Dr. Jeff WILLIAMSDirector of Athletics

Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology.

Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration.

Williams emerged as a leader within athletics administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletics experience with the next generation of athletics administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his the leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009.

Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.

Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices.

“I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our student-athletes to earn their degree and to have a great experience as Tigers. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!”

Both Williams’ and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9.

“Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”

LADY TIGER FIELD: HOME OF THE LADY TIGERSLady Tiger Field was added to the East Central University landscape when the team started in 1997.

In 2000? the area was enhanced with the addition of the Soccer/Softball Athletic Complex. The building houses both the soccer and softball team’s locker rooms, an athletic training room, coaches offices, a hitting cage and public rest rooms.

In the summer of 2009, bleachers were installed at soccer field to give fans an area to sit besides the grass hill that remains popular today.

In the spring of 2010, a new Daktronics scoreboard was added to the facility with a generous donation from McCourtney’s Pharmacy from here in Ada.

2014-15 ECU ATHLETIC TRAINERS

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a hand-on environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes.

The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Athletic Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams.

The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.

2014 LADY TIGER SOCCER 11

Bailey enters his sixth season as the head coach of the East Central University women’s soccer program. Bailey led the Lady Tigers to Great American Conference regular season and postseason tournament championships in 2011 and to the GAC semifinals in 2012.

In 2013 the Lady Tigers saw three players named to All-GAC teams. Margaret Glutz and Katie Glutz were both named to the All-GAC First Team and Ashley Bradford earned her second-straight honor by being named to the second team.

After falling victim to key injuries, including both goalkeepers, for most of 2012, the Lady Tigers finished 4-11-4 overall and 4-4-2 in the GAC. Under his tutelage, Ashley Bradford and Margaret Glutz earned All-GAC First Team honors and Katie Glutz and Carla Rodriguez were named to the second team. Bradford was also a NSCAA All-Region Third Team selection in 2012.

ECU’s 12-6-1 record in 2011 was among the best in school history, as Bailey was named GAC Coach of the Year. Three of his players were named to the All-GAC First Team while five more were placed on the second team in 2011.

Under Bailey’s direction, forward Whitney Watts was selected as GAC Offensive Player of the Year while defender Margaret Glutz was chosen GAC Freshman of the Year. Glutz also picked up a Third Team All-South Central Region award from the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Bailey has a 31-49-9 record through five seasons as Lady Tiger head coach after taking over the duties from his sister Heather Beam in 2009.

The Lady Tigers have picked up five straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic awards since Bailey has become head coach and consistently have a large number of student-athletes named to the all-conference academic honors lists.

Prior to his head coaching duties at ECU, Bailey spent eight seasons as the Lady Tigers assistant coach, 1998-2000 and 2004-08.

During that stint, the Lady Tigers went to two Lone Star Conference Tournaments with a runner-up finish in 2000. Also, ECU received the NSCAA Team Academic Award from 2004-08.

Bailey was the head coach at Lambuth University (Tenn.) for two seasons (2001 and 2002) as he guided the team to a 15-18-3 record during that span, including two postseason tournament playoff appearances.

He also coached one All-American player, several all-conference players and numerous academic all-conference award winners. Both of his 2001 and 2002 Lambuth teams received the NSCAA Team Academic honors.

Following his two-year stint at Lambuth, Bailey spent one season as the assistant coach at Angelo State University where he helped lead the Rambelles back to the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time in five years. ASU also received the NSCAA Team Academic Award while he was there.

Bailey has a wealth of miscellaneous soccer coaching experience. He has conducted coaches’ clinics for the Oklahoma Soccer Association, Oklahoma Olympic Development Program, South Texas Soccer Association and the Jackson (Tenn.) Area Soccer Association. He also started and coached the Ada High School program in 2000-01 before heading to Tennessee.

The native of Allen, Texas is licensed through the United States Soccer Federation and holds several NSCAA coaching diplomas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Christian University (where he was a member of the men’s soccer team) in 1995 and his masters from ECU in 1999.

Bailey is married to Shelley (Reynolds). The couple has one daughter, Evelyn Grace.

Erik Solberg joined the East Central University soccer team as an assistant coach for the 2014 season after spending a year at Nicholls State.

Solberg was a volunteer assistant at Nicholls State, where he helped the Colonels to a 12-6-2 record in 2013. During the 2013-14 season he was also served as the head boys soccer coach at Ponchatoula High School and the U12 St. Charles Soccer Club team, which won the Louisiana State Cup in 2014.

The Chicago, Ill., native was member of the Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana track and field teams. Solberg earned two letters at Ole Miss in track and cross country before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies in 2012. He then completed his athletic eligibility at Southeastern Louisiana while pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.

