Tigers in the MLB & Pacific All-AmericansChase Headley’s debut with the San Diego Padres in 2007 marked the ninth former Pacific Tiger to have appeared in the MLB. Before Headley, D. J. Houlton was a starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005 and 2007. Headley and Houlton joined former Tigers

Norm Bass (Kansas City Athlet-ics (1961-’6)), Grant Dunlap (St. Louis Cardinals (195)), Joe Fergu-son (Los Angeles Dodgers (1970-’76, ‘78-’80, ‘81), St. Louis Cardinals (1976), Houston Astros (1977-’78), & California Angels (1981, ‘82-’8)), Keith Johnson (Anaheim Angels, 2002), Dan Reichert (Kansas City Royals, (1999-’02), & Toronto Blue Jays (‘0)), Rob Sperring (Chicago Cubs, (1974-’76) & Houston Astros (1977)), John Strohmayer (Mon-treal Expos, (1970-7) & New York Mets (197-74)).

Pacific Baseball boasts two All-Americans in program history as Dan Reichert earned the honor in 1997, while Justin Baum was a Freshman All-American in 2005.

Pacific Women’s Volleyball Pacific Baseball 6 2008 Media Guide

After suffering through an injury plagued 2007 season that saw the Tigers finish at 16-4, the Pacific Baseball program looks to return to the form that helped the Tigers post the first back-to-back 0-win seasons in 2005 and 2006.

While the on-field development of the Pacific Baseball program continues, the Tigers are also continuing to improve other aspect of the program. During fall of 2007, two additional features of Klein Family Field were completed. Located just beyond the center field wall, Pacific installed a set of new batting cages.

“The addition of cages to our facility has allowed our team to get a lot more hitting in and that has already shown in their development,” said Pacific head coach Ed Sprague.

Making a more dramatic impact, the Tigers completed installation of lights at Klein Family Field. Already one of the finest collegiate fields on the west coast, the addition of lights allows the Tigers to play night games. “Lights help the program in three ways. Most important, our players can spend more time in the classroom with practice and games being held at night. Secondly, several of our games will be played at night, and being able to practice under the lights helps our team recognize pitches more quickly and simulate game situations more accurately,” said Sprague. “Finally, Friday and Saturday night games allow more people to come watch our team and grow our fan base.”

PitchingPacific’s pitching staff will be led by a new, but familiar, voice during the 2008 season as Jim Yanko returns for his second stint as the Tigers’ pitching coach. Formerly the head coach of Delta College, Yanko was the Pacific pitching coach from 1996-99.

Yanko inherits a strong group of hurlers that gained a great deal of experience during the 2007 sea-son. Sophomores David Rowse (Pleas-anton, Calif.) and Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) return after mak-ing a combined 26 starts last season. Rowse was second on the team in 2007 with 82.2 innings pitched and showed flashes of brilliance, including an eight-inning, two-hit ef-fort to defeat No. 24 Baylor, -1 on Mar.

. Carnevale, tossed 76.2 innings last season, including a combined shutout of Cal State Northridge on Feb. 4.

Providing compe-ition in the start-ing rotation will be junior Cole Akins (Seattle, Wash.), who asserted himself as a force down the stretch of last season and freshman Tyler Waldron (Pilot Hill, Calif.).

Akins was 2-4 with two saves in 59.0 in-nings for the Tigers last season. Cole closed the season with five consecutive strong starts. The 2007 Sacramento Player of the Year, Waldron posted a stellar 0.65 ERA during his senior season, allowing just seven earned runs in 76.0 innings. Waldron recorded 151 strikeouts and issued just 17 walks in 2007.
