Would you partner with education to promote the good in this community and encourage more events that boost the reputation of all that is good?  

Stockton gets a bad rap in the media and among members of the community. It’s time that this city and county boast about the amazing things occurring

here and the products we produce that are successful and bring respect to what we do well.

We realize that you are often bombarded with requests for support and, as the economic times have hit many businesses, in education, it is the career

programs that suffer most. Unfortunately, it is also those career programs that benefit a community’s economy and its ability to rebound and grow from

economic hardship. In education, these are also the programs that are often the most misunderstood.

The Fashion Program boasts one of San Joaquin Delta College’s most successful programs, but also one of its least funded. Therefore, it has been left to the

students to raise funds for their own academic activities, including field trips, special events, fashion shows and even the program’s marketing and outreach.

And, it is up to those who care about the program to reach out for assistance to keep it thriving on the Delta College campus! Often those are the students

in those programs.

We are in the process of gathering supporters and sponsors for our upcoming event, the annual Designer Collections Show, which is set for May 10, 2013 in

Warren Atherton Auditorium. In its sixth year, we are anticipating a paying audience of over 1200. Each year our shows get better and better and we believe

would rival any in New York or Los Angeles and, that of Sacramento Fashion. This year, the show promises to be one of the largest we’ve ever done and the

most intricate and spectacular than we’ve ever attempted. We are building a thirty-foot runway into the theater, over the tops of the chairs!

The show is a collaboration between two classes in the Fashion Program: the Event Production class and the Collection Design class. Every aspect of the

show is designed and produced by students in these two classes. Events students recruit the funding through sponsorships and raffle donations to raise

money to pay for the show; swag bag gifts and donations, wine and food for our VIP reception for supporters of the program, industry connections, local

dignitaries and the press; The 90+ models, photographers, and videographers who donate their time to the event; and all of the resources and support

required to produce the show. The entire show is created by the Events students, from the music and choreography to the marketing and advertising, all to

the standards of the industry.

They also develop a marketing plan, creating and distributing a professional media kit, along with advertising pieces used in the press, and online and social

media campaign, create a public relations campaign in the community and high schools and design and develop all aspects of the marketing of the show.

None of these marketing or production costs are supported by the college.

Collections students design the garments from scratch, drafting all of their original patterns, purchasing all of their fabrics, trims and notions (which range in

personal cost from $300 to $1000), and spend hours constructing their garments and fitting their volunteer models.

Many of the students from these classes have gone on to do great things: Designers have shown in fashion weeks and in other events within the industry and

are respected for the quality of their work; Events students have worked with a variety of local and regional event producers and in marketing and

advertising in the fashion industry; our models (many of whom come from the program, our classes, campus and our community) have also gone on to

achieve success in the modeling industry.

Wherever we go and with whomever we speak about this program, we realize the immense amount of respect it has in the community and the fashion

industry. It is obvious that the fashion students who work locally and internationally and are very successful because of the education they receive in the

fashion program.

“A STORY OF FASHION . . . Runway to Reality.” (Stockton, April 19, 2013) One of the most anticipated fashion events of the year, A STORY OF FASHION is in its sixth year showcasing impressive fashion design talent! And, on May 10th, FASHION will make its presence known in Stockton!

Six years ago, A Story of Fashion showed to a sold out crowd of 800 at the Haggin Museum in an elegant event, with a wine and food reception for the guests who attended. In 2010, the event attracted over 1,000 people to Delta College’s brick courtyard with an open-air show and thirteen designers, an exhibit of fashion and design and a reception from the Culinary Program. For the past two years, it was held in two different vacant spaces in Lincoln Center, both elegant, but each with its own atmosphere and ambiance, and both with a wine and food reception for its VIP guests. The 2011 show had a very industrial vibe in a concrete space with three runways. For 2012 the show, intimate and elegant was the vibe in a smaller venue, with a VIP reception enjoyed by exclusive ticket holders. According to Uduak Oduok,

professional model/attorney/media CEO (who has also assisted in the model workshops held to teach the volunteer models to walk and pose), “The ambience was that of class and sophistication reminiscent of what you would find among the fashion savvy in San Francisco, LA or New York.” This year, it comes back to the college to the hidden gem that is Warren Atherton Theater (home to the Stockton Symphony) for a larger-than-life, high-energy spectacle. This venue boasts a Broadway-size stage and over 1,400 seats upholstered red velvet, an incredible 60’ screen, visible from all areas of the theater, on which a live feed will be projecting what’s on a runway.

The live feed and the runway, which will jet 30’ into the theater, will give the audience an up-close view of the collections. Over 90 models who volunteer their time to the show, will be professionally styled by local hair and makeup artists, and will be walking the runway. A STORY OF FASHION showcases the design talent of San Joaquin Delta College’s Fashion Program’s students. This year, 10 emerging designers will showcase their collections, as will 3 alumni students returning to show collections of their own. This years the show is packed with brilliant design talent, cutting-edge fashion, and spectacle and drama that will be unlike any show Stockton has ever seen. Each year this show has proven to be a giant success and this year will be no exception.