Solberg earned academic honors at both schools, earning Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll and SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades. While at Ole Miss he also played midfield for the school’s club soccer team, where he was also responsible for coordinating, planning and coaching practices. A High School All-American, Solberg was inducted into Buffalo Grove High School’s Hall of Fame after a sixth place finish in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the 2007 USATF National Youth Track and Field Championships. He was also on the 2003 USATF National Junior Olympic team champion in cross country. Formerly a violinist in the Lafayette-Oxford-University Orchestra, Solberg served on the leadership teams at Ole Miss and SLU for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Malcolm was sidelined with injury in 2013, but was the starting goalkeeper during the majority of the 2012 season. She played in 14 matches, starting in 10 and tallied 86 saves and a .804 saves percentage. Malcolm added a 1.52 goals against average and finished the season with a 2-5-3 record, including three shutouts.

2014 LADY TIGER SOCCER 13

The East Central University soccer team heads into the 2014 season with renewed energy and a healthier lineup after finishing the 2013 season with a 4-13 overall record. A year ago, the Lady Tigers started the season with a key injury and had a second hit right at the beginning of the year. But ECU is in a much better position having a much deeper lineup after a strong recruiting season and the return of those injured.

“With the early injuries that we suffered we were behind the eight-ball from the start and were never able to fully recover,” said head coach Riley Bailey. “But having so much experience back in our lineup for this season everyone has an idea of what it takes to be successful throughout the season. Having that mindset already in place with the majority of the team from the start has already shown though in the first practices of the season.”

The Lady Tigers return a total of 20 letterwinners and eight starters from last season and has added eight players to the roster. That depth is expected to create more confidence and a sense of fight amongst the team to challenge each other throughout the season.

ForwardsECU has a total of seven forwards on the 2014 roster, including four returners and three additions. The group includes senior Kourtney Holleman, who was tied for the lead on the team in 2013 with five goals and 11 points. Holleman is one of two starters from a year ago, with fellow senior Milan Galloway. Galloway added two goals and four assists.

Senior Kristina Gonzalez-Claborn and sophomore Lexie DeVore both add significant playing time, while red-shirt sophomore Taylor Kennedy and freshmen Summer Witt and JuliAnne Williamson will push the group.

“This is a pretty exciting group, with Holleman and Galloway having a lot of solid experience,” Bailey said. “The newcomers came to preseason ready to play and I am hoping that will give an extra boost that will translate into a lot of goals. We should have a solid group that we can rotate through the year, which will allow us to have fresh legs on the field and help provide a lot of pressure for opposing defenders.”

MidfieldersSeniors Katie Glutz and Taylor Graves and junior Kelsey Pickrell were key starters in the midfield last year, but they will all be challenged with the addition of three new players (juniors Katie Herrin and Megan Lantrip and freshman Sammie Smith) and two more (juniors Krista Kahl and senior Adrian Fairchild) that saw playing time in 2013. Katie Glutz claimed All-Great American Conference First Team and All-Tournament Team honors after recording three goals and one assist.

“Our midfield is finally going to be a position that will be one of the stronger points for our team,” commented Bailey. “The last couple of years we have struggled in the midfield in a few areas, but I really like what I am seeing from them so far in practice. I think this may be the group that helps us turn the corner and do some really big things this season.”

DefendersThose on defense will have a big advantage as there are six returners, three who were key starters and three more who saw some starts and large amounts of playing time. Seniors Margaret Glutz and Laiken Knight and sophomore Kylee Harper were the heart of the ECU defense a year ago, with Margaret Glutz earning All-GAC First Team honors. The defense was bolstered by senior Jessica Stibbens and sophomores Brooke Hazard and Elizabeth Dodd.

The group of six will be challenged even more in 2014 with the addition of sophomore Cassie Wilson and freshmen Amber Tiger and Peyton Vanlandingham.

“The past couple of years our defenders have been the backbone of our program,” Bailey said. “We have a great mix of returners and newcomers that are stepping up in practice so far this year.”

GoalkeepersThe last line of defense is the lone position where the Lady Tigers have all their players returning and no additions. Sophomores Lexi Hurley and Breeana Jewell and junior Taylor Lowe all traded time in the net, with Lowe earning the majority of time in 2013.

Lowe will be challenged for the starting spot this year by both Hurley and Jewell giving ECU as strong player in net no matter who gets the job.

“We have a lot of experience in goal and all three have been competing very well at the start of practice,” stated Bailey. “Right now I would be comfortable with anyone of them earning the starting position, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks one will step up and claim the spot.”

No matter who earns a spot in the lineup, they will be tested early this season at the GAC/MIAA Challenge in Searcy, Ark. The Lady Tigers play their first two matches of the season against Emporia State and Missouri Western State, to traditionally strong teams.

“The MIAA is one of the top conferences in the nation,” said Bailey. “So it is good for ECU and the GAC to have the opportunity to see the talent level that we could potentially see in the NCAA regional. Being on the road to start the season will also help the team bond early.”

ECU will also see a key difference in their schedule for 2014. Last year the GAC schedule worked out that the Lady Tigers played all their home league matches before the middle of October. This season the schedule is reversed and the Lady Tigers will play their home league matches at the end of the season.

“I like the set up this year,” commented Bailey. “Of course I hated it last year, but I think it sets up nicely for us this season. If we can go out on the road in those first five games and get a couple of wins and points that would set things up for us when we are home for the last five. We have always been a tough team to beat at home so if we can be in the middle of the pack to start that stretch it will give the team more confidence to end the year.”
