ach year theF l o w e r t o w nFestival Runattracts runnersfrom both near andfar.
Started years agoby Dr. Bob Randall
and Doug McElveen, the event has grown tobecome a signature fundraiser for the SummervilleYMCA and the kick-off event for the festival.
Held during the weeks leading up to other festivalevents, it features a 5K run, 10K run and one-milefun run. This year more than 900 participants reg-istered for the event.
“Since I moved back to town a few years ago,I’ve run the race every year,” Christine Wells said.“Historic Summerville is a great place to live andthe perfect place for a race. Plus it supports the
YMCA, which really brings our communitytogether.”
Participants work their way through scenic andhistoric streets, many aligned withSummerville’s famous Azaleas. Some yearsmore than 1,000 participate, but the event stillhas a much quainter feel than some of theregion’s other well-know races.
The course is relatively fast and the field typi-cally very competitive. Awards are given in sev-eral age divisions. High school runners are eligi-
ble to win a team award and free laptop comput-er, courtesy of McElveen Buick Chevy GMC.
However, the event is also perfect for those justwanting to get out and enjoy South Carolina’smoderate March weather.
Registration for the Flowertown Run/Walktypically opens in early March through the Y’swebsite, www.summervilleymca.org. Foradditional information about the YMCAor theFlowertown Run/Walk, call 843-871-9622,extension 103.

Chelsea recently won an onlinecompetition sponsored by the pro-motional website TopBlip.com thatlanded her a gig in Winston-Salem,N.C. opening for national rock androll act Parachute.
Now a sophomore at PinewoodPreparatory School, Chelsea startedteaching herself to play guitar viaYouTube when she was 13. Duringthe summer of 2011 Chelsea was oneof 50 students-of-all ages acceptedinto the Nashville Songwriter’sAssociation International AdvancedSongwriter’s Camp. Thus far, shehas written more than 20 songs.
Although she is young, Chelseastays busy, performing at a numberof local venues including theIcehouse Restaurant, Single SmileCafé, Firewater Grille and MadraRua Irish Pub.
One of the most interesting andunique performances of the day willundoubtedly come from the Joe PyeElementary School African Drumand Dance Ensemble. This group,
now in its first year, has alreadymade a splash in the area, turning inexciting performances for suchevents as the grand opening of theBoeing plant and the dedication of itsnamesake school. The group willperform from 1:30-2:30 p.m.Saturday.
Eddie Bush, a premiere talent longknown around Summerville and theLowcountry, rounds out the weekendwith his soaring vocals, fiery guitarwork, and deeply introspective song-writing. Bush has enjoyed a busy, successful career as a performer, as awriter, and as a teacher. He has per-formed in places most people onlydream of with artists we usually onlysee in record stores and on television. He has recorded a large body ofwork and was signed to a majorrecord label, Decca, in 2006. He hasworked hard in a number of charita-ble efforts, most recently endowing ascholarship at the Charleston Schoolof Law in memory of his brother,Alex Bush, a very popular and well-regarded student at the school whodied in a tragic car accident in 2010.

veryone’s heardof peanut butterbrittle. But haveyou ever had softpeanut butter brit-tle?
It’s a bit of anoxymoron, agreesM e l i s s aDiedricks, who
personally makes every batch of soft peanutbutter brittle for her company, AmbrosiaCandies, using her great-grandmother’s recipe.
Diedricks said the best way she can describethe gourmet candy is that it has more of a flakyconsistency.
Diedricks learned the recipe from her grand-mother, who used to sell it at craft shows onthe West Coast.
For years, though, Deidricks made the candyjust for family and friends and holiday events. The smell wafting through her kitchen wouldremind her of her grandmother, she said.
People always told her she should sell it, and
in October 2010 “we took a leap of faith andreally jumped into it.”
At first Diedricks operated a kiosk at a mallin Florida where she lives, but the responsewas so good that she had a hard time keepingup as a one-woman operation, with occasionalhelp from her sister.
She and her husband decided to scale backand only sell at craft shows so that she couldmaintain quality, she said.
This will be her first year at the FlowertownFestival, which she learned about from a goodfriend who also sells at shows.
“I’m super excited to actually be part of itthis year,” she said.
In addition to the original soft peanut butterbrittle, Diedricks makes variations that aredipped in chocolate, M&Ms, and various nuts. She also has a black and white version that’sdipped in white chocolate and milk chocolate.
Diedricks said the black and whites sellsingly for $1. People can buy half-pound bagsof the original candy for $6, or two bags for$11.
Ambrosia Candies is online at www.face-book.com/ambrosiacandies and www.twitter.com/ambrosiacandies.