New to the show this year, and for the first time, a segment will be dedicated to a Fashion Goes Red Dress Design Challenge, in association with the American Heart Association. This challenge is a fashion student competition that was fostered by the program's unique partnership with the American Heart Association. The was a challenge to students to be inspired by survivors and the families of survivors to design a red dress that will serve to promote heart disease awareness among young women. The red dresses will be modeled by survivors of heart disease or women who have been affected by heart disease. A STORY OF FASHION is a collaboration from two-capstone fashion courses, Collection Design and Event Production, and is produced entirely by the students in these classes. Collection Design is led by Natalie Minori Sconce, a former Delta College fashion student who was in the first Collection Design class. Natalie graduated from Delta’s Fashion program and went and has on to participate in San Francisco Fashion Week and Sacramento Fashion Week. In 2011, she showed her twelve-look collection at Sacramento Fashion Week with great success, which was followed by a eight-page editorial spread in Florum Fashion Magazine and subsequent other magazines. Natalie now shares her knowledge of fashion and the fashion industry with up and coming designers. Each of the students in the Collection Design class develops a collection based on an inspiration, then begins a multi-step process which leads to the completion of a cohesive collection. This process involves the creation of inspiration boards, flats (detailed drawings of each garment) and sketches of each look to utilize as references throughout the design process. For each garment, the students create original patterns and construct fit the garments to specific models. All of this is done within a 12-week time frame. The Fashion Event Production class, led by Leslie Asfour, the Fashion Program Coordinator, is responsible for the production of the show. Asfour developed the Collection Design and Fashion Event Production classes six years ago to give the fashion students a capstone experience and provide them with skills that are only offered here and would lead to successful industry jobs. With an industry so large, Asfour believes that the students need to leave the program with high-caliber experiences that will set them apart from students in other fashion programs at other schools. In the same 12-week time frame that the Collection Design class works, the Event Production class is charged with the show production. The planning process begins right away, recruiting models, hair and makeup stylists; choosing a venue space; deciding on staging and lighting equipment; coordinating music and choreography; developing and designing marketing and advertising material;, and secure sponsorships and donations for the show. With no funding support from the college, the students must fund support in the local community, fashion industry and kind private donations. One of the more dynamic aspects for the Event Production class is the development of media and sponsor kits, something not taught in most fashion programs and something that the students will

incorporate in their professional portfolios. The media kits have garnered media support from many sources, from TV to magazines to newspapers and radio. The Event class participates in a number of other events to gain experience in the arena of fashion event production. Each year, the class is the exclusive assistance to A Soolip Wedding in San Francisco. This luxury wedding fair is one of the most exclusive shows for the select bride. This year, the class assisted Lincoln Center with its Bridal Fair and worked on another show Lincoln Center produced at Brookside Country Club. They participate in philanthropic events, as well, including the March of Dimes March for Babies, raising funds for lifesaving research to insure health for every baby. For the students in both classes, the experience is transformative. They gain a rare understanding of the process needed to plan a professional, up-scale event presented to the public and the demands of presenting it to the standards of the industry. The show consistently attracts fashion industry professionals, community leaders, business owners and professionals, students and their parents and a wide-range of fashion enthusiasts creating a dynamic atmosphere. “Unless someone told you, you would think a team of PR professionals were hired to produce the fashion event. There was so much creativity in the room, I kept saying to myself, all of these in Stockton?,” stated Oduok about the 2011 show. SHOW DATE/TIME: Friday, May 10, 2013 at 8:00 pm. A STORY OF FASHION 2013 Meet the Designers

THUYTIEN NGUYEN High School Attended: Bear Creek High School Why She Came to the Fashion Program: While working in retail, she was promoted from a sales clerk to Manager/Buyer and this is when she fell in love with the fashion industry. Thuytien decided to enter the San Joaquin Delta College Fashion Program to get a better understanding of the merchandising business and took an interest in design. Inspirations: Thuytien is inspired by many designers and forms of design. She looks to many various industry leaders for inspiration and is always experimenting with different materials, mediums and projects. A major inspirational experience happened when she went to New York with instructor

Leslie Asfour and had the opportunity to meet with industry professionals. While there, she attended ThreeAsfour’s fashion show during fashion week and met Scott Schumann, the Sartorialist, which was the highlight. Since joining the fashion program, she has seen the many opportunities and career paths that are available to her.. 2013 Collection: Thuytien’s Fall Collection is inspired by the New York City skyline and its cosmopolitan lifestyle Her collection uses several fabrics that she brought back from her trip to NY. The garments are a combination of structured forms, tailoring, and texture. The materials used include leather, navy and silver metallic, burned velvet, feathers and fur, as well as laser cut split leathers. Goals and Dreams: Thuytien holds an Associates of Art in Fashion Design and an Associates of Art in Fashion Merchandising. She hopes to have an opportunity to work under a skilled designer to learn and to grow.

