Super Sydney Footystats on the

1995 Gro/rd Final

The highs-and-lows of every season always come under review, as thoughtful administrators begin to clear away the debris of one, and ready themselves f6r another season. In most instances we have been fortunate at a League level throughout 1995, not to have had many controversial subjects to take our focus away from what is our purpose. At club level, the chief aim, is the struggle to

If however, a club has a secretary who never has enough time, always has too much to do, and rarely knows where anything is - then, their future is just as bleak as it has been all the way through this season. If the operating committee has allowed such a functionary to hold their office, then they are more guiity of inefficiency than their struggling fool. I'd rather have one capable club secretary than a full forward who can kick a hundred goals. A

the smallest of clubs. That would indeed be the thoughts of mindful subjects who are dedicated to fostering the growth of our code in what is still a 'hostile' environment. Where are the people — when will we grow? I seem to have said that somewhere before.

Pennant HMs recovered a big slice of their pride and composure when they gained a 46pt victory over Baulkham HUls in Sunday's Preliminary played at Monarch Field. After their thrashing in the Second Semi-Final it may well prove to be a valuable lesson as the Demons would have been certain to have learned a few

Green, who produced five of their IS goals. Penno's new strengths will now be put to the final test. Several weeks ago,U was forecast that if the Demons made it through to the Grand Final, they would be sentimental favourites, and there will be a lot of spectators hoping they will find the desire and urgency to defeat a side which many will see, as having enjoyed too much success - it's time for another club to get a turn. Campbelltown in such a short space of history have accomplished much -this is their seventh Grand Final in 11 years, and they have their sixth SFL pennant weU within their grasp. The Blueys have a swag of potential match-winners - Lee

Campbelltown by their performances, deserve and will win the 1995 Sydney tide.

When winners are losers, and losers are winners ... Proving there are no easy answers, the administrators of the League this week had to make a testing decision. In last Sunday's Under 19 curtain-raiser, as page 37 shows, the scoreboard read, Pennant Hills 7.11-53, Baulkham Hills 4.9-33. However during a tense final quarter when Baulko were fighting for survival it was discovered their opponents had for what is understood to have been around eleven minutes of play, 19 men on the field. No count was taken (by the umpire in the conventional manner) and what followed means that while scores will remain as part of the record, the match result was reversed and Baulkham Hills will now play St George for the Under 19's Premiership. The League issued the Mowing -

During the final quarter of last week's Under 19 Preliminary Final between Baulkham Hills and Pennant Hills, the Pennant Hills team

was found to nave 19 players on the field. Following consideration of the circumstances and submissions from relevant

officials and from each club, the League Administration has decided to reverse the result of the match which was won by Pennant Hills

and therefore award the match to Baulkham Hffls."

1 _ Intnn UWvrfcWnfr (BH\ It was a tense atmosphere at the Western Suburbs club last Monday night as votes from the final round were needed to decide the winner of the 1995 Phelan.

The result was a tight but popular triumph for the Falcons ruckman Graham Jones who won his second Phelan by two votes from Magpies captain Michael Partridge. Jones was the winner 11 seasons ago in 1984 as a ruckman for the Western Suburbs club.

BEFORE the record crowd of the season, Newtown (minor premiers) defeated South Sydney in the grand final of the Australian Rules competition on Saturday at ErskinevilleOval.

The exhibition was marred by frequent use of fisticuffs on the part of several players. On several different occasions the timely intervention of a squad of police prevented what appeared likely to develop into a series brawl.

Newtown won because its attacking men were seldom out of position, whereas South many times after working the ball forward found it quickly returned down field. The Southern forwards were seldom in position, and the Newtown defenders' task was much easier as a result. REDUCED LEAD

Only during the third quarter could it be said mat Newtown was seriously threatened. That term was all South, who, by persistent attacks reduced the half-time arrears to six points.

Early in the final quarter, the home side obtained a brace of goals for a winning lead, and though Gough's men fought desperately towards the end, Newtown held them off and won the premiership of the season by 19 points.

