This summer we’ll be turning our attention to the great female heroines of our heritage, 100 years of Benjamin Britten, literary greats, a decade of Europe’s largest Crime-Writing Festival and the 48th Harrogate Festival.

In 1912, suffragette Agnes Wilson of 4Studley Road smashed the stereotype ofthe genteel Harrogate lady and took part ina window-smashing campaign in London. In 1913, Emily Wilding Davison, the famous militant suffragette, died after being trampled by King George V’s horse.

Marking the centenary of their spirit and sacrifi ce, we’re bringing you a line-up of some of the country’s fi nest female talent. From the femme fatales of crime fi ction – Val McDermid, Susan Hill, Ruth Rendell and Kate Atkinson, and queens of literature Joanne Harris and Judy Finnigan, to Lianne La Havas, Jacqui Dankworth, Lesley Garrett, Zoe Rahman and Clare Teal.

Our special guest curators ensure we celebrate the best of the established and push the boundaries of the new and unexpected. We’re delighted to welcome back our literary curator Henry Sutton who welcomes to the Raworths Literature and Lecture Series a host of authors and speakers, including Michael Palin, Richard and Judy and BBC Radio 2’s Stuart Maconie.

We couldn’t let 2013 go by without a nod to Britain’s greatest modern composer,Benjamin Britten, in his centenary year. The Festival programme celebrates Britten and his infl uences with the Carducci Quartetand delves deep into the past with the defi nitive Britten biographer Paul Kildea, while some of our Young Musicians demonstrate how Britten’s repertoire is as relevant as ever to the next generation of artists.

This year, the Festival is growing even bigger and better, with Festival fever kicking offin June with the return of the Festival Spiegeltent. Playing host to Craig Charles,

Zoe Rahman and The Gypsy Queens, the Spiegeltent is also home to our growing Children’s Festival.

Want more? Join us as we celebrate a decade of Europe’s largest crime writing event, the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime WritingFestival. Highlights this year include Val McDermid, Lee Child, Kate Atkinson, Charlaine Harris, Susan Hill, Ruth Rendell interviewed by Jeanette Winterson and William McIlvanney in conversation with Ian Rankin.

Each year the Festival enthrals, inspires and entertains. Whether sparking young imaginations in our Children’s Festival, inspiring a new generation of Young Musicians to take to the world-stage,bringing destinations to life with non-

traditional arts venues like the Spiegeltent, or celebrating the world’s greatest musicians, writers and artists on your very doorstep – Harrogate Festival has it all.

With so much going on this summer, the Festival stretches from our Spiegeltent in June through to the Festival Finale at theend of July. There’s something for everyone so delve in and fi nd your Festival this year.

Armonico Consort: Concert by Candlelight Programme: Naked Byrd

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the 16 angelic voices of Armonico Consort to perform in the unparalleled atmosphere of the Festivals’ Candle-lit Concert in St Wilfrid’s Church. Naked Byrd is a programme created in the ensemble’s inimitable style, embracing the tradition of acappella versions of choral pieces by composers who, in the words of the Consort’s artistic director Christopher Monks, “wore their hearts on their sleeves”.Thus alongside the familiar repertoire ranging from Byrd’s Ave Verum to Barber’s Agnus Dei and Hildegard of Bingen can be found more recent compositions by Tavener and the Consort’s own Jonathan Roberts, both of whom contribute moving pieces based around texts by William Blake.

Carducci Quartet Programme: Britten and his infl uences - ‘War and Humanity’

Tying in with the nation’s centenary celebrations of Benjamin Britten, the Carducci’s programme explores Britten and his infl uences, ‘War and humanity’. Britten left England for the US in 1939 as a proclaimed pacifi st and was commissioned to write his String Quartet No. 1 in 1941.Such was its impact that Britten wasawarded the Library of Congress medal for services to chamber music before his return to the UK in 1942 as a ‘conscientious

objector’ to the war. The programme explores the friendship between Britten and Shostakovich; both composers being exiles of sorts within their own countries, their music connected by strong anti-war convictions. With Beethoven representing a heavy infl uence on Britten as he began his composing career, this insightful concert is a true celebration of Britten and his musical anthology.

