Regional Chambers Meet-N-Move on November 5th

Meet-N-Greet business members of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, the Zelienople-Harmony Area Chamber of Commerce and THE CHAMBER, Inc. on Monday, November 5, 2012, during lunch. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Pittsburgh Marriott North @ Cranberry Woods and is exclusively for members of one of the participating Chambers of Commerce. Admission is $25 per person, and the format will be the popular progressive luncheon style. Guests will develop new leads as they move from table to table.

Remarks at Celebrate Business Dinner 2012ood Evening…I want to thank you for attending this evening at this great new facility here at Slippery Rock University. This large room is but a small part of this newest facility here at Slippery Rock. I want to thank Dr. Norton for hosting this

event. The Chamber Board was privileged to have a tour of this facility a couple of weeks ago. I would encourage all of you to learn more about this facility and its many offerings.

The Robert Smith Student Center was built based on student input over the past several years. It is “THE” student center and reflects the needs and desires of the growing Slippery Rock student body. Based on our tour, ‘I’d say they got it right!’ It is certainly much different than life when I was a college student…several years ago.

The Motto of YOUR Chamber, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce is “We Mean Business” …just like this student center was built to reflect the needs of the students….YOUR Chamber, endeavors to meet and reflect the needs of our members. I encourage all members to take an active role in the organization and take advantage of a variety of Chamber activities.

I would be remiss if I did not first acknowledge the engine behind YOUR Chamber..Stan Kosciuszko. Stan has served the Chamber for 10 years. Stan along with Jennifer Monaco are YOUR staff. What they accomplish along with a legion of volunteers in truly amazing. To Stan and Jennifer, my heartfelt thanks for making the work of the Board so easy.

I thought I would spend just a few minutes reviewing some of the events and activities hosted by YOUR Chamber this year. Leadership Butler County is in its 20th year. This is the premiere opportunity to learn about our County, the businesses and agencies that make up our County and meet key leaders. The goal of Leadership Butler County is to identify new leaders and develop leadership skills. This year 24 new leaders for YOUR Chamber and Community completed the course.

This year, the group identified “First Impressions” as the agency for their class project, and raised over $14,000.00 for their cause. First Impressions is a division of BHS Family Services, located on North Washington Street in Butler that serves the children of our community by providing shoes and clothing at no cost for those who qualify.

For our affiliate, Butler Downtown, this was a year of transition as we received a new leader Chelynne Curci. The group was rocked by the sudden passing of Becky Smith who provided outstanding leadership during her tenure. Butler Downtown is served by a dedicated Board and outstanding volunteers. In May of this year the City of Butler was recognized as #7 “Best Small Towns in America” by Smithsonian magazine. The entire community is proud of this recognition. In June the West New Castle Street Plaza was dedicated as a central gathering place for residents. It featured live music, movies and more.

Also in June, YOUR Chamber announced a partnership with ‘The Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University. CWE Connect is an online, members-only community for busy women business owners and managers. Hiring Our Heroes was held July 30th at the Butler VA Medical Center. This was an opportunity for YOUR Chamber to join with the U. S. Chamber as well as the PA Chamber of Business and Industry to benefit our veterans. The event featured 39 employers and 11 service and educational providers. This event was targeted at veterans and their spouses. 10 vets were hired on the spot…20 were offered jobs…65 were scheduled for second interviews. Thanks to Kenmac Rentals and Sales for providing set-up worthy of the finest trade show.

In August, the Women United Conference was held here at SRU in partnership with Women United and Slippery Rock University. 146 women attended. The event featured 8 working information sessions and 15 vendors.

Your Chamber offers many activities throughout the year. To mention some: Business to Business Expo, two golf outings, Joint Events with other Chambers – Allegheny Valley, Grove City, Mercer and Lawrence Counties, Meadville – Crawford County, Zelienople-Harmony Area, Armstrong and Venango Counties, Oil City, Franklin and THE CHAMBER, Inc. Our affiliate, Slippery Rock Business Association will be sponsoring Village Fest and Heritage Day on Sept. 15.

We maintain a vibrant and growing Young Professionals group, featuring Night golf on Oct. 5 and many past joint ventures with Cranberry Township, Young Engineers in Nuclear, Rick Management Association, Pittsburgh Social Network and Pittsburgh Women in Business. We continue to offer our Sandler sales training sessions to provide the maximum in information and assistance to our membership.