TYLER A. GERSZLER Fashion Education: Tyler started San Joaquin Delta College majoring in Apparel Design in the fashion program immediately after graduating from Lodi High School high school in 2011. Fashion Interest: Tyler became interested in fashion because “There are so many perceptions of beauty” and he feels that he can portray his own version of that beauty through the garments he creates. Inspiration and Design: Tyler’s inspiration for his collection is “Forest Romance.” The structure, crisp edges, and movement of his garments are his interpretation of natural elements such as the rocks, trees, and leaves that are seen in the forest. Color is used representatively in his collection where green, black and red represent the darker side of the forest while white and gray add a softer and more romantic feeling.

MONICA SAILORS Her beginning: Monica has had a love for fashion for most of her life. She learned to sew while in elementary school and has been making and designing clothing ever since. Monica is ready to take this love from hobby status and make it into a career. Studying part time at Delta College for the past two years, she has been able to fill in any gaps that there may have been in her self-taught skills. Why Fashion? Monica feels that fashion is creative expression, both for the designer and the wearer. Just like art, different people have different styles that appeal to them, which is why the industry is so diverse.

Career and Goals: Monica particularly loves special occasion fashions, as they give one the opportunity to step out of their everyday life and live a fantasy for a time. Monica hopes to follow in the footsteps of Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang, becoming someone that people turn to with confidence for their bridal, formal and red carpet looks. 2013 Collection: Monica's current collection has its roots in film noir. She was inspired by the contrasts in these dramas, the grit versus the glamour, black and white, leather and chiffon, edgy and elegant. Stepping a little out of her own comfort zone, she has worked these elements into a collection that puts a twist on the conventional and will appeal to the young rebel in all of us.

MAGDALENA ELIZABETH TOMA Educational Path: Magdalena has completed an AA in Apparel Design and she will continue her studies towards a Bachelor’s degree. In high school, Magdalena wasn’t sure what she wanted to study in college. One of the counselors of her high school suggested taking a sewing class. From then on, she loved sewing. She knew then that she wanted to design as she finds fashion unique, and she believes designers express their feelings and creativity in clothes which is something she admires.

Future Goals: To work for an important fashion company and start her own business in apparel design. Design inspiration: Magdalena designed her Spring/ Summer collection specifically with young women of college age in mind. The collection is titled “Jardin Escape” which means garden escape. She was inspired by gardens in France, Jardin a la Francaise. The gardens are very symmetrical and have multitudes of flowers in endless colors. These gardens remind her of escape because the bushes are shaped into mazes. Magdalena is influenced by the designer Giorgio Armani. “At the start of the class, I wasn’t sure I would be able to handle the challenge of designing and entire collection. But, as I worked through my own insecurities, I found the process to be transformative and I’m glad I stuck it out. I know now that

I would have regretted not taking the class and participating in this show.” ~Magdalena Toma

KATHY VANG Her beginning: Kathy graduated from McNair High School where she took fashion courses and was inspired to continue. She came to Delta in the Fall of 2010, initially to earn a degree in Apparel Design, which would help her work towards a career as a fashion designer. Once she was in the program and had experienced the many great opportunities that the fashion program had to offer, she decided to broaden her study emphasis to include a second major of Fashion Merchandising. Kathy idols and Inspirations: The originality of the designs of Alexander McQueen and detailed glamour of Naeem Khan. She loves the creativity, hard work, and adventures that are part of the fashion industry. Fall/Winter 2013 Collection: Her current collection is inspired by a trail of stars in the night sky. The patterns are incorporated into her looks in the use of twin needle embellishments and her chosen fabrics. She incorporates many fabrics including velvet, fur, cotton, and sequined lace, to keep her signature of femininity. The color palette she chose to use consists of black - in representation of the night sky - with touches of gray and a shimmery teal. “In my collection this year, I will be showing an edgier side of my designs, in comparison to last year’s bold and colorful,

feminine style.” ~Kathy Vang

SUSAN RODRIGUEZ Inspirations: Susan enjoys every opportunity that allows her to share her creative way of viewing the unconventional beauty of the immediate surroundings. She has been extremely fortunate to be able to take numerous art and fashion courses at Delta, which have inspired her current collection. Inspirations for her collection are fusions of art and fashion in a non-conventional style, similar to that of the Dada movement (1916-1920, which deliberately created art to seem absurd. The movement was influenced by the notion and idea that art often happens just by chance. Susan is inspired by the creative style of the movements’ most known artist, Marcel Duchamp, who used undisguised,

but often modified, objects or products which are not normally considered art, due to their non-art function in his pieces. 2013 Collection: Susan has constructed aesthetically-pleasing garments with deeper meaning that challenge the audience to think past the established ideas of fine fabrics and fashion. “It is exciting that Delta College offers creative individuals such as myself, a platform to share our designs. After all, what

good is a design if no one sees it? With so much talent in this year’s class, this is truly a must see show.” ~Susan Rodriguez

