In addition to providing fun activities, the staff is responsible for dropping off and picking up children from their classes. The staff is also responsible for keeping Adventures kids properly hydrated and protected from the sun.

Weekly enrollment in KBIA Adventures is available for full or half days. In order to participate, half-day children must register for a minimum of three classes that occur during their session, either 8 AM and 12 PM or 12 to 4 PM. Full-day children must register for at least four classes.

Weekly rates for five days: Full Days 8 AM to 4 PM $150 Half Days 8 AM to noon $95 Half Days Noon to 4 PM $95

Daily arrangements are available with permission of the Program Administrator at a cost of $35 for a full day or $24 for half days. Enrollment is limited.

For your child’s safety, supervisors can only release your child to adults designated by you in writing on the 2014 Contact Information & Release Form. IDs for pick-up are required. bUndlE UP!Popular programs, grouped in morning and afternoon sessions, for ages 4-10

Back by popular demand, classes are bundled together to give children a three-hour (or, with tennis, four-hour) period of KBIA programming with supervision included between classes. Parents drop off their child at the first class and pick them up at their last class. KBIA provides all the supervision in between, and, new this year, we have added a Bundle Coordinator position to oversee the children throughout the day.

Morning bundle, plus tennisIf a child takes the 12:30 to 1 PM tennis class as part of the bundle, parents should drop off their child at 9 AM at KBIA and pick their child up at Edgcomb at 1 PM. KBIA staff will supervise children changing clothes, eating lunch, and walking them to Edgcomb for their lesson.

afternoon bundle, plus tennis If your child takes the 12 to 12:30 PM tennis class as part of the bundle, parents should drop off their child at 12 PM, dressed in tennis whites, at Edgcomb and pick their child up at KBIA at 4 PM. KBIA staff will supervise children changing clothes, eating lunch, and walking them to KBIA after their tennis lesson.

NEW!Swim safetyOur new Junior Water Safety Instructor class, a daily one-hour course, covers the basics of teaching Red Cross swim lessons, including the proper use of course records, lesson planning, and the skills neces-sary within each of the first four to five levels. Class is instruc tional only and does not earn certification. For ages 11 and older.

lifeguard in Training offeredNew last year, we will again offer our Junior Life-guarding class, introducing young swimmers to the skills and knowledge that are crucial to running a safe pool. Class is instructional only (does not earn certification) and will prepare students to take a Red Cross class when they are old enough.

Team up in the poolKBIA will again offer a Swim Team for ages 9 and older who want to compete against area swimmers. One-hour daily instruction will also help swimmers refine their strokes and help keep them in shape! Children under 9 may sign up with permission of the Pool Director.

Groundbreaking golfThis year we have tweaked our golf classes to suit different abilities.

• beginner Golf: Our young golfers will enjoy the benefits of the new groundbreaking junior golf equipment SNAG. Starting New At Golf is a system designed to integrate fundamental coordination and athletic movements into the fundamentals of golf. Young golfers enjoy SNAg games because it builds golfing ability while also presenting different games and challenges that traditional golf may not provide some junior golfers. These techniques progress nicely into the traditional game of golf as kids take an interest in the game as well as the activity of just hitting the ball.

• intermediate Golf: These classes build on the progression model as seen in the younger classes. Students will begin to take the fundamental athletic principles established in the beginner levels of golf and apply them to more advanced athletic move-ments, which translate to success with their swing. Intermediate golfers will continue to learn etiquette of the game as they progress in preparation for full integration onto the golf course. These classes may also spend some time with more advanced games featuring SNAg equipment.

• advanced Golf: The advanced golf class will be the culmination of the fundamentals of etiquette and the game as outlined through the younger stages of the junior golf program. This class is for experienced golfers only and will focus more on honing skills, and they will spend a majority of their time on the range, putting green practicing or on the golf course apply-ing their acquired knowledge into the game of golf.

new in the art loftIn addition to our favorites art classes up in the loft this year, we will offer two new art classes: • Wearable art: Using a variety of techniques on shirts, bags and accessories — tie dye and batik, among them — we will create a variety of art for everyday wear.• Portraiture: Focusing on facial structures and measurements, learn how to draw portraits and self-portraits in this class!

become a Junior scientistIn Junior scientist, another new class for 2014, we will use journals to record observations and discoveries as well as express ideas about nature around us. While emphasizing conservation and classification, children will also learn how scien-tists and engineers define problems and design investigations. Children will collect data for local citizen scientist investigations through Maine Audubon’s Vital Signs project. Campers may also choose green technologies to learn and/or design their own investigations.

For our youngest stars Starfish for ages 4 and 5 is a weekly morning drop-off program designed for preschool age children. The program meets daily from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. A Starfish morning includes a 30-minute swim lesson, story time, nature time and a craft project. The Starfish program is staffed at a 4-to-1 ratio to ensure appropriate supervision of children at all times.