The programme opens with Rimsky Korsakov’s musical translation of Spanish folk music, now a standard in Russian repertoire, followed by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2, arguably one of the most infl uential and enduringly popular pieces of the composer’s canon, epitomising the Romantic movement. This awe-inspiring concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s 6th and fi nal symphony, fi rst performed just nine days before the composer’s death, 120 years ago. Early booking is highly recommended.

Clare Teal presents: an evening with Sir Tim Rice, Special Guests & the BBC Radio Leeds Big Band

Dear Music Lovers,

As many of you know I am no stranger to this festival and am proud to have a long association with such a forward thinking outfi t who annually present artists from all over the world but who also realise the importance of supporting local talent too.

Last year my long time dream to build a big band from scratch came true. The idea of bringing local people of all ages and from all walks of life together to create something that celebrates the music I love and the power of community proved too irresistible. Of course Yorkshire with its noble brass tradition was the perfect place to base the project and with BBC Radio Leeds behind us all the way our journey began.

Over 100 musicians came to audition and from these talented masses we arrived at the brilliant bunch who last October sold out their debut gig at Leeds Town Hall. A high level of musicianship is demanded from all our members and in addition each section of our big band is mentored by one of the fi nest jazz musicians currently working in the UK. Together they create a truly awesome sound.

I was thrilled that the organisers leapt at the opportunity to support the band by showcasing them at this year’s festival. The legendary songwriting genius and top bloke that is Sir Tim Rice loves the project and so is coming to host our show. Conducted by the brilliant Grant Windsor, the band and myself will be joined on stage by jazz singer extraordinaire, Ian Shaw who makes a welcome return to the RoyalHall after his knockout appearance in 2011 and newcomer young singer and Halifax born AJ Brown.

Our community ensemble pays homage to the history of big band and also refl ects the music we listen to today. Big bands are cool!

It’s an inspirational story and we look forward to unleashing upon you a spine tingling programme that will delight and uplift even the grumpiest Yorkshireman!

Big love from Clare XX

Raworths Literature and Lecture Series

Bringing books to life is one of the key aims of an author. Hearing an author explain his or her ideas, inspiration and intention, can only aid

the process. It’s that link between reader and writer, between experience and the imagination, between exploration and understanding, which carries so much enrichment. No wonder literary festivals are so popular. They are endlessly dynamic, enlightening and enjoyable. At Harrogate this year we are embracing diversity, integrity, adventurousness, gender, humour, confl ict, politics, science, gilded ages, harmonious sounds and fancy crusts.

We are also delighted to be welcoming Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, who of course have done so much over the last decade to promote reading in this country with their famous book club. In Harrogate they’ll be talking candidly about their own novels, while one of their spring choices, Rachel Joyce’s The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, is featuring as the Raworth’s Book Club novel. Come and meet Rachel Joyce as well, during what promises to be a most engaging and entertaining four days in July.

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is responsible forthe most beloved novel in the history of the English language. As 2013 marks the bicentenary of Pride and Prejudice, the fi nest Austen experts gather to discuss her remarkable legacy. Paula Byrne is the author of The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things. As her family destroyed the majority of her letters, Byrne brilliantly illuminates Austen through the objects connected to her life. Paula is joined by Deborah Moggach, bestselling author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, who discusses adapting the novel withthe most famous opening line in literary history; a challenge that resulted in a BAFTAnominated screenplay starring Keira Knightley. Bharat Tandon, Austen academic, author and 2012 judge of the Man Booker Prize, chairs the debate. Tickets: £8 Unreserved

Friday 12th July St George Hotel | 8pm

An Evening with Richard and Judy

From the iconic Monty Python years, to eight huge adventures for the BBC including the recent Brazil, to two volumes of best-selling diaries and travel books, Michael Palin is undoubtedly a national treasure.More recently Yorkshire-born Palin has turned his hand to novel-writing and comes to the Harrogate stage to discuss his second and latest novel, The Truth. Following the story of Keith Mabbut, who ends up travelling to the hotspots of India after being offered the opportunity to write a biography of legendary idealist and activist Hamish Melville, it is a novel that the Guardian terms ‘gripping’ and ‘triumphant’ and could only be penned by one with such a world of experience and insight behind him as Palin. Journalist Danuta Kean will act as interviewer.

