FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

Rex Northen | Executive Director, Cleantech Open

Welcome to the ninth Academy Awards of Cleantech, the ninth chance we’ve had to celebrate with you the extraordinary entrepreneurs who are helping us address the planet’s most pressing energy, environmental and economic challenges.

2014 has been a year of great contrasts: The boom in hydraulic fracturing and policy uncertainties in Europe and the U.S. slowed growth in renewables, although there was continued solid growth of 5.6% for nonhydropower renewables overall. Oil prices have just fallen to a four-year low, fueling (all-too-literally) demand for gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs, while electric and hybrid car sales also continue to rise. Coal use continues to rise globally.

But the good news is far bigger, even if it doesn’t feel that way. Early traction is the hardest to generate, and we have plenty of it: EV’s now account for 1% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. The cost of solar and wind and battery storage continue to fall, and relentless technological progress means that we’re driving closer to compelling competitive cleantech advantages in energy, materials, water, transportation, building, agriculture - the focus of Cleantech Open accelerator programs for startups. There’s no looking back once the new disrupts the old, and cleantech solutions will, sooner or later, disrupt most of what we know.

For the Cleantech Open, like the rest of cleantech, the greatest growth came from the developing world: 150 United States startups were joined by entrepreneurs from six new accelerators launched in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (the GEF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), forming the Global Cleantech Innovation Program (GCIP). GCIP received 555 qualified applications and selected 159 startups who engaged enthusiastically in the Cleantech Open’s programs. We look forward to seeing spectacular results from their efforts, as with their U.S. counterparts.

Global Ideas, the Cleantech Open’s global quest for promising early-stage concepts, entered its fifth year. AutoAgronom, winner of this year’s Global Ideas in Israel, has since agreed to be acquired for $20M by Chinese company Shenyang Yuanda, underscoring yet another trend - the global nature of this market, and providing a good segue into what you should expect from the Global Forum.

This is a truly global event. We’re here to find ways to support entrepreneurs from all corners of the planet connect with customers, build their channels, find investors. Why? Because no technology can help crack our problems if it doesn’t succeed commercially.

Help us to accelerate cleantech startups. Cheer them on, cast your People’s Choice vote, and, if you can, support our work by making a donation to the Cleantech Open at our registration tables, at www.cleantechopen.org - or by signing up for the gala dinner on Thursday evening.

Thank you, and welcome.

Rex
