dignity, honor and class. Over 700 students annually compete at

Vintage High School in sports ranging from football, tennis, volleyball, swimming, water polo, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, cross county, track and field, golf, soccer and badminton. Not only do these athletes compete at extremely high levels, spending countless hours practicing their skill, these same individuals excel and compete aca-demically, recognizing that a rigorous high school education will be his or her avenue to a prosperous life.

I understand the tradi-tion Vintage students have maintained on the field/court, in the class-room and in the com-munity. Today’s Vintage student athletes main-tain this same focus because they too appre-ciate and value the tradition established when Vintage High School opened in 1972.

Our athletes performed very well during the 2013-14 season, leaving us very optimistic for the upcoming season. MEL titles were won in Girl’s Volleyball, Girl’s Waterpolo, Boy’s Waterpolo, Boy’s Soccer, Girl’s Swimming/Diving and Girl’s Soccer while numerous other sports placed either second or third in the MEL, which garnered Vintage a second place for the MEL School of the Year, an im-provement over the previous year. In addition, several team sports went deep in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs (Volleyball, Boy’s Soccer, Girl’s Soccer), while boy’s and girl’s wrestlers, boy’s and girl’s swimmer/divers

as well as track and field athletes were quite successful for individual titles in the section.

I appreciate your attendance at today’s event to witness these exceptional student athletes compete as hard as they can, to cheer, to offer encouraging words and to be a resource when needed. Your presence, whether as a student, parent, relative, friend or just a fan of Vintage High School reflects your passion to be part of Crusher Nation. Thank you for contributing to the greatness of Vintage High School, The Home of the Crushers!!!

Dear Crusher Family,It is with great honor that I welcome you to

the 2014 Vintage Football season. It is such a privilege and blessing to be entering my sec-ond season and leading Vintage Football into this exciting future as the head football coach. We expect to be a part of the academic and athletic success that has been rapidly grow-ing here at Crusher Nation. The administra-tion, led by our Principal Mike Pearson and Athletic Director Cam Neal, has provided re-markable support to make sure these goals will be accomplished. We have also received superior support from our Vintage Athletic Booster Club (VABC), led by Andy Kuehnel and Robin Jankiewicz. Our coaching staff on all three levels has been “all in” and fully com-mitted to the future success of the Vintage football players on and off the field. We can proclaim with the upmost confidence that we are reestablishing the championship culture here at Vintage.

It is our responsibility to develop these young men into great men of great character. We believe we achieve this by embracing our 4 core values: Always have a positive attitude, have an Unbelievable work ethic, Compete Relentlessly at everything we do, and Sacri-fice more than others are willing. We hope you join us each and every week as we strive to reach our goals. GO CRUSHERS! FIGHT ON!

Quarterback (QB)The player who receives the ball from the center at the start of each play before either handing it to the running back, throwing it to a receiver, or running with it himself. The quarterback is usually the player in charge of running the offense on the field. He is also the guy that usually informs the offense of the play while in the huddle.

Center (C)The offensive lineman who hikes (or snaps) the ball to the quarterback at the start of each play. The center lines up in the middle of the offensive line, between the offensive guards.

Tight End (TE)An offensive player who serves as a receiver and also a blocker. The tight end lines up beside the offensive tackle either to the right or to the left of the quarterback.

Wide Receiver (WR)An offensive player who lines up on or near the line of scrimmage, but split to the outside. His primary job is to catch passes from the quarterback.

Fullback (FB)An offensive player who lines up in the offensive backfield and generally is responsible for run-blocking for the halfback and pass-blocking for the quarterback. Fullbacks are usually bigger than halfbacks, and also serve as short-yardage runners.

Running Back (RB)An offensive player who lines up in the backfield and generally is responsible for carrying the ball on run plays. A running back’s primary role is to run with the football, he is also used as a receiver at times.

Offensive Tackle (LT/RT)A member of the offensive line. There are two tackles on every play, and they line up on the outside of the offensive guards.

Guard (LG/RG)A member of the offensive line. There are two guards on every play, and they line up on either side of the offensive center.

