Workshop DescriptionsWorking with R’s, D’s, and I’s to Win State-Based Single PayerOne Payer States TrackFriday August 22, 7:30PM-8:30PM, California Nurses Association HQPresenter: Chuck Pennacchio, Health Care for All Pennsylvania and David Rabin, M.D., M.P.H., Institute for Universal Health Care

Advocating successfully for the Single Payer Solution requires working across the political spectrum, adopting flexible approaches (Economic, Political, Moral), identifying common ground, building on agreement, avoiding ideological conflict -- and emphasizing quality, pragmatism, efficiency, savings, job growth, choice of provider, comprehensive care, transparency, patient provider decision-making, standards-based medicine, K-12 health education, certificate of need, retention of docs and nurses, downward pressure of property taxes, reduced med-mal insurance, elimination of medical bankruptcy, shrunken workers compensation costs, improved global competitiveness, better health outcomes, fair-priced prescription drugs, mental health, dental care, emergency transport, hospice care, addiction treatment, preventive medicine, vision care, and alternative medicine...alas, civilized healthcare for all...

Working with Small BusinessesOne Payer States TrackFriday August 22, 8:30PM-9:30PM, California Nurses Association HQPresenters: Dr. Stephen Kemble, Hawaii, and Dr. Deb Richter, Vermont Health Care for All.

Dr Richter will discuss the framing of the health care issue in terms that are familiar to the business community. She will present a persuasive discussion to lead a rational thoughtful business person to the conclusion that a publicly financed universal health care system is the most fiscally conservative way to cover all Americans AND  solve the costs crisis. Dr. Kemble will show a short business-oriented presentation, including evidence that the conventional wisdom on the reason for excessive US health care cost is not valid, and that the strategies in the ACA intended to improve health care efficiency and reduce cost will backfire. He will compare these to cost-control strategy under a single-payer system, and show why this is a far better deal for US businesses.

We'll explore our Colorado experiences and look for a lively audience discussion about what other states are experiencing.

Running State-Based Initiatives in Presidential Election YearsOne Payer States TrackSaturday, August 23, 10:15AM-11:30AM, California Nurses Association HQ, Room CPresenters: Benjamin Day, Healthcare-NOW!, Mike Huntington, Mad as Hell Doctors, and Paul Krehbiel, Labor United for Universal Healthcare

With states qualifying for waivers from the state exchanges in 2017, many state-based single-payer groups have their sights set on the 2016 election cycle to initiate ballot initiatives. What has the movement for making healthcare a right learned from going to the ballot in previous years, using both binding and non-binding initiatives, and how would efforts be impacted by sharing the ballot with a presidential election?

Labor and Community Collaboration: A Winning CombinationSunday, August 24, 9:00AM-10:10AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Auditorium 1 andSunday, August 24, 10:20AM-11:30AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Auditorium 1Presenter: Gordon Mar, Jobs with Justice San Francisco

Winning single-payer healthcare at any level in the United States will require a social movement that mobilizes communities and workers. Yet collaboration between community groups working towards single-payer reform and multi-issue organizations like labor unions, isn’t always easy or effective. This workshop explores how to build labor-community partnerships that work, building the movement we will need to win a just healthcare system.

Page 12: 2014 National Strategy Conference - Healthcare-NOW!7:30PM-8:30PM - Working with R’s, D’s, and I’s to Win State-Based Single Payer: Chuck Pennacchio, Health Care for All Pennsylvania

The Health Care is a Human Right ModelSunday, August 24, 9:00AM-10:10AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Auditorium 2Presenter: Matt McGrath, Vermont Workers Center, and Ben Palmquist, National Economic & Social Rights Initiative

The lessons of the Vermont Workers’ Center’s human rights organizing model, which led to the passage of the United States’ first universal healthcare law, have informed the emergence of new campaigns in Maryland, Maine and other states. Grassroots groups are picking up the baton and paving the way for a domino effect of state-based universal healthcare wins. By uniting constituencies and envisioning alternatives to commodification, healthcare is used as a lever to build a counter-hegemonic force for structural change. This workshop will discuss the Vermont model, share lessons learned, and invite participants to join a national network that supports the growing Healthcare Is a Human Right movement in their states.

