Pre-T00035 Insightful Portrayal of Immigrant’s Family and Identity from Jhumpa Lahiri’s Novel the Namesake

Abstract: This paper aims to focus on the insightful portrayal of an immigrant family and their

surviving with dual identity in Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel of The Namesake. Up to the beginning of

1990th, there have been many Asian American writers telling us the immigrant life in U.S., but with

very few Indian-American writers came to stage. It is not until the new star, Jhumpu Lahiri, with her

debut book, The Interpreter of Maladies (1999), won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize that people get to know

this talented young female writer. Especially when her first novel The Namesake was published in

2003 and put on screen in 2006, her fame was greatly spread out not only domestically but also

internationally.

Why this novel gets so popular and well recognized? What is the difference between this novel and

many others? What is the message parents want to convey to their children behind the name? This

paper is going to analyze and suggest the following three features. Comparing with other Asian

American writers: 1) Lahiri delivers in a different way a strong message about family and identity in

her novel, The Namesake. It tells the thoughtful, well-told story of a Bengali family's journey

through life in New York after emigrating from India, even though it also expounds on a familiar

theme: traditional immigrant parents struggling with a new culture and perplexed by their

Westernized offspring, which is a universal phenomenon in the U.S. This book gets the highest

praise for its grace, acuity, and compassion in detailing lives transported from India to America. 2)

The Namesake treats the parents' conventions and perspective as a matter of fact, not as a source of

conflict or an issue in need of examination. Along with the striking developments, this approach sets

The Namesake apart from other stories with a similar premise.

Monetary Policy Impacts on the Balance Sheets of Global Banks and Large and Small Chinese

Banks

Abstract: The 2007-2008 global financial crisis rippled through the global financial system. In

response, the monetary authorities in the impacted economies took unprecedented measures to

prevent financial instability and economic depression, and then tightened monetary policy amid

strong capital inflows and overheating concerns. The empirical results show that banks’ behavior

varies between global and large and small Chinese banks, including at the time of the crisis. First,

Chinese banks are relatively unscathed, mainly due to their limited exposure to 2007-2008 financial

crisis, abundant savings, and expansionary fiscal and credit policies. Second, small Chinese banks

have been impacted little by the domestic and global factors (except for a positive correlation

between GDP growth and the growth of loans and assets). Third, knowing the reasons behind the

different impacts on large and small banks would help strengthen their market-oriented behavior and

would enhance monetary policy effectiveness. The different responses to interest rates and exchange

rates of both large and small Chinese banks from those in global banks further reinforce the

necessity to speed up market-oriented reforms, including further commercialization of banks and

liberalization of interest rates and exchange rates.

Foreign Direct Investment Inflows and Economic Growth in Saudi Arabia: A Co-Integration

Analysis

Abstract: This paper aimed to conduct a co-integration analysis of foreign direct investment (FDI)

inflows and economic growth in Saudi Arabia from 1980 to 2010. The study used the

Johansen-Juselius (1990) technique for co-integration and found that FDI has a positive and

insignificant role in economic growth in the country over the long term. Variable government

expenditure was found to affect economic growth both positively and significantly in the long term.

In contrast, estimates of the ECM techniques demonstrate that domestic capital and the labor force

have a positive and significant influence on economic growth in the short term. Based on the Wald

test statistics with zero restrictions, the Granger causality test implies that domestic capital and

government expenditure drive Granger output in the economy. This result is also consistent with the

IRFs of a one-standard shock in the dependent variable over a time horizon of 10 years.

The year 1952 was an eyewitness of a big hotel origin: The AvenidaPalace Hotel. This symbolic establishment was

built where the mythical Tea Saloon and restaurant Casa Libre was situated. Numerous public, cultural and social life

authorities attended tis inauguration; among the others, an outstanding authority was Bishop Moreno, who was the

person in change of the inauguration.

Its noble and charming style has turn it into the most chosen option, throughout the years, by a lot of celebrities that