Page 21: 2014 Vintage High School Football Media Guide

Cornerback (CB)A defensive back who generally lines up on the outside of the formation and is usually assigned to cover a wide receiver.

Safety (SS/FS)A defensive back who lines up in the secondary between, but generally deeper than the cornerbacks. His primary duties include helping the cornerbacks in pass coverage. There are actually two safety positions; the free safety and strong safety.

Defensive End (DE)A defensive player who lines up at the end of the defensive line. The job of the defensive end is to contain the running back on running plays to the outside, and rush the quarterback on passing plays.

Defensive Tackle (DT)A defensive player who lines up on the interior of the defensive line. The duties of a defensive tackle include stopping the running back on running plays, getting pressure up the middle on passing plays, and occupying blockers so the linebackers can roam free.

Nose Tackle (NT)A defensive tackle who lines up directly across from the center. Also known as the nose guard, the primary responsibilities of the nose tackle are to stop the run and occupy the offensive lineman to keep them from blocking the linebackers.

Linebacker (LB)A defensive player who lines up behind the defensive linemen and in front of the defensive backfield. The linebackers are a team’s second line of defense. Each team has two outside linebackers. In a 4-3 defense, teams have one inside linebacker, which is usually referred to as a middle linebacker. In a 3-4 defense teams have two inside linebackers.

1. What is the NCAA Clearinghouse? The NCAA Clearinghouse is the organization that determines whether a student-athlete will be eligible for the Division I or Division II level.

2. How important is a highlight tape and participation in football camps? Both are important. Put your very best plays on tape (nobody wants to watch a one minute highlight) and make sure coaches have access to game film. The most important football camps are those put on by the coaching staff of a school or camps where the coaching staff is going to attend. The camps put on by recruiting services are good for getting measured and having your speed tested, but coaches want to see you work out in person.

3. What role can a high school coach take in the recruiting process?A high school coach can be very helpful in setting up appointments with recruits and letting college coaches know what your practice schedules are.

4. How important are grades and test scores as they relate to college eligibility?Grades and test scores are possibly the most important. You could be the top recruit in the country, but if coaches don’t think you are going to qualify, they will stay away.

5. What is the first step a college would take if they're interested in a player? They will usually try to get into contact with the coach to find out more about the student-athlete. They will also try to find them on a social media website, such as Facebook or Twitter.

6. How does a recruiting trip work?Unofficial visit: the recruit pays for his own trip to campus, which will usually involve a campus and facilities tour. Official visit: the school pays for the recruit to take a visit. This will take place over 48 hours (usually during the season) and the recruit will take tours, meet with staff involved in the program, spend one-on-one time with coaches and spend time with players on the team.

7. How binding is a verbal commitment? There is nothing binding until the Letter of Intent is signed.

8. When is a preferred walk-on date?Usually a walk-on is invited to come to the start of fall camp in August.

9. What can a player do to better their chances at playing at the next level?Have a mid- and post-season highlight tape. Go to schools’ camps and work out for them. Identify which schools have a genuine interest in you and for which ones you can play.

10. How has social media changed the football recruiting process? It has made contacting the recruits so much easier. Between the social media sites and websites such as Hudl, the recruiting process has been sped up greatly—what used to take 2 weeks now takes 2 hours. Social media can also help us identify which kids to stay away from. If they don’t seem like a good person on Twitter or Facebook, odds are they aren’t the guy for us.

We sat down with a Division I college coach and asked him 10 questions that any high school player needs to know in order to play at the next level.

The word is starting to get out about Jared Horn, Vintage High School’s returning starting quarterback.

Good size at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. Very good arm strength. Great leader. Accurate with his throws.

“Just in the past year, he has matured a lot at the quarterback posi-tion, in terms of understanding the route concepts and reading cov-erages, anticipating and throwing the ball early,” said Vintage coach Kyle Hofmann.

NorthBayPreps.com ranks Horn, who will be a junior in the fall, as

the No. 2 quarterback in Napa, Sonoma, So-lano and Marin counties. He is also listed in the NorthBayPreps.com Underclass Top 15.