For the winners, Garvin and Matthews on the half-back line, were the pick. Both handled the greasy ball

J.Ludlow; McGuire and Bagnall were effective. The latter's scouting out from the packs enabled him to initiate many attacks. Scott (full-back) and Cuneen (roving) were also serviceable.

The losers had the best man on the ground in Ferguson (centre). Despite much attention, he was always to the fore in driving the ball well towards goal, and is was no fault of his that South went down.

Curtis, James and Stiff were always under notice for great efforts while Dixon and Coombes showed pace and ability above the ordinary.

Newtown 7.12 (54 points); South Sydney 5.5 (35 points).

TIGERS RE-APPOINT J O H N REID • Balmain have announced John Reid will continue at Drummoyne Oval in 1996 ... 'though with only one win to their credit in 1995, the Tigers proved to be far mote competitive and John's work has laid a foundation stone ... the club well-known for their off-field activities, leave soon, straight-after the AFL Grand Final for their annual footy trip - this time, to Denmark ... the Tigers will play the Danes who have a comp running, with even one of two Swedish sides playing ... the trip will also visit Amsterdam (for window shopping), as well as going to Berlin, then on the England ... you've certainly gotta hand it to Balmain -they may not win many games, but they have a heck of a load of fun trying to ... the club is looking for players who would want to be part of a club, who know how to reward their players - if you're interested for 1996, give SIMON KELLY a call at the Club, on 81-1687 ...

FALCONS B O W OUT • The hopes of Baulkham Hills lived deep hito the last half of their Preliminary Final contest against Pennant Hills, reports PAM JOHNSON ... it was hard-fought and close, but Penno pulled away is the last quarter to nnlZt winners by 46pts ... it was an exciting day for Banlko and expectations were high that the Falcons would go on with it, but to was not to be... Baulko's failure to make full use of the wind in the first quarter gained them only a one-goal lead at the first break ... the Dernons then applied their pressure and moved ahead to the long break, creating a platform for a good hard third term, which had its share of physical and spiteful moments... though defeated, Baulko stiS have a great deal of pride in what their players accomplished in '9sfand put themselves on the map, as one to be respected ... Sunday was a day of disappointment but as events unfolded in the following days, still sees the Falcons colors being carried into the field on Grand final Day ... the Under 19s lost in controversial circumstances when WAYNE POBJE, SHANNON ALTOJAY and JOHN MION were among the best, but by Tuesday, they had been awarded the match result and win have a great chance of toppling the Saints this week ... of course the season was capped off in fine style on Monday night when GRAHAM JONES took out his second Phelan Medal... Jonesy had a wonderful season - he is a marvellous player and a wonderful clubman, and thoroughly deserves the highest recognition that Sydney football can give to their players ... all that is needed is for the Falcon's Under 19's to win this week, and just you wait, for Baulkham Hills to really put their stamp on Sydney footy in 1996...

D E M O N S MAKE G R A N D FINAL • A defeat of neighbourhood rivals Bauko secured Pennant Hills only their second senior Grand Final appearance of their 25 years in Sydney football ...it was a complete reversal of the previous wr*h'~ -J

A T H O U S A N D THANK-YOU's • As our 116th season draws to a close (we set out on this path back in 1880) we express our sincere appreciation to

detail HELEN MEYER gives to her passion of Aussie Rules m her one-hour program each Thursday night on 2NBC-FM (90.1). Chief focus of 'The Meyer Stand' is the south and inner-west, but it is always a joy to hear Helen and her two uncontrollable tide-kicks MICHAEL CUFT and PAUL WILLIAMSON rap across the interests of the SFL (and StKitda), the SFA (and St Kiuta), theAFL(andSt Kilda), with just the merest of mentions to the embattled future of St Kilda... (love the show, hate the music) — thank you for another great season Helen, may you long continue. It doesn't matter whether you "re under the shower or just sitting elsewhere early on Saturday mornings, just as long as a radio is close at hand between 8.30am and 9am, to hear the 'free-wheeling'style ofsiMON KELLY, the high-degree of intelligent content offered by ROB KERR and the highAevetof control exhibited by CRAIG DAVIS on our own 2SER-FM (107.3) 'Footy Show'. The program has become a mainstay of our Sydney footy information, and apart from the surprisingly frequent technical studio glitches, the th/ee wise Idiots'plug along and regularly deliver 30 minutes of infotainment to our dedicated supporters of Sydney football.

