2014 Jaguars The NAIA/A.I.I.

The NAIA

The University of Houston-Victoria is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and participates as a member of the Association of Inde-pendent Institutions Conference (A.I.I.). The NAIA’s first general session of the ‘organizing con-vention’ was under the auspices of the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) and was held in the Phillips Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, March 10, 1940. In 1952, as a result of the expressed desires of the member institutions, appropriate steps were taken by which the NAIB was transformed into the NAIA, and the first all-encompassing set of rules and standards were

adopted. With the Association's new name came the addition of national championships in golf, tennis and outdoor track and field. Football, cross country, baseball and swim-ming and diving were added to the championships calen-dar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer (1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964-84), indoor track and field (1966) and men's volleyball (1969-80) were later addi-tions. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character devel-opment.

Association of Independent Institutions

The University of Houston-Victoria joined the Association of Independ-ent Institutions Conference in 2009. That same year the Jaguars won the conference softball and baseball titles and established themselves as one of the top teams in the confer-ence. The conference was formed in 2008 and membership is open to any “independent” NAIA four-year mem-ber institution. The term “indepen-dent” refers to an NAIA four-year member institution that does not oth-erwise belong to an NAIA-affiliated conference. The conference is currently com-prised of 23 institutions from through-out the United States and Canada that compete in 12 different sports. Among the sports are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field,

wrestling and swimming. Members of the conference include Allen University, Ashford University, University of British Columbia, Cali-fornia State University-San Marcos, Fisher College, UH-Victoria, Indiana University Northwest, Johnson & Wales University - Denver, Louisi-ana State University - Alexandria, and Northern New Mexico College. Also, Rochester College, Morris

College, Delhi University - New York, University of Victoria - British Colum-bia, Walla Walla University, West Virginia Tech University, Wilberforce College, Georgia Gwinnett College, Life University, Lindenwood Univer-sity - Belleville, Dalton State Univer-sity, Kentucky Christian University and Antelope Valley College..

Team Notes OVERCOMING A SLOW START: After going 6-16 half-way through the 2013 season, the Jaguars turned their sea-son around going 14-7 down the stretch to finish at 20-23. It was the sixth straight season for the Jaguars to win 20-plus games. SETTING RECORDS: The Jaguars tied two single-game records last season when they banged out 20 hits, including six doubles, against DeSales on March 3. HITTING STREAK: Brandon Bohanon will bring a five-game hitting streak into the 2014 sea-son, while Dylan Blaha is next with a three-game streak.

First freshman class set for final season

Four years ago the University of Hous-ton-Victoria baseball team signed its first freshman class and now, five members from that signing class are set to begin their final year with the Jaguars. Bringing the leadership to the 2014 ver-sion of the UHV Jaguars will be Brandon Bohanon, Ryan Suescun, Cory Carter, Cory Hulsey and Clayton Fowler. Bo-hanon has spent the last three years behind the plate as the Jaguars’ catcher, while Suescun has been a main fixture at second base and Carter has become the Jaguars’ No. 1 pitcher going into the sea-son after starting his career as a reliever. Hulsey has moved from the infield to the mound, while Fowler has handled a lot of the Jaguars’ relief work out of the bullpen. “I’m expecting a lot from my team this season,” said Suescun, who earned all-conference second team honors as a sophomore. “We have learned a lot the past three years, and this year we are an older team with a lot of experience so I expect us to be different and compete in more ball games.” The five, along with two other seniors – Stephen Shorkey and Tyler Vakey – hope to make this a year to remember for UHV baseball and all eyes are on becoming the first UHV team to make it to the NAIA

World Series in May. “I think our goals this season are to make it to Boston (conference) as the No. 1 seed and also to make it to Idaho (World Series),” said Bohanon, who was a second team all-conference catcher last season. The potential is there for the seniors to guide the Jaguars to their ultimate goal as 10 position players and 10 pitchers return this season. The Jaguars infield returns nearly intact with the Jaguars needing to find a re-placement for all-conference third base-man Chad Kruse, while in the outfield, the Jaguars will need to find a replacement for centerfielder Tyler Steiner. Bohanon is the UHV career leader in put outs with 525 and paced the team last year in home runs with four, while Sues-cun did not commit and error in 118 chances at second base. Sophomore Dylan Blaha will also add experience up the middle at shortstop after leading the team with 29 RBI as a freshman last sea-son. Carter should be the ace of the staff as he steps into the season with a 12-14 career record and is the Jaguars’ career leader for starts (36) and innings pitched (194.2).

Brandon Bohanon will begin his fourth season behind the plate for the Jaguars.

2014 Jaguars Season Review

21 2014 Jaguars Baseball

Jaguars finish on a strong note After getting off to a slow start in 2013, the Jaguars heated up and made a strong push toward the finish. After a quick start with two wins over Wiley College, the Jaguars went through a six-game losing streak and found themselves with a 6-16 mark halfway through the season. A three-game win streak against conference foe Fisher College seemed to be the spark the Jag-uars needed as they would go on to compile a 14-7 mark down the stretch to finish at 20-23. The Jaguars were also able to put together their longest winning streak during that stretch with a pair of wins over Huston-Tillotson

and a four-game sweep over LSU-Alexandria, another conference foe. The Jaguars opened the confer-ence tournament with a 4-1 win over Fisher, but dropped a tough

3-1 decision to California State-San Marcos. They then battled tooth-and-nail with Fisher in a rematch before being eliminated in a 6-5 decision. Three Jaguars were named to the Association of Independent Institutions All-Conference team, as Chad Kruse was selected to the first team, while Brandon Bohanon and Dylan Blaha were selected to the second team. Kruse paced the Jaguars in nearly every offensive category compiling a .382 batting average with 27 RBI, 24 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, 74 total bases, 16 stolen bases and a .514 slugging percentage.

Nathan Falken-stine compiled

a 5-6 record with a 5.37 ERA

on the mound for the Jaguars last season. He

recorded 47 strikeouts in 53.2 innings.
