Many of you know Mr. Robert Steen. He is writing the complete history of UNA from its earliest roots as LaGrange College to the present. But, as I am fond of joking with Mr. Steen, our history is happening faster than he is able to chronicle it. The year just ending is a fine example of what I mean. Construction of our Science and Technology Building began in May, and progress is impressive. The call to join with us to complete the final steps for funding has been met with enthusiasm, helping us draw nearer to our goal. We have been blessed in this effort with major support from the City of Florence, an additional commitment from the State, and the generosity of many of you, our alumni and friends.

Even as the Science and Technology Building takes form and the Academic and Student Commons Building nears completion, we are in detailed discussions with Capstone Development, a major national firm specializing in student housing, with the immediate aim of placing about 750 new beds in two buildings at the northern perimeter of campus. Capstone has presented a magnificent plan that would extend along a north-south axis our classic design created by the Olmstead brothers in 1929. The full concept, to

be implemented in phases, would create a living-learning village on the north campus.

Preview Day this fall brought some 2,500 prospective students and family members to campus. The campus is as beautiful as I’ve ever seen it, making a perfect impression. Our faculty did their usual superb job showcasing our academic programs. We are uniformly hopeful that all those prospective students become alums in four or five years.

The 2012-13 year was also a time for UNA to be especially thankful to the hundreds of individuals who help us move from good to great. We could not be a state and national leader in Study Abroad opportunities for students without you, nor could we have arguably the finest music programs in Alabama without you, or the strong athletic teams that bring pride and recognition to the university, or the chance to open doors of opportunity for worthy students who might otherwise forego college, or to create the infrastructure that makes all this possible. The individuals recognized in this volume do all those things and more, and it makes me proud to work with such an amazing group of loyal supporters.

All my best, Bill Cale

During the depth of the Great Depression, young Mary Deeters – then a student at Florence State Teachers College – came to the inescapable conclusion that she was out of money and would have to give up her college education.

Reluctantly, Deeters called on the school’s president, Dr. Henry J. Willingham, to thank him for the opportunity and say her sad goodbyes. Willingham insisted she would not be leaving and responded by assuring her that he would come up with the resources that would help her continue her studies.

Deeters went on to graduate from the college in 1938, with majors in English and education and minors in mathematics and science. Over the years she worked as a teacher, a printer’s assistant with the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., and finally as a research chemist. Throughout her life, Deeters never forgot that gesture of kindness, commitment and support made by Willingham – or the difference a college education had made in her life.

Upon her death in March of this year, at the age of 96, Deeters made it clear that she had always kept her college alma mater – now the University of North Alabama – close to her heart. Prior to her death, she made a provision in her will to donate more than $1-million to the university.

“Mary Deeters lived an exemplary life, and she leaves to her alma mater an enduring legacy of educational opportunity,” UNA President Dr. William G. Cale remarked. “Just as she was helped

when she was a student in need, Mary Deeters now shares this magnificent gift with those who would learn.”

Dr. Dan Hendricks, UNA’s vice president for advancement, added that Deeters’ kindness is deeply appreciated – and her generosity will certainly not go unnoticed.

“Mrs. Deeters’ wonderful gift to students at UNA shows how the hands of generosity extend and join across the generations,” Hendricks observed. “She leaves a legacy of incalculable value to the ages.”

Dr. John Thornell, UNA’s vice president for academic affairs and provost, called the Deeters Scholarship Fund “an important addition to the overall enrollment management strategy” at UNA.

“More and more students are seeking financial support for their schooling,” Thornell noted, “and the Deeters Fund makes a significant contribution to that need.”

Mary Deeters remembered the university throughout her life and expressed her gratitude on many earlier occasions. In 1994, she donated a handmade heirloom coverlet crafted by her grandmother, Mary B. Anderson (known as “Aunt Pop”), in South Carolina in the 1840s. “Aunt Pop’s Coverlet,” which is now displayed in Norton Auditorium, features a pattern known as “Snake in the Wilderness.” A plaque in Deeters’ honor reads that “Aunt Pop” not only made the coverlet while she was still a teenager, but also carded the wool, spun and dyed the thread and wove the fabric.

Another heirloom, “Georgia’s Doll” – also displayed in Norton – represents another gift from Deeters to the University. The doll first belonged to her mother, Georgia Florence Cook Matthews. A friend gave Georgia Matthews the doll that now bears her name for Christmas in 1890. Though the doll’s body had been damaged, its head remained intact. In the 1940s, Deeters’ younger sister, Mae Matthews White, repaired “Georgia’s Doll” and gave it to Deeters, who in turn donated the doll to the UNA Foundation in 2000.

