A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR BILL CLINTON, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVICE AND TO EXTEND TO HIM A CORDIAL WELCOME TO THE PALMETTO STATE UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS ADDRESS AT THE RILEY INSTITUTE’S “AN EVENING WITH BILL CLINTON,” TO BE HELD APRIL 8, 2014, IN GREENVILLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn that former President Bill Clinton will travel to the Palmetto State on April 8, 2014, to present “An Evening With Bill Clinton,” sponsored by the Riley Institute at Furman University; and

Whereas, Mr. Clinton will deliver remarks to help celebrate the lifelong work of Greenville native Richard W. Riley, former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Secretary of Education, and to promote the Furman public-policy organization that bears Mr. Riley’s name; and

Whereas, Dick Riley, Furman alumnus and advisory board chair of the Riley Institute, served under President Clinton for eight years as U.S. Secretary of Education. Working together, he and President Clinton launched initiatives to raise academic standards, improve education for the poor and disadvantaged, and expand grants and loan programs to help more Americans go to college; and

Whereas, William Jefferson Clinton was the first Democratic President in six decades to be elected twice, first in 1992 and again in 1996. Under his leadership, the country enjoyed the strongest economy in a generation and the longest economic expansion in

U.S. history, including the creation of more than twenty-two million jobs; and

Whereas, after leaving the White House, Mr. Clinton established the Clinton Foundation with the mission of improving global health, strengthening economies, promoting health and wellness, and protecting the environment; and

Whereas, in addition to his Clinton Foundation work, the former President has served as the top United Nations envoy for the Indian Ocean tsunami recovery effort and as U.N. Special Envoy to Haiti. Today, the Clinton Foundation is supporting economic growth, capacity building, and education in Haiti; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to extend to former President Bill Clinton a warm welcome to South Carolina and wish him a pleasant and rewarding visit to our State as he speaks at “An Evening With Bill Clinton.” Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Bill Clinton, former President of the United States, for his many years of dedicated public service and extend to him a cordial welcome to the Palmetto State upon the occasion of his address at the Riley Institute’s “An Evening With Bill Clinton,” to be held April 8, 2014, in Greenville.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bill Clinton.
