UF Presidents MessageFebruary 13, 2013Dear Students, Faculty, Sta and Special Guests:I am delighted to welcome you to Engineers Week 2013 at
the University ofFlorida. The events of this celebraon throwa mely spotlight on the importanceof engineering and theopportunies available to students who pursue the eld as acareer.Much has been wrien about the scarcity of jobs for collegegraduates. While the economic downturn did not leaveengineering unscathed, opportunies for new hires in thiseld have remained extensive. As the economy rebounds,
the joboutlook is parcularly strong for engineers just beginning their careers. The UF College of Engineering is ranked in the top 20 naonally, with several speciales in the top ten. Our graduates are especially sought aer by industry. Forexample, the college is the third-largest source among all universies of newhires forIntel and ExxonMobil. If the job prospects in engineering are strong, so is the opportunity to make a dierence. As this weeks Engineering and Science Fair, Building Challenge and Robocs Showcase make clear, engineers are at the center of developing soluons tothe most pressing global challenges of our me from climate change to clean water, from energy to food security.I applaud our students for planning and coordinang all the events of this week. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn moreaboutengineering and its promises for our students, our graduates and our world.

Associate Deans MessageOn behalf of the Gator Engineering family, I welcome you to
2013 UF E-Week. I wish to thank all of our generous sponsors
that have made the series of acvies planned possible.
The 2013 UF E-Week tag line of Whats Your Potenal? and
the logo of the apple tree and a Gator about to be hit on the
head by an apple take us back to the well-known story of Sir
Isaac Newton and his discovery of gravitaon. It turns out
that the story we learned in grade schoolthe one that sits
Sir Newton under an apple tree only to be awoken from hiscontemplaon of the mysterious universe by an apple
strikeis parally true. Here is an excerpt from one of his
biographies wrien by William Stukely in 1752 in which Sir
Newton describes his discovery:
"Aer dinner, the weather being warm, we went into the garden and drank thea,
under the shade of some apple trees...he told me, he was just in the same situaon, as
when formerly, the noon of gravitaon came into his mind. It was occasion'd by the
fall of an apple, as he sat in contemplave mood. Why should that apple alwaysdescend perpendicularly to the ground, thought he to himself..."
Even if an apple hing his head did not inspire Sir Newtons discovery, he sll needed
inspiraon drawn from outside of his laboratory and away from his studies in order to
be hit with the discovery that was all along buried somewhere inside of him!
Your potenal as an engineer is similarly already present inside of you, much like the
fuel that waits to burned in order to transform its embodied potenal energy into
mechanical energy, or acon! Events like those oered in our 2013 UF E-Week and
throughout the year by our enriching Gator Engineering programs and student
organizaons (including our naonal award winning NSBE, SASE, SHPE, SWE, and Tau
Beta Pi chapters) will provide you the opportunity to, like Sir Newton, take it outside
and interact posively and professionally with your peers, with faculty and sta, with
our very generous corporate sponsors, and many other supporve partners of the
College of Engineering.
These interacons will ulmately lead you to lighng the fuel inside of you and
discovering your potenal, or vocaon (voice), in engineering. Hit with this
awareness, you will then be ready to turn your potenal into transformave acon in
this world as you truly live out our Gator Engineering Aributes of Creavity,
Leadership, Integrity, Professional Excellence, and Service to the Global Community!
Enjoy this week of celebrang our profession of Engineering!
Sincerely,
Dr. Angela Lindner

BEC Presidents MessageDear Students, Faculty, and Friends,
I am excited to welcome you all to Engineers Week 2013!
Every year, Benton Engineering Council strives to extend the
tradion of Naonal Engineers Week, whose purpose is to
emphasize the importance of engineering as a discipline and
honor the contribuons that engineers make to society. The
goal of Engineers Week at UF is to celebrate our
accomplishments, promote personal growth, and reach out
to the next generaon of aspiring engineers.
This years E-Week theme focuses on something every
student at the University of Florida has - untapped potenal. Whats Your Potenal?
is the queson we are asking each parcipant to reect upon during these upcoming
events. Gator Engineering has taught us all about the process of transforming energy
from potenal to kinec, and our aim with E -Week 2013 is to bring out this
transformaon within ourselves.
Since the rst Engineers Week in 1951, student leaders have harnessed the
potenal of this annual tradion to create a lasng impact on the campus as a whole.
This signicant undertaking would not be possible without the dedicaon of all who
contributed to making this years E-Week the largest to date. I am incredibly grateful
to those who have spent these past months ensuring that every person at the
University of Florida will be given the opportunity to showcase their engineering pride
at E-Week 2013.
On behalf of the E-Week commiee, partnering organizaons, and all who helped
bring this vision to life, I invite you to enjoy and make the most of the events, opportunies, and fesvies that we have planned. They demonstrate that truly it is
great to be a Florida Gator Engineer!
Go Gators!

Engineers Week Directors MessageOn behalf of the 2013 Engineers Week planning
commiee and the Benton Engineering Council, I would liketo welcome you to E-Week 2013! Engineers Week began in
1951 as a naonal celebraon of engineering
accomplishments. This year, the University of Florida iscelebrang its 68th annual Engineering and Science Fair
which has been integrated to be our largest event during E-
Week. This huge showcase is designed to educate children of
all ages about engineering. Using displays and interacve
booths, visitors can see the rich diversity of the discipline and
the huge impact it has on our world. Engineers Week 2013 isthemed Whats Your Potenal? to remind us all to push ourselves and strive to help
accomplish this impact to our fullest capabilies.Being a Gator Engineer has been an extremely rewarding experience. I have been
challenged and movated both in and out of the classroom. I have learned lessons ofintegrity, communicaon, leadership, and compassion. There is an excellence that we
as engineers must strive for in our professional and personal lives. We must look for
inspiraon all around us and remember to work with passion.
Throughout the week of events, you will nd themes of outreach, development, professionalism, diversity, and camaraderie. These simple words dene the goals of E-
Week. We will be connuing the tradion of the E-Week Cup, which will be earned by
the student organizaon demonstrang the strongest commitment and Gator spirit. Itis our hope that this healthy compeon will inspire student organizaons to
parcipate more and more in E-Week and push their members to be the best they can
be.I would like to extend my thanks to everyone involved in making this event a reality,
especially the planning commiee and parcipang sociees. If they didnt see thepotenal in our mission, E-Week would not be more than an idea. It is with their
leadership and dedicaon that E-Week can meet its full potenal to bring together
faculty, professionals, and students of all ages under the context of celebrang theimportance of engineering in our world.
Finally, I would like to thank all who helped to support E-Week, including the faculty
and each of our industry sponsors. It is with your help and guidance that we can grow
E-Week each and every year into an occasion of extraordinary magnitude. It is my hope that you will join us this week in exploring everything Engineers Week
has to oer. I hope you can take away not only a deeper understanding of engineering, but also lessons in personal and professional excellence as we strive to reach our full
potenal. Now let me ask you, Whats Your Potenal?Sincerely,Kelly HalliseyExecuve Director, Engineers Week 2013