To express her appreciation for the education she and three of her siblings received at Florence State Teachers College, Deeters also established the Raymond F. and Mary Deeters Endowed Scholarship.

Deeters made sure to remember her heritage in everything she did, and the scholarships she funded will help provide aid to students from Fairview High School in Cullman County, where she taught school shortly after her graduation from Florence State.

“Money has never meant much to me personally,” Deeters once remarked. “What money can do for others is what money means to me.”

Because of Mary Brown Matthews Deeters’ graciousness, Deeters Scholars are not only able to appreciate their heritage; they attend a university that will prosper from the generous gifts she continued to give, even in death.

University of North Alabama students now have the opportunity to receive locally funded scholarships courtesy of Bank Independent and the family of Edward Fennel Mauldin.

In memory of the late bank chairman, the Mauldins have established the Edward Fennel Maudlin Endowed Scholarships to aid freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and fifth-year students as they strive to complete their educations. Three scholarships have been endowed, with two more endowments to be added in the next two years, resulting in a total of five scholarships.

“Our dad believed that any exposure to college was better than none,” said Mauldin’s son, Macke Mauldin, a third-

generation banker and president of Bank Independent. “He had a keen interest in making sure his friends and neighbors attended college or had the opportunity for some post-secondary education. He was a tremendous supporter of the University of North Alabama and strongly believed in UNA’s mission to educate the young people of north Alabama. With these scholarships, we hope to extend his vision and execute the mission in which he so firmly believed.”

Bank Independent stretches across north Alabama, boasting a total of 27 branches. Edward Mauldin began working with the Tennessee Valley-based company in 1959, serving as chairman of the bank from 1982 until his death in 2010. He was

passionate about establishing a number of UNA endowments, and through those scholarships his lifelong support of the university will benefit generations.

UNA President Dr. William G. Cale, said he admires the Mauldin family’s dedication to the university, and he praised their mission to provide high-quality education to outstanding students. In turn, Cale said, an area of the UNA College of Business will be named in Edward Mauldin’s memory.

“One of the great joys of working in this area is that the families who built our community are, to a great extent, still here and making tremendous contributions,” he said. “The Mauldin family’s commitment to educational

attainment is extraordinary and will assist UNA students forever. In the process of doing that, they once again add to the foundation that makes our community stronger.”

This year’s recipients are freshman Brittany Michael of Florence, sophomore Logan Heflin of Town Creek and junior Noelle Ingle of Florence.

Vice President for Advancement Dr. Dan Hendricks expressed his gratitude to the Mauldins.

“We thank the Mauldin family and Bank Independent for their boundless generosity,” Hendricks said. “Their partnership with UNA in support of students meets financial need and advances educational excellence.”

When a three-year veteran of UNA’s volleyball team lost her life to acute myeloid leukemia earlier this year, an anonymous donor responded by funding an endowed scholarship in her name.

Caroline Morgan Niesler – called “Scrappy” by friends and family – was 21 years old when she died on May 15. UNA Head Volleyball Coach Stephanie Radecki said losing Niesler was a tragedy.

“Caroline inspired me every day,” Radecki said. “She was everything we aspire our athletes to be: dedicated, passionate, competitive and a wonderful person. She touched the lives of so many.”

Niesler arrived at the university in 2010, accepting a scholarship after winning the volleyball state championship in back-to-back years — 2007 and 2008 — during her time at Jacksonville High

School. She was named an all-star athlete both seasons. In 2009, Niseler led her high school team to the state play-off game.

While playing volleyball at UNA, Niesler was chosen for the All-Academic Team in the Gulf South Conference for two consecutive seasons.

Through the Caroline Morgan Niesler Endowed Scholarship, she will continue to help fellow athletes achieve success as they work to complete their educations.

“An anonymous donor stepped forward with a large monetary donation, allowing us to establish an endowed scholarship with the UNA Foundation,” Radecki said. “The Caroline Morgan Niesler Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a female student athlete

who has exhausted her eligibility and is completing the requirements toward receiving a degree from the University of North Alabama.”

A committee made up of the head coaches of all women’s athletic teams at UNA will select recipients, along with the Office of Student Financial Services. Athletic Director Mark Linder will approve the selection.

