Executive Director Board President

Dear Friends of COMPAS,

COMPAS is a Masterpiece in the Making – 40 years old in 2014! We are celebrating you, our patrons who have created art access for thousands and thousands (and thousands!) of children, teens and adults. It all started with a fearless founder, NEA grant for $10K and a knock on the door with an anonymous matching gift. That initial investment created Poets in the Schools – and as the saying goes – the rest is history!

Participatory arts experiences remain the hallmark of COMPAS programs. With the support of major funders – 3M, Travelers, Ecolab, US Bank, Target, General Mills, the Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation, the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Surdna Foundation, Nicholson Family Foundation and Hubbard Foundation – COMPAS created arts access by bringing trained and professional artists to more than 100 Minnesota schools, and many community settings including area libraries, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and older adult residences like Lyngblomsten.

Art access is so important because the arts – writing, performing, music and visual arts – help children realize the incredible breadth of human experiences inside and around them as well as across the globe. Children use what they learn in COMPAS art programs to recognize different ways humans express their feelings and convey meaning – enabling them to develop subtle and complex forms of thinking while they create original work they are proud of. Youth revel in their creations while developing essential skills that will hold them in good stead, wherever their paths may take them.

Integrating arts experiences of exceptional quality into learning and lives of Minnesota’s children remains at the very core of what we do. You make it possible to directly impact 50,000+ people annually. Thank you for your generous support and faith in our mission.

celebrated 21 years of

partnering with

Travelers, Inc. to

manage their Arts & Diversity grant-making

program, including distributing $2.5 million to

smaller arts organizations, before successfully

transferring the program to Travelers for internal

administration.

Apprenticeship programs created experiential

learning and paycheck-earning opportunities for

young people. These teens created stunning

mosaics now on display outside Juxtaposition Arts in

Minneapolis, original theater productions with

Dreamland Arts in Saint Paul, or fabulous creative

writing led by May Lee-Yang. Over at The Canvas

teen center in Saint Paul, another youth

composed and performed poetry, enhanced the

community with jaw-dropping murals and more.

life in a hospital for pediatric patients and more social

connections, satisfaction and enjoyment for older

adults living in senior residences.