Five schools – Stanford, UC Berkeley, Fres-no State, Washington and San Jose State – have expressed interest in Horn. They have contacted Hofmann, with school representa-tives visiting Vintage to meet with Horn.

“They’re obviously real impressed with his size and stature,” said Hofmann. “They’ve watched his video and they like him a lot.”

Horn was only able to be at spring practice for a week in May, due to his commitment to the baseball team. But he was very impres-sive in the 40-minute, 7 on 7 burgundy and gold spring game at Napa Memorial Stadium, completing 18 of 25 passes and throwing six touchdown passes.

“He did real well,” said Hofmann.Last month, Horn was invited and took part

in an elite 11 quarterback camp at Chabot College-Hayward.

“He’s a very down-to-earth, humble, ma-ture young man,” said Hofmann. “He doesn’t let success or failure get to his head. He’s real level-headed. The kids respond to him.”BUSY SUMMER AHEAD FOR CRUSHERS

Vintage will test its offense in a local pass-ing league — which also involves Napa, Justin-Siena and St. Helena — on Tuesday nights during the summer. The Crushers are entered in a passing tournament on Saturday

at Menlo College and in another tournament on June 28 at Vacaville High.

They will go to a full-padded team camp from June 23-27 at Monterey Trail-Elk Grove. Fifty-two players will attend the camp for Vin-tage, which was 5-5 overall, tying for second place in the Monticello Empire League last year, Hofmann’s first season as coach.

Burbank-Sacramento, Inderkum-Sacra-mento, McNair-Stockton and Cordova-Ran-cho Cordova will also be at the camp.

The Crushers will practice for two hours as a team in the morning, then scrimmage against other teams in the afternoon.

“It gives us a chance to implement some of our schemes, our systems,” said Hofmann. “It gives us a chance to evaluate in a more realistic football situation, just kind of getting our depth charts prepared for August.”

Vintage’s summer strength and condition-ing program starts today. There are two sepa-rate two-hour sessions.

“We had a real good summer program last year,” said Hofmann. “But I think this year is going to be even that much better.”

From an organizational and systems stand-point, the Crushers are further along now than they were at the end of last season, said

Hofmann.“We’re definitely chal-

lenging the kids mentally to learn these schemes and this terminology and keep moving forward,” he said.

Besides Horn, there were other players who stood out in the burgun-dy and gold game.

Troy Spinelli had the fastest time in the line-man challenge obstacle course, clocking 51 seconds. Alex Hernandez was second, fin-ishing in 56 seconds.

Michael Jankiewicz caught seven passes for 138 yards and one touchdown.

“He had a phenomenal night at receiver,” said Hofmann. “He does a great job of run-

ning good routes. He knows how to run routes against man coverage, zone cover-age. He just knows how to get open.”

Aaron Shortridge caught four passes for 88 yards. He scored TDs on two of those receptions.

“He’s going to definitely help our offense,” said Hofmann. “He looked phenomenal, making real good plays.”NEW ASSISTANT COACH

New to the Vintage staff is Greg Sutter, who is the Crushers’ quarterback coach.

Sutter was at Sacred Heart Prep-Ather-ton last year. The Gators (13-2 overall, 4-1 Peninsula-Bay Football League) won the CIF Central Coast Section title and Northern Cali-fornia championship, beating El Cerrito in the finals, 42-7.

Sacred Heart Prep lost in the Division III state bowl championship game to Corona del Mar-Newport Beach, 27-15.THEME NIGHTS FOR HOME GAMES

Each of the five regular season home games at Memorial Stadium for Vintage will have a theme attached to it.

The Zero Week opener on August 29 against Woodcreek-Roseville is Teacher Ap-preciation Night.

The Sept. 5 game against Petaluma is Hall of Fame Night, in which members of the second annual VHS Athletic Hall of Fame class will be honored. The game also serves as Youth Football/Cheerleader Night, in which the Crushers will be promot-ing local youth programs.

The Sept. 19 game against Woodland is homecoming.

The MEL game on Oct. 10 vs. Wood is Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

On Oct. 31, in a league game against Va-caville, it’s Military and Emergency Person-nel Night, honoring police and fire and all military personnel.