“The donor’s intent is that the recipient of this scholarship has demonstrated leadership skills and a passion for competition and has represented the university in a positive manner — characteristics that Caroline possessed,” Radecki said. “This scholarship was established to honor Caroline and the impact she made on everyone around her – and to celebrate her life.”

The name-bearing endowed scholarship isn’t the only way Niesler will be remembered.

Through the 2013 season, Jacksonville High School volleyball players wrote her initials on the left shoulders of the warm-up jackets. The

season, dedicated to Niesler, ended with the team again winning the state championship. Thoughts of Niesler were not lost during the celebration: Her sister, Katie Niesler, was a game-changing member of the team who was named the state’s Most Valuable Player.

After her death, another of Niesler’s sisters, Elizabeth, penned a tribute to the sister she lost.

“The world lost a beautiful, strong woman this morning,” Elizabeth Niesler wrote. “The grief we feel is beyond words, but we know that she is in a wonderful new place having the time of her life. She is no longer suffering, no longer hurting, no longer worried. She laughs without fear of the future. I have not only lost a sister, but a part of me. She is in a better place and we will celebrate and cherish the life she had.”

The first recipient of the Caroline Morgan Niesler Endowed Scholarship is former UNA volleyball player Cara Gregg, a four-year letterman at the outside hitter position for the years 2009-2012.

Daniel Harris’ passion for singing will live on in the UNA Department of Music through a scholarship that bears his name.

The UNA graduate’s parents, James and Sharon Harris, established the Daniel C. Harris Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor their son, who died earlier this year at the age of 38.

Harris was a lifelong vocalist who began singing not long after his birth in Sheffield. UNA students who receive the scholarship will also demonstrate a penchant for singing. The UNA Department of Music faculty will select the award’s recipients, according to Melissa Pettus, UNA’s Director of Endowed Scholarships and Stewardship.

At the age of 16, Harris began performing with the Shoals Chamber Singers, but he shared his abilities with a number of organizations. He met Anna Brawley, who remains a friend of the Harris family, when they both sang in the Florence Camerata.

“He always wanted to share things that he loved with other people,” Brawley said. “Some of his high school friends said they have gained an appreciation for choral music, and they traced it back to Daniel.”

Though Harris’ talents and passions extended far beyond music, Brawley pointed out that his technical knowledge of music was extraordinary. Without even hearing the sound in question, Harris

expertly diagnosed the problem with a note Brawley had called him one day to report and question.

Harris was what Brawley jokingly called a “bari-tenor” — his voice had a range that allowed him to sing tenor or baritone. He was paid to sing at the Cathedral Church of the Advent and St. Luke’s in Birmingham. He also sang in Florence at his home church, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal in Florence.

Brawley said music was certainly Harris’ first love. However, it wasn’t his only interest. He also found great joy in theatre, performing in a number of local productions. His credits included You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, The King and I, The Magic Flute, The Lion in Winter and, most recently, The Importance of Being Earnest.

Harris certainly thrived in the arts, but he earned a pilot’s license in 2001 and also had a mind for science. Brawley said Harris had aspirations of following in his mother’s footsteps to become a cardiac nurse.

In whatever he did, though, Brawley said Harris always kept her laughing.

“Daniel was really funny,” she said. “He was very much known for his sense of humor.”

Dear Friends,

Leon Louis Smith, the man his UNA Marketing and Management students knew as “Bud,” passed away on August 25, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. As a faculty member in the UNA School of Business for 23 years, Bud was voted by his students “Outstanding Professor” three times.Bud’s energy and positive attitude resonated with students as he motivated thousands over the years to pursue their passion in business. I recall my fi rst Basic Marketing class in 1979 as a sophomore at UNA. Bud’s lecture inspired me to become an entrepreneur that day, and I am forever grateful to him. I felt special in Bud’s class, even though I was a typical student. Bud had the unique ability to make all of us feel special. Bud Smith made learning a pleasure.Bud mentored students with diverse backgrounds, including international students, athletes, adults studying part-time and many others. He encouraged all of us to strive to be the best that we could be and never give up on our dreams. I give Bud Smith much of the credit for preparing me to compete in the business world.

Bud loved life and life loved him back. He had a charisma and a charm that was electric – it was magnetic! Students wanted to take his classes. We all knew that we had to sign up early or his classes would be full. Bud Smith loved to teach.