Take home a pieceof old Charleston

rom teacherto marinebiologist toa r t i s t .That’s beenA m a n d aMcLenon’spath, anddespite thetwists and
turns, it all leads back to her grandfather. McLenon will be coming to the
Flowertown Festival this year to formal-ly introduce her latest creations,Charleston Piazza Doors.
Like all her art, the doors are derivedfrom recycled and “upcycled” materials. In this case, she uses wood, generallyflooring or walls, from old Charlestonhomes that are being torn down or reno-
vated. She maintains the existing paint and
adds antique hardware that she finds atestate sales, antique stores and occasion-ally from the homes themselves.
“It’s very rare that some of these hous-es come down and they’re even remov-ing the hardware,” she said.
The piazza doors follow McLenon’sforay into painting, which she has doneas murals or on antique window sashes.
McLenon first picked up a brush threeyears ago. Before that she had been ateacher and had earned a master’sdegree in education, then came toCharleston to study marine biology.
She decided to create a painting as agift and it came out better than sheexpected, she said.
Other people started asking about herpaintings and before she knew it, shewas a full-fledged artist.
“It was really cool to discover a talent
I didn’t know I had,” she said. McLenon said her piazza doors cre-
ation harkens back to her childhood andher grandfather. A “true tinkerer,” hewould go to the flea market everySaturday to buy treasures and thenreconstruct items like white-walledbicycles.
McLenon became a collector like hergrandfather and had an “epiphany” oneday that led to the piazza doors.
McLenon regularly shows her work atevents like the Charleston FarmersMarket and at locations like theCharleston Preservation Society and theCharleston Angler shops.
She’ll be at the Flowertown Festivalwith the piazza doors as well as herpaintings. Prices for the piazza doorsstart at $28.
Her booth will be CP8, in the middleof the park to the left of the tenniscourts.

Lifepoint raising awarenessfor organ donors
BY STEFAN ROGENMOSERThe Journal Scene
he state’se n t i r eo r g a nd o n o rregistryw a swiped outin 2008.That’s then e w s
LifePoint, Inc. Organ & Tissue DonationServices for South Carolina MediaRelations Coordinator Mark Johnson isspreading to get organ donors registered.
This year is the first time LifePoint, anon-profit based in Charleston since1984, has a booth at Flowertown Festival.
The federally mandated LifePoint han-dles all donations of organs, tissues andeyes across the state.
Many S.C. Driver’s Licenses haveorgan donor hearts on them, but those are
only valid for people who’ve been to theDMV since December 2008, Johnsonsaid.
“One thing people don’t understand isthat if they haven’t been to the DMVsince December ‘08 they aren’t actuallya registered donor. The people whohave a heart on license before that can-not be grandfathered in.”
“There wasn’t the ability or mandate tohave registry prior to then. The registrywas lost in Dec. 2008. Since then peoplehave been registering to be donors.”
For those who haven’t been to theDMV in a few years or aren’t going any-time soon, Johnson recommends regis-tered at www.donatelifesc.org.
“We work with Donate Life SouthCarolina to increase awareness.”
The organization recovers tissue at thetime of death for people who becamedonors, Johnson said.
“We work to educate people about theconcept of tissue and organ donation. It’s obviously the first time we’re there.
With a large number of people going bythe organizer thought we’d be a goodfit. We’ll have flyers and people will haveinformation on how to sign up to be anorgan and tissue donor.”
He said they will also have informationon the S.C. Donor and Tissue Registry.
“One donor can save up to eight livesand improve the lives of 50 or morethrough tissue donation. The more peo-ple who signed up as donors, the morelives can be saved.
“Not everybody can be a donor, depending on their condition of death.Just because everyone is signing updoesn’t mean they can all be used.
“Over 113,000 people across the coun-try are waiting on a transplant right now. There are about 1,000 in S. C.”
Johnson said donations are importantand hopefully many more people willconsider becoming donors to save morelives. For more information visitLifePoint’s website at www.lifepoint-sc.org or find them on Facebook. Lifepoint: ‘One donor can save up to 8 lives.’

