From the Director
In our annual report highlighting the accomplishments of 2012, I spoke of many successes in that
year and our optimism for 2013. It turns out that optimism was well placed—2013 was a great year
for the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum!
There were important additions to the museum collections and improvements to the property; Lew
Wallace and Ben-Hur were featured in significant news stories across the county; we initiated a cap-
ital campaign for restoration of the interior paint finishes and electrical system of the Study; and we
hosted a wonderful June event for the membership featuring the extraordinary Duesenberg owned
by Lew Wallace, Jr. and his family in the 1930s.
The board continued to encourage advancement by supporting attendance of staff and trustees at
the Montgomery County Community Foundation Non-Profit Workshop Series. In addition, the staff
supported educational outreach in a number of ways, including a garden workshop on the property
by Grounds Manager Deb King, and Associate Director Amanda McGuire teaching a workshop
session at the annual meeting of the Association of Indiana Museums. Visitor Services Coordinator
Stephanie Cain added to our social media outreach by redesigning the website and introducing a
number of new social media platforms.
In 2013, two board members completed their terms of service. Both Helen Hudson and Suanne
Milligan served the board for six years and each had served two terms as board presidents. In addi-
tion, staff member Erin Gobel resigned to pursue other employment, but she was soon asked to join
the board as a trustee. In addition to Erin joining the board, new board members affirmed at the
November meeting included Elaine Chase, and Jamey Norton. Perhaps the most important board
activity of 2013 was the development of the newest strategic plan. In December of 2013, the
second of our strategic plans concluded. During the summer, the board met four times in extended
sessions, including one public session open to our stakeholders, to develop the next plan so that the
museum can continue its path of growth and accomplishment. This plan will run from 2014 through
the end of 2016.
Just as 2013 looked to be a year of accomplishment for the museum, 2014 promises to be a year
that will see great changes and improvements to the property and in our ability to reach people as
we share the story of Lew Wallace. We thank each and every person who has been a part of the
history of the museum over the past year and look forward to the historic
differences that we will make together in the coming year.
Larry S. Paarlberg Director
A quick summary of 2013 by the numbers
7,342 people visited the Study and grounds. The museum website (www.ben-hur.com) boasted a visitation of 12,556 from 105 countries!
52 people listened to Civil War music in the Study during an evening program presented by men from Wabash College.
Volunteers donated 1,415 hours of their time.
150 of Lew Wallace’s books were cataloged. 853 children and parents participated in the Easter Egg Hunt in March.
9 trees were planted, including 4 magnolias.
1 Duesenberg previously owned by Lew Wallace Jr. visited the grounds.
History Beneath Us attracted 171 visitors during spring and fall sessions. Over 100 people and their dogs attended Stroll for Strays in May.
Staff delivered off-site programs or Discovery Kits to 295 preschool, elementary, and middle school students.
398 preschool, elementary, middle and high school students and 39 adult chaperones and teachers visited the Study on field trips.
299 annuals and perennials were planted in the gardens and 211 spring flowering bulbs were planted in the fall.
A family of 5 red-shouldered hawks made the Study their home during the spring and summer.
9 Adopt-a-Spot gardens were adopted.
4 couples celebrated their weddings on Study grounds. The Study hosted 23 international visitors hailing from Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Korea, Russia,
Spain and the Philippines. 17 Park Day volunteers collected over 2 trailers full of limbs and leaves to take to
the compost site. 71 people attended at least one of the 5 lectures during the Genealogy Lecture
Series.
Staff delivered off-site programs to 258 adults.
42 people attended one of our 2 special tours offered. An art conservator examined 7 paintings at the Study.
Over 2,000 people attended the TASTE of Montgomery County contributing $17,000 to local food vendors.