In addition to being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bud was also superior in his other roles: He was a leader, an intellect, teacher, soldier, offi cer, athlete, gardener, carpenter, coach, referee, business man, philosopher, musician. I could go on and on. But to me, Bud Smith was my mentor and my friend.Bud left his mark on this world, and it will be felt for many years to come. His ideals will live through all of us that he touched as we pass them on to those we touch. In the immortal words of the poet Bessie Anderson, Bud’s “life was an inspiration, his memory a benediction.” A group of Bud’s former students and I have established the L.L. “Bud” Smith Marketing and Management Scholarship Fund. We have received donations to date that equal 20 percent of the amount that we need to have the scholarship endowed. Former students, faculty and friends of Bud’s that would like to join us in preserving his memory can contribute with a tax-deductible donation.

Thanks for remembering UNA and Bud Smith in this nice way.

Mark D. Smith, Bachelor of Science ’82

“There are more than 575 chapters in the United States, including Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Alaska,” he said. “They all must be in contact with the national secretary-treasurer, who works from UNA’s campus.”

The university is also home to Tri Beta’s executive president, he added.

“I would like to say I’ve had a hand in getting the positions of national secretary and national president on UNA’s campus,” Yokley said. “All of the chapters in the United States must refer to (the executive committee) in order to add additional members each year or purchase additional items or to pay dues. We’re really fortunate that the positions are here.”

To apply for the Beta Beta Beta Endowed Scholarship, applicants must be associate or regular members of Beta Zeta and have a minimum of a 3.0 grade-point average in biology, according to Melissa Pettus, UNA’s Director of Endowed Scholarships and Stewardship. An overall GPA of 2.5 is also required, she added.

Dr. Paul Yokley not only taught biology at the University of North Alabama from 1950-1993. He also founded UNA’s chapter of Beta Beta Beta (Tri Beta) during his third year on campus. He is also responsible for enhancing the Beta Beta Beta Endowed Scholarship, which awards $500 scholarships to eligible students at the university who are members of the Beta Zeta Chapter of Tri Beta.

Yokley has served since 1976 on Tri Beta’s executive committee as Vice President for the Southeastern States. The executive committee governs all national chapters. He became an active member of the honor society for biology students in 1948, while attending Peabody College in Nashville.

“I was a student member of Tri Beta at Peabody, and then when I started teaching at Florence State Teachers’ College in 1950, we began to explore the idea of having a chapter,” Yokley said. “In 1953, I became the advisor and the initial faculty member of the Beta Zeta chapter

at Florence State Teachers College, and I remained as the advisor until I retired.”

Simultaneously, Yokley was named Tri Beta’s district director. Beta Zeta’s district includes seven Southeastern states. When he took on the role of executive vice president, Yokley began working with hundreds of Tri Beta chapters.

Una Vision

This past year has been a time of transition and change for Rogers Hall and the UNA Advancement Office. To begin with, we spent a year preparing for the quiet launch of a university comprehensive campaign slated for 2014. To that end, college deans and directors have worked with Advancement to design their cases for support. These cases are blueprints for the future development of our university. They are ways we aim to “Build the Pride.” In particular, we want to raise dollars to support our students and faculty, find new sources of financial support for academic programs and identify new dollars to pay for facility improvements.

I have also spent the last 12 months meeting you. It has been a special pleasure to see the love and loyalty you have for UNA. You have shared your hopes and dreams for the future of the university, and we hope to incorporate many of these ideas into our campaign plans. Thanks for taking the time to meet and speak with me!

To enhance outreach to alumni, we have identified “College Campaign Cabinets” for each college and program unit. These leadership teams will assist President Cale and the Advancement Office in the quiet phase of our campaign. They will serve as ambassadors, advisors and advocates for the university as we build the pride and lift our university to new heights of achievement and educational service.

A class of seven new directors was elected to the UNA Foundation Board. These leaders bring a wealth of experience, dedication and influence to our Foundation. They have already made their mark, and I look forward to seeing the fruits of their ongoing stewardship of the UNA legacy and heritage. They join a group of long-serving directors whose distinguished work through the years layers success upon success.

The Foundation Board voted to reset the annual distribution rate for endowed accounts (the lion’s share being endowed scholarships) from 5 percent to 4 percent. The reason for this move was the need to guard against bleeding down endowed accounts that suffered losses during the Great Recession. Although not bound by Alabama State Law to do so,

the Foundation Board took the conservative position that originating values of endowed gifts should not be pushed “underwater” by overly generous annual distributions.

