WelcomeThere’s a good reason the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing

Festival is regarded as the liveliest and most exciting event on the

crime fiction calendar.

It’s not that the Festival attracts the best writers from all around the

world, from household names to future stars – although it certainly

does. It’s not the beautiful setting, or the amazing panels covering

every aspect of the genre from print to screen, or the quiz that provokes

fierce competition and laughter in equal measures – although again,

that’s all true. It’s not even simply down to the beer. No, the reason is

that the Festival is friendly and inclusive: a vibrant, open mixture of

readers and writers rubbing shoulders in the events and in the bar, but most of all in

celebration of a genre we all love. Every July, the finest carnival of crime fiction in the

world takes place in Harrogate. We hope you enjoy becoming an important part of that.

Steve Mosby, 2014 Festival Programming Chair

Welcome! Every year, I think the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing

Festival can’t top the last, and yet here I am welcoming in 2014’s

extravaganza that offers a seemingly unbeatable line-up.

I congratulate our Programming Chair, Steve Mosby, and the talented

Programming Committee.

It’s ten years since our special partnership between beer and books began,

and it gives me enormous pride that our support has helped it become

the biggest celebration of the crime genre in Europe, if not the world.

2014 is also a landmark year; with our retail partners, WH Smith, we

celebrate the 10th Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award.

For those unfamiliar with why the Festival takes its name from our unique and unusual brew,

Old Peculier is named after the Court of the Peculier in Masham. The court was established

in the 12th Century to deal with local misdemeanours.

The beer and crime genre were always a perfect fit. We’ve grown together. Old Peculier

is now one of our most popular ales - Europe, America, Mexico, Brazil and Thailand drink

our curious Yorkshire beer.

Wherever you are from in the world, and whether you’re new to our Festival or a returning

friend, I’d like to raise a glass to you and give you a very warm welcome to the beautiful

Old Swan Hotel.

Enjoy the friendly atmosphere, the criminally good books, and of course, the beer. Cheers!

Theakstons Old PeculierCrime Novel of the Year Award & Opening Party Thu 17 July, 8pm | Ticket Price: £16

Welcome to the crime-writing world’s answer to the Oscars with host, Mark Lawson. The anticipation is worthy of the best nail-biting thriller – which of the line-up of likely suspects will be taking home crime fiction’s most hotly-contended and prestigious

award? Steady the nerves with a pint of Yorkshire’s finest ale and continue the celebrations and commiserations after the presentation at the official Festival opening party.

Ticket price includes canapés and glass of wine or Old Peculier.

Special Guest: Denise Mina Fri 18 July, 9am | Ticket Price: £13

A rising star of ‘Tartan Noir’, Glasgow-born Denise Mina has been charting the dark underbelly of Scotland since 1998, when the first of her award-winning Garnethill trilogy was published. In the years since, her highly-acclaimed Paddy Meehan trilogy has been dramatised for television, starring Jayd Johnson, Peter Capaldi and David Morrissey, with her Detective Alex

Morrow novels currently in development. Mina is also a successful playwright and comic book writer, the latter including the graphic novel adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. In 2013, she became the first writer to win the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award for two consecutive years, with Gods and Beasts and The End of The Wasp Season. An enormously entertaining speaker, don’t miss this chance to see Mina talk about her career, in what is sure to be a highlight of this year’s Festival.

The Good Old Days Fri 18 July, 10.30am | Ticket Price: £10

Getting published used to be straightforward in the old days – or did it? Recent developments in self-publishing have opened up new avenues for today’s budding writers to reach their public and mean that, for some, SAEs and rejection slips are a thing of the past. We speak to Mark Edwards, Mari Hannah, James Oswald and Mel Sherratt, four hugely successful authors

who have all forged their own separate paths through the shifting publishing landscape. Chair Martyn Waites will be acting as gatekeeper.

Turning To Crime Fri 18 July, 12pm | Ticket Price: £10

Not all great crime writers begin their careers within the genre. Sometimes they’re well-established in other areas before they enter the field. So what is the attraction of the genre? Why did they decide to write a crime novel? And crucially, now that they are on crime’s Most Wanted list, how long do they

intend to stay on the run? Mark Lawson, John Niven, Tony Parsons and Sarah Pinborough talk about their experiences turning to crime, while journalist and arts critic for The Telegraph Jake Kerridge attempts to keep them off the straight and narrow.

In Space, No-one Can Hear You Scream Fri 18 July, 2pm | Ticket Price: £10

When is a crime novel not a crime novel? While the genre is closely associated with the drawing room and the dark alley, a new generation of writers are finding crime stories in more unusual places and producing work that laughs in the face of easy shelving. 2014 programming chair Steve Mosby discusses

cross-genre crime fiction with Lauren Beukes, Sharon Bolton, James Smythe and Lavie Tidhar, four authors who are blurring the boundaries and confounding the categories.