7 Interpretative signs added to the grounds to enhance educational outreach.
Exhibits Inspired by Lew and Susan Wallace’s great-grandchildren, William
Wallace, Maggie Wallace Daly, and Susan Wallace Drake, the 2013
annual exhibit was entitled Generations: The Descendants of Lew &
Susan Wallace. This exhibit looked at Lew and Susan’s son, Henry, and
their grandchildren, Lew Jr., and William, as well as the children of Lew,
Jr. The exhibit looked at some of the characteristics and traits of the
Wallace family that appeared time and again in the family. Military
service, creativity, business
acumen and other traits were
highlighted. Much of the 2013
programming supported this
annual theme and included presenta-
tions on genealogical research, care of
family photographs, and ways to share
family history.
In addition to the formal exhibit in the
Lynne D. Hohlbein Gallery in the Carriage House, the museum installed a number
of signs across the property that highlight specific features on the grounds. The
signs have information about selected preservation themes and they are interactive. On each of the
signs is a “QR” code that can be accessed
by smart phones. These codes bring up
additional information
related to the specific sign
and have the added
advantage that we can
update the “QR” code to
highlight new information
as it becomes available.
Public Outreach and Education In over 30 public presentations, staff and Wallace scholars gave
presentations on Lew Wallace, Ben-Hur, and the museum. A number
of these public offerings were unusual and creative. John Swansburg
a writer for SLATE magazine, the on-line publication for the Washing-
ton Post, did an extensive article on Lew Wallace that brought signifi-
cant attention. The award-winning book, Shadow of Shiloh went on-
line as an E-book opening avenues for increased exposure. The im-
pact of Wallace and his writing generated professional interest when
Rutgers University highlighted Ben-Hur in a symposium devoted to
Wallace’s masterwork and its impact on modern Christianity.
Larry Paarlberg and board president Tim McCormick took the 2012 Bohumir
Kryl project on the road in 2013 presenting a program complete with origi-
nal Kryl recordings from ca. 1900 to the Bohemian National Cemetery in
Chicago. Kryl, a Bohemian by birth, was the stone carver responsible for the
elaborate work on the Study building who became a nationally recognized
band master. The large audience at the Bohemian National Cemetery pro-
gram demonstrated their pride and interest in the accomplishments of Kryl.
In one of our most exciting, and unusual, marketing partnerships the new
professional soccer team in Indianapolis selected Indy Eleven as their
name. This was selected in part to honor Lew Wallace’s Civil War unit the
Eleventh Indiana Volunteers. Through social media and the marketing of the Indy 11, a new and
diverse constituency was introduced to Lew Wallace.
Finally, the property continued to serve the Crawfordsville community in many ways from the City
wide Easter Egg Hunt to the TASTE of Montgomery County, many thousands enjoyed this garden
space in the heart of the community.

Collections Care & Restoration 2013 was an exciting year for the Museum. Perhaps the most exciting
effort was the initiation of the capital campaign that will fund a com-
plete upgrade of the electrical system in the Study and the full restora-
tion of the original 1890s interior paint finishes as created by General
Wallace. From large “thermometers” located strategically around town
to a campaign video created by David Mackey of Houston, Texas high-
lighting the restoration, this effort received wide-spread support from
folks both in Crawfordsville and from across the country. We anticipate
completion of the campaign in 2014 and the initiation of the work.
The property itself saw enhancement with
the restoration of a significant portion of
the south brick wall along the shared
property line between the museum prop-
erty and the old Wallace home. This was
a large project that made a great differ-
ence to both the structural integrity of
the wall and to its appearance. Grounds manager Deb King
continued her efforts to restore the garden features of the
property. In 2013 she recreated the moat garden that
Wallace developed when he filled in the moat adjacent to
the east foundation wall of the Study and thanks to a grant
from the Montgomery County Community Foundation, Deb
planted four magnolias.
The collections were improved in 2013 with the addition of
important artifacts that have direct Wallace connec-
tions. These included a diamond encrusted gold box
given to the Wallace’s by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the
original Ben-Hur contract signed by Lew Wallace with
Harper and Brothers, family photo-
graphs, and Wallace family ledger
books. In addition, steps were
taken to protect the collection with
the installation of UV film to protect
items on display from the effects of
light.
