Your Rehearsal DinnerThe perfect place kick-start your wedding weekend

For most couples, the rehearsal dinner kicks off their wedding weekend. Generally, the rehearsal dinner is a time for the wedding party and two families to relax, get to know each other, and celebrate the joining of two families, and it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time with your family and closest friends who have come to celebrate in your honor. Depending on the size of your family and wedding party, rehearsal dinners can easily grow upwards of 30 people. Those typically invited to the rehearsal are the bridal partyandtheirspouses, theofficiantandtheirspouse.the parents, stepparents, and grandparents of the bride and groom; any siblings of the bride and groom not who are not in the wedding party along with their spouses; andtheparentsofanyflowergirlsorringbearers.Ifany of your bridal party are single and bringing a guest to the wedding, then it’s also kind to invite that guest to the rehearsal dinner.

Finding the perfect location for your rehearsal dinner is important, as this sets the tone for your weekend. Do you want a casual outdoor BBQ, or an intimate dinner in a private banquet room? Do you want to rent out a restaurant, or have it catered? Our quaint towns in Nevada County make a wonderful backdrop for your destination wedding, yet being away from the big city means a limited number of restaurants to host large rehearsal dinners in a private manner.

For couples who have their venue for the entire weekend, it’s often a great idea to ask the caterer about hosting the rehearsal dinner at the venue, be sure to check with the venue as often there is an additional charge for this. For those seeking a restaurant, these are the best locations for a rehearsal dinner in Nevada County. Be sure to call ahead and reserve space as some prime weekends book up quickly.

CATERING

When meeting with your caterer, there’s more to decide than simply selecting your menu. You’ll want to have an idea of the type of dining experience you’d like to create for your guests. Various dining styles will create a drastically different feel during your reception, and can also have an effect on how you arrange your table decor. Here are the three most common styles of reception dining and what to consider for each style.

FAMILY STYLE Family style dining has become increasingly popular in the last few years. Similar to a sit-down dinner, guests remain seated and servers bring large beautiful platters of each entree to the table. Guests are able to sit and mingle while serving themselves without having to wait in a buffet line. This encourages mingling at the dinner table, and maintains a beautiful, formal presentation.

PROS: Moretimeeating,talking,andenjoyingthecelebration•Eachcoursehasabeautiful presentation•Guestsdonothavetogetup•Goodforreceptionswheredining spaceislimited•Comfortable,relaxed,yetrefinedandclassy•Guestsareservedat the same time.CONS:Fullcenterpiecescangetintheway•Needlargetablestoaccommodateplatters,or lessguestspertable•Needextraplates,silverwareandservingpieces.

PLATED Considered the most traditional and formal option, guests remain seated and are served an individual plated meal.

PROS: Beautifulpresentationoneachplate•Guestsdonothavetogetuporwaitinline •Feelsmorerefined•Easierfortightspaces.

CONS: Guests have to decide on entrée choice in advance, or the caterer has to estimate •Requiresmorestaffanddisheswhichincreasescost.

BUFFET Buffet is usually the most casual and economic way to serve large groups. Food stations are set up, and guests walk through the food line, selecting the food they want.

PROS: Guestscanchoosewhattheylike•Moreeconomical•Requiresminimalstaff •Double-sidedbuffetsareefficientforservinglargegroups.

CONS:Notasrefined•Guestshavetowaitinlineandjuggletheirplate•Noconsumption control•Requireslargerquantitiesoffoodasgueststendtoeatmore.

Delectable DessertsServe up something special on your big day!

The age-old tradition of cutting the wedding cake remains a sentimental time during most modern wedding receptions. The meaning around this tradition has evolved over time, and today, typically symbolizes the couples commitment to supporting and nurturing each other.

But suppose you’re not a cake person? Or perhaps you love dessert so much that choosing just one type of cake to serve during your reception seems boring. Whatever the reason, many couples are looking beyond the traditional wedding cake to bring something both personal and delicious to their guests.

Dessert is a great place to get creative. From gourmet cupcakes, pies, and ice creams, to dessert bars, gourmet cookies, and mini cake assortments, the possibilities are really endless.

Brenda from An Honest Pie, serves up fresh mini pies from her eclectic pie truck. Watch the eyes of your wedding guests light up when they see the truck and get to step up to order their own fresh pie. The truck adds a huge element of fun and style.

Another common option is a mini-dessert arrangement featuring an assortment of the couples favorite sweets and deserts.Thisallowsatonofcreativityandpersonalflair.Many couples will include a mix of both childhood favorites (like grandma’s secret recipe brownies) along side modern gourmet dessert poppers.

