eview2011 Season Preview

After posting an 8-2 season in 2010, the Bridgewater Eagles football team will have to answer a number of key questions as the Eagles look to head back to the summit of the Old Dominion Ath-letic Conference mountain for the first time in six years in 2011.

Bridgewater’s offense returns a number of veterans along its front, but replacing a three-year starter behind center and an All-American wide receiver will be a task that the Eagles haven’t faced in some time. On the defensive side of the ball, the front four returns, but the Eagles will see a new linebacking corps and a number of new faces in the secondary when they take the field on September 3.

On a positive note, veteran leadership should not be an issue for the Eagles with more than half a dozen fifth-year seniors returning to the roster for the 2011 season.

Question number one looms at arguably the most important offensive position – How to re-place a three-year starting quarterback who had a banner year in 2010?

Bridgewater returns a pair of quarterbacks to the fray in 2011 in senior Jacob Hutchinson and junior Carlos Gonzalez. Last season, Gonzalez took the majority of the snaps on the second team while Hutchinson recovered from offseason surgery. Gonzalez brings a Division I arm to the mix, while Hutchinson brings the wheels to an offense that head coach Michael Clark wants to have a more up-tempo approach this season.

“We still have to maintain a degree of flexibility in our offensive alignment just because we aren’t sure who our quarterback is going to be yet, but we came out of spring ball knowing that we will have quality players competing for the position,” said head coach Michael Clark, who enters his 17th year at the helm. “Ideally one of the three guys competing for the position will become a no-brainer for us, like what happened last year with Hagan (Driskell).”

In the backfield, the Eagles will return a number of talented players, including 2010 leading rusher Darrin McKenzie and fullback Ryan Richmond. McKenzie barreled for a career-best 219 yards at Guilford en route to a 928 yard season on the ground as he exploded to become the premiere tail-back in the middle of the 2010 season. Offseason surgery sidelined Richmond for the entire 2010 season after the Fredericksburg, Va. native became a prime receiving option out of the backfield in 2009. Sophomore Nick Wimer also returns after being the premiere fullback a season ago.

Question number two looms when you look to the wide receiving corps – How do you replace an All-American and the best statistical wide receiver in school history, Tyler Beiler?

The Eagles will turn to a number of options to replace Beiler and fellow graduate Keenan Tillar. Primarily, the Eagles return Leigh Bradley to the mix, after Bradley missed the 2010 season due to a nagging injury. Senior Julius Delbridge also returns after becoming an option on the edge in 2010. Delbridge hauled in 15 passes for 173 yards and a score for the Eagles a season ago, and will be looked upon to expand his role in 2011.

At the tight ends spot, the Eagles return Justin Bingham who started all 10 games last season,

Replacing three-year starter Hagan Driskell is the first task on Coach Clark’s list as the 2011 season looms.

and junior Cord Keating. Bingham and the rest of the tight ends will be under new direction as assistant coach Christopher Haw-ley takes the reins.

“We bring some things back on the offensive side period that will support a new quarterback. We have experienced depth at a number of positions. We have some fifth-year players coming back, who really took support roles last season and we could have some hidden gems among our young players who could create some great balance for us offensively,” said Clark.

Bridgewater’s offensive line will be a major factor for the Eagles as the unit returns nearly everyone from the 2010 sea-son, including ODAC first team selection, George Sheaffer. The offensive line returns 24 combined starts from the 2010 season, with projected starting right tackle Kyle Keister being the lone projected starter without a start a season ago.

Switching to the defensive side of the ball, the Bridgewater front four will again be a major strength for a defense that was near the top of the ODAC in 2010. The Eagles projected defen-sive front four returns 38 combined starts from the 2010 season and boasts D3Football.com All-Region defensive end Dominic

Jeter, 2010 ODAC second teamer Stephen Howard and ODAC honorable mention selection Joel Francis.

Along the defensive line, the Eagles will also be under new leadership as former Clemson defen-sive lineman Etta Tawo takes over the day-to-day coaching duties.

“Anytime you gain control of the line of scrimmage, in a subtle way we can develop an element of control that the fans seldom recognize, but can be vital in winning games. It’s important that our defensive line isn’t average out of the gate. We return seven of our top eight defensive linemen. So our returning depth will be key,” said Clark of his experienced defensive front four.