Gifts and pledges to the UNA Foundation totaled over $3.2 million. Gifts to the 1830 Fund totaled over $200,000 from 1,817 donors. Some major gifts of note were:

• An endowed scholarship for Study Abroad international program scholarships by the Thomas Ross family

• The Daniel Harris Memorial Scholarship by his parents, Jim and Sharon Harris

• Endowment of the Caroline Morgan Neisler Scholarship in women’s athletics by an anonymous donor

• The Greater Birmingham Area Club Scholarship reached endowment status

• A gift from Bank Independent to establish the third Edward Fennel Mauldin Memorial Endowed Scholarship

• Dr. Michael Moeller of the Department of Chemistry joined the Isbell Scholars Program

• A gift from Dr. Paul Yokley to enhance the existing Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta) Endowed Scholarship

• The announcement of a planned gift from Kathryn B. Rice that will benefit the Science and Technology Building as well as a named scholarship

• A gift to the Science and Technology Building by Dr. David Sunseri

• A gift from Dr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Thomas for a named chemistry room in the Science and Technology Building

• A gift from CB&S Bank to name the conference room in the Science and Technology Building

• The establishment of the John Paul White Endowed Scholarship for the Entertainment Industry along with an additional pledge from the UNA Alumni Association to name the Science and Technology Building dining area

• A gift from Wise Metals Group to name the Engineering Technology Classroom in the Science and Technology Building

• A gift from Wilburn Killian for the Killian Long-Term Care Endowment as well as a gift toward a new nursing facility

• A gift to establish the Helen Keller Hospital Employee Endowed Scholarship that benefits employees who are pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees

In the past year, the Foundation endowment grew by 7.31 percent from $17,529,895 to $18,811,342. Total Foundation assets increased 8.79 percent from $22,019,483 to $23,954,444.

Two giving programs were established this year – one revived an old favorite and the other created a brand new giving vehicle. In the first instance, I am speaking about the President’s Cabinet. After a short hiatus, and by popular demand, President Cale revived his President’s Cabinet, a group of loyal contributors who give at least $1,000 annually to support the unrestricted needs of the university. It has 71 members who gave just less than $120,000 this past year. The second new gift program is the UNA Gift Bay. UNA Gift Bay is a one-stop online shop where alumni can put their generosity to work on behalf of the college units. I invite you to visit the UNA Gift Bay (www.una.edu/giftbay) and tell us what you think. Let Barbara and me again thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your gracious hospitality. You have made us feel at home at UNA and in the Shoals. As we continue this work, please be reminded that your support of UNA will echo through the years and advance the wonderful teaching and learning that goes on beneath our stately oaks.

All my best wishes, Dan Hendricks

Supporters of UNA now have a quick, easy, user-friendly way to make a direct donation to the academic program closest to their hearts.

In October, the Offi ce of Advancement launched UNA Gift Bay as a new, interactive feature – www.una.edu/giftbay – available around-the-clock on the school’s website. The online service allows donors to designate gifts for any of UNA’s four academic colleges – Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Sciences, and Nursing and Allied Health – as well as Athletics, Library Services, International Affairs and other special programs.

“Gift Bay is a marketplace of generosity where alumni and friends of the University can shop for ways to help our academic programs,” according to Dr. Dan Hendricks, UNA’s vice president for advancement. “The UNA Gift Bay is an affordable way to get involved with UNA. We hope our friends and friends like it.”

Similar to online shopping services such as eBay and Amazon, Gift Bay allows donors to visit web pages outlining both immediate and long-range needs for each academic college or program. For instance, a potential donor who is considering making a donation to the UNA College of Business can click on Gift Bay (www.una.edu/giftbay), then click on the tab for Business and view descriptions of both general and specifi c needs before making their online donation to that program.

“Many of our friends are familiar with our current online annual-giving opportunities through the 1830 Fund,” Hendricks explained. “Gift Bay offers a new option for giving by allowing potential donors to concentrate their giving in a specialized area that focuses on the current needs expressed by our colleges and other academic programs. Choices can range from providing microscopes for a biology lab

and long-range needs for each academic college or program. For instance, a potential donor who is considering making a donation to the UNA College of Business can click on Gift Bay (www.una.edu/giftbay), then click on the tab for Business and view descriptions

or computer software for a business course to supporting a student in one of our Study Abroad experiences or funding research projects or conference travel for one of our faculty members.”

