AIA Dayton Members,

On a personal level, this year flew by and I’m happy to say it ended much better than it started. As always I was just part of a larger team that pulled off another successful year. New to the board this year were Dianna Conboy (Secretary), Ed McCall (Director), and Courtney Moran (Associate Director). They have done a great job. Like the President of any organization, I had to learn to delegate and trust that my board and members would do the right thing and they never let me down. My team is a great board but also a group of regulars that attend the varied events we had this year. I really enjoy spending time with fellow architects. While we may compete for projects sometimes, that doesn’t mean we can’t be friendly and share a beverage and talk about life. Regrettably, I sometimes see architects working together out of necessity rather than for the benefit of the profession or the projects.

As the AIA board, we aspire to raise the profession through our exposure to the public through various events. At Grassroots we work as an organization for better representation. Through Architecture Week, we teach the public – kids and adults – more about what we do. The Student Design and Scholarship programs provide even more exposure. Even the Focus on Design program winners show up in the papers letting the world know what we do and what good design looks like.

It has been my pleasure to serve the profession of architecture and as I plan to continue and leave you with this question. …

What have you done recently to improve the profession?

Sincerely Submitted

Patrick A. Hillier

AIA Dayton President 2014

Thanks to the Dayton Daily News and Meredith Moss, AIA Dayton, its members, and some awesome buildings have gotten some well-deserved publicity the last two years. The project is Your Favorite Building, and the criteria: the article must be at least 250 words; the building must be in the DDN circulation area; and it can’t be your own firm’s building. Authors thus far have been Matthew Sauer, Patrick Hillier, Ed Young, Steve Sharp, Erin McNicholl, and Dan Wyckoff.

AIA National held its annual Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference from March 19 – 21 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Those in attendance from AIA Dayton were President Patrick Hillier, AIA; President-elect Dave Bills, AIA; AIA Ohio Associate Director Representative Rick White, AIA; and Jane Treiber, Executive Director.

During the conference, the Dayton contingency met with Kevin Eichinger, Senior Legislative Assistant to Congressman Jim Jordan, and with Andrew Sigmon, Senior Policy Advisor to Congressman Michael Turner. In addition, Dave Bills met with Nicholas Butterfield of Senator Rob Portman’s office and Jennifer Waits, aide to Senator Sherrod Brown. This year’s Grassroots program coincided with a scheduled break for Congress.

The key issues discussed during all the meetings were to ask Congress to extend and make modest improvements to the Energy-Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction (179D); to support HR 2750, a bill to make the overall federal construction process fairer and more efficient; and to support HR 4205, the National Design Services Act, which would extend to architecture graduates student debt relief in exchange for work in underserved communities. In addition to the visits to Capitol Hill, there were a day and one-half of leadership educational sessions, and an open house at the AIA Headquarters and the Octagon House on New York Avenue, which served as a temporary Executive Mansion to President James Madison after the burning of the White House by the British.

Golf OutingGolfers hit the Pella Sale’s sponsored driving range before feasting on a BBQ picnic lunch. KONE and AIA Dayton provided registration giveaways at registration under the porch of the 1840 House, Sugar Valley Country Club’s temporary headquarters. The four person “Best Ball” Scramble began at 1:00 PM as the foursomes drove to their perspective starting holes on their Brower Insurance-sponsored golf carts. Once again the on-course watering holes were sponsored by Chapel Electric and Becker Construction. Golfers enjoyed a frozen Snicker’s bar by Elements IV at Hole 1.

During dinner, golfers collected door prizes and enjoyed a steak dinner sponsored by Hemm’s Glass. Pella Sales and Thyssen Krupp gave away door prizes at the conclusion of dinner. Bill Williams introduced one of this year’s AIA Dayton Scholarship recipients, Jared Schroeder, who was accompanied by his father for the entire golf outing. As a result of the numerous mulligans purchased during the outing, a $1,290.00 check will be presented to the AIA Dayton Scholarship Fund.