Choosing a creative dessert doesn’t mean you have to give up the tradition of cutting the cake and then freezing the top tier for your one year anniversary, which is said to bring good luck. Yes! You can have your wedding cake and eat it too. Most couples will still have a smaller 2-tiered traditional wedding cake for the cutting ceremony surrounded by their other chosen desserts. This is not only a feast to the eye, but ensuresallyourguestswillfindsomethingdelectableandtotheir liking when it comes to cutting the cake.

WEDDING BEAUTY

Bridal Beauty Timeline....

For brides who want to both feel and look their best on wedding day, investing in professional hair and make-up is priceless. Even the most natural bride who rarely wears make-up will love the difference these services make. This a way to be pampered and indulged before walking down the isle, and also the easiest way to ensure you look your best on wedding day; both in person and in your photographs.

Professional hair and make-up can be as natural or extravagant as you want it to be. It’s essential to do a trial run with your hairstylist and make-up artist before the wedding so that you and your stylist are on the exact same page. “This will give you complete peace of mind, and there will not be an ounce of stress about your hair and make-up on the wedding day,” says International hairstylist Kori Walker of Kolor by Kori.

In the weeks leading up to your wedding, here’s a basic beauty timeline to have you looking and feeling gorgeous when you say “I Do”:

4 weeks : Trial run of hair and make-up! It’s a great idea to schedule your engagement or boudoir photo session on this day so you can see how your make-up will photograph. The camera sees very differently from our eyes, so even if your make-up feels a bit heavy, it will most likely look beautiful and natural on camera. If you plan to wear false lashes on your wedding day, yet don’t regularly wear them, this is a good time to try them out. You should be able to wear your lash all day without it feeling heavy or irritating. If your lashes bother you, try another style, thickness or brand.

10 days: Get your hair colored or touched up.

1 week: This is normally a very busy time! Be sure to schedule time for yourself away from the hustle and bustle. This is a great time to get a massage, facial, or go to the spa.

2 days: Manicure & Pedicure

Wedding Day: Professional hair and make-up! Stylists used to recommend arriving for formal hairstyling with dirty hair so that the style would last longer. However luckily now days there are professional products such as hair powder which can simulate texture and make your style last; so feel free to wash your hair and feel fresh on your wedding day!

Wedding TimelinesPlanning the events of your day

If you’re like most brides, your wedding day will probably be the largest and most expensive event you’ll ever plan.

The planning and creating of your wedding day involves many moving parts. From your hair stylist to your caterer and DJ, everyone will have their own “working timeline” to ensure your day goes off without a hitch.

For DIY brides, it’s important to have an overall itinerary, or plan of your wedding day events. However, keep in mind, the timeline is a guide to how you want your day to unfold; it’s not set in stone, or something to be stressed out about. I tell my brides to give the timeline some “breathing room.” Any number of unforeseen things can affecttheagenda;bybuildingflexibilityin, itwillgive you the space to relax and enjoy each moment as it happens.

If you’re working with a great team of professional vendors, then they’ll help keep things on track and moving smoothly so that you can fully enjoy your day and won’t even notice if the timeline veers.

Each wedding is unique, and there is no “set order” for things to unfold. Many couples pass on the bouquet and garter toss, or do photos before the ceremony so they can head straight to the reception. Whatever you choose, be sure to communicate with all your vendors so that everyone is on the same page.

Here’s a timeline from a 5:00 summer wedding with 100 guests to give you an idea of how much time to allocate for each portion of your day. Visit SierraWeddingGuide.com for more timeline examples and tips for your day.

WEDDING VENUES

Nevada County, recetly recognized as the Wedding Capitol of California, has quickly become a top destination wedding location for savvy Northern California brides and grooms. The area, rich in gold rush history, showcases the beauty of all four seasons; and is an easy drive from San Francisco, Reno, and Sacramento International Airports.

With its various elevations, Nevada County offers wedding sights with very distinct characteristics.AtthehigherelevationsinTruckeetherearemagnificentSierraNevada Mountains with towering pines, clear lakes, and streams. The softy rolling hills of the lower elevations offer an abundance of vineyards, wineries, and tasting rooms set amid ancient oaks. Nevada City has Victorian charm and historic architecture, while Grass Valley maintains it’s rustic down town appeal from the days of the gold miners.

Nevada County has quickly become one of the top destination wedding locations in California. Savvy couples love to tie the knot among the rolling vineyards and quaint gold-rush towns; however, couples coming from a large city often don’t consider the limited amount of lodging available in our area. On prime dates hotels can sell outmonthsinadvance, leavingguestsscramblingtofindlodging.

