2012 Western Tidewater Free Clinic State of the Mission 1

Dear Friends,In June 2012, we celebrated the Clinic’s five-year

anniversary. As far back as 2004, many of you were involved and supportive when a group of visionary, compassionate and determined individuals joined together to plan a free clinic to meet the needs of the uninsured residents of Western Tidewater. Our dream became a reality when Western Tidewater Free Clinic opened its doors in June 2007 in a small building on Godwin Boulevard.

In the first six months, the Clinic served 424 patients with a small staff, many volunteers and generous donors. Since then, the number of patients served has continued to expand, and by the end of 2012, 2,884 patients had received medical, dental and other healthcare services. This explosive growth was enabled by steadfast volunteers, partnerships with other healthcare providers and generous financial contributions from our community.

Another major factor in the Clinic’s growth was the acquisition and renovation of a much larger facility on Meade Parkway in 2009, thanks to the Obici Healthcare Foundation and other generous donors. With four times our original square footage, we have added a dental suite, more examination rooms, a pharmacy and other key services for our patients. As we look back over the last five years, we are grateful for the many ways in which you have supported the Clinic’s mission and patients.

Looking forward, we will continue to increase the number of patients served as long as we have the resources needed to provide the comprehensive, coordinated care our neighbors deserve. We are never

without a waiting list of uninsured residents seeking health care.

And yet, the impact of the Affordable Care Act in Virginia is still uncertain. Research and predictions by healthcare “think tanks” indicate that many people will remain uninsured for a number of years. As the future of healthcare options becomes clearer over the upcoming years, we will continue to evaluate how best we can serve the most vulnerable members of our community.

We plan to be here for them, and we trust that you will stay the course with us as long as we have uninsured, underserved neighbors lacking access to basic health care. We are indeed blessed to have you as part of the Clinic’s team in providing health and hope to those most in need.

With heartfelt appreciation,

When Amy came to see us,she had lost her smile.A host of medical anddental issues—includingdiabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, and severe

periodontal disease—had taken their toll. At 32 yearsold, she rarely smiled, had limited eye contact, andwas an emotional and often sad young lady.

After being stabilized medically at WesternTidewater Free Clinic, Amy was referred to the dentalclinic. Due to the severity of her tooth decay, all of herremaining teeth were extracted. Six months later, aftermultiple extractions and time to allow her gums toheal, Amy received a full set of Larell dentures.

Because of donor support and the Clinic’s ability

to provide this service in-house and at a reduced cost,Amy has her smile back. With her diabetes and bloodpressure well under control, we are reminded of theimpact the Clinic has on people’s lives. Amy’s smileis in her eyes, in her voice, andin the way she carries herself. And, after several years ofunemployment, she now hasfound a job!

Sometimes it is hard tobelieve that the happy, healthy, and self-confident person we seetoday was once a tearful and shyyoung woman, plagued with chronic disease. Goodhealth does make a difference! We love to see ourpatients smile.

Speakers’ BureauAre you a member of a civic group, club, Sunday

school class, or other group that might host a speaker from time to time? We would love to come and share the Clinic’s story, mission and programs with you. In-dividuals and small groups can also learn more about the clinic by arranging a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the Clinic. For information or to schedule a speaker or a tour, contact Alyson Miles [email protected] or at 757-923-1060, ext. 7012.

United WayPlease consider designating Western Tidewater

Free Clinic to receive a portion, or perhaps all, of the funds you contribute to the United Way. The Clinic received United Way certification in May of 2011.

Legacy GivingLegacy gifts provide future support for a charity.

Please consider this timeless and foresighted way to support and sustain Western Tidewater Free Clinic. If you have already included the Clinic in your estate plans, or for more information, contact Miriam Beiler at [email protected] or 757-923-1060, ext. 7001.

Top: Director of Development Texie Marks, Volunteers Nancy Verdi-rame, Dr. Joe Verdirame, and Jane Schaubach share a moment of cheer at the volunteer Christmas party. Middle left: Staff Dentist Dr. Ernest Knight has been with the Clinic since January 2012. Middle right: Board Member Patsy Joyner is an invaluable Clinic volunteer. Bottom: Medical Assistant Chynita Motley takes a break during a busy clinic day.

According to the Virginia Association of Free Clinics, for every $1.00 spent, free clinics pro-vide at least $6.00 of medical care to patients.
