BACKGROUNDDuring the summer of 1998, Jake “Body By Jake” Steinfeld was inspired to start a professional outdoor lacrosse league after

reading a magazine article about the growth of the sport of lacrosse. Steinfeld sought out a contributor to the article, Dave Morrow, Owner and President of Warrior Lacrosse, a leading lacrosse equipment manufacturer, to discuss formation of such a league.

In February 1999 Steinfeld and Morrow joined forces with Steinfeld’s friend and business associate Tim Robertson, Chairman of Bay Shore Enterprises and former CEO of the Family Channel, to form Major League Lacrosse, LLC, a Virginia limited liability company. In 2003, New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. came on board as a Founding Member of Major League Lacrosse, as well as an Anchor Level League Sponsor.

Major League Lacrosse began play in 2001, to capitalize on the growing demand for world-class field lacrosse driven by dramatic growth in the U.S. lacrosse market. The MLL was praised and heralded for its on-field play, regarded as the best ever seen. With a year-on-year attendance increase, Major League Lacrosse has continued to lead the sport of lacrosse into the mainstream of competitive team sports.

OUR TEAMSThe MLL is comprised of eight teams across the US and Canada. The Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, and Chespeake

Bayhawks (formerly Baltimore and Washington) have been members of the League since its inception in 2001. The Denver Outlaws began play in 2006 as part of the League’s western expansion. The Hamilton Nationals (formerly Toronto) joined the MLL in 2009 as the League’s first international team. The Charlotte Hounds and Ohio Machine will begin play in 2012 as a part of the league’s expansion initiative to have 16 teams in the next decade. Current teams include:Boston CannonsCharlotte HoundsChesapeake BayhawksDenver OutlawsHamilton NationalsLong Island LizardsOhio MachineRochester Rattlers

OUR PLAYERSThe 230 best lacrosse players in the world-well-spoken, articulate young men from some of the top academic institutions, including

Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Duke, and Virginia. MLL icons include Ryan Boyle, Jesse Hubbard, John Grant Jr., and Brodie Merrill. The League also features current stars in lacrosse such as Paul Rabil, Max Seibald, and Matt Danowski.

OUR SEASONThe 2012 Major League Lacrosse season will consist of a total of 56 regular season games running from April to August with the

following league-run special events – Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft (January), All-Star Game (June), and Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend (August). The twelfth season of MLL action is slated to begin April 28, 2012. In January 2011, the league announced not only its expansion plans, but that it would add two regular season games in 2012. Each team is now slated to play 14 games in the regular season.

OUR GAMEMajor League Lacrosse has implemented some innovative dynamics to the traditional game field lacrosse that bring the sport into

the next millennium. MLL rule changes include the addition of a two-point goal line located 16 yards from each goal and a 60-sec-ond shot clock. In 2009 Major League Lacrosse allowed a fourth long-pole defenseman. This move brought MLL rules more in-line with those at the high school and collegiate levels, where a fourth pole is allowed. This addition assisted in creating closer games by helping to generate a more balanced game at the professional level.

SPONSORSHIPA full range of integrated sponsorship packages are available. Partnerships can include league/team category exclusivity, special

events rights, corporate branding on player uniforms, national TV commercial units and in-game TV features, field signage, SLASH Magazine ads, web site banners, tickets/hospitality, game footage, photo usages, player appearances, customized activation, and cross-promotional programs.

TELEVISIONESPN2 has been the national television home of Major League Lacrosse since 2003, when the two parties agreed on a two-

year commitment. In 2004, ESPN aired the New Balance Championship Game, making it the first live national telecast of a Major League Lacrosse competition. Today, MLL and ESPN’s relationship is the longest commitment that any television outlet has given to a lacrosse entitiy.

The partnership between the MLL and ESPN continued to grow when on June 9, 2007, ESPN360.com, ESPN’s signature broad-band network, streamed its first MLL game live from Sports Authority Field at Mile High. ESPN360.com went on to stream 5 more MLL events that season. In 2008, all 64 MLL games, including the All-Star game, both, Semi-Finals, and the NB ZIP MLL Champion-ship Game were streamed live on ESPN360.com. After airing live, the games were archived on the website for a period of one week.

In 2008, MLL licensed its broadcast and digital media rights to Lax United Marketing (LUM). The license is for five (5) years with LUM having two additional five (5) year options. The 2008 season also marked the first time in League history that every regular season MLL game was broadcast live on regional sports networks throughout the country. Lax United Marketing syndicated every game not available on ESPN2, including the second MLL Semi-Final from Boston to top regional sports networks such as Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports Net, Cox Sports, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Brighthouse, Charter Sports and CN8.