One of our proudest committees, the Past Presidents Advisory Council, remains strong. I encourage you all to read the Business Matters September issue where the chamber of the 60’s -70’s was highlighted, soon to be followed by the October issue which will highlight the 80’s-90’s, and November will round out the 2000’s. There is so much more that our Chamber provides, and I would like to thank all of you who support our Chamber and thanks to those that sponsored tonight’s Celebration.

Member News

O ne of the greatest gifts that can be given to anyone or any organization is a gift in emergency situations. Since 1997, the Butler AM Rotary Club has been raising funds so that needy recipients

can be served during their “darkest” days.

The Butler AM Rotary Club’s latest fundraiser is a “doozy”. It’s an adult spelling bee or “spelldown”, a contest in which one is eliminated if one fails to spell a word correctly. The Bee will be held October 25th at the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora. Dinner is scheduled for the Teams at 5:30 p.m. and the spelling bee will begin at 6:30 p.m. Teams of four members can enter by contributing $125 per person. The cost includes dinner for each team member and a guest so spellers can bring their own cheering section. If you cannot form a Team, sponsorships are also available to support this function. For a donation of $7 per person, the public is also invited to cheer on their favorite team. Refreshments for everyone will be available from the Legion.

Teams of four are already forming, Musko said. Musko remembers his own spelling bee experience in Lyndora grammar school many years ago! “Let’s just say I didn’t win”, he said.

A day of beer and barbeque is on tap as The Butler Media Group presents

Brew-B-Que on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the North Washington Volunteer Fire Department

Social Hall. Local and regional microbreweries will be serving samples to drinkers, as well as beer braised mushrooms, beer cheese and even baked goods flavored with beer! Hot dogs, burgers, barbeque and pretzels will be available to complement your brew, along with live music from the Noble Hops band, a corn hole tournament, silent auction, door prizes and lots of vendors for you to feast your beer-glazed eyes on!

Drinkers can choose between two sessions, 2-5 p.m. or 6-9 p.m., both at the North

Washington VFD Social Hall on Route 38. Non-drinkers are invited and encouraged to attend, and can take advantage of a discounted ticket price! A full ticket price is $15 presale and $20 at the door. Designated Driver tickets are $10 presale and $12 the day of the event.

Brew-B-Que proceeds will benefit the North Washington VFD and the Butler County Food Cupboards through the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The food cupboards of St. Vincent DePaul recently lost their peanut butter supplier which has led to a depleted supply of peanut butter in their local food cupboards. Project Peanut Butter was established by The Butler Media Group to help our own neighbors get the food they need. All patrons who bring a non-perishable food item (peanut butter or canned good) to Brew-B-Que will be entered into a special door prize drawing.

C alifornia University of Pennsylvania’s Government Agency Coordination Office (GACO) is sponsoring the 25th Annual Procurement Opportunities Fair from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 24, 2012. The fair will be held at the DoubleTree in Washington, PA.

Any business interested in selling their products or services to federal, state and local government agencies and prime contractors should attend. Focused on providing companies with contracting and subcontracting information, the fair will feature

70 booths occupied by government agencies, corporations, regional service organizations and area businesses. Lifesteps’ Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group is a FREE community service that meets monthly to assist families as they handle the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. The group provides opportunities for socialization, education, and information-sharing. BButler Memorial Hospital Recognized

For Quality Stroke Careutler Memorial Hospital was recently recognized with a Silver Plus designation for its ongoing excel-lence in treating stroke patients using the Ameri-can Heart Association’s “Get with The Guidelines

program.”

GWTG is a hospital based quality-improvement program designed to ensure that hospitals consistently care for stroke patients following the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations. The program provides three modules that address coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke. Currently more than 2,000 hos-pitals use one or more GWTG modules. The Pennsylvania Department of Health recognizes this achievement and has designated BMH as a Primary Stroke Center.

“We are proud that the American Heart Associa-tion and the Pennsylvania Department of Health have chosen to recognize BMH for our achievements in their Get With The Guidelines program,” says Ken DeFurio, president & CEO of Butler Health System. “Get With The Guidelines gives our professionals the tools and reports they need to effectively treat our coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke patients.”

he Butler County Symphony Orchestra will open its 64th season on October 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the Butler Intermediate High School Auditorium, 551 Fairground Hill Road in Butler. The theme for the

season is “Inspirations,” and this concert is focused on “Italia.” New conductor and musical director Matthew Kraemer makes his debut.

