Letter from the President

Dear Colleagues and Supporters,

On behalf of the Board, hundreds of generous donors and numerous dedicated volunteers, it is my pleasure share the outstanding progress made in 2014 by the Minnesota Dental Foundation toward its vision of eliminating unmet oral health needs in Minnesota. I truly thank each and every donor of in-kind or cash donations and every volunteer since we cannot begin to reach our vision without your support.

I hope you will find this report both informative and motivating. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate that donations made to the Foundation are used wisely, efficiently and effectively to help those who have difficulty accessing dental care in Minnesota. Equally important, I want to encourage you to join our large and growing volunteer network for programs such as Donated Dental Services (DDS) and Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM). And if you are recently retired, there is a program to help you maintain your license in return for service to the underserved – a great way to give back to your profession.

With the exception of Donated Dental Services whose fiscal year does not correspond to the calendar year, the information presented in this report is from calendar year 2014.

Whether through the dues check-off, annual fund drive, a donation in memory/honor of someone or the funding of major projects like Mission of Mercy, your financial contributions are critical to the future of the Foundation. I want to extend special gratitude to colleagues who have included the Foundation in their estate plans in as part of the Legacy Circle. You are true visionaries.

Each contribution, annual donation and estate plan gift strengthens the Foundation’s monies and its ability to support deserving programs throughout the state. Every gift counts and every gift is needed to help us sustain our profession’s leadership in giving. I am confident that 2015 will be even more productive and we will have even more success.

Vision StatementThe vision of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to eliminate unmet oral health needs in Minnesota

Mission StatementThe mission of the Minnesota Dental Foundation is to:

• Initiate and support outreach programs that provide dental services to underserved populations and communities

• Encourage and support volunteerism within the profession• Promote careers in dentistry, especially in underserved areas

Leadership in ActionThrough 2005, the Foundation’s main focus was to fund community and volunteer clinics in the Give Kids a Smile program. Starting in 2006, grant applications were accepted from the greater community interested in dental care for the underserved in Minnesota. Starting in 2011 a number of internal program were initiated such as Donated Dental Services, Minnesota Mission of Mercy, the Martha Mordinii Rukavina Loan Forgiveness Program, the Retired Dentist Program and in the fall of 2014, the collaboration with Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation with the Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists Loan Repayment for Service Program.

Since its inception through December 31, 2014, the Foundation has funded 365 different projects with in-kind or cash services totaling $1,210,085.

2014 Grant RecipientsThe organizations listed here received monies and/or in-kind services from the Minnesota Dental Foundation during 2014.

Donated Dental Services (DDS)Donated Dental Services, a program of Dental Lifeline Network, has been in existence in Minnesota since 2003 and became a program of the Foundation in 2012. The program provides dentistry to disabled, elderly or medically fragile individuals in the private offices of participating dentists. All specialty dentistry and laboratory work also are provided at no cost. Since its inception in Minnesota, 1,556 patients have received dental services valued at $7,406,327.In the program’s 2013-2014 fiscal year, 219 patients received dental services valued at $907,842. State funding for the administration of the program ended in 2011. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation has generously funded the program for the 2013-2014 fiscal year along with support from Dental Lifeline Network.

Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM)Minnesota’s third Mission of Mercy (MnMOM) was held at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato in July 2014. The two-day clinic was staffed by 1,028 dental professionals and other volunteers and provided free dental care to children and adults who have difficulty accessing care. The 1,490 patient encounters resulted in $875,708 in donated dental services, including fillings, extractions, root canals, anterior partials, pediatric dentistry, hygiene and oral health education. Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation again was the Signature Sponsor of this event.

Martha Mordini Rukavina Loan Forgiveness ProgramThe Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board provided funds for up to two dentists to help repay qualified dental education loans. Dentists must be new to the practice of dentistry in the Taconite Assistance Area (TAA) of northeastern Minnesota. Two dentists received their initial funding in 2013, one in Hibbing and one in Virginia and that continued through 2014.

Retired Dentist ProgramThis pilot program, funded by the Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, began in 2013. It is a way for dentists who are no longer receiving an income from dentistry to “give back” to the profession and their community by providing dental care for persons who have difficulty accessing dental care. In return for reimbursement of fees for licenses, professional liability insurance and continuing education expenses, the dentist must provide at least 100 hours per year or approximately one day per month of free care to the underserved. Three dentists participated in this program in 2014.

Dedicated to Minnesota Dentists (DMD) Loan Repayment for Service ProgramThis program, in collaboration with Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation, was announced in September 2014 as another educational loan repayment program to attract new dentists to dental Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSA) in Minnesota. Total funding of this program was $2,000,000 and each successful recipient can receive up to $200,000 to repay qualified educational loans.