In 2010, ESPN2 aired a total of 6 MLL games, including live broadcasts of the All-Star Game (July 8) from Boston, as well as the first Semi-Final game (August 21) and the MLL Championship Game presented by Warrior (August 22) from Annapolis.

In 2011, all 36 regular season games in addition to the 2011 Sports Authority MLL All-Star Game (July 9) and the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior (August 27 and 28), were broadcast in syndication. Every MLL game was streamed live on ESPN3.com in HD, and a total of six MLL games including the All-Star Game and the Championship Weekend were broadcast live on ESPN2.

Most recently, MLL negotiated a major television agreement with CBS Sports Network. In 2012, 14 games will be aired live in HD on CBS along with 18 episodes of “Inside the MLL”, the league’s 30-minute magazine style show. In addition to six games that will be aired live on ESPN2, this will bring the number of nationally televised games to 20 in 2012.

CURT STYRES Owner

Hamilton Nationals Owner Curt Styres has established him-self as a builder and a supporter of lacrosse in Six Nations, and throughout Canada and the United States for decades. Styres is in his fourth season as the owner of the Nationals.

Styres has become accustomed to building winning products and franchises. He began his first business back in 1991, as he owned a gas station and variety store. From there, he went on to become a founding partner in Grand River Enterprises in 1993. He then built the Ohsweken Speedway and has turned it into the fastest-growing speedway in Canada.

In 1998, he began scouting for the Six Nations Arrows la-crosse team. In 2004, Curt partnered with the Arrows and took the team to the Ontario Championship four straight years (2004-07), winning the 2007 Minto Cup (Canadian Junior Lacrosse Championship). It doesn’t stop there. In 2004, he also built the 3,000-seat Iroquois Lacrosse Arena to give local kids a place to improve their skills and it has led to one of the strongest youth programs across Canada. In fact, the Junior B’s won the 2011 Founders Cup.

Further, Styres began the “Dreamcatcher Fund” that same year to aid native youth in education and athletics. Over 6,000 people

have been helped by the fund with 100,000 applicants coming in each year, which included Knighthawks and 2010 No. 1 overall pick Cody Jamieson, and fellow Knighthawks Craig Point and Sid Smith. He also built a school for kindergarten through 12th grade in the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. In 2008, he achieved one of his lifelong dreams and became the owner of not one, but two professional sports franchises with the purchasing of the Amerks and Knighthawks. In 2009, he added to his professional sports ledger by helping start the Major League Lacrosse Toronto Na-tionals. That investment paid instant dividends as the Nationals won the MLL Championship in the first year of their existence.

Currently, Grand River Enterprises is the largest native owned company in Canada. It’s the No. 1 exporter in Canada in its field and the seventh largest in North America.

In the summer of 2011, Styres rebuilt the Nationals, which be-gan with moving the team to Hamilton. Through the draft and key acquisitions, the Nats finished in a second-place tie with the Denver Outlaws and tied their franchise record with seven wins. The Nationals experienced the greatest turnaround over the past two seasons, going from three wins in 2010 and a last-place fin-ish to a 7-5 team and a return to the MLL Championship Game.

2012 HAMILTON NATIONALS LACROSSE Media Guide

In 2009, his first-year team brought a Major League Lacrosse championship to Toronto.

Styres has been heavily involved at growing the sport of la-crosse at the youth level, as well. In October 2011, Styres and Nick Skye coached the Six Nations Express U13A team to a berth in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions Tournament in late December, which was followed by a champi-onship at the Junior Turkeyshoot in Ithaca, NY, and an automatic bid for the seventh/eighth grade team. Furthermore, he guided Six Nations to a title shot at the Pee Wee Ontario Provincial Box Lacrosse Championship Game in August. Additionally, Styres was on the coaching staff for the Iroquois Team that advanced to the finals of the 2011 Warrior Pee Wee Lacrosse National Cham-pionship of Canada in early August.

In 2011, Styres partnered with Paul Gait to create Team 22 In-novation, under the Under Armour banner, which designs, man-ufactures and distributes lacrosse equipment. Under Armour stands as a world-wide developer, marketer, and distributor of branded performance apparel, footwear, and accessories. His latest venture had been in the works for the past eight years. That dream took center stage at the 2011 Men’s Lacrosse Final Four in Baltimore, Md. From an airplane towing an Under Armour banner to a large transport trailer showcasing the new lacrosse heads and shafts, Under Armour made a splash at the Final Four. At college’s biggest weekend, Team 22 unveiled its Under Armour line of men’s and women’s heads and shafts. Fans can check out the latest Under Armour lacrosse equipment at www.underarmour.com.