This year’s Longest Putt skill prize went to Ian Simpson, while Betsy Hughes claimed the Longest Woman’s Drive. Matt Franklin drove the Longest Men’s Drive and Paul Fiden earned Closest to the Pin honors. Second place foursome of Mark Ruetschle, Greg Schuerman, Josh Naragon and Bruce Smith brought a score 47. Coming 2 shots short of last year’s winning score, the winner of this year’s 2014 AIA Dayton Golf Outing, with a score of 46, was the combined team of Matt Franklin, Bill Williams, Mark Wiseman and Steve Byington. Thank you, golfers, sponsors, committee members and Sugar Valley Country Club for making this year’s event a great one. We look forward to enjoying the AIA Dayton Golf Scramble in the club’s newly built clubhouse in 2015.

Student Design Competition The 2014 Student Design Competition was a success! We had over 59 students participate from 13 schools. The events were held at Business Furniture, App Architecture, The Architectural Group, with the awards reception at Heapy Engineering.

This year marks the 34th Annual Student Design Competition. The program is a downtown Urban Market. The inspiration for this project is the need for grocery options for downtown Dayton residents, as well as for those that work and play here. The project featured the adaptive reuse of the existing Gentile Building. Students were asked to explore renovation and addition options, as well as incorporate a secondary service of their choice.

Our planning meetings for this year began at the end of May and continued monthly. There were a steady number members that attend the monthly meetings; approximately 8-10 people. The meetings were regularly held on the second Wednesday of every month.

This year, Charlie Setterfield joined the committee and his Revit class at Sinclair Community College (SCC) produced a Revit model of the existing building. The student with the most complete model received a copy of the student edition of Architectural Graphic Standards.

We’ve had a successful season with scholarships. Heapy contributed a $1000 scholarship. Sinclair Community College contributed a scholarship of $1485.45 = which would pay for 15 credit hours. This scholarship is called, “Sinclair Community College Pathways Scholarship”. Overall it was a very rewarding and enlightening event!

Applications were received by the Dayton Foundation for 2014 for the AIA Dayton Architecture Scholarship. Seven applications were received this year which was higher than last year and we will continue to have discussions with the Dayton Foundation on better ways to receive more student applications in 2015 from both High School and Colleges.

The 2014 AIA Dayton Architecture Scholarship recipients were:

Megan Gill was awarded a $1,500 scholarship to continue her studies at the Sam Fox Graduate School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. Megan is a 2010 graduate of Vandalia Butler High School.

Jared Schroeder was awarded a $1,500 scholarship to begin his architecture studies at the University of Cincinnati. He is a 2014 graduate of Dominion Academy. Jared and his father attended and played at the AIA Dayton Golf Outing and Dinner in August and had an opportunity to be recognized for his achievement and to meet the golf participants and AIA members in attendance.

The 2014 scholarship selection committee included: Shari Rethman, Sinclair Community College, Tom Belanich, Messer Construction, Bill Williams, AIA, and Matt Sauer, AIA Dayton Past President.

Donations received from AIA Dayton, AIA National, the Golf Outing, and AIA Dayton members & firms have provided the funding to the Scholarship Fund to award 29 scholarships totaling $34,000 over the past 13 years in support of architecture education for students from 19 high schools located in AIA Dayton’s nine county region and our Colleges of Architecture in Ohio.

This was the first year where the minimum scholarship amount was raised from $1,000 to $1,500. AIA Dayton received a $1,000 matching funds grant from AIA National again this year. Due to the continuing support of AIA Dayton Chapter and its Board, and the AIA National Matching Grant Fund, AIA Dayton members, as well as investment returns, the AIA Dayton Architectural Scholarship Fund had a great year in 2014!

Lego Event at Chaminade Julienne

In October, Alex Bohler and Patrick Hillier represented AIA Dayton at Chaminade Julienne’s annual STEM day program to give students an opportunity to learn more about career options. Our table had a city plan that encouraged kids to add to existing buildings or create their own. Bridges, skyscrapers and spaceships were all built. We also had a foam core model as well as sketchup models to show them other tools we worked with. The event was well attended and the kids flocked to our table.