To all the loyal contributors of the Football Record this season, it is my choice to single out one, LIONEL BEALE. Whether as the ever-present time-keeper across three matches of his mucMoved North Shore, writing for his many Northside list of publications. Manly Dally, North Shore Times, MosnW DSUy etc., "Poppa Bear" or "High Mark" or whatever, has served football across so many years, the number tends to blur. Lionel was the Secretary of the League more than twenty years ago, and he even had a stint and added his guidance as club Chairman last year when the Bears

our many sponsors and advertisers. It is were going through difficult and testing • • 1 " times. A man with strong views, yet one

who is wealth of information - my kinda of footy is indeed thankful for having dedicated people and friends such as Lionel.

ANOTHER S E A S O N .... • In the adjoining column. I made reference thai we now closing our 116th season of football in Sydney - yes, it all started in 1880, and we're still striving for success. Now the hard part starts, as we waste no time, taking no breaks or breaths, fine-tuning the Betails of 1995, as we gear up for 1996. The next year must always be better than the last one. How can we improve on what we did in '95? - if only we could May all of our dreams reach fruition -may all your days be good ones, 'til .next we meet.

a time-honored cliche, but without YOUR support, our task would have been made all the more-difficuU. To the many publications across the range of both the SFL and SFA, who have carried worthy stories about the clubs and our code — we thank you all. The media attracts its own personalities and one who has become a very-welcome face each Saturday afternoon has been JOHANNA SWEET. The

ever-present reminder of the work we must do to achieve our goals. Radio highlights have included the Saturday morning attention developed on North Harbour Radio FM100.9 in their sporting program. I have found particular pleasure throughout t&s season In hearing (and helping out when I can), the work and

WALES HROUGH TO GRAND FINAL

In stark contrast to the hot conditions encountered over the previous two weeks, steady rain greeted the two sides as they took the field and for the first time in many weeks, the players had to contend with a greasy ball and a slippery ground. Sydney University were forced to defend grimly in the eraly stages of the match as the Wailes peppered the goals. Two early majors to BEN FISHER heralded his return to form after a late start to the season and another two inspirational goals by CRAIG McLENNAN and P A U L MONGAN were valuable scores in the damp conditions, with the ball sure to get heavier as the match progressed.

Trailing by four goals at quarter time, Sydney Uni lifted their game and their players committed their bodies much harder in the contest for the ball. In a reversal of the first term, the bait rarely ventured on to the Uni of NSW forward line and their backline was under continuous pressure.

Skipper TIM STACK broke through with his sides first goal mid-way through the term and MICHAEL BURDEU followed with another shortly after to put Sydney Uni right back into the game. Sydney continued to attack for the remainder of the quarter but squandered valuable opportunities in registering 3.7 to trail by two points at the main break when they could have easily have opened up a handy lead.

The pendulum swung again in the third as the Wailes steadied and began to make the most of every possession. Ben Fisher continued to make bis presence felt on the forward line and DAVE BING used his extensive knowledge of Rosedale Oval as he threaded through a team-lifting goal from the boundary line to give his side a handy break. The quarter was not without problems for the Wales however, their 'attacking' defender JIM DAWES limped off the field and shortly after PAUL LALOR's first senior game came to an end as he was stretched off with a dislocated elbow. A goal off the ground by PHIL HOLMES a minute after the start of the final term was the first for the march at the Hume Highway end and the magin increased to 31 points. A few minutes later Bingy popped another and the Wales' grand final final berth seemed certain. With

their tails up, UNi of NSW ran right away in the closing stages for a comfortable 7-goalwin.

Steve Byrns, Peter Briede, Jim Eddy and Rod Bordognon were among the better players for Uni of NSW as were Ben Fisher and Phil Holmes who each contrinuted four valuable goals. For Sydney