In the linebacking corps, the Eagles will see a pair of new faces replacing ODAC first teamer T.J. Montague and conference second teamer Scottie Littles. Senior Chris Wholey is the lone Eagle who returns to the fray in the center of the defense who brings any game-time experience. Newly appointed linebackers coach Del Smith takes the reins of the group for the upcoming season after the summertime departure of longtime assistant coach Stephon Healey to Gallaudet.

The defensive secondary will also see a number of new starters alongside junior free safety Jeff Mehlhaff and senior corner Terrell Corley. Mehlhaff and Corley both recorded two interceptions last season to help lead the Eagles defense to 10 picks on the year.

“We have a lot of new faces in the umbrella of our defense, but our hope is that the strengths along the defensive line will help to allow those players a chance to develop quickly into game-time players,” said Clark.

Finally, the Eagles will have a familiar face back to take care of the placekicking duties as senior Will Davis returns to the mix. Davis was 5-of-6 in PATs a season ago, but later lost his starting job to then-freshman Jordan Thacker who will not return to the squad this season. Meanwhile, the Eagles lost punter Thomas Kessler and will look to an old-school approach to fill the vacant punting void.

Dominic Jeter returns to a veteran defensive line after earning D3Football.com All-Region honors in 2010.

“Will had a great Spring and it was really good to see. Right now, there’s not a lot of competition at the position, and frankly, the punting position is wide open. Our punter could be a position player for the first time in a long time, but we have some great athletes who could manage the position. It will propose some challenges for us, but we will make the adjustments needed. Coach Trevathan will have a big challenge in Summer ball,” said Clark

Bridgewater boasts a group of 64 newcomers to the roster, including a trio of transfer students from Divi-sion I and Division II programs. The Eagles had a seven-player haul at the running back post, but its big-gest target position was along the offensive line with 15 newcomers on the offensive front.

In the ODAC race, the Eagles should be towards the top of the heap yet again and challenge for its seventh conference crown. It’s expected that the traditional players, defending champion Washington and Lee, Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon, will to con-tinue to challenge the Eagles at the top of the pack in a tight conference race.

“The ODAC has five or six good teams that if the right things happen, can make a run to a title. I feel that there isn’t a team in the conference that we don’t think we can beat. But on the opposite side of the coin, there isn’t a team that we can beat just by showing up either, since our league is so balanced from top to bottom,” said Clark.

Bridgewater opens the season on September 3 when St. Vincent comes to Jopson Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Michael Clark

Alma Mater: Cincinnati ‘80

Head Coach 17th Year

In 2011, Michael Clark starts his 17th season as head coach of the Bridgewater football program and his 32nd year as a collegiate coach. Born in

Youngstown, Ohio, Clark is from a football family. His father Joe Clark, whom he played High School football for at Cincinnati Indian Hill, is in the Ohio High School Hall of Fame in the state where he picked up 237 high school victories.

Since 2000 the Eagles are 98-27 under Clark’s direction and their 78% winning percentage is the best collegiate mark in Virginia in the 21st Century. In the fall of 2009 the Eagles secured their 100th win under Clark’s direction and currently stand 110-64-1 during his tenure. In one of college football great turnarounds, the 10 win-ning seasons under Clark this century already has surpassed the five the program enjoyed in its’ previous 64 years of competition. It is a run that has included five ODAC Championships, a 36 game conference winning streak, and 16 NCAA Playoff games. The BC post-season experience peaked in 2001 where the Eagles finished their best season in school history with a 12-1 record, losing in the “Stagg Bowl,” the Division III national championship game to peren-nial power Mount Union, 30-27.

Clark started his coaching career as the defensive line and line-backers coach at Murray State University in 1980 and helped Frank Beamer’s Racers to 44 wins in five seasons and a stay in the Divi-sion I-AA national poll for 25 straight weeks. After a stint as wide receivers coach at his alma mater Cincinnati from 1986-87, Clark rejoined Beamer at Virginia Tech in 1988 serving as the Hokies’ defensive coordinator for five seasons. In 1993, Clark moved to Virginia Military Institute serving as the Keydets’ defensive coordina-tor in 1993 and quarterback coach in 1994 before being named the 14th Bridgewater head coach on January 16, 1995.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Clark earned his undergraduate de-gree from the University of Cincinnati in English Literature and was a four-year letter winner in football as a defensive back. He helped the Bearcats to a 9-2 record and a top 20 national ranking during the 1976 season. At graduation he was given the school’s “Mr. Bearcat Award” as the outstanding graduating male senior at the University of Cincinnati in 1980.