ALAN CHU Interests: Alan is very interested in watching anime, listening to Jpop, and reading manga. Before he knew about the fashion design program at San Joaquin Delta College, he was studying Art. In the summer of 2006, he took an interest in fashion design when he attended his first anime convention in Anaheim. There he saw many attendees wearing amazing styles of fashion such as, Lolita, Goth, and Visual Kei. It made him want to study the art of fashion design. Alan is interested in fashion design, because he likes to illustrate various designs and turn them in to everyday clothing. His design idol is Junya Tashiro. Inspiration for his collection: Is Visual Kei; which is a style that looks like a combination of glam rock and punk rock. He finds this style inspiring because he adores its creativity and innovative expressions.

ALYSSA GIBSON WHY FASHION?: Alyssa’s love of fashion started young. She would spend hours watching her grandmother sew costumes and make repairs for the family, learning a few hand stitches and sewing basics. In fourth grade, Alyssa created her first dress; a pale pink floral, strapless, with button closures, a lace hem, and fit it to a Barbie doll. In the same year, Alyssa and a younger cousin spent time sketching out designs and pretending that they owned a store in their grandparent’s kitchen. Fashion Education: After graduating from A.A. Stagg High School in 2010, Alyssa decided to attend Delta’s Fashion Program to earn her A.A. in Apparel Design and A.S. in Fashion Merchandising. Inspiration: For this, her first collection, her inspiration is the 1950s pin up girls and greasers. “After experiencing the production side of a fashion show last year, I’m super eager to be on the design side this year.”

Fashion Education: Fashion has always been a big part of Kyles life. Graduating from Ripon High School, he came to Delta to study fashion. He knew he wanted to be a fashion designer ever since he was a young boy and Delta has helped him achieve his goals. He started Delta’s Fashion Program in the fall of 2010. He is currently working on two degrees from Delta College in Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising. Kyle showed his first collection last year at Lincoln Center and again at two shows in Sacramento. 2013 Collection: His collection this year is greatly inspired by the structure of a sailboat with a romantic feel that is grounded in the old myths of Naval widows staring out at the ocean hoping to find their long lost loves. The colors he selected to use are coral, navy blue, grey, and champagne. They represent an overcast ocean sunset. Design Idols and Inspirations: Belgian designer Dries Van Noten inspires Kyle through his designs in his use of mixing of patterns and of femininity with masculinity. Kyle hopes to offer his collection for sale at local boutiques and appreciates the opportunity provided by the fashion show to share his designs with the public.

second time after going through this process once before.” ~Kyle Gajeton

NATASHA HANSEN Fashion Dreams: Natasha started pursuing her dream profession, to work in the fashion industry, right out of high school. At the age of eighteen Natasha placed first in the Art Institute of San Francisco’s Original Apparel Design and Finished Garment Contest, finishing in the top twenty in the national competition. She came to Delta to complete her degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising and is now in her final semester. Working in the Industry: She has had several internships for noted designers in the San Francisco and Sacramento areas. She has also worked on the production and marketing team of several runway and trunk show events. Natasha is now excited to be a part of the R. Douglas Custom Clothier team in Sacramento as the Production Coordinator. Design Inspiration: The inspiration for this collection comes from her design idols Alice and Olivia, Victoria Beckham, Tom Ford and J Brand. Natasha’s Collection: The collection is titled Beautiful Creatures and references the mysterious creatures of the sea. The collection communicates a sense of sophistication with an edge by utilizing a combination of playful textures including leather, suede, velvet and chiffon.

Support Education, Culture & Creativity

 The Collection Design Show is in its 6th year. We keep it fresh and exciting by

moving locations, creating a different vibe with each environment and using

local talent and discovering new talent. Our shows have attracted as large

an audience as 1000 people in an outdoor showcase under the stars, to an

intimate and exclusive 200-person event, with wine and appetizers and swag

bags that rivaled the best NY show,

The show features the amazing design talent of the students in the Collection

Design class and the organizational and marketing skills of the students in the

Fashion Event class. The show is produced entirely by students with the

direction and guidance of Leslie Asfour, who has spent the last twenty years

developing and building the program and this event. It is a synthesis of

designers, models, videographers, photographers, bloggers, and student

who volunteer their time and energy to make the show exciting, relevant,

high-quality and one that is highly anticipated each year.