Social Media for Single Payer ActivistsSunday, August 24, 9:00AM-10:10AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Conference Room 1Presenter: Hannah Roditi, Social Movement Technologies

How to boost the visibility of your healthcare-for-all rallies and activism using social media. We’ll cover tools like Twitter, Facebook, and good ol’ email—with movement examples of what has worked, what is best to use when for what impact, what to prioritize if you’re on a shoe-string or zero budget and are a social media beginner, and how to build and use a Social Media volunteer committee to deepen your organizing.

Using HR 676 to Build the National Single Payer MovementSunday, August 24, 9:00AM-10:10AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Conference Room 2Presenter: Kay Tillow, All Unions Committee for Single Payer Health Care - HR 676

The workshop will explore ways to build the single payer movement locally and nationally using HR 676, Expanded and Improved Medicare for All, as the model legislation that encompasses all of the single payer principles.  What is working and other ideas for what we can do.

Page 13: 2014 National Strategy Conference - Healthcare-NOW!7:30PM-8:30PM - Working with R’s, D’s, and I’s to Win State-Based Single Payer: Chuck Pennacchio, Health Care for All Pennsylvania

Defending the Public SectorSunday, August 24, 10:20AM-11:30AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Auditorium 2Presenters: Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez, New York State Nurses Association and American Postal Workers Union (TBA), Veterans Administration unionist (TBA)

Efforts to win single-payer healthcare have become entwined with a march broader fight against a right-wing narrative that portrays government as universally inefficient and corrupt. This has resulted in funding cuts, a wave of public hospital closings, and privatization efforts (including the Veterans Administration). This workshop discusses fightback strategies, messaging, and how to move from the defensive to the offensive in building an equitable and just economy.

Getting to Single-Payer Through the Ballot: Lessons From Winning & Losing Ballot InitiativesSunday, August 24, 10:20AM-11:30AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Conference Room 1Presenters: Paul Krehbiel, Labor United for Universal Healthcare, Don Bechler, Single Payer Now, Peter Shapiro, Health Care for All Oregon

Legislative barriers to enacting single-payer healthcare reform, even in states with strong majority support, have led many advocacy groups to consider or attempt binding ballot initiatives to win health care as a right. However, getting on the ballot and winning is not necessarily easier than advancing legislation, and offers a distinct set of challenges. This workshop discusses lessons from initiatives in the past, and what it will take to get to single-payer through the ballot.

How the Transformation of the Healthcare Industry Impacts Single-Payer OrganizingSunday, August 24, 10:20AM-11:30AM, ILWU Local 6 Hall, Conference Room 2Presenters: Martha Kuhl, California Nurses Association, Carolyn Travao, patient advocate, and Ramon Castelblanch, University of California at Berkeley

When Medicare was passed into law in 1965, the term “health care industry” did not exist, small primary care practices were common, and the American Medical Association was the primary opposition to universal healthcare. The healthcare delivery system has changed, and is changing rapidly - change that will be further accelerated in the era of the Affordable Care Act. This workshop explores how the changing healthcare landscape creates new challenges and new opportunities for single-payer organizing.

Healthcare-NOW! is a grassroots organization that addresses the health insurance crisis in the U.S. by educating and advocating for the passage of single-payer healthcare legislation, such as HR 676. We support building the movement necessary to implement a publicly-funded, single-payer healthcare system that is universal, equitable, transparent, accountable, comprehensive, and that removes financial and other barriers to the right to healthcare.

Labor Campaign for Single-Payer Health CareWeb: www.LaborForSinglePayer.orgEmail: [email protected]: 201-314-2653

The Labor Campaign for Single Payer was launched in 2009 to coordinate grassroots labor support for a single-payer, Medicare-for-All healthcare system in the U.S. We affirm that healthcare is a fundamental human right and that the labor movement must take the lead in the fight for healthcare justice.  Our focus is on convincing all levels of the labor movement to commit the resources and organizing capacity and build the alliances that will help create the powerful social movement that is necessary to win healthcare for all.

We believe that the time has come to take healthcare off the bargaining table and that the only way to guarantee healthcare for every worker is to guarantee healthcare for all.  We stand in solidarity with workers everywhere who are fighting for healthcare justice.

Just as grassroots social movements won civil rights, social security, women’s right to

vote, and the right to organize unions, we too will win the fight for healthcare minus the

insurance industry.