The remarkable, bestselling debut novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is deservedly the Raworths Book Club festival choice to be explored and debated by local readers. We hope readers and members of all local book clubs will consume this novel with the passion that so many thousands of people, around the world already have, and then come to listen to and question the author about both Harold Fry’s and her own extraordinary journeys. For many years Rachel Joyce was a successful writer of radio plays, and then she hit upon the idea of Harold Fry and trying her hand at a novel. Rachel will also be talking about her brand new novel, Perfect, during the event, to bechaired by the Festivals literature curator Henry Sutton. Audience participation at this book club special event is very much encouraged. Tickets: £8 Unreserved

It’s a phenomenon dubbed ‘the Richard and Judy effect’ – if a novel is in their book club, it virtually guarantees bestseller status, making them one of the most powerful couples in publishing, as well as one of the most successful partnerships in TV history. Now the couple are playing it as its own game with their fi rst foray into fi ction. Richard Madeley’s novel, Some Day I’ll Find You, features sexy, handsome, fi ghter pilot James Blackwood – every girl’s dream - but is he? Meanwhile, Judy Finnigan’s novel, Eloise, weaves the story of Cathy, who after mourning the death of her best friend Eloise, is haunted by her in her dreams in a complex web of family intrigue, betrayal and deception. This is a rare opportunity to see the candid pair in conversation on their debut novels. Journalist Danuta Kean will chair the discussion.

Spotlight on Women’s Fiction with Harriet Evans, Chrissie Manby and Polly Williams

Saturday 13th July St George Hotel | 12pm

Great British Bake Off Winner John Whaite

We all know women read more than men. They are also, arguably, the more discerning for it. The women’s fi ction market is both very broad and highly sophisticated. Publishers love labels such as Chick Lit and Yummy Mummies, but do readers and authors? And just wheredoes expectation come into play? In our fast changing world the gender debate still seems to be very muchalive and kicking. Is it a controlling factor in women’s fi ction, or something to be dismissed as prehistoric? In what is set to be a fascinating debateand celebration of women’s fi ction, join bestselling authors Chrissie Manby, whose fi rst novel Inspiration explored some frantic bed-hopping in the artists’ community of St Ives. Since then she has written 25 novels in 17 years, including erotic fi ction. Harriet Evans isthe author of the bestsellers including Going Home and A Hopeless Romantic, andpassionately rallies against the sexism and prejudice rife in her genre. And Polly Williams is author of the debut bestseller, the Rise and Fall of a Yummy Mummy, who has since produced six more novels including recent Husband, Missing. She also writes for Red, Marie Claireand The Sunday Times. Danuta Kean, journalist and books editor for Mslexia, themagazine for women writers, is perfectly placed to chair the discussion.

Tickets: £8 Unreserved

What makes John Whaite great? Well, for one thing, he won the BBC’s Great British Bake Off in 2012 using architectural plans to whip up a miniature Roman Coliseum out of gingerbread. He applied gold leaf to his winning cake, fi nessing its chocolate coating with a hair dryer. In fact, gold leaf, pure vanilla-bean paste, and chestnut puree are John’s ‘must-have’ ingredients. Despite the elaborately brilliant Bake Off, his new book, John Whaite Bakes: Recipes for Every Day and Every Mood, explores how you can make indulgent, delicious bakes to suit every mood and every day; happy, alone, sad, with friendsor lovers. Whaite talks about his tantalising recipes from Apple and Thyme Sausage Rolls for comfort, to the romantic Passion Fruit Tart and the show-stopping Hellfi re and Brimstone Cake.

See Whaite in conversation with Yorkshire chef and Great British Menu star, Stephanie Moon. Be inspired to crack out the cake tins, and to go in search of gold–leaf, that is.

Ten years ago, a handful of us were cajoled into putting together a crime festival in the sedate Victorian spa town of Harrogate. We called in favours from reluctant friends, persuaded publishers to come north of the M25 and compiled a programme that excited us. We hoped it would attract readers too.

We must have done something right, because the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is now the most vibrant and popular event of its kind anywhere in the world. Because we’re inclusive. We include the very best writers, from newbies to icons of the genre. We include translated fi ction, TV and fi lm adaptation, a quiz and, of course, beer. We don’t hide the writers away – we include them in the rolling party in the bar. And in everything we do, we include the readers. Because writers without readers are redundant.

Enjoy your visit. Enjoy becoming part of the heritage of homicide.