Currently, Clark acts as the AFCA conference-coaching represen-tative, he is a voting member of the AFCA-USA Today coaches’ poll, and in 2008 completed a term as the Chairman of the NCAA Foot-ball Rules Committee.

Bridgewater 38 • Shenandoah 31Sept. 11, 2010 • Bridgewater, Virginia • Jopson Field

LATROBE, Pa. - Bridgewater used an 80 yard Tyler Beiler (Ronks, Pa./Conestoga Valley) kickoff return late in the third quarter to open up a 10 point Eagles lead before the squad held off a late charge by the Saint Vincent Bearcats to win the season opener by a 19-14 tally at Chuck Noll Field.

The win for Bridgewater was its sixth straight season opening victory.Following a scoreless, mistake filled first quarter from the Eagles, senior Dar-

rin McKenzie (Rustburg, Va./Brookville) broke loose on a 53 yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 12:16 to play in the second stanza.

Five minutes later, freshman Jordan Thacker (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard) punched a 23-yard field goal through the uprights to push the Bridgewater lead to 10 points as the game headed to the intermission.

Out of the halftime break, both teams remained scoreless until a Sheldon Loughner touchdown pass from the hands of Aaron Jones put the Bearcats on the board, cutting into the Eagles lead at a 10-7 tally with 4:13 to play in the third quarter.

Beiler answered on the ensuing kickoff, sprinting 80 yards to the endzone to put the Eagles back up by 10 at a 17-7 margin.

Saint Vincent wasn't done, as they responded with an eight yard touchdown strike from backup quarterback Aaron Smetanka at the 9:27 mark of the fourth quarter, cutting the Bridgewater lead to 17-14.

Bridgewater recorded the final score late in the fourth quarter, when sopho-more Joel Francis (Woodbridge, Va./Freedom) forced a Saint Vincent safety to finalize the scoring at 19-14.

On the ground, senior Thomas Tate (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) rushed for 111 yards on 25 carries. McKenzie rushed for 55 yards in limited action, scampering for a 53 yard touchdown run in the process.

Through the air, senior Hagan Driskell (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) finished at 13-of-24 for 128 yards.

Beiler led the receiving corps with five catches for 66 yards. The Ronks, Pa. native pushed his consecutive games with a catch streak to 21 straight contests.

Defensively, T.J. Montague (Reston, Va./South Lakes), Scottie Littles (Nor-folk, Va./Landstown) and Dominic Jeter (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) led the Eagles at-tack. Montague was the tackles leader with 10 stops, while Jeter les the Eagles with three sacks to go along with 3.5 tackles for a loss from Jeter and Littles.

For the Bearcats, Mike Kale led the rushing attack with 46 yards. Smith and Smetanka split time behind center for the Bearcats. Smith led the way with an 8-of-16 performance for 101 yards and a touchdown.

On the receiving end, Loughner led the way with three catches for 30 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Anthony Johnson led the way with a game high 14 tackles for the Bearcats.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior linebacker Scottie Littles' (Norfolk, Va./Land-stown) 35 yard interception return with two and change to play proved to be the difference as the Bridgewater Eagles football team held off a late Shenandoah rally to be victorious by a 38-31 score over the Hornets in the Eagles home opener at Jopson Field.

Both teams traded touchdowns early, but it was the Eagles that struck first with a 33 yard strike from quarterback Hagan Driskell (Ruther Glen, Va./Caro-line) to Tyler Beiler (Ronks, Pa./Conestoga Valley) to put Bridgewater ahead 7-0 early in the opening frame.

Shenandoah answered quickly with a passing touchdown of its own when Daniel Wright connected with Rico Wallace from 23 yards out to knot the game up at seven each with nine and change to play in the opening quarter.

Bridgewater took the lead back on the ensuing drive when senior tailback Thomas Tate (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) broke free and scampered 28 yards to the endzone to give the Eagles the lead at a 14-7 margin.

After stopping the Hornets on their next drive, Bridgewater opened the second quarter with a blocked punt for a safety to push its lead to 16-7.