The Collection Design students spend 12 weeks designing and producing

their collection of at least 6 looks, constructing all of the garments from

scratch and fitting them to their models. The Event Production class works

during those same weeks, recruiting models and holding workshops and

rehearsals for the models, designing, producing and distributing all of the

marketing for the show and coordinating every aspect from start to finish.

They are also responsible for securing show sponsors to help offset the cost,

as the college does not provide for this event or any in the department. We

do, however, have an amazingly supportive community and industry and

we’d love to welcome you as a part of that community we call “Friends of

Fashion.”

Support Education, Culture & Creativity

 

Included this year is the Red Dress Design Challenge where students have been

challenged to design a red dress in honor of the American Heart Association’s Go Red

for Women campaign. To help raise awareness for heart disease, students will be

designing red dresses with survivors of heart disease as their “muses.” The dresses will be

integrated into the fashion show in its own segment dedicated to honor the hard work

of the volunteers of the American Heart Association.

COLLECTION DESIGN FASHION SHOW

Delta College features Eleven Student Design Collections and the entrants in

the Red Dress Design Competition for the American Heart Association Go Red

Campaign, with over 90 models, hair and makeup stylists, photographers,

videographers and event producers.

Delta College is a by-invitation VIP reception featuring wine from sponsors,

appetizers from the Culinary Arts Program and deserts from the Baking and

Pastry Program

VENUE: ATHERTON AUDITORIUM

The theater at Delta College holds nearly 1400 people. We anticipate at least

1000 attendees for this particular show. The theater has one of the largest

stages in California – it is Broadway show size. It also boasts a giant screen, 40’

tall that will be used to view the show up close with a live feed, as well as the

preshow and post show advertisements from our supporters.

AUDIENCE

The show attracts fashion industry professionals, community leaders, business

owners and professionals, students and their parents and a wide-range of

fashion enthusiasts who are highly motivated purchasers of lifestyle and

fashionable consumer goods and services.

OTHERS INVOLVED

The show is a collaboration between the students in the classes, as well as local

business owners and professionals, from hair and makeup stylists,

photographers, videographers, wine brands, and the Culinary Arts Program at

Delta.

The   2011 show was also held in Lincoln Center, but in a very different space- the former Sundance Sports location. The Sundance Sports space provided an industrial feeling with a very contemporary urban design. It was the perfect location for the show.

The 2011event was a challenge as there was no Collection Design Class. So, the Event Production class opened the opportunity up to all fashion students to submit individual garments, as well as mini-collections of 3 pieces. They also solicited alumni designers in order to complete the show.

The response was overwhelming. There were many garment submissions and the students solicited a panel of industry judges to evaluate which garments should be shown based on criteria of design, quality of construction, fit and several other characteristics. The class edited the submissions to mostly cocktail dresses and mini-  collections, mostly from the Flat Pattern II class and the four collections from the alumni designers.

The show has moved locations every year and has been held at the Haggin Museum and the brick courtyard on campus.

A STORY

FASHIONIf you didn’t know any better, you would think you were attending an exclusive fashion show at a New York designer’s showroom! Eleven up-and-coming designers showcased their design talent on over 60 models in a completely transformed vacant retail space in Stockton’s upscaleLincoln Center on Friday, May 11, 2012. Guests were swept up in an evening of fashion-infused elegance in an sophisticated and contemporaryevent.

Entering the venue, the tone was set with individual photo shoots on the red carpet. The focal point of the dimly-lit room was a u-shapedbrushed steel runway, lined with silver Chivari chairs which sparked in the evening setting. Each chair was meticulously set with an elegant swagbag, a program for the evening and a place card with the name of the guest. The intimate event opened with a reception, boasting of horsd’oeuvres, wine, champagne and delectable desserts.

The show, appropriately titled “A Story of Fashion,” in its fifth year of celebrating local creative talent, did not disappoint! The event quickly soldout of tickets within two weeks of announcement. Ten emerging student designers showcased their creative work on the runway on over 90models who were professionally styled by prestigious local salons.

OUR MODELS:

The Fashion Program prides itself on the model talent it discovers and grooms. Every model in the show volunteers their time to be a part of something great! They are obligated to hours of rehearsals and workshops, along with the hours of the show.

Many come right from our fashion classes and from the quad and cafeteria at Delta. The production students sometimes call themselves “model hunters” as they are constantly on the look out for men and women who will fit the designers’ collections and aesthetics and who have the personality to be a part of the show.

MODEL WORKSHOPS

The training begins with a model workshop. Past workshops have been led by professional model/attorney Uduak Oduok and by professional models Ketty Avila, Courtney Althoff, Megan Bowles and Danielle Porter. The models learn how to walk and pose professionally, as well as in the style of the major shows in New York, LA and San Francisco. We are fortunate to recreate professional style in Stockton and bring big-city fashion to the valley!