Umbrella, a travel agency that plans tripsof all varieties and keeps people frombeing overwhelmed by the endlessoptions presented on the Internet.
“People call me all the time who arecompletely overwhelmed with all that’sout there. I help people walk through dif-ferent types of properties.”
She’s run the business out of her DanielIsland home for four years. This year willbe the first time she has a booth at theFlowertown Festival.
“I basically plan travel but I don’t haveany service fees,” Fry said. “All of my
travel planning is complementary to myservice.
“I’m making sure they get the best dealpossible setting up their trip and makingsure everything goes smoothly.”
She says there is no upcharge with her.Fry plans honeymoons, cruises, desti-
nation weddings and a new type of tripcalled the “baby-moon.”
“It’s where the couple takes their lastbig trip before they add on one more totheir family.”
Despite a number of travel optionsavailable online, Fry says going throughan agent allows for a person connectionand ensuring that the traveler picks thebest resort for them.
Fry is able to tell clients more abouttheir trip before it happens and then canassist them once they’re on their way.
“I make sure everything is goingsmoothly for them and (give them) basi-cally anything they need while they’reaway. Most of the time I don’t have to doanything like that. I am an advocate forthem if there’s something they need.”
Fry said she makes sure to help her cus-
tomers find the best rates.“I really love to travel. I love helping
people find their perfect spot. I reallylove honeymoons and destination wed-dings. It’s such a special time in people’slives.”
The Caribbean is one of her favoriteplaces.
“I love the Caribbean. Basically any-where in the Caribbean makes me happy. It’s just a relaxed atmosphere. It’s great… gorgeous blue waters, sand. It’s a per-fect beach vacation.”
The best way to get there is to fly. “Each little airport is different. Most
airports in the Caribbean have aCaribbean band like steel drums or amariachi band. There are things like thatto welcome you. The minute you set footyou’re in vacation mode.”
Her booth will represent some of thecompanies and brands Fry represents. Two that will be shown at the booth areSandals, property for adults only andBeaches, for family friendly properties.

ere’s the secret toparking as closeas possible to theF l o w e r t o w nFestival this year:it’s not going tohappen.
After the policeand fire chiefsraised concerns
last year that they wouldn’t have been able tomaneuver emergency vehicles down the nar-row roads of the historic district because ofthe sheer number of cars parked helter-skelter,the town decided to restrict some areas fromparking.
But the good news is that the YMCA hasreached agreement with two property ownersto provide parking, and the YMCA is provid-ing a free shuttle to get people to the festival.
Parking will be available at the old HooverDodge dealership at 200 Old Trolley Roadand at Seacoast Church at 301 East 5th NorthStreet.
On Sunday, festival-goers can begin usingthe church parking at 1 p.m.
Donna Totten, marketing director for theYMCA, said free shuttles will run on an as-needed basis throughout the day.
Drivers can also take their chances in thedowntown area and other close-in neighbor-hoods, but the neighborhood directly adjacentto the festival will be closed to non-residentdrivers.
Lt. Bob Burris with the Summerville PoliceDepartment said the YMCA will have volun-teers manning barricades at Carolina Avenueand Congress Street; South Main andHampton streets; Sumter Avenue andHampton Street; and other strategic intersec-tions to prevent interlopers.