Worse Things Happen At HomeFri 18 July, 3.30pm | Ticket Price: £10

Sometimes the places we should feel safest can be the scariest, the people closest to us the most dangerous of all. What happens when the familiar world turns on you? Acclaimed reviewer and author N J Cooper talks to Julia Crouch, Chris Ewan, Helen FitzGerald and Cath Staincliffe about the

rise of ‘domestic noir’, delving into the psychological depths, exploring family dynamics, and stumbling on secrets, violence and terror that are often frighteningly close to home.

Special Guests:Ann Cleeves In Conversation with Peter MayFri 18 July, 5pm | Ticket Price: £13

It is often said that the setting in a novel can become a character in its own right, and nowhere is that more evident than in Peter May’s internationally-bestselling Lewis Trilogy, in which the chill winds and stark, unforgiving landscape of the Outer Hebrides

becomes the backdrop for tales of murder and intrigue. Ann Cleeves, creator of the phenomenally successful Vera Stanhope novels, dramatised on ITV with Brenda Blethyn in the title role, has explored similarly bleak territory in her Shetland Island series – but with nearly fifty novels between them, there is far more to these two wonderful writers than their most famous creations. Wrap up warm and join them in conversation together, discussing their diverse bodies of work, along with their settings and inspirations.

Special Guest: Robert Galbraith In Conversation with Val McDermid

Fri 18 July, 7.30pm | Ticket Price: £18Please note this event is taking place at The Royal Hall, Harrogate

Mark Billingham said “One of the most unique and compelling detectives I’ve come across in years”, Alex Gray described the novel as “one of the best crime novels I’ve ever read”, and Val McDermid said it reminded her “why I fell in love with crime

fiction in the first place”. But when The Cuckoo’s Calling was first published, none of them knew that its author was not what he seemed. When it was revealed that Robert Galbraith was a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, one of the world’s most successful and beloved authors, there was a media storm and Rowling’s assured, superb crime debut rocketed up the charts. This year, the book’s compelling detective, Cormoran Strike returns in The Silkworm*. In this exclusive appearance, Rowling will talk about turning to crime with the Galbraith books with early fan Val McDermid. Don’t miss an amazing opportunity to see these two highly-acclaimed novelists on stage together.

Let’s Twist AgainFri 18 July, 10pm | Ticket Price: £10

Plot twists are a staple of the crime genre, but how essential are they and what makes for a really memorable one? Alex Barclay, Simon Kernick, S J Parris and Nick Stone discuss how important and effective a last-minute (or midway) reversal can be, how they go about developing the rug-pulls in their own fiction, and some of their favourite famous twists and turns. 2014 Programming

Chair Steve Mosby will be trying to keep up and shout out the spoiler warnings.

*J.K. Rowling/Robert Galbraith will be signing copies of The Silkworm after the event. In order to allow as many audience members as possible to have their book signed, it will be limited to one copy only and no dedications.

Special Guest: lynda La PlanteSat 19 July, 9am | Ticket Price: £13

A prolific novelist and screenwriter, Lynda La Plante CBE’s breakthrough came in 1983 with the television series Widows. Her award-winning career since includes a string of best-selling novels and hit shows, such as Trial and Retribution and – of course – Prime Suspect, which introduced the public to the instantly iconic and hugely influential character of Helen Mirren’s Detective Jane

Tennison. Famous for her meticulous research, in 2013 La Plante became the first non-scientist to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship with the Forensic Science Society, while this year she announced plans to return to her most famous character in the novel Tennison, a prequel to the Prime Suspect series. Lynda will be ‘in conversation’ discussing her career and her latest book Twisted with Callum Sutherland, Vice President of the Forensic Science Society.

Special Guests:Sophie Hannah in Conversation with S.J. WatsonSat 19 July, 10.30am | Ticket Price: £13

In 2006, award-winning poet Sophie Hannah turned her hand to crime fiction with Little Face, which introduced the world to detectives Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse. There have been eight novels since, and the rest is history. It’s an appropriate term, as each story has concentrated as much on exploring the hidden past of its heroine as it has on the recurring police protagonists. Perhaps that’s a fitting contrast with the main character of S J Watson’s Before I Go To Sleep, who can only remember events for a single day at a time. Watson’s brilliantly-crafted and internationally-bestselling debut has won numerous awards, while a forthcoming film,

starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, can only expand its audience and acclaim. Prepare to delve deep as two of the brightest new stars in psychological crime fiction attempt to get into each other’s heads and see what makes them tick.

New BloodSat 19 July, 12pm | Ticket Price: £10

Always a highlight of the Festival, the New Blood panel provides a showcase for some of the year’s most outstanding debut crime novels, and Queen of Crime Val McDermid has once again personally selected four brilliant new writers. Ray Celestin, Eva Dolan, Helen Giltrow and Nicola White will be joining Val to discuss their inspirations, aspirations and – of course – their

extraordinary first novels. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to discover the stars of tomorrow.