UNA is making a special Gift Bay appeal to alumni, friends, supporters and other potential donors during the holiday season, when contributions to UNA can serve a doubly meaningful “gift” purpose if made in honor of a friend, relative or other loved one.

“Giving someone the chance to participate in a charitable donation is a gift you can both feel good about, and it’s a gift that will never go to waste,” explained Haley Brink, UNA’s director of annual giving. “With the new UNA Gift Bay just a click away, it’s now easier than ever to make a donation on someone else’s behalf and give them the gift that truly gives back.”

This holiday season, we ask that you consider making a gift of $500, $250 or $100, or give as generously as possible, at www.una.edu/giftbay.

UNA ONE ONE

ONE . . . ONE

The UNA Office of Alumni Relations and the UNA Alumni Association are so excited to play a role in helping with the recruitment of students to UNA. We are issuing a challenge to all of our alumni: “Each one … Reach one.”

UNA alumni are always interested in helping the university and inquiring how they can help. Now you can take a personal interest in potential students from your geographical location and your sphere of influence. We need your help to encourage current high school sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students to give UNA a look. The UNA Office of Admissions website has an information component so that you can suggest names and information that might help you engage additional students and help us reach out to them.

This campaign for recruiting more and more students is a great way for you (alumni and friends) to give back to the university. Alumni are our greatest assets and our largest troops-on-the-ground. If each one of you could reach one or more students, our student population would grow, the value of your degree would escalate and UNA “Lion Pride” would spread even further.

After a very successful football Saturday in November, UNA’s associate director of

admissions, Julie Yates Taylor, said, “‘On behalf of the Office of Admissions, thank you all for your contributions to Preview Day 2013. As with years past, the event was a huge success due to the efforts of the UNA family. We had over 1,500 prospective students sign in and over 1,000 additional guests attend the event. We are so thrilled that these prospective students and their family members chose to spend their Saturday with us. Effective and successful recruiting requires a team effort by the entire university community. I am grateful to have all of you on our team!”

If you are ready, willing and able to accept this challenge, visit the UNA Admissions website (una.edu/admissions) to glean information about how you can help become more active in the recruitment process through the new program, “Each One … Reach One.” Additional ideas that have been suggested for involving alumni in recruitment include participation in area college fairs and the possibility of hosting small, in-home gatherings for potential students.

We are ready to help. Let’s join the “Lion Pride” team.

IsBeLL sCHOLars

Dr. Raymond Isbell, a native of Colbert County and a 1953 graduate of UNA, joined the faculty as an associate professor of chemistry in 1965. In 1973, he was named head of the department of chemistry and served in that capacity until he retired in 1997. He then donated a year of service to his department to establish a scholarship at the University. Many employees inspired by Dr. Isbell’s generous act have since volunteered to remain in their job after retirement to establish additional educational endowments.

THE CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITYStrengthen Your Future and Ours

HOW A GIFT ANNUITY WORKSA gift annuity is a simple contractual agreement between you and a charity in which you give money or assets in exchange for the organization’s promise to provide you, the annuitant, with fi xed payments each year for your lifetime.

WHAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISHBy establishing a charitable gift annuity, you can accomplish two things: 1. You receive fi xed payments for yourself or yourself and another individual 2. After your lifetime, the remaining amount supports your chosen charity.

SAVINGS YOU CAN EXPECT TO ACHIEVEYour donation is divided into two parts: (1) the amount of the donation attributable to the gift portion and (2) the amount of the donation attributable to your annuity payments.

A portion of each payment you receive is considered a nontaxable return of your contribution, from the start of your payments until you reach your estimated life expectancy. This tax-free amount further increases your after-tax dollars available for whatever you choose, such as spending or investing.

You are entitled to a charitable income-tax deduction for the gift portion of your contribution – usually between 30 and 50 percent of the value of the gift, assuming you itemize your deductions.

In addition to the payments and the deduction you receive, a gift annuity funded with appreciated property has these advantages:

1. The capital gain allocated to the gift portion completely avoids the capital-gains tax. 2. In most cases, the portion of the taxable capital gain can be spread over your life expectancy.

WHY CHOOSE A CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY?RECEIVE fi xed payments for your lifetime, or supply loved ones with payments for life.

ENJOY a charitable income-tax deduction.OBTAIN tax-favored payments you can never outlive.

SUPPORT a cause you care about.AVOID a portion of the capital-gains tax when you fund your gift annuity with appreciated property.