ome peoplejust can’t getenough of theF l o w e r t o w nFestival – andthat’s a goodthing.
For many, thelong-running,
family oriented weekend is a much lookedforward to rite of spring, a way to recon-nect with old friends and make new ones.
Mary Laughead, who grew up inSummerville but now lives in Lugoff, S.C.,brings her family every year. She said thefestival is an important and much lookedforward to weekend for her family and is agreat way to reconnect with her roots.
“It’s a very special event for us, Laugheadsaid. “We love coming every year, seeingthe same vendors, running into old friends. The weather is usually very nice and it’sreally neat to see what’s going on. The fes-
tival has really grown, and that’s got to bea great thing, economically, for the town.”
Interestingly enough, Laughead notedthat she had less exposure to the festival asa child growing up in Summerville thanshe does now.
“Growing up, we really didn’t get outinto it like we do now,” she said. “In fact,my husband, who did not grow up inSummerville, generally runs into morepeople he knows at the festival than I do.”
Nonetheless, Laughead says she and herfamily enthusiastically get into the doingsof the festival now.
“It’s always a good time for us,” shesaid. “The Y really does a great job ofmaking it a really pleasant experience.”
Vickie Moock and her husband haveattended every Flowertown Festival sincethey moved to Summerville in 1973.Long-time residents of the Iron Gate com-munity, the Moocks have a group offriends with whom they hit the festivalevery year.
Nonetheless, Moock does not appear tobe as enamored with some of the changes
that have occurred over the years. Thefestival was traditionally a celebration ofSummerville and a much more family ori-ented event than it seems to be now. Shealso says she is saddened by the loss ofsome of the long-time vendors, such asthe Kiwanis Club and its long-runningburger stand, and believes vendor spacesmay have simply become prohibitivelyexpensive for some of them.
“I don’t know; it seems to me that it’sbecome more about money than commu-nity,” she said. “To me, the festival is aSummerville thing, and I think in a waythey’re getting away from that.”
Nonetheless, Moock says she and herfriends don’t let bigger crowds and a fewunfamiliar faces turn them back. Theystill enjoy the festival and as long as therecontinues to be a festival and they can doit, they will continue to come and have agood time, she said.
“I come every year, rain or shine,” shesaid. “We walk through every year, seewhat’s new and who is there, go eatdowntown at the Continental Corner - -we have a really good time.”

Common history makes uncommon jewelry
BY LESLIE CANTUThe Journal Scene
A new ven-dor at theFlowertownFestival isoffering thechance towear a littlelocal historyaround yourneck.
Bryan Davis and his family operateCharleston Underground Civil War Relics, but the company has evolved beyond itsroots as a private excavation service.
Now the primary business is creatingunique pieces of jewelry – necklaces, ear-rings, bracelets and anklets – from pieces ofpottery and other unearthed relics.
The idea started 10 years ago whenDavis’s then-three-year-old daughterHannah wanted a necklace made of somepottery uncovered during a dig.
“When she picked up that piece of potteryand she said that, the light bulb went on,”
ADavis said.
In a place like Charleston, excava-tions uncover thousands of pieces ofcommon items like pottery andglass, Davis said. Once they’re cata-loged, there’s generally nothing todo but dump them back in theground where they came from.
The property owners don’t wantthem. Museums don’t want them –there’s only but so much space todisplay tableware or buttons or otherpieces of the past.
But with Hannah’s idea, suddenlythe unwanted “leftovers” becamethe centerpieces of one-of-a-kindadornments.
“When someone sees you wearingit, we want them to say, ‘What’sthat?’” he said.
Davis, who studied some archae-ology in college before ultimatelydeciding it wasn’t a practical career, likes the idea of reviving the historyunderneath our feet. Some peoplehave questioned the ethics of selling
off items of the past, but he saidselling such everyday items is com-mon and accepted. In fact, the jew-elry business helps subsidize freesite surveys and excavations ofsites like Summerville’s Old TownHall on West Carolina Avenue.
“We take the ethics behind it veryseriously because ultimately thegoal is to preserve the past. That isthe passion we have in doing thejewelry,” he said.
Although most of the jewelry is
from pottery shards, Davissometimes finds other objects thathe can preserve and transform.
For instance, a “hunk of rust” thesize of a tennis ball, when cleanedup with electrolysis, turned out tobe an old pocket watch.
At Simple to Sublime on ShortCentral Avenue, the onlySummerville shop carrying Davis’sjewelry, an intricate metal baubleturns out to be the clasp from aladies’ garter belt.
Davis also makes jewelry specificto other locations. A friend exca-vates in New Orleans, sends Davishis finds, and Davis returns them asjewelry to be sold in New Orleans.
For the Flowertown Festival,Davis is especially focused onoffering jewelry from Summervilleexcavations.
But if you miss him there, he hasalso begun appearing atSummerville DREAM’s ThirdThursday events.