The thoughtful bride knows the importance of setting aside a block of local hotel rooms in honor of those who travel the distance to share her wedding memories. A room block is a set of rooms that have beensetasidespecificallyforyourguestsuntilaspecificdate, ensuringtheycaneasilyfindclean&comfortablelodgingfortheweekend.

“Therearesomanybenefitstosettinguparoomblock, saysDanielleof Grass Valley Courtyard Suites, that it’s no surprise many brides are making this one of their top priorities. “ Aside from the fact that rooms are guaranteed to be available, there are often special rates for guests who reserve within the block. The added bonus of having everyone in one spot makes it easy to socialize with guests in the moments leading up to your big day. Having hotel staff help with distributing welcome bags, assist with local information and take care of your guests in a clean, classy and comfortable environment that you have chosen to meet their needs is indeed priceless and brings you great peace of mind during this special time.

Our area is dotted with everything from historic and modern all-amenity hotels, to quaint B&B’s and private rentals. When choosing a hotel for your wedding, you should consider whether you want your guests staying in one main hotel, or scattered throughout many, and if the hotel should be in walking distance to wedding events or downtown.

Many larger hotels block rooms up to a year in advance with no deposit, while smaller hotels and B&B’s will often require individual reservations due to their limited capacity.

Once your rooms are blocked, encourage guests to reserve asap, noting the “book by” date on your save the dates. Many guests wait until the last minute to reserve, when blocks have already been released to public sale, says Kate from the Holiday Inn Express in Grass Valley.

Because there is no standard policy for blocking rooms, it’s a good idea to call a year in advance to reserve your space. This will ensure your guests have a place to stay and get you back to planning the details of your day.

Live Ceremony MusicAdding elegance to your ceremony

Selecting music to play for your wedding ceremony can be a bit overwhelming, long gone are the days of walking down the isle to only “here comes the bride”, as some modern brides are opting for music that evokes their own emotionandhaspersonalsignificance.

Although many brides initially think live music is out of the budget, it’s surprisingly affordable to hire local musicians to play during your ceremony. Typically, musicians compliment rather than replace a DJ. While live musicians often play for about 30 minutes to an hour during your ceremony processional and recessional, your DJ is still needed to provide audio and microphones during the ceremony ensuring your guests will be able to hear your vows. And while you can also add elegance to your cocktail hour by having a live musician, your DJ will pave the way for a lively and fun evening of dancing.

Live music is a great way to add a level of elegance, personalization, and emotion to a wedding ceremony. There’s something so transforming about live music, and brides who invest in this small extra say that it completely changes the mood of their ceremony. The moment a bride walks down the isle to a delicate stringed instrument, or a powerful bagpipe, is truly a magical moment. It’s amazing to see how many people are brought to tears at the sheer beauty of the elements coming together.

Lisa Stine, a local harpist says that “People often equate live ceremony music with only classical music, however it can include pop, folk, Celtic, world folk, or just about anything that touches the couples heart and style. Live music is very personalized. I’ve found that often brides don’t know what music they want, so I invite them to my home to play a variety of music for them and create a completely custom playlist.”

This is typical example of the small town, but award winning service brides will experience when hosting their

destination wedding in the Sierra Foothills.

Whether it’s a single harp or violin, a string quartet, a bagpiper, or a combination of instruments, our world class local musicians will help you create an elegant ambiance and a truly memorable wedding ceremony. Below are our favorite local musicians to help make your day magical:

Creating a meaningful ceremony. This is what the whole day is about! “The couples participation in creating a meaningful ceremony

is important, because they’re saying words and making promises that are meant to last a lifetime- it’s

important that these words are meaningful and true. This doesn’t have to take a long time, but

having the right person to guide you through this process is important.” says Rev. Karen Stone.

Although there is no longer a “typical” wedding ceremony, most ceremonies will include the following

elements, which couples personalize in countless ways:

LIGHT & SOUNDTwo essential factors to a perfect wedding

Two of the largest overlooked details when planning an outdoor wedding, are ensuring the event has adequate sound and lighting. It’s very common for couples to get caught up in planning the visual details

and simply not realize that in outdoor ceremonies where there’s no

walls to contain the sound, it’s nearly impossible for guests to hear

their vows. The other huge mistake is neglecting to add proper lighting

to the reception, keeping your guests in the dark.

If you’re working with a professional wedding planner, they’ll be sure

to make recommendations about what’s needed. Yet many DIY brides

don’t think of this until it’s too late, so if you’re planning your wedding

solo, it’s essential to cover the basics.

