Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world.

The island is about the size of the state of Texas.

The eastern coast is covered with rain forests.

The western region is hilly and dry.

Iron in the soil makes it look red, giving Madagascar the name “Great Red Island.”

PEOPLE GROUPS: Malagasy (18 different tribes). There are also small groups of East Indians and Chinese.

CAPITAL CITY: Antananarivo (1.8 million)

RELIGIONS: Indigenous beliefs (52%), Christianity (41%, includes both Roman Catholic and Protestant), Muslim (7%).