Counselor in Training (CIT) The CIT program for ages 13 to 14 emphasizes on-the-job training, supervised instruction, and lessons in CPR and First Aid. CIT classes will be divided between 13- and 14 year-olds. Teens should register for their age-appropriate CIT class; in case of a scheduling conflict, we also offer a combined-age afternoon class. Each CIT will be assigned 12 or more flexible hours of service activities per week. CITS must register for at least two consecutive weeks — and we encourage more!

On the tennis court Choose from the following tennis options:

• Stroke Development will emphasize basic strokes, including forehand, backhand, volleys and serves, and will include an introduction to rules, scoring, etiquette, and game play.

• Advanced Tennis will help further refine various strokes for more advanced players and will include instruction in singles and doubles play and game strategy.

• Tennis Team continues to provide opportunities to compete in tournaments and USTA matches.

• Tennis has been added to both the morning and afternoon bundled programs (see charts, Page 4.)

Come sail away!Along with many boat and water-front equipment upgrades, KBIA has also expanded its waterfront classes and added new class names as well. We have listed sailing classes in this Registration Guide with age restric-tions; however, please speak with us if you have any questions about what class is right for your child. Please remember that a life jacket and closed-toe shoes are required for all waterfront classes.

Sea Fleas, for ages 4-6In row boats, with instructors, children are taught to be comfort-able on the water. Class includes a visit to nearby Strawberry Island, where they pretend to be pirates in search of buried treasure!

Gollywobblers, Ages 7 to 8This course focuses on teaching ba-sic sailing skills and principles. The curriculum includes learning basic nautical terms, parts of the boat, rigging and unrigging, finding wind direction, learning to steer with a tiller, practicing tacking and jibing, water safety, and knot tying.

Topsails, Ages 9 and upThis course is designed for young sailors who may have some previous sailing experience. The curriculum al-lows sailors to further develop their understanding of sailing fundamen-tals, including rigging, boat handling, landing and departing the dock, points of sail, reading the weather, seamanship, water safety, basics of racing and sportsmanship.

opti race Team, Ages 9+This racing-focused class utilizes Optimist Class dinghies and will travel to select MIRC Regattas on Wednesdays.

Race Team, Ages 11+This racing-focused class utilizes our Laser and 420 sailboats and will travel to select MIRC Regattas on Wednesdays.

Race Clinic, Ages 9+KBIA has invited college coaches to run four clinics. Students will have time for dry land training, lunch, and time on the water. For serious racers only!

KBIA Policies and ExpectationsMembership

We welcome everyone to join! In order to be eligible to register for KBIA classes for Weeks 2-8, you must be a KBIA member and pay the annual membership fee. One membership is required per family, which is defined as one or more generations living in the same household, with members of the younger generation being direct descendants of the older generation. Non-members are welcome to sign up for classes for Week 1 without paying a membership fee. For information, please review the enclosed Membership Form.

Class Registration & Participation

Classes fill quickly! KBIA processes memberships and class registrations as they’re received. All required forms must be complete to be processed. Returning all your required forms promptly will help you secure the classes and schedule you selected. Please return required forms by USPS first-class mail; do not leave required forms in the KBIA mailbox. Office registration, priority/overnight delivery and mail requiring a signature receipt are only accepted on-site during office hours beginning June 16, 2014.

Class & Safety Requirements

In order to attend classes, each child must be the specified age for their age group by June 15, 2014. Unless a child is enrolled in Adventures or the Bundled Class schedule, KBIA does not provide supervision of children outside of scheduled class time. KBIA has an open-campus policy. KBIA faculty and staff are not responsible for the supervision or accountability of children when they are not attending KBIA classes. KBIA assumes responsibilities for children once they arrive at class and for the duration of the class. At drop-off, parents or guardians can indicate to the class instructor the individual who is responsible for picking up the child or if the child is allowed to leave independently. Children arriving to class independently will be allowed to leave class independently.

non-discrimination Policy

KBIA is committed to supporting the goal of equal opportunity and does not discriminate based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, age, ancestry or national origin, status as a veteran, status as a whistleblower, or any other status protected by law in the hiring of counselors and staff or in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarships, and other camp-administered programs.

Parent visits

KBIA has a beautiful campus, and we encourage you to enjoy the unique surroundings. Tables, chairs, and umbrellas are for your use. However, if you would like to visit your child’s “classroom,” please contact the instructor or Executive Director to set up a convenient day and time. Sometimes parents drop in unannounced to chat with a teacher. While such practice may seem harmless and even friendly, it is often disruptive to the classroom routine. Under no circumstance should a teacher leave a class to have more than a cursory exchange, and under no circumstance should a parent initiate any kind of lengthy, intense, or negative interaction with a teacher, counselor, or counselor-in-training (“CIT”) who is working with a class. Other than to drop off or pick up a child, please refrain from entering the docks, swimming pool, Adventures Tent, Smith House or classrooms in the Strong Cottage when camp is in session. Private boats are not allowed at any time.

