Three Easy Ways toCut Energy Costs Western Montana Lighting, Missoula shares three easy solutions that budget-conscious households can use to immediately save money.

1. Read Your Labels. Before you purchase another light bulb, lighting fixture or ceiling fan, look for the Energy Star® label. Those products have undergone rigorous testing and meet the government’s strictest new guidelines for energy efficiency.

All of the Energy Star products have easy-to-read consumer guides right on the box. At a home center or large retailer, you’ll have to read the packages carefully when comparison shopping. However, a trip to your local lighting showroom will provide all of the information you need to make an informed decision.

2. Ceiling Fans Are Your BFF.“Before purchasing a fan, do your homework,” Cliff Crimmings, vice president/marketing for Craftmade International of Coppell, Texas, advises. How large is the room? How high is the ceiling? Do you want the fan to blend in with the ceiling or become a major component in the décor? Would you like it to have a light that will take the place of a lighting fixture? Would you prefer to operate it via a remote control or with a wall switch? “These are all important things to think about, because your fan will last for years. All ceiling fans, because of their design and low energy consumption, will start to save you money from day one; the new Energy Star-qualified models will increase those savings even more,” Crimmings says. You will receive the best advice and get the most for your investment when shopping and purchasing at an ALA member Lighting Showroom.

3. Choose The Right Light Source.“Since lighting accounts for approximately 20 percent of a home’s energy cost, changing the most frequently used lights to more efficient fluorescent versions can make a tremendous difference,” explains Terry McGowan, ALA’s director of engineering and technology and the owner of Lighting Ideas in Cleveland. “The key is to consider the hours of use – the savings are greater and bulb life is longer when fluorescent lighting remains on for longer periods of time.”

Three Easy Ways to Cut Energy CostsContinued from page 7

You may have received a CFL in the mail from your electric company or purchased them on sale at a home center or mass retailer and been disappointed in the quality. According to Rey-Barreau, finding the right compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) for your needs requires a little know-how. “All incandescent bulbs have approximately the same color quality. Therefore, when you buy an exact replacement for your 60-watt incandescent, the color quality will always look the same,” he says. “With CFLs, the process is more complicated. A CFL produces about four times the light for the same amount of energy as an incandescent. To find the CFL that will produce the same amount of light as your existing incandescent, divide the wattage by four.” For example, to replace a 100-watt incandescent, you need a 25-watt CFL.

Then there’s the matter of color. “CFLs are available in three colors, and are often described as warm, neutral, and cool. The warm color will usually be the closest to incandescent,” Rey-Barreau reveals. By far, in this region the easiest way to find the right CFL for your home is to go to Western Montana Lighting on South Reserve in Missoula.

Using CFLs in a room that is also lit with incandescent lights can offer the best visual balance while saving money. “Light layering is an excellent technique,” McGowan states. “There are situations where CFLs and standard incandescent lamps can be mixed so that lighting quality is enhanced. A lighting showroom can help you see this for yourself.”

When replacing incandescent lights with CFLs, it’s important to consider the application. “CFLs are not ideal for all locations,” cautions Craig Wright, product manager for Progress Lighting of Greenville, S.C. “For example, decorative fixtures with shades pointing downward (or in chandeliers) will reveal the bulb to the living space, which could possibly increase glare and detract from the ambience.” In those cases, using controls such as dimmers and occupancy sensors for incandescent bulbs will help minimize energy use. In this region, you will find the most knowledgeable, experienced, Certified Lighting Consultants at Western Montana Lighting. A member of the American Lighting Association, they are located at 3250 South Reserve St., Missoula. Call 406-543-7166 or go on line to westernmontanalighting.com

BBIA and Bitterroot Youth Home Continue Partnership-Laura Henning, BYH Development Coordinator

At first glance, a building industry association and a home for teenagers seem to have nothing in common. That’s certainly not what Dale Hanson (current BBIA member and former board chair) thought when he facilitated the relationship six years ago. Dale, who became aware of the Bitterroot Youth Home through a BBIA General Membership Meeting presentation, suggested our organization when the BBIA board wanted to create a partnership with a non-profit in the Bitterroot Valley. After one year, Dale suggested continuing the relationship so the two organizations could benefit from each other, and our relationship was cemented.

The Bitterroot youth Home is an eight-bed home that cares for kids who can’t stay in their own homes. Kids come to us because something in their life is broken – they’ve been abused or neglected, their parents are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, or they have acted out inappropriately and committed minor offenses. While the reasons they come to us are varied, all of these kids are in desperate need of the safe, stable environment our home offers.

While kids are with us, we meet their basic needs – a warm bed to sleep in, regular healthy meals and new clothing. But the care we offer goes much further than that. We provide a caring staff that gives guidance and helps these kids trust adults again. We teach them how to express their emotions in a healthy way. We get them to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. We get them back on track in school. Whether they’re with us for just a few days, a few months, or a year, these children all come out of the situation better than when they arrived.

The BBIA has provided a great learning experience for our kids as well. Five years ago, we became involved in the Home and Ranch

Expo. Not only are the canned goods people bring for admission donated to us, but we also run the concession stand as a fundraiser and work study opportunity for our kids. The kids, with supervision from our staff, handle all aspects of the stand, including cooking the food to ringing up purchases. One year, 12-year old Johnny, who came to us a week after his mother died, became the master griller and spent the day flipping burgers. Every time I checked in on the kids, there stood Johnny with the spatula in his hand and a huge grin on his face. It was the first time he had really engaged in a project and the staff was thrilled with the progress he made after that.

But the relationship we have with the BBIA goes much further than this one event. When we moved into our new home three years ago, we approached BBIA members to help with the construction. Whenever we have any type of construction or facility question, we go to the BBIA first. Members have also contributed individually by purchasing Christmas presents for our kids as well as sponsoring our Gala Fundraiser Event each February. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this year, we would like to thank the Bitterroot Building Industry Association and everything that it has done for us over the years. We are grateful that you continue working with us and are looking forward to the next five years!