A FEW SUCCESS STORIES  

 Riley John-Donnell, who came to the Fashion Program after graduating

with a Fine Arts Degree from UOP went on to start the highly successful

Surface Magazine in San Francisco. He also partnered with the founders

of N.I.C.E. Collective (a successful men’s wear brand in San Francisco)

and assisted them with repositioning their brand in the market. Riley has

also been a key advocate to the birth of the PRIDE center in Stockton, assisting in raising

funds so it can become a vital part of the social and ethical community of Stockton. He

was one of a few hundred specially invited guests to the White House by President Obama

to the LGBT Pride Month celebration.

 

Billy Hutchinson is currently the manager of the exclusive San Francisco retail store, Gumps,  

and is a successful entrepreneur with his own line of stationary and porcelain tableware

which is a featured brand on Gump’s web site and in the store. Billy teaches t h e a r t o f

hand lettering and calligraphy at San Francisco Center for the Book. He has been featured

on numerous style blogs and in print magazines such as The Bold Italic, 7 x 7 Magazine,

Couture Chocolate and others.

   

Jennavave Barber has a thriving career as a fashion designer in New York for several highly respected brands

including Calvin Klein, Ellen Tracy and Guess and now freelances in Europe while working as a Technical Design

Instructor and Fashion Design Program Administrator at IED Moda in Milan Italy.

   

Jennifer Rocha moved to New York to work for Banana Republic in product

development, moved on the Tory Burch in Production and Design and is now the

Production Coordinator for Alexander Wang.

   

Nancy De Los Reyes is a visual designer for Papyrus with her BA in Fashion Design from

Academy of Art, she has her own fashion line and was described as one of the top 5

designers to watch in 7 X 7 Magazine.

   

Ceazar Cabreros graduated from FIT in 2012 and is a freelance designer for Bibhu

Mohapatra, after a successful design year with Yigal Azroüel in NYC. His design for

Bibhu in February 2013 was deemed on of the 16th Prettiest Dresses from Fashion Week!

Mark Eric Rodriguez is an Assistant Designer at Monique Lhuillier in New York, while also teaching

design at FIT, where he attended after Delta and UOP. He received FIT’s Film Noir Graduation

Exhibition Critic’s Choice Award in Eveningwear in 2011 and his design was featured throughout

NY retail. He is a nationally-recognized design talent after becoming one of the top 10 chosen

in the Adrianna Papell evening wear design competition.

   Uduak Oduok is an attorney in Sacramento, specializing in entertainment and fashion law. After

at tending Delta, she went on to create a powerful online media group called Ladybrille and then

combined her fashion and legal education to start her own legal firm which aims to protect the

creativity of designers and artists.

   

Naomi Rivera, graduated from CCA in Textile Design, went to NY to work with Donna Karan and ThreeAsfour, and now

owns her own design studio in the East Bay, designing fabrics for a variety of designers.

   

Natalie Minori Sconce graduated from Delta’s Fashion Program and is now back teaching for us. She teaches the

Collection Design Class that is the substance of the end-of-the-year show. As a student she was in the very first

Collection Design Class. She now serves as a mentor to new designers. Natalie has a brilliant career, showing her

own designs in SF Fashion Week and Sac Fashion Week and has had her designs photographed in numerous

publications.

   

Tammy Krause is the Visual Director for Diesel in Northern California, Christina Her is a manager with Express, Jane

Nguyen is the Head Designer with Sincerely Rose, Kayla Taylor is a manager with Macy’s, Jennifer Kelso is

in Product Development with 5.11 Tactical watches, Amy Sieffert is the owner/operator at Something Borrowed,

Amanda Herriford is with the Australian Geographic Shop in Melbourne,

   

Our students are currently employed with a variety of retailers and manufacturers: Royal Robbins, Hugo Boss, Ralph

Lauren, Anthropologie, BCBG, Macy’s, Deisel, Disney, Express, Bath & Body, Victoria’s Secret and more. Others are

freelance designers and visual merchandisers working for a variety of fashion companies and brands!

FASHION INDUSTRY TOURS

The Fashion Program provides students with opportunities to experience the industry beyond the classroom. Through fundraising events, the students provide their own expenses to travel to industry centers. Students experience the industry in San Francisco every semester and New York each year. They have also traveled to Las Vegas for the WWD Magic Apparel Market and the Project Show, as well as Paris and London for a twelve-day whirlwind tour and industry experience.