The New Wave Of ForensicsSat 19 July, 2pm | Ticket Price: £10

Modern methods of detection have transformed the crime genre, and readers are a savvy bunch – so how vital is research for today’s crime writers, and how do they go about it? David Hewson, of The Killing fame, talks to Dave Barclay, Paul Finch, Elizabeth Haynes and Tony Thompson about

their experiences with forensics, gangsters and police procedure, how they approach their material, the differences between fact and fiction, and how important it really is to get the details right.

How Safe Is Your Smartphone?Sat 19 July, 3.30pm | Ticket Price: £10

From Wikileaks to Edward Snowden, the public has been given glimpses into a world of international espionage that increasingly resembles the most hi-tech of thrillers, raising issues of privacy, security and trust. Chair Hilary Bonner asks Charles Cumming, Terry Hayes, Alan Judd and Tom Wood, four writers of

globe-trotting, spy-filled thrillers, to discuss their work, their research, and how they maintain their fictional footing on such ever-advancing technological terrain.

Special TV Panel: BroadchurchSat 19 July, 5pm | Ticket Price: £11

Who killed 11-year-old Danny Latimer? It was the question on the lips of millions in 2013, as the award-winning television series Broadchurch (Kudos/Imaginary Friends) kept the country enthralled across eight superb episodes. While the detailed depiction of the police investigation was riveting, the series also explored the interlocking lives of a close-

knit seaside community brimming with dark and tragic secrets – secrets we couldn’t wait to see spilled. We talk to creator, writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall, and stars Olivia Colman and Jodie Whittaker, about the phenomenal success of the programme, and novelist Erin Kelly, who has the enviable task of bringing this onscreen triumph to the page in Broadchurch: The Official Novel. The event will be chaired by Alison Graham, TV Editor at The Radio Times.

She has been awarded every major prize in crime fiction and is a recent recipient of the first ever mayor’s prize. She lives in Baltimore, New Orleans and New York City with her family. After I’m Gone is Laura’s nineteenth novel. Belinda Bauer worked for a reporter for a news

agency before her first novel, Blacklands, won the CWA Gold Dagger for Crime Novel of the Year. Her fourth novel, Rubbernecker, has been hailed for taking the psychological thriller into new territory, and her latest is the brilliant The Facts of Life and Death, out now.

Late Night QuizSat 19 July, 10pm | Ticket Price: £10

We’re not saying it gets deadly serious, but there are quizzes and then there’s the legendary Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival quiz. Hugely popular and hotly contested, it’s a chance to test your knowledge of crime trivia from pseudonyms to theme tunes against authors, publishers, agents, and fellow crime fans. Quiz masters and Celebrity Mastermind winners Mark Billingham

and Val McDermid ask the questions to determine who will be waving aloft the genre’s most coveted cup.

Keeping It RealSun 20 July, 10am | Ticket Price: £10

We all enjoy crime fiction as entertainment, but the effects of real life crime are frequently all-too devastating. In basing stories on real life events, when does escapism become exploitation, and how do we know? Chris Carter, Stuart Neville, Stav Sherez and Tim Weaver discuss their approach to violence in the genre, their concerns over where to draw the line, and

the responsibilities that come with keeping it real. Festival Reader-In-Residence David Mark helps them navigate such tricky ethical territory.

Special Guest: John Harvey interviewed by Mark BillinghamSun 20 July, 11.30am | Ticket Price: £13

They say that everyone has a book in them, but John Harvey has had more than a hundred. Born in 1938, this highly- acclaimed writer has been publishing for nearly forty years, including novelisations, poetry, westerns and crime, picking up several

major awards along the way, including the CWA Diamond Dagger for a Lifetime’s Contribution to the crime genre. His most famous creation, DI Charlie Resnick, first appeared in 1989’s Lonely Hearts, which was named by The Times as one of the hundred greatest crime novels of the century. This year will see Resnick’s swan song in the highly-anticipated Darkness, Darkness. Join us to see an undeniable elder statesman of the crime genre talking to Mark Billingham about his distinguished career and how it feels to bid a final farewell to such a beloved character.

Readers’ Book GroupSat 19 July, 1pm | FREE

Are you a reader? Or in fact a writer?Britain’s first Creative Writing MA to focus exclusively on Crime Thriller Writing

Academic excellence for business and the professions

The Crime Thriller MA at City University London is an intensely practical course and over two years students plan, hone and then write a crime or thriller novel.

All our tutors are working, published writers and they take students through the process from idea to sentence to chapter to entire finished manuscript. The tutoring team currently includes Claire McGowan (The Lost), Laura Wilson (Stratton’s War) and William Ryan (The Holy Thief).

Students on this course also have mentoring and masterclasses with some of the top names in the business. Recently that has included Mark Billingham, Sharon Bolton, Sarah Waters, Audrey Niffenegger, Sophie Hannah, Emlyn Rees, Julia Crouch...to name just a few.

And then at the end of the course, students have the chance to link with London’s leading crime editors and agents.

“The chance to have a novel-length manuscript read and challenged by leading published crime writers is what attracted me to the MA course. The focus is on writing your own novel and giving you the tools to do that, rather than getting bogged down in literary criticism. I’d thoroughly recommend it.”