Following the Bridgewater safety, Shenadoah scored the final tally of the half, when Wright hooked up with Wallace again, this time from 17 yards out to cut the Eagles lead to 16-14 as both teams headed to the locker room.

Out of the intermission, Shenandoah's defense held the Bridgewater offense in check before taking the lead at a 21-16 tally with 12:14 to play in the third on an eight yard run from running back Brad Martz.

Six minutes later, the Eagles took the lead back off of a 61 yard burst from senior Darrin McKenzie (Rustburg, Va./Brookville) to put Bridgewater ahead 24-21.

Shenandoah recorded the final score of the third quarter when an Andrew Lloyd field goal from 43 yards out split the uprights to knot the game at 24 each heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

After a dozen scoreless minutes in the final stanza, the Eagles lined up for a 28 yard field goal, before holder Jacob Hutchinson (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) pulled the snap and bolted 11 yards to the endzone to put Bridgewater ahead 31-24.

Forty-nine seconds later, it looked as if the Eagles sealed the deal when Littles ranged to his right and stepped in front of a Wright pass across the middle to put the Eagles up 38-24 with 2:27 to play.

But Shenandoah wasn't done yet. The Hornets engineered a five play, 59 yard drive to inch within seven at a 38-31 score with 87 ticks to play.

The Hornets attempted the onside kick, but it was recovered on the far side by Hutchinson, effectively sealing the victory for Bridgewater and pushing the Eagles to 2-0 on the young season with a hard fought 38-31 win.

Offensively, the Eagles outgained the Hornets by a 333-to-248 tally. On the ground, McKenzie led the way with 114 yards and a touchdown. Tate

pitched in an additional 81 yards on 18 carries as the Eagles outgained the Hornets by a 204-to-30 tally rushing. The 30 yard total for the Hornets was the lowest for a Bridgewater opponent since the season finale in 2008 at Catholic when the Eagles held the Cardinals to 35 yards.

Through the air, Driskell was efficient, completing eight of 14 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. The senior was sacked four times, but held off a speedy off tackle blitz from the Hornets all day long.

Beiler was again impressive with 195 all-purpose yards, including a 93-yard day on the receiving end. The Ronks, Pa. native also returned three kicks for 102 yards. With his 93-yard game, Beiler moved into third on the career receiv-ing list at Bridgewater and became just the fifth receiver in school history to cross the 100 career catches plateau.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Wide receiver Tyler Beiler (Lancaster, Pa./Conesto-ga Valley) turned in a 212-yard performance on the receiving end to break the career receiving yardage record, formerly held by Marcus Richardson. Beiler now has 2,051 yards in his career, becoming just the second Bridgewater receiver to cross the 2,000-yard barrier.

Ferrum struck first in the middle of the opening quarter on a 25-yard dash from Justin Donnelly to put the Panthers ahead 7-0.

Bridgewater answered on the ensuing drive when quarterback Hagan Driskell (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) caught Beiler on a 57-yard route to tie the score at seven apiece.

With 1:54 to play in the opening frame, the Panthers took 10-7 lead with a 29-yard Scott Puschell field goal, but it was the last time the Panthers would lead.

At the 8:39 mark, Driskell caught Beiler on a 58-yard pitch and catch to put the Eagles up by a 14-10 tally.

During Ferrum's ensuing drive, the Eagles defense forced a Panthers punt following a three and out. On the punt, junior Chris Wholey (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford County) sprinted up the middle to block the T.J. Grzesikowski punt, which was recovered by senior Matt Jarvis (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) who returned the ball 11 yards to the endzone to put Bridgewater ahead 21-10.

The punt block and return for a touchdown was the third special teams score of the year for the Eagles.

Bridgewater forced another three and out from the Panthers before notch-ing another touchdown before the intermission. Driskell connected with Beiler yet again, this time on a 38 yard exchange, to put the Eagles ahead 28-10 at the break.

Following the intermission, a lethargic Bridgewater offense was forced into a pair of three and outs before the Panthers chipped the Eagles' lead to a 28-17 margin off of a Marcus Mayo 76 yard punt return.

Ferrum brought the game to a one-touchdown affair when Mayo connected with Roger Smith on a 33-yard route to bring the Eagles lead to a 28-24 score as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

With 9:44 to play in the game, Driskell tossed his fourth touchdown of the game, this time to senior Keenan Tillar (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) to put Bridgewater ahead 35-24.