In San Francisco, the students meet industry professionals and designers from SF-based companies like Gump’s, N.I.C.E Collective, Westonwear, and Jessica McClintock and meet with retail designers and visual merchandisers. New York tours have included Henri Bendel’s, Betsey Johnson, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole, Trend Union, Stylesight, Fashion Footwear markets and more. Students traveling to Paris have met with textile designers from Mahlia Kent and have toured Versailles and the amazing quarters of Marie Antoinette, as well as the Louvre and special fashion exhibitions form Jean Paul Gaulter and Valentino. In London, Rootstein Mannequin’s factory plant tour has been an experience never to forget, and a day in the life of a lingerie designer (originally from Stockton) was the highlight of the trip there!

WE GIVE BACK      

The Fashion Program is intimately connected with the fashion industry in a number of ways and work to bring

those connection to San Joaquin County through a variety of events, one of which is our annual Meet the

Fashion Industry Insiders, bringing influential industry professionals to the college to share their insights with our

students and to network with the community.

   

The program partners with non-profit philanthropic groups like the American Heart Association, the March of

Dimes and the American Cancer Society, raising funds and awareness through a variety of projects: Lee

Denim Day, the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, March of D imes Walk for Babies, and the

Go Red for Women Campaign and Heart Walk for the Heart Association.

   

Partnerships are also extended to local businesses and organizations by offering interns to work and train for

jobs. Students work special events, and shows and provide assistance with marketing and event production.

The Visual Merchandising class designs and installs window displays and creates in-store experiences for the

American Cancer Society’s Discover Shop in Stockton. The themes range from the Pink Ribbon campaign to

Trim-a-home to Chic-to-Chic. Students are charged to create the windows using materials that don’t cost

anything to manufacture, as there is no budget for the class for these projects.

Meet the Fashion Industry Insiders by Sac Fashion Week on October 11, 2011

On Thursday September 29, the third annual “Meet the Fashion Industry Insiders” event took place at San Joaquin Delta College. The free event was open to the public and was an opportunity for students and local fashionistas interested in the fashion industry to personally meet, hear stories and get advice from a panel of fashion insider experts.

On the panel was Michael Palladino, a veteran in the fashion world for more than 30 years who has worked as a celebrity stylist and Client Services Director for Henri Bendels. Also on the panel was Billy Hutchinson, a calligrapher/stationer and a former student at Delta College; Uduak Odouk a model, journalist, and fashion and entertainment attorney, and Renata Campion, also a former model, fashion designer that specializes in hand-made leather boots and artisan knits. The evenings special guest was Caren Templet a local fashion designer based in Sacramento who will be showcasing in New York fashion week February 2012. They all had some informative messages for attendees. Michael Palladino spoke on the importance of being educated using your voice and working hard, that “no one will hand anything to you.” Uduak Oduok’s message was about the importance of protecting your brand. Caren Templet also spoke about branding. What she emphasized was “creating an identity that people will want to follow.” As an attendee of this event who isn’t a designer but still part of the fashion industry. I gained a lot of insight from the speakers. It is a lifestyle, and to be successful in this industry you must live and breathe it. There are many opportunities to get started and I think this presentation motivated all who attended.

‘Meet the Fashion Industry Insiders’ Event Remarkable & Inspirational! FASHIONENTLAW™ | February 20, 2011 – I continue to be highly impressed by Leslie Asfour (Yes she is related to the Three Asfour label. Gabriel Asfour is her cousin), Instructor and Fashion Director for the fashion program at Delta College in Stockton, California. I took fashion courses at Delta to really get more of the intellectual and historical perspective on fashion, independent of my hands on experience. My initial goal was to attend one of the fashion schools in San Francisco until I called Fashion Group International (FGI) , a while back ,asking for schools they recommended. The representative who answered my call asked my location. I told her. She said, why go all the way to San Francisco when you can go to Delta College which has just as a good a fashion program as some of the schools in San Francisco? I took her advice and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. While at Delta, I took some fashion courses from Asfour, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Overtime, I have now watched Asfour transform the fashion program at Delta to an even stronger one. The fashion program under her leadership has enjoyed publicity on local TV and radio stations, the school’s fashion students have visited with some of the world’s renowned fashion industry professionals both in the USA and Paris and, in 2009 the fashion program launched the first ever ‘Meet the Fashion Industry Insiders’ Seminar/Panel. Asfour managed to bring Film Maker Matt Trynauer, who produced “Valentino The Last Emperor,” to the college campus for a screening of his film and Q &A. The list really goes on, on Asfour’s many accomplishments. Now she continues the Meet The Fashion Industry Insiders Panel, this time with a focus on interior design; giving interior design students a rare opportunity to meet some of the industry’s really experienced professionals. I am highly impressed.

Following the Industry Insider events, the fashion students par-ticipated in a styling workshop, run by Michael Palladino andJenny Elizabeth. Students were divided into teams, given onemodel, a scenario, a hair and makeup team, and one hour tostyle the model based on the criteria they were given. Theclothing and accessory wardrobe came from garments thatwere going to be sold at the Nearly New Sale later that month.Check out the results!