SOUND: Greg Whatley of Mountain Event Productions says “ the

most important thing you can remember about your event is to make

sure that your guests can hear the ceremony by using mic. There is

nothing more disappointing to a family member or friend who has

travelledtoseeyourbigday,thantoarriveandfindthattheyare

unable to hear the heart-felt vows you are sharing with each other. “

A professional DJ & MC service will provide your ceremony and

reception with proper audio and microphones.

LIGHTING: Lighting will not only create a safe environment for your

guests to walk around and mingle, but a professional lighting designer

can completely transform the mood of your reception. Just watch

any romantic movie scene, and you’ll see that light is what creates the

romantic mood, says Professional Lighting Designer Josh of Lighthouse Installations in Nevada County.

Lighting helps generate memories, and emotions. It can be used to

create a warm, glowy, romantic feel, or to liven up your guests on

thedancefloorwithmovingcoloredlights.Forbrideswhothink

stringing up some twinkle lights will save money, they are often sadly

disappointed. Twinkle lights will not adequately light a large outdoor

area, or create ambiance the way a lighting designer can. Even worse,

strings of lights can create a tripping hazard from multiple cords, and

often end up looking tacky rather than romantic. When you put so

much time, energy, and money into planning the details of your day, it’s

important to go the extra step to ensure your memories can be both

seen and heard.

YOUR WEDDING DJ

When it comes to keeping your wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, toasts and entire reception timeline running smoothly without any “dead air”, there’s a lot more to the equation than simply running a playlist of your favorite songs. On occasion couples consider going with a friend or inexperienced DJ not understanding the behind-the-scenes details which truly make or break the ambiance of their day.

AgoodDJ/MCdoesn’tjustplaymusic,hefacilitateswhatthebrideandgroomhaveplannedand ensures they are involved in every aspect of the day. This person needs to be able to engage with the guests and be capable of moving them from one event to another without coming off pushy. For brides without a coordinator, the DJ’s role becomes even more important ,astheytypicallybecomesthe“goto”personwhoensuresthedayflowssmoothly.Ifyourtimeline gets off schedule, a skilled DJ and MC will be able to keep your guests entertained and enjoying themselves without any awkward lulls.

Because every couple and wedding is unique, it’s important to work with your DJ to set the reception timeline and events. You should also discuss the genre and style of music you want playedthroughoutyourday, includinganyspecificsongsortypesofmusicyoudislikeanddon’twant played. Music has a wonderful way of setting the mood throughout an event, and although it’s not necessary to give your DJ a complete “playlist”, as a couple you should at minimum be selectingspecificsongsforeacheventthroughoutthedaywhichinclude:

•4songsfortheceremony(honoredseating,bridalpartyprocessional,bride,andrecessional) •Announcementofthebridalparty •Specialdances(firstdance/mother-son/father-daughter) •CakeCutting •Bouquettosses •Lastdance

If have no idea what songs you want for these events, a good DJ will offer suggestions and help pick music that suits your taste and will set the mood for a meaningful and memorable wedding!

THE FIRST LOOKIs it really bad luck to see each other before the ceremony?

As history has it, the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony dates back toarrangedmarriageswhenthegroomsfirstglimpseofhisbridewasuponremovingher veil following the ceremony. This ensured he didn’t change his mind in the event his bride was less than attractive.

Today many couples choose to see each other before the ceremony, and it’s even common to take photos pre-wedding. This ensures your make-up is fresh, and cuts down on photos after the ceremony allowing you to get to your reception quickly.

Some couples worry that the “moment” will be lost if they see each other before walking down the isle. However, after photographing hundreds of weddings, I’ve found the opposite is true. The “First Look” is an extremely intimate and special moment arranged between the bride and groom. It’s more likely for him to break out in tears during this intimate encounter, than at the altar surrounded by family and friends.

I love to arrange these moments for my couples. As a photographer, it takes a certain finesse, presence, andlevelofthoughtfulnesstoensurethemomentisjustright, insteadof being a “photo -op”.

Seeing each other before the ceremony is a very personal choice, and one that couples should both be in agreement on. For couples who want to connect pre ceremony while savingthe“firstlook”fortheisle,Ioftenarrange“blindencounters.”Thisistimetoconnect with your future spouse before the wedding while not seeing each other; it can be holding hands between a doorway, spending a moment with him blindfolded, or coming up to hold him from behind knowing he won’t turn around and peek at you. It can also be as simple as exchanging letters with each other.

Whetherit’sablindencounteroracompletefirstlook, connectingbeforetheceremony has a way of both calming nerves and building excitement at the same time. It allows you time to breathe and spend quality moments together on a day that can often feel very full.