Ferrum's next drive went three and out before the Bridgewater offense chewed up the final seven-plus minutes of the game to record a 35-24 victory over the visiting Panthers.

SALEM, Va. – In their first return trip to Salem Stadium since the 2001 Stagg Bowl, the Bridgewater Eagles (4-0) jumped out to a 21-10 first half lead before mounting a fourth quarter comeback to post a 32-23 victory over the Southern Virginia Knights.

Following a Southern Virginia (2-4) three-and-out, the Eagles struck first on a one-handed, two-yard touchdown catch from Tyler Beiler to put the Eagles ahead 7-0.

Southern Virginia's quick-strike offense needed less than two minutes to knot the game up at seven a piece on a Zach Garner quarterback keeper.

Bridgewater returned the favor 62 seconds later when a 43-yard scamper from senior running back Thomas Tate put the Eagles ahead 14-7.

The Eagles extended their lead to a 21-7 advantage when fellow senior Darrin McKenzie barreled in from 14 yards out with 10:21 left in the opening half.

Southern Virginia tallied the final score of the first stanza when a Tyler Bowen 30-yard field goal cut the halftime lead to 21-10.

After the halftime intermission, the Knights struck first on a Garner to Brick Wilce 64-yard strike to bridge the gap at a 21-17 tally.

Southern Virginia took the lead with 13:21 to play when Garner connected with Wilce again to put the Knights ahead 23-21.

Three minutes later, the Eagles struck back when Driskell connected with Beiler for the second time, this time a 39-yard strike to put Bridgewater ahead 29-23 following a two point conversion from the feet of backup quarterback Jacob Hutchinson.

Following a fourth down stop from the Bridgewater defense, the Eagles chewed up seven-plus minutes on the ensuing drive before a 22-yard Jordan Thacker field goal iced the deal to put Bridgewater up 32-23, which is the way the game would end.

Driskell was impressive yet again. The Ruther Glen, Va. native was 16-of-25 for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Tate led the Eagles on the ground with nine carries for 65 yards and a score.

On the receiving end, Beiler yet again went over 100 yards with a seven catch, 122 yard performance.

Defensively, Victor Williams led the Eagles with eight tackles. The Eagles held their fourth straight opponent to under 100 yards on the ground.

For the Knights, Garner was an impressive 15-of-24 for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Garner threw an interception at the end of the game to Bridgewater defensive back Terrell Corley, which effectively ended the contest.

Scott Andreasan led Southern Virginia on the ground with 11 carries for 32 yards.

On the receiving end, Wilce led the Knights with six catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Tommy Davidson and Matt Mellor led the Knights with 11 tackles apiece.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After taking the Bridgewater Eagles football team took a 17-10 lead into the locker room, Hampden-Sydney tallied 14 unanswered points in the third quarter as the Eagles fell in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener to the Tigers by a 24-17 tally on Home-coming at Jopson Field.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Eagles.Hampden-Sydney struck first on their opening possession of the game

when quarterback Travis Lane caught Sean Cavanagh on a 12-yard strike to put the Tigers ahead 7-0 with 13:29 left in the first quarter.

Bridgewater answered six minutes later when quarterback Hagan Driskell (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) connected for the first of two touchdown passes to fellow senior Tyler Beiler (Ronks, Pa./Conestoga Valley) to knot the score up at seven each.

Following a set of exchanges by both teams, Bridgewater took the lead midway through the second frame when Driskell once again connected with Beiler, this time from 18 yards out, to put the Eagles ahead 14-7.

Hampden-Sydney chipped into the Bridgewater lead on the ensuing drive when a David Prizzia 31-yard field goal split the uprights to carve the Bridge-water lead to a 14-10 margin.

Following a nine-play Tigers drive which stalled out, the Eagles got the ball back with 41 ticks left and made the best of it, chipping their way down field to the 14 yard line with seven seconds left in the first half.

Freshman kicker Jordan Thacker (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard) split the uprights on a 31-yard field goal with three seconds left in the first half to give the Eagles a 17-10 advantage as the game went to the intermission.

Out of the halftime break, a Bridgewater fumble on its first possession of the second half proved costly, setting the Tigers up with great field position at the Eagles 12.

