PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Dear Fellow SSSS Members

The society is now 30 years old. Over the years, the council have

worked with fellow members and other related agencies to develop

programmes that keep us abreast with the markets.

In the area of continuous education activities, Structural Steel Engineers

(StEr) course had been restructured for potential structural steel

engineers to equip them with Eurocode design standards 3 & 4. This is to prepare them well

with the knowledge of structural Eurocode design standards, as Building & Construction

Authority (BCA) had made structural Eurocdes to be the only prescribed design standards

from 1st April 2015. The Structural Steel Supervisors (StS) course is also popular with the

industry players, who sent their employees to attend this course to upgrade their knowledge

and skill in structural steel construction.

Many of our corporate members had utilised the various productivity incentive schemes from

the various government agencies to make use of these funds to upgrade their working

processes and equipment. I guessed the upgrading of their facilities may have assisted our

steel fabricators to upgrade to S1 and S2 in the societys Steel Fabricators Accreditation

Scheme. To date, we have 19-S1, 21-S2, 30-S3 and 18-S4 in our register.

The society will need the continuous supports of our fellow members, so that we can work

together for the betterment of our industry. I would like to thank all the members who had

contributed to the growth of our society and also to my council members and the Secretariat

who spent many of their precious hours to keep the societys activities running well.

ANNUAL LECTURE AND DINNER

SSSS 29th Annual Lecture and Dinner was

held at Raffles City Convention Centre on 25th

July 2013. The Annual Lecture was presented

by Mr. Nonda Katsalidis, the Founding Director

of United Building Limited and Fender

Katsalidis Architects, on Volumetric

Construction Methodologies.

The dinner was attended by 400 guests and members.

CONTINUAL EDUCATION

SHORT COURSES, INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUMS &

PUBLIC SEMINARS

SSSS organized a 1 day workshop on Second-Order Analysis for Design of Steel

Structures to Eurocode-3 and Structural Design of Glass Structures on 10 October 2013 at

Resort World Sentosa Convention Centre, Singapore.

STRUCTURED EXAMINATION COURSES

Structural Steel Supervisor Course (StS)

The StS Course, jointly organised by BCA Academy and SSSS, has conducted 24 batches

of classes. We currently have 460 registered Structural Steel Supervisors with the SSSS.

Structural Steel Engineer Course (StEr)

The StEr is jointly organised by BCA Academy and SSSS, to prepare and update practicing

engineers in the design and construction of steel structures. The course content had been

newly updated since 2011 to prepare the industry for migration of BS 5950 to the Eurocode

(EC3 & EC4), and complements the existing Certification Course for Structured Steel

Supervisors (StS). We have since completed 11 batches of course and have 77 registered

Steel Engineers.

Renewal of StS and StEr

StS and StEr graduands are subjected every 2 years (StS) and 1 year (StEr) with SSSS.

Their names are listed on the SSSS website and will be removed once their registration

lapse.

GOLF TOURNAMENTS

SSSS-BCA Scholarship Fund Raising Golf

Tournament 2013 and SSSS Continental Steel

Challenge Trophy 2013 held at Sentosa Golf

Club, Tanjong Course on 7 June 2013.

SSSS organised the SSSS 5th Siew Gang Golf,

16 January 2014 at Raffles Country Club (Palm

Course).

EVENING LECTURES AND SITE VISITS

SSSS continues to organize regular evening talks for members to update and network at the

lowest possible fees.

10th April 2013: SSSS Evening Lecture on Laser

Fusion Technology for Stainless Steel, sponsored by

Stainless Steel Asia, held at Singapore Polytechnic.

The speaker was Mr. Michael Stumm from

MONTANSTAHL AG. The Evening Lecture was well

attended by 59 members and 21 non-members.

9th July 2013: SSSS organized an Evening Lecture on New Super JUMBOS and New High

Performance Steel Grade for Singapore at Singapore Polytechnic, sponsored by

ArcelorMittal. The speaker was Mr. Jean-Claude (JC) Gerardy from ArcelorMittal. The

Evening Lecture was well attended by 54 members

and 17 non-members.

21ST September 2013: SSSS organized a site visit to

the Former Yen Sen Building at Orchard Road. A total

of 27 participants attended this site visit.

16th November 2013: SSSS organized a site visit to

Singapore Sports Hub. A total of 33 participants

accompanied this site visit.

27th November 2013: SSSS Evening Lecture on

Mitigating Challenges of Super-Steel Structure with

Proven Intelligent Automated Machines held at

Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology,

sponsored by ABB Singapore. The speakers were

Mr. Jelle Janssen from Kranendonk in The

Netherlands, Dr. Ng Teck Chew from MPTC and Dr.

Liu Tong from Precision Measurement Team. The

Evening Lecture was well attended by 44 members and 5 non-members.

CORPORATE MEMBERS ACTIVITIES

SSSS organized the Corporate Members Night on 4th December 2013 at Hooters, Clarke

Quay. It was well attended by 33 corporate members with a total of 94 guests. Talks on

Assistance Schemes for SMEs by SPRING Singapore and Technologies and Tools for

Technology Improvement by Mr Wong Ming Mao, MPTC, SIMtech, were conducted.

On 3rd April 2014, SSSS organized the Corporate Members Night at Intercontinental Hotel

Singapore. It was well attended by 37 corporate members with a total of 73 guests.

Presentations by Building & Construction Authority (BCA) and Infocomm Development

Authority (IDA), AVEVA Pte Ltd on Engineering and Design for Lean Construction, Graitec

Pte Ltd on Autodesk Advance Steels Productivity and Return on Investment and Tekla

Corporation on BIM in Fabrication, were conducted.

PACIFIC STRUCTURAL STEEL CONFERENCE (PSSC)

The Pacific Structural Steel Conference (PSSC 2013) was held on 8 to 11 October 2013 at

Resorts World Sentosa. A total of 224 international and local delegates attended the

conference.

EUROCODE 3 & 4

Singapore National Annexes for the suite of Singapore Eurocodes for steel and steel

composite building design were done. BCA informed that from 1 Apr 2013 and for a

transition period of two years, BCA would accept design submission to BS and EN. From 1

Apr 2015, BCA would accept design submission to EN and not BS.

FACTORY PRODUCTION CERTIFICATES

SSSS has posted 25 FPCs on its website as a platform to serve the industry. The objective

is to help the industry lessen hassles of individually seeking evidence of FPC. This will make

it easier to use steel complying with BCA guide on the guide on the use of alternative

materials to BS5950.