Recognized for his “musical sensitivity” and “energized sense of interpretation”, conductor Matthew Kraemer is quickly gaining notice for his inspired performances and innovative programming. Ron McKissick, president of the Butler County Symphony Association, says “we are looking forward to Mr. Kraemer’s appearance with our orchestra, and we are confident he will bring this same enthusiasm to our area. I believe our audience will be pleased with our choice of new conductor.”

The concert will open with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture. Other selections include Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Tchaikovsky’s Cappriccio Italien, Puccini’s Preludio Sinfonico and Pines of Rome by Respighi.

Reserved seat tickets for this concert can be purchased at the Butler County Symphony Association office, 259 S. Main Street, Butler. Adult ticket prices are $18 in advance and $20 at the door on concert night. Student tickets are $5. T here was electricity in the air on September 12, 2012 at the Robert M. Smith Student Center on the campus of Slippery Rock University, when a capacity crowd of member businesses gathered

at a new venue to honor our Chamber and two Butler County Businesses for achievements deserving of recognition. As a special treat, attendees were provided a sampling of Slippery Rock’s own micro brews courtesy of North Country Brewing Company. The evening began with a beautiful commentary by Slippery Rock University President, and our host for the evening, Dr. Cheryl Norton reflecting on the similarities of our two organizations.

Presenting the William A. Morgan, Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year 2012 award was 2011 award winner Tom Graham of Frames & Pixels, Inc. Tom noted the many accomplishments of Butler County entrepreneurs as he presented Bob McCafferty, North Country Brewing Company, with the award. Bob graciously accepted this honor, thanking his family and employees who contributed to his success.

Cathy Glasgow, owner of Butler County Ford and last year’s Chamber Business Champion Award Recipient presented the 2012 Chamber Champion Award to Sherry Kyne, The Atrium and Eisler Landscapes, Inc. Sherry graciously thanked her family and employees for contributing to their success, while reflecting on the core values of volunteerism and community service instilled in her by her grandfather and founder of the company. A certificate custom designed by 4-Most Architects, Inc. was presented.

Board Chair Joe Taylor mentioned some of the many accomplishments during his term and the diversity of activities and outreach that our chamber has achieved. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Past Chair Dr. Nick Neupauer for his service and dedication to our Chamber. It was a perfect evening, as the photos depict, celebrating our past achievements, connecting with those present and recognizing their achievements and providing a brief glimpse into our bright and progressive future.

T he “Welcome Program,” is a business counseling initiative and partnership between Huntington Bank, Seton Hill University’s E-Magnify women’s business center and the Butler County Chamber

of Commerce. This program offers a team counseling session to women business owners in Butler County. Invitees will meet with an E-Magnify business counselor, a Business Banker, and a representative of the Chamber to discuss opportunities for business growth through immediate business advice and connection to business resources throughout the area.

There is no charge for the counseling program and can be held at the Chamber offices or at the owner’s place of businesses, whichever is preferred. Once identified, the businesses will receive a letter of invitation to participate. E-Magnify will also provide a list of preparation questions for the business owner to consider prior to her visit so that the most can be gained by the session.

Following the session with the businesses, the partners will meet to discuss what was learned about the business owners’ needs and if there are any additional resources (educational workshops, etc.) that should be brought to the area. The Board of Directors feels that this program is a great value for Chamber members as well as a potential recruitment tool. W hat better way to end the summer than on the patio of SiBA Restaurant in Seven Fields, enjoying hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, listening to the sounds of “Etta James”

and viewing a mini art exhibit and demonstration by chamber member Eileen Stroup (of mural and Jeep sculpture fame). Over 100 area businesses networked and socialized during our final summer mixer sponsored by C. W. Howard Insurance Agency, Moses Jewelers and Consolidated Communications. Guests had the chance to visit Moses Jewelers Seven Fields location and try to resist the tempting merchandise as well as win prizes donated by the sponsors.

Members then had the opportunity on September 10, to network with over 200 other regional professionals as we hosted a “Send off to Summer” social at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in Warrendale along with the Pittsburgh Social Network and Pittsburgh Women in Business. Hors d’oeuvres were provided by Jergel’s, but the high energy ambiance was courtesy of the many attendees. Our chamber continues to provide a wide variety of networking opportunities regionally and locally to promote our members.

As you can see from the photos, there could not have been two more perfect ways to top off the summer.

with a two day educational and team building session at Conley Resort, including a “get to know the class”
