Bison Good SportsIn 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign,

a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank

fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than support-ing an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators fi nd creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes

American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had more than 93 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competi-tive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2013-14 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball APR.

• 81 Patriot League teams recorded perfect graduation success rates and 92 earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR.

• More than 93 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR.

• Patriot League teams won NCAA Tournament games in seven differ-ent sports, with American winning twice to advance to the Round of 16 in volleyball.

• League squads also won NCAA fi rst-round or regional contests in football (Fordham), men’s soccer (Navy), women’s soccer (Boston Univer-sity), women’s lacrosse (Loyola), softball (Boston University) and baseball (Bucknell).

• Navy won the overall Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the second time in three years, while Army took fi rst place on the men’s side and Boston University claimed the women’s title in its inaugural season.

• Fifteen student-athletes earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including fi rst-team accolades for Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football), Bucknell’s Joe Meyer (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Eliza-beth Hoerner (Women’s Soccer).

• Thirty-fi ve student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

• There were 2,450 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14, including 128 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

• American women’s basketball standout Alexis Dobbs and Navy women’s soccer star Elizabeth Hoerner both earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and were later named the Patriot League’s nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

• Fordham’s Brett Biestek earned a Postgraduate Scholarship from the FCS Athletic Directors Association.

• The Patriot League Sportsmanship Awards went to a pair of basketball student-athletes in American’s Darius Gardner on the men’s side and Army’s Krishawn Tillett for the women.

• Lafayette’s Alec Golini (Men’s Soccer) and Lehigh’s Brooke Astor (Women’s Track and Field) earned the Patriot League Outstanding Leader-ship and Character Awards for their excellence in leadership and service.

• Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award fi nalists, including three in men’s lacrosse.

• Loyola’s Joe Fletcher was one of fi ve fi nalists for the Tewaaraton Award given to the top player in men’s lacrosse, and also earned the William C. Schmeisser Outstanding Defensive Player Award from the USILA.

Bucknell Department of Athletics andRecreation Mission Statement

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their fi rst priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Depart-ment promotes the per-sonal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encour-aging personal health, development, and bal-ance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competi-tion; and by preparing participants for service

and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of ath-letic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, refl ects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and com-plies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The Presidents’ Cup signifi es overall excellence in the 24 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 18 times in its 24-year existence, including 14 of the last 17 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded an-nually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s fi nish in each of the 24 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament fi nish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the

playing fi elds. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-

tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly

at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s

student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all

Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates

three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-

letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference

in 1990-91.

• A total of 402 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-

or Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their

sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 498 made

the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

• In addition to the 125 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced

since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 341 Academic All-District honor-

ees over the same span, including three in 2013-14.

• Bucknell has earned 98 Patriot League championships in 24 years in

the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 125 conference players of the

year, 104 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 581 individual league

champions from sports such as cross country, track & fi eld, swimming

& diving, tennis and golf.

• 25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in

the spring of 2014.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying

the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 24-year history of the

affi liation, including 14 of the last 17 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn

State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-

ica selections with 125.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-

lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which

opened fully in 2003. One of the fi nest collegiate athletics facilities of

its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-

pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the

Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s

Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-

icine suite, modern offi ces for coaches and staff , and locker room and

classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is fi rst and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their fi rst priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be eff ective leaders on and off the playing fi elds. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which aff ords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff , including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfi tted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and eff orts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

be a bisonThe term “student-athlete” signifi es some-

thing extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar fi rst and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a chal-lenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Jeremy Cook, a former member of the United States men’s national fi eld hockey team, was named head fi eld hockey coach at Bucknell in July 2008.

Among his extensive international fi eld hockey experience, Cook has served as a technical assistant with the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. He assisted the men’s team at the Olym-pic qualifying tournament, and the 2008 Olympics-bound women’s squad at the Pan-American Games, the Champions Challenge, the Chile 4-Nation Tournament and the team’s Holland tour. He has also served as an assistant coach and administrative director at the Elite Performance Training Center in either the Pennsylva-nia/New Jersey or the Midwest Region each summer since 2005, and he has more than six years of experience coaching the U.S. Futures program in the Washington, D.C., area and at develop-mental camps across the country. During the summer of 2010, Cook served as the head coach of the Pennsylvania Junior Team at the USA Field Hockey High Performance Championships and led the squad to the title.