Conduct and values

We expect campers to show respect for and consideration of the feelings and welfare of others. Rules and discipline start with the premise, and with the firm belief, that self-esteem is the foundation that nurtures both respect for others and personal honesty. Trust is the cornerstone of our community. KBIA expects every member of its community, child and adult, to demonstrate concern for others. Therefore, we share and practice the following standards:

• We respect the dignity and individual needs of other human beings. No one, neither adult nor child, has the right to mistreat another person. This includes name calling, ethnic, racial or gender-based slurs, bullying and inappropriate teasing;

• When we make decisions about personal and camp matters, we accept the consequences for those decisions;

• We respect KBIA’s property and the property of others; and

• We strive to serve and contribute to the welfare of the camp, the Cove, Mother’s Beach and the Kennebunk Beach community.

behavior and discipline

KBIA is located next to the ocean, and many of our classes are on the water. Safety is of the utmost concern and we expect members of the KBIA community (campers, counselors, staff, and parents) to abide by the following principles: care for self, care for others and care for one’s environment. We demonstrate these principles through the qualities of honesty, self-control, and responsibility.

A child who exhibits inappropriate behavior will discuss the matter with the instructor, and other students if required, and together make a decision about the appropriate consequence. Instructors help students to understand the boundaries of appropriate behavior and we ask parents to support these efforts by reinforcing them at home.

In the case of a serious infraction, or repeated offense, the Executive Director will become involved and contact the parents to set up a meeting. Suspension or even dismissal from the program may be necessary when other solutions are exhausted, or when a child’s behavior creates a dangerous environment or causes an undue disruption to KBIA operations. Such decisions are at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Employment of Counselors

KBIA offers employment to young men and women starting at age 15. Typically, these teenagers have been campers at KBIA and have participated in the CIT program during the previous two summers. The CIT curriculum covers topics such as the basics of employment (being accountable, responsible and diligent), customer service, and safety. Any counselor, whether they have matriculated in the CIT program or are direct new hires, are expected to demonstrate these skills.

If an issue should arise regarding the performance of an employee under the age of 18, the Executive Director will attempt to resolve the issue directly with the employee. The KBIA views these incidents as opportunities to learn and develop. Yet should the problem persist, or is a major problem, the Executive Director will reach out to the parents of employees under the age of 18 to enlist their assistance with the matter. If an employee is over the age of 18, parents will not be contacted.

Educational Accommodations Statement

KBIA is not a special-needs camp and is not equipped to provide individualized educational programs for students with severe physical, cognitive, or mental disabilities. KBIA will make reasonable accommodations for known disabilities to assist the camper in meeting the behavioral performance standards of the program.

Some classes have specific physical, dress and equipment requirements. Please read the online class descriptions carefully. If you need assistance meeting class requirements, please contact the KBIA office.

KBIA has begun its fifth and final year of the 100th Capital Campaign. Many of the successes of this effort are easy to see: the new pool, playground, boats, tent and the structural and aesthetic improvements to Strong Cottage, to name a few. In addition to these highly visible and public improvements, the Board of Directors has been investing in KBIA’s endowment, which has allowed us to grow the KBIA Scholarship program accordingly.

By growing the endowment, KBIA has increased the scholarship dollars it distributes from $13,000 in 2008 to $21,000 in 2013 – without dipping into principal. And the Board of Directors has budgeted more than $32,000 in scholarships for 2014. We recently moved the endowment to a professional firm, managed under the direction of the Board of Directors’ Endowment Committee. We would like to see this number continue to grow over the next few years so that the KBIA scholarship program is safe from economic swings and can continue to add value and meaning to the lives of more children and to the KBIA community as a whole.

As a fitting finale to our 100th Capital Campaign, we have launched a matching program for our scholarship fund. That means for every two new dollars given to KBIA will be matched by one dollar. Stay tuned for more details!

The majority of KBIA scholarships is distributed through the local school system of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel. School principals select the children who they feel will benefit most from a summer at KBIA. KBIA takes care of the all of the details to make sure that these children, like all of our children, have a fun-filled summer by the sea. This effort is integral to the mission, spirit and community at KBIA, and it will be the focus of the final stretch of the 100th Capital Campaign so that KBIA can thrive for the next hundred years and beyond.

We will be asking all members, supporters and friends of KBIA to dig deep and support the 100th Capital Campaign in its final year so we can ensure that our beloved jewel on the Cove is safe for all to enjoy for many warm and sunny summers to come.