Hampden-Sydney needed just one play to knot the game up at 17 when an Evan King scamper from 12 yards out tied the game up with 12:56 to play in the third quarter.

Eleven minutes later, Hampden-Sydney took the lead on a three-yard pitch and catch from Lane to Stuart Callahan to put the Tigers up by a 24-17 tally.

Bridgewater picked up new life when Jeff Mehlhaff (Louisa, Va./Louisa County) picked off a Lane pass at the Eagles three to open the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing drive, the Eagles marched to the Hampden-Sydney 27 before a Thacker 44-yard field goal missed wide right, keeping the score at a 24-17 lead for the Tigers.

Bridgewater forced a stop on the next Hampden-Sydney drive, giving the Eagles one more shot at forcing overtime with 3:17 left in the game.

Following a complete pass to keep the drive alive on second and long, a pair of incomplete passes from Driskell was followed up by a Hampden-Sydney sack, forcing fourth down. With fourth and 13 showing, Driskell was flushed from the pocket and missed running back Nathaniel Jackson (Stras-burg, Va./Skyline), effectively sealing the deal for Hampden-Sydney, giving the Tigers a hard-fought 24-17 win.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Following a lethargic first 27 minutes, the Bridge-water Eagles offense found its rhythm, scoring twice in 89 seconds to take a 21-13 halftime lead before rolling up 35 second half points to cruise past the Guilford Quakers by a 56-27 score at the Armfield Athletic Center. Senior Dar-rin McKenzie barreled for a career-high 219 yards in the victory.

The 56-point outpouring from the Eagles is the highest point total for a Bridgewater team since the 76 point effort against the Quakers in 2007.

Guilford got on the board in a hurry, scoring on the first drive of the game on a five yard strike from quarterback Billy Watkins to receiver Ben King to put the Quakers ahead 7-0.

After a rough start for the Bridgewater offense in the first quarter, the Eagles capitalized on the short field caused by a Guilford muffed punt.

Bridgewater’s drive looked to stall out at the three, before a Guilford penalty allowed the Eagles to go for it from the two. Starting quarterback Carlos Gonzalez caught freshman fullback Nick Wimer out of the backfield on a two-yard strike to knot the game up at seven each with 11:18 to play in the opening frame.

Following the Bridgewater score, Guilford marched back down the field going 71 yards in five plays to regain the lead when Watkins connected with King on a 20-yard pitch and catch to put the Quakers back up by a 13-7 tally. Tyler Hull’s PAT missed wide right to keep the score at a 13-7 margin with 9:54 to play in the second quarter.

Bridgewater’s offense continued to struggle until a 45-yard connection from replacement quarterback Hagan Driskell to senior Tyler Beiler put the Eagles in scoring position at the Quakers three. Two plays later, Driskell put the ball in from a yard out on a quarterback keeper to put the Eagles ahead 14-13.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Guilford return man muffed the kick, giving Bridgewater excellent field position inside the Quakers red zone. On one leg, Driskell dashed to the two to set up a 19-yard Jordan Thacker field goal. Thacker’s attempt missed wide left to send the Eagles to a locker room with a 21-13 lead.

Bridgewater avoided disaster following a turnover on the opening kickoff as the Eagles defense forced a Guilford three and out to get the ball back with 14 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Eagles capitalized on the ensuing drive when senior Darrin McKenzie barreled 49 yards to the Guilford nine before powering his way into the end-zone two plays later to put the Eagles ahead 28-13.

Nine minutes later, Driskell connected with Beiler on a 19-yard strike to put the Eagles ahead 35-13 as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

With 13:43 to play in the game, sophomore Dwight Sweatt barreled into the endzone from seven yards out to put the Eagles up 42-13.

Guilford responded on the ensuing kickoff on an 84 yard kickoff return from the feet of Jordan Nelson to bridge the gap to a 42-19 Bridgewater lead, after the Quakers two-point conversion attempt failed.

Less than three minutes later, Gonzalez tossed his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a 34-yard connection with Julius Delbridge to put the Eagles ahead by a 49-19 tally.

Guilford responded one more time on Watkins’ third touchdown pass of the day to cut the Eagles lead to a 49-27 gap.

The Eagles struck last with Sweatt again rumbling in from seven yards out to finalize the scoring at a 56-27 tally.