Styres has also transformed the National Lacrosse League’s Rochester Knighthawks over the past four seasons, serving as the owner team’s general manager. In 2011, he rebuilt the Knighthawks into a playoff team and was rewarded with the NLL’s Executive of the Year and General Manager of the Year, which was an NLL first. In 2012, his hard work paid off with the NLL Champion’s Cup.

The Knighthawks have made strides in the standings and in the community. The Knighthawks have advanced to the playoffs in three of his four seasons (2009 and 2011-12). Off the field, Styres established the Knighthawks Charitable Foundation, Inc. that has donated over $300,000 to local charities in four years. Over the past two seasons, he has also supported ROC E6 La-crosse through player participation and financial commitments to help spread lacrosse throughout Monroe County. His reason, “To create lacrosse fans you have to create lacrosse players.”

He expanded his efforts to grow the game by providing equip-

ment and monetary resources to the National Lacrosse League’s partnership with Right To Play. Throughout First Nations com-munities in Ontario, NLL players will help deliver skill-based in-struction to children, youth and coaches. In addition, this pro-gram will inspire and motivate First Nation children and youth to connect to the strong culture and tradition of Lacrosse. This program has the potential to impact over 500 children and youth in First Nations in its first year (2012), and inspire a lifelong com-mitment to lacrosse.

As the leading international humanitarian and development or-ganization, Right To Play uses the transformative power of sport and play to build essential life skills in children, thereby driving social change in communities worldwide affected by war, pov-erty and disease.

From his seat as the team’s general manager, Styres has cre-ated more fans through his deals this offseason. In 2010, he and his lacrosse staff drafted and acquired some of the most exciting players in the NLL. Styres drafted Jamieson with the No. 1 overall pick and Jarrett Davis with the fifth overall selec-tion. The Knighthawks also acquired 2010 NLL Goalie of the Year Matt Vinc, along with NLL transition star Jordan Hall, and signed free agent Mike Accursi, who helped the Knighthawks win the 2007 NLL Championship. He also signed free agent and former Knighthawk Pat McCready. The team finished 10-6 and in a three-way tie for first in the East Division.

The Knighthawks advanced to the opening round of the playoffs and were honored by their peers in the NLL year-end awards. Vinc was named the NLL Goaltender of the Year, while McCready took home the Defensive Player of the Year. Hall was honored with the league’s Sportsmanship Award and Mike Hasen became the first rookie bench boss to win Head Coach of the Year. Additionally, Jamieson was honored with an All-Rookie Team selection. The Knighthawks were active in the offseason in promotions with NASCAR legend Tony Stewart racing the Knighthawks car in the Empire Sprint Series in August 2011 and winning his heat at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

In 2012, the awards continued to roll in for the Knighthawks as 19-year-old Johnny Powless won the NLL Sportsmanship Award and earned a place on the All-Rookie Team. Stephen Keogh also earned All-Rookie Team status, while Jamieson was named a Second Team All-Pro and the Championship Game MVP.

While his interests may be vast, his mission in 2012 is to bring a championship to Hamilton.

JODY GAGE General Manager

The last time Jody Gage was an MLL lacrosse general man-ager, his team won a championship. In 2011, Gage returned to a familiar place with the Hamilton Nationals of Major League Lacrosse: MLL Championship Weekend.

In 2011, he returned to the field game as the general manager of the Major League Lacrosse Hamilton Nationals. Through the “best draft class in MLL history,” free agent signings and trades, the Nats finished in a tie for second place with a 7-5 record. In 2011, the Nats finished in a tie for second place with a 7-5 record and earned their second playoff berth in three seasons. Hamilton advanced to the championship game, falling by one goal to the Boston Cannons.

Gage’s first stint in the MLL was with Rochester Rattlers. In seven seasons, the Rattlers also advanced to the MLL Semi-finals in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2007, and captured the 2008 Steinfeld Cup.

After being out of the sport for the 2009 season, Gage rejoined the Nationals and the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, which is also owned by Curt Styres. He joined a Hamilton franchise, which included some of the same players that won the 2008 title. The list of players includes John Grant Jr., Jordan Hall, Brett Bucktooth, Brett Queener, Gavin Prout and Brodie Merrill. The Nationals won the 2009 championship, but missed the playoffs in 2010.

