District 181 Band & Orchestra Classes

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience private lessons with your band or orchestra instrument this summer!

Classes are taught by professional musicians carefully screened by our District 181 instrumental music staff, specializing in each of the

following instruments: fl ute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass.

Instructor: Professional musicians screened by D181 staff

Date/Time: Lessons are held between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be four lessons, one per week, each 30 minutes. The student’s schedule will be determined by the private instructor and parent. Instructors will contact parents in regard to date and time preferences after registration is complete.

Grade: 4-8 (Current D181 Students Only)

Location: Clarendon Hills Middle School

Cost: $100

Refund & Make-Up Policy: A refund can only be given if the teacher is unable to accommodate a specifi c time request for an entire series of lessons. With advance

notice, teachers will make up one lesson. If a student needs to miss more than one lesson, please make

arrangements outside of the school series.

Broadway Bound 2014

Join us for a week of singing, dancing and staging some of Broadway’s favorite moments.

Students will learn large production numbers and have the chance to be featured in a special way, as

well. The week will culminate with a performance for our adoring fans (a.k.a. parents). This opportunity is open to all D181 students in Grades 4-8 (2013-14 school year). All campers will receive a show T-shirt. Indicate size on registration form.Class Number: M2

Grade Levels: Students should have completed grade levels indicated in course descriptions by the fi rst day of class.

Closings/Cancelations: Classes close once a maximum enrollment is reached. Classes will be canceled if a minimum enrollment is not reached. Registrants will be notifi ed of cancelations and have an opportunity to re-register for another class at no additional charge. Unless a class has been closed or canceled, no refunds will be given. There will not be make-up days for any reason (i.e. weather).

Guitar Fun for EveryoneThis class is for students at all experience levels. Students who have little or no experience playing guitar will learn to strum, pick, and play melodies. Basic guitar skills and note reading will be taught. Older students who have no guitar experience or who have a little guitar experience and want to develop their skills can cover more material at a faster pace. District-owned instruments can be provided and kept at the school. Students who have their own instrument are invited to use them.

Paint on Canvas with AcrylicsThis class will focus on landscape, still life, portraits, and abstract painting. Parents and students will be invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class!

Let’s Get TechieStudents will learn the basics of technology used in school, including computers, iPads and the features available with the student Google accounts. They will also explore programs and apps, such as Comic Life, Keynote, iMovie, and iBooks. These exciting programs can be used to make assignments and projects more creative and engaging. We will also examine apps that can be used for studying and organization.

Everything Study Skills Proven techniques for getting organized, strategies for studying, and so much more are in store for the student who signs up for Everything Study Skills. Using an assignment book, taking notes, preparing note cards, preparing study guides, outlining, and webbing are just some of what we’re going to cover in this class. We are also going to learn test-taking strategies, memorization techniques, textbook reading strategies and listening skills. Students will learn what type of learner they are and in which of the seven intelligences they have strengths.

Reading Improvement Reading is an important component of being successful in school. Students will learn strategies to be better readers. We will read several types of literature: short stories, newspaper/magazine articles, essays and nonfi ction selections. There will be ten minutes daily for independent reading. We will also talk about how to increase reading speed! If reading has been a challenge for your student, or if the student just doesn’t like to read, this class can make a difference.

Write On!This class is for all levels of writers, including students seeking improvement, students who love to write, and students who fi nd writing a chore. There are lots of writing activities in store: creating a magazine, writing letters to famous people and/or writing to companies, making a children’s book, creative writing activities and much more! The course will also include instruction on using descriptive language, spicing up writing with phrases and clauses, and varying sentence structure.

Additionally, they will learn to make historical claims backed by text evidence. Students will need a journal, folder, and sticky notes.

Learning ‘Skill Builders’ # Time Grade in 2013-14 School Yr.

ReadingA reading curriculum will be offered to students in Grades 1-7. This program is designed to develop confi dence and a love of reading in students who are working at or below grade level. Although the content of the material will vary at each grade level, the approach will be similar across the grades.

Students will:

• Be provided with instruction at their specifi c achievement levels in small groups.

• Learn word analysis skills (phonics).• Develop an expanded vocabulary for reading, speaking and

writing.• Learn new reading comprehension strategies.• Become more fl uent readers.• Enter the new school year with a more confi dent attitude