ABOUT SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE    

San Joaquin Delta College is the successor of the Stockton Junior College that formed in 1935. The success of the

operation was so notable that the College of the Pacific, now University of the Pacific, abandoned freshmen and

sophomore instruction in 1936, bequeathing all instruction to the junior college.

 The two institutions shared facilities through World War II, when the junior college added another unique, although

temporary, feature: running an aviation school in Nevada.

 Stockton Junior College became Stockton College in 1948, with the total student body at just under 2,000. The

physical change was even more evident, with classes being moved to a 43-acre site just south of College of the

Pacific. The educational pattern also changed, as the Stockton School System restructured into six years of

elementary instruction, four of junior high, and four combining the junior and senior years of high school with the

freshman and sophomore years of college.

 Today the faculty, staff, and students of San Joaquin Delta College envision a community of learners who pursue

and achieve ever-higher educational goals, commit themselves passionately to life-long learning, and fully

appreciate the diverse and dynamic world around them.

Natalie Minori Sconce BY KATY BERRY Fashion’s Rising Star

Stockton native Natalie Minori Sconce may only be 23 years old, but she’s already designed and created

four clothing collections, shown at several fashion shows, and has a day job teaching collection design

at Delta College’s fashion program. With such a fast growing resume, it’s safe to say that this ambitious

young entrepreneur is well on her way to fashion greatness.

Sconce’s interest in fashion began in high school when, while working as a commercial model, she was told to study the clothes she wore and become familiar with the clients she represented. “It sparked my interest in the collections and designers showing at fashion week,” says Sconce. “After that was when I started taking sewing classes.” The first piece of clothing she ever created was a brown, herringbone pencil skirt in tenth grade. “It didn’t fit me but it fit my mom… I still have it.” The budding fashionista went on to study clothing design at Delta College where she crafted collections for the student fashion shows. At 19, she was scouted and invited to featured one of her designs in San Francisco Fashion Week’s “Emerging Stars” show. Her work most recently appeared at Sacramento Fashion Week this past February, debuting her latest collection. Looking at Sconce’s clothing, it’s clear that she has a flare for the bohemian. Silky, translucent fabrics show off the body and airy, loose fitting designs float down the runway; that’s not to say her pieces don’t have a dose of

glamour to balance out their earthy aesthetic. Sconce’s most recent collection was inspired by “structure and movement.” The pieces included textured vests made of thick fur, cinched at the waist with leather belts; short dresses in shimmery, golden mesh or layers of delicate lace; a lightweight sheath gown was updated with a dramatic, gold sequined bodice. In all of Sconce’s designs, marrying the idea of comfortable, everyday clothing with striking, high-fashion details is a must. “I design for a woman who wants that little something on every garment that makes it special and unique. Fashion for me is worth getting dressed up for; it’s not just jeans and a t-shirt. It’s being able to wear a dress every day and still be comfortable, but different and unique,” she says. “I’m designing for the woman who wants to stand out… be comfortable and live her life fashionably.” Sconce says the experience of showing her latest collection at Sacramento Fashion Week was rewarding but undoubtedly nerve-wracking. Preparing for the runway takes months of time-consuming work, incorporating

all aspects of art from sketching designs to actually sewing them, fitting models, choosing a look for hair and makeup, and more. But for the ambitious young designer, this is just the beginning. “In the future I would love to have my own line… that would be my ideal, to have my own line and have it manufactured and in stores,” she says. Sconce has set an example for her students and any young person with dreams of a high-powered career, and her philosophy for success is pretty straightforward: Be the best. “You have to work extremely hard, know what you’re striving for, and be organized,” she says. “The more organized you are, the harder you work, it’ll show. People will see how on top of it you are. I am a hard worker, I strive for excellence and I try to be the best at what I can.” Sconce will be showing her latest collection again on May 5 at Delta College’s student fashion show, along with a few new pieces from her soon-to-be fifth collection.

1. Monetary sponsorship of any denomination (make checks payable to the Fashion Foundation)

Your generous donation would benefit the program in a number of ways:

• Support the costs of the show, and other important events in the program

• Provide scholarships to fashion students

• Provide Field trips to fashion industry centers

• Provide students with exceptional learning opportunities

• Keeps vital programs alive that benefit the community and its economy

2. Swag bag goodies

VIP SWAG BAG DONATIONS:

Your generous donations would be received by the select VIPs, DONORS AND

SUPPORTERS of the Fashion Program. We are looking for any donations that you

would deem acceptable with a minimum of 50-100 items including:

• Cosmetics

• Product Samples

• Gift cards Gift Cards or Discount Cards for your business- of any size or

value

• Could be anything – samples, small items, candy, etc with your business

card attached to promote your business – would need 75 of each