The AIA Ohio Convention took place at Kent State University. This years theme, “A Future Practice” focuses on careers, business and practice opportunities for those who are just entering the architectural profession as well as long time practicioners looking for ways to change their existing practices. Centered out of the Kent State Hotel and Conference Center (215 S. Depeyster Street, Kent), the convention focused on the connection of practice to the academy as the profession is redesigned. There were over 40 learning units from 28 different educational sessions, three keynotes, and nightly social events.

We have had over a dozen study sessions so far this calendar year. About three to five people attend each session, shifting as people finish tests while others begin. The ARE Resource Library has had five to seven steady users and has been a great resource to provide interns free study guides and flashcards. The ARE will be changing again in 2016, and we will need to update this library accordingly. Please let us know if you are interested in donating new materials in the future!

Our annual Emerging Professionals picnic was on September 6 at Taylorsville MetroPark. Despite the drizzle, we had a good time. 22 people showed up, including two Sinclair students studying architecture.

AIA Dayton’s emerging professionals have also organized and participated in a variety of events in an effort to entice young people to pursue architecture in their futures. We have

organized a few guest speaker opportunities at nearby schools, particularly during Architecture Week. If you would like to volunteer to be one of these guest speakers in 2015, please let an Associate Director know.

The Emerging Professionals have planned monthly happy hours throughout the year, called the Pour Architects Review. These are open to all members, affiliates, and families of AIA Dayton. We try to keep them varied, and attendance has ranged from 8 to 22 people each month. This past year included a joint happy hour with ASHRAE at the Yellow Springs Brewery, a mosaic mural working session at K12 Gallery, and games played at numerous downtown venues. One Pour Architect’s review was held at Blind Bob’s, and games were played at numerous other downtown venues.

AIA National Convention - Chicago!

21

I was not the only AIA Dayton member in Chicago the foggy May weekend that this year’s national convention was held. Among others I saw were Charlie, Brad, Terry, and Joanne from Dayton. Regional architects/friends that I’ve met from other conventions locally and nationally. I also had a chance to see some old friends I’ve not seen in years. I attended primarily to represent the chapter and cast our votes in the national AIA elections, but I also used it as a launching off to a family vacation and brought my wife and son along. They kept busy during my meetings but gave me someone to go to lunch or dinner with and I had a date for the evening cocktail parties. It is nice that Mellisa Munger from Toledo (Mrs. Hal Munger, AIA Toledo) remembers my wife from our trip to Denver last year and they could talk about their shared interests.

Like most conventions it started with a welcome from the Mayor Rahm Emanuel and motivational / inspirational speakers such as Theaster Gates on art and Jeanne Gang on the status of architecture. Other days we heard from

Ed Mazria who showed us our impact on the world by how much work there is done yearly. The women in architecture panel rounded out the discussion on resiliency. Having been watching “Cool Spaces” on PBS – I thought it was fun to have Stephen Chung there.

The AIA national convention is a buzz of activity with often too much to do – cool ties in the gift shop, classes to get in those missing learning units, gigantic exhibition hall, social events, mixers, regional events, key note speakers, tours, elections and business meetings. You’ll leave exhausted and energized at the same time.

Atlanta is just around the corner – sign up and go!

Procrastinators DayProcrastinator’s Day for AIA Dayton was held on Wednesday at Elements IV Interiors. Thirty-two architects and other design professionals earned 6 hours of AIA CES credits, while 8 members of the Vendor Blender, a group of professionals representing a variety of quality interior finish products and furnishings, provided lunch for all and an opportunity to see what’s new in the industry.

Thanks to host Elements IV; the Vendor Blender group of 3form, The Art Company, Bruce Longhino Group, Daltile, Fashion Architectural Designs, J&J|Invision, Kirker Kubala, and the Momentum Group; and special speakers Matt Sciarretti and Daniel Lampke (Heapy Engineering), Terry Welker, AIA (City of Kettering), and Eric Teske and Eric Pempus, AIA (Oswald Companies).