Gage holds a place of distinction in the pantheon of Roches-ter sports. The North York, Ontario, native is the only person to grace the Hall of Fames for two Rochester professional sports teams: the Knighthawks and the Rochester Americans. Gage served as the general manager for 12 seasons and built the Knighthawks into a lacrosse dynasty (1997-2008). The Knight-hawks advanced to five championship games and won two titles during his tenure. In 2007, he assembled a Knighthawks team that won a league record 17 games and suffered only two loss-es. He currently serves as the VP of Player Personnel and is in the process of helping another former championship return to the postseason.

He had a hand in drafting current superstars John Grant, Casey Powell, Curt Malawsky, Josh Sanderson and Colin Doyle. He also was a masterful GM when it came to trades, acquiring such notable players as Mike Accursi, Chris Schiller, Steve Toll and Shawn Williams during his tenure.

Gage officially rejoined the Rochester Knighthawks manage-ment team on September 29, 2010, as the Vice President of Player Personnel. In this position, he will work closely with GM Curt Styres and Assistant GM Landon Miller. Gage will be ac-

tively involved in, and have input into the day-to-day decision making for the Knighthawks team. He will also take on the re-sponsibility of being the key point of contact for the Knighthawks on all team business matters in Rochester.

Gage was inducted into the Amerks Hall of Fame in 1999 and is only one of three players to have his number retired. He stands as the Amerks’ all-time leader in games played, goals, assists and points. He also holds numerous team and American Hockey League records. He was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2006. After retiring from hockey, he moved into the front office where he still works for the Amerks as the Director of Player Personnel. He was the team’s general manager from 1996 to 2009 and was the assistant GM when the Amerks won their sixth Calder Cup in 1996.

REGY THORPE Head Coach

Regy Thorpe completed his first season as a Major League Lacrosse head coach in 2011 by guiding the Hamilton Nationals to a second-place finish and a berth in the playoffs. Hamilton advanced to the championship game, falling by one goal to the Boston Cannons.

Thorpe returned to the MLL for the first time since the 2008 season when he helped the Rochester Rattlers win the 2008 Steinfeld Cup. Thorpe spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Rattlers, which included a stint as a player/as-sistant coach during the 2006 season. He also played for Roch-ester for six seasons (2001-06). The job with the Nationals is his first professional head coaching job.

Thorpe has an extensive playing and coaching background. Thorpe coached the Junior “A” Six Nations Arrows for three sea-sons. In his first season, the Arrows won the 2007 Minto Cup, which is the national junior championship in Canada. In 2009, he led the Arrows to the OLA Junior “A” Finals. He is currently in his second season as the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Co-ordinator at Syracuse University, where he works under lacrosse icon Gary Gait. Gait and Thorpe have worked together for three seasons at Syracuse and in 2012 guided the women’s team to the NCAA Finals.

Thorpe spent 15 seasons with the National Lacrosse League’s Rochester Knighthawks and in 2008 became the first player to also serve as a team’s general manager. It’s on the field, how-ever, where Thorpe made a name for himself that placed him among the greatest names in National Lacrosse League history.

What’s more impressive is that the Elbridge, NY, native spent his entire career in Rochester, where he stands as the team’s all-time leader in games played (193), loose balls (966) and penalty minutes (385). Thorpe also played in every postseason game in franchise history (23), guiding Rochester to six title games and 13 playoff berths in 14 seasons. More importantly, Thorpe is the only player in team history to play for both championship teams: 1997 and 2007.

The defensive stalwart was also the team captain in 2008 and served as an alternate captain from 2005 to 2007. He also wore the “C” after Mike Hasen was injured in 2007 and captained Rochester to its second championship. Thorpe also won nu-merous team and individual accolades along the way, winning the team’s Unsung Hero three times and earning the Connors & Ferris Comeback Player of the Year twice. In 2005, he was also named to the Knighthawks’ All-Time Team.

Thorpe arrived in Rochester in 1994 after playing his college lacrosse at nearby Syracuse University (1992-93). He was one of the co-captains on the 1993 team that captured the Division I National Championship. That season, he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.

JASON JOHNSON Assistant Coach

Jason Johnson is in his fifth season with the Nationals orga-nization and is fresh off a National Lacrosse League title with the Rochester Knighthawks. The Six Nations native had a busy summer in 2011 both on and off the field. At the professional level, he helped the Knighthawks return to the Champion’s Cup Playoffs in May and then moved on to begin his role as an as-sistant coach with the Hamilton Nationals.

The Nats, like the Knighthawks, finished near the top of their league and advanced to the postseason. The Nationals went all the way to the MLL Finals. Johnson has been with the team since its inaugural season in 2009, when he served as an assis-tant coach with the Major League Lacrosse championship team.
