What’s often missed?

●There is a need for more than ‘Fire and Forget’

●There is a need for Information History

●There is a need to have the ability to manipulate the information

●Reasons for Wonderware Enterprise Integrator:

● ‘Store & Forward’ as opposed to ‘Fire and Forget’

● Complete Information History as opposed to zero knowledge on the

information (sent or received)

● Centrally managed ‘translator’

● Means to provide ‘business continuity’

When to Use WEI?

● ERP – SAP or other planning software

● How, when, why?

●With an SI that understands systems communications

●Use from the beginning of project – interface / abstraction / translation layer

●Removes the need for multiple versions of data from SAP (easier for customer’s

IT/IS group

● Issues integrating to SAP

●Data not in format required for plant floor system or back to SAP

●History and reprocessing capabilities critical – SAP often rejects info for no

reason

When to Use WEI?

●Sample Plug-ins

● Databases

● File (XML, flat file)

● MSMQ’s

● API

● Web Services

● Plug-ins can be written in many ways C++, vb.net….

● Lots of samples

● Extensive training

Value to Customer

●Dairy Company

● Need: Orders, Materials, Acknowledgments

● SAP team already setup

● Able to create XML interfaces and test dual direction messages with the

SAP team rapidly

● Implementing same interface to all Global sites

● Ice Cream Factory

● Need: Specifications, Orders, Materials

● Use of 3rd Party (ERP) Database tool

● Able to create plug-in to interface with 3rd party tool to pull and push data to

Value to Customer

● Food Company

● Orders, Material Masters, Inventory, Quality

● Standardized system for all shop floor systems to communicate to SAP

● Basis of SAP backup system

● Same 35 messages to and from SAP used around the world

● Candy Company

● Data from System Platform and Historian to SAP

● SAP data to MES

● InTouch to SAP PM (requests for service)

● Little to no change to operator experience (did not need to train them on PM)

Planning an Integration with WEI

● When is WEI needed

● In simplest terms “when unrelated systems need to communicate”

● MES, SAP, Oracle, LIMS, Quality, System Platform…

● What data is required for: MES, ERP/Other System

● Existing systems often have pre-determined interfacing methods – plugins allow for

data to be re-formatted easily

● Data may be needed by multiple systems

● Determine the End Points – What data goes to which system and method of

communication

● MES: API - SAP – XML (normally)

● Other systems: XML, flat files, Databases, services (win/web), store procedures

Planning an Integration with WEI

●Determine the End Points – What data goes to which system and

method of communication

● Existing systems normally have predetermined interfaces – plugins allow

data to be reformatted easily

● Common data may be required by multiple systems

●Timing or Triggering of the data

● Time based (every minute, hour, shift, day…)

● Trigger based (event, threshold, limit, HMI button…)

● Lots of methods easily supported – depends on customer needs and type of

data – near real time, time of day…

● Consolidation of data often required