Hired as an assistant coach at Indiana University in February 2007, Cook has also had assistant coaching stints at Penn (2005-06), Drexel (2000-01), American (1999) and Cornell (1997-98).

Cook, who graduated summa cum laude from Drexel in 2002, enjoyed a stellar playing career. From 1997-2000 he was a mem-ber of Team USA. He com-peted in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and was a member of three gold med-al-winning teams at the U.S. Olympic Festival. He also played on three Indoor Pan American Cup teams and on the 2003 Indoor World Cup team that competed in Leipzig, Germany. From 1995-97, Cook played on the fi rst team with Hockey Club Rotterdam in The Nether-lands.

Cook lives in Lewisburg with his wife, Sandra and son, Ryan, born in 2012.

COACHING STAFFCOACHING STAFF

Former University of New Hampshire standout Hannah Rich-ard joined the Bison coaching staff in the summer of 2014. The two-time Second Team All-America East selection graduated from New Hampshire earlier that year with a degree in kinesiology: sports studies and a minor in business administration.

A Hopkinton, New Hampshire, native, Richard played in more than 80 games in her four-year career with the nationally ranked Wildcats. She totaled 29 goals and fi ve assists while garnering nearly 50 starting assignments. Richard netted one goal in a 3-0 New Hampshire victory over Bucknell in October 2013.

In addition to her high level of play, Richard has extensive camp coaching experience, having worked at a host of camps all over the northeast over the last fi ve years. She has also served as a Futures Coach since January 2013, and began working with the Seacoast United Field Hockey Club in Hampton, New Hampshire, following the end of her own collegiate playing career.

Meghan Dawson joined the Bison program during the summer of 2013. A two-time national champion at North Carolina, Daw-son brings a history of success as both a player and coach to the Bucknell sideline.

Dawson graduated from North Carolina in 2011 with a degree in communications. During her time with the Tar Heels, the defender and Berlin, New Jersey, native helped the team to NCAA National Championship titles in 2007 and 2009 as well as additional Final Four appearances in 2010 and 2011. As a junior she received All-NCAA Tournament honors as the team fi nished runner-up nation-ally, adding to a resume that also included two selections to the All-South Region team.

After leaving North Carolina, Dawson played with the United States Field Hockey Developmental Squad and added to her coaching resume. While in Chapel Hill, she served as coach of the Carolina All-Star Field Hockey Club U16 team in 2012. She later returned to her high school alma mater, volunteering with Eastern Regional and helping the team to a Group IV State Championship. It was her fi fth state title with the team as she also won four NJ-SIAA State Championships as a player before having her Eastern Regional jersey retired. In the last year, Dawson has split her time coaching the Spirit of USA Field Hockey Club in Berlin, N.J., and working with Harrow Sports as a sales consultant in Denver.

Dawson is not the only member of her family to have success on the fi eld hockey turf. One of eight siblings, Meghan’s sister, Rachel, was the 2007 National Player of the Year at North Caro-lina, and sisters Natalie and Sarah played at Iowa. All three have been members of the U.S. National Team during their careers. Her younger sister Melanie also played at North Carolina.

The Bison were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for posting a team grade-point average of better than 3.0 and 13 team members earned positions on the NFHCA National Academic Squad. Addi-tionally, a number of Bison were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for GPAs above 3.20 during the 2013 fall semester and three were Academic All-Patriot League hon-orees. As Bison Athletics seeks to create a compre-hensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an im-portant element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, de-velop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its fi rst three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15.

Approximately 60 student-athletes particpate in Leadership Academy programming each year.

Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include:• Identify and develop high potential leaders as

sophomores or juniors• Help young best athletes become best leaders• Create strong leaders by example and set

stage to develop vocal leaders• Build a strong peer support network for aspir-

ing leaders• Develop leaders who support and learn from

team captains/leaders• Practice leading self, their class, and below• Succession Planning — smoothly replace

graduating leaders• Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be

vocal leaders• Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing

partnership with the coaching staff• Teach and apply the insights and skills neces-

sary to be a responsible and respected leader• Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching

and support as they tackle the tough issues of

The Plan for BucknellBucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and profes-

sional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

The Plan comprises fi ve strategies.Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell edu-

cation is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting schol-ars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our fi nancial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell.
