2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK

AUSTIN UNIVERSITY BEGINS ITS HOCKEY SEASON ON OCT. 11 VS. PROVIDENCE

Austin University enters the 2014-15 sea-son poised to make a run at their second straight Western Collegiate Hockey Con-

ference Championship. “We’ve retained our core players and believe we have the leadership and experience to succeed this season,” head coach Pete Lableu said. “With that belief, there is an expecta-tion for success as there always is here.” The Wranglers enter the new year after earn-ing the sixth WCHC Championship in program his-tory and first under Coach Lableu. Coach Lableu is adamant on the team not being hung up on their past success. “We’re starting all over, just like everybody else,” Lableu said. “We have the targets on out backs and everybody is looking to take us out. We need to be even better than we were last year to get to where we want to be.” Last years alternate captain, senior Kirk Shattenkev, was chosen to lead the team this year as

captain. “We feel Kirk blossomed as a leader for this team last year and gained a lot of respect from the guys in the room,” the coach said. Fellow seniors Riley Super and Dusty Gray will serve as alternate captains. After losing only four seniors, 17 members of last years 26-win team return, including three 25-point scorers, one 20-goal scorer in Kaner Patri-cia, all six starting defensemen, and All-American goaltender James Howland. In addition to an abundance of veteran returners, the Wranglers have added a strong class of freshman for this season. The class, ranked 11th in the nation by cawlidgehawkey.com, includes four forwards, two defensemen, and a goalie. The Wranglers were predicted to finish first in the WCHC by both cbssports.com and cawlidge-hawkey.com. Lableu, his staff - assistant coaches Dan Granada and Paul Husey - and the Wranglers begin their season on Saturday, October 11, vs. Provi-dence in the 2014 Ice Breaker Invitational.

Sophomore Kaner Patricia is one of 17 returners from last years team
