I took over as Executive Director of First Person Arts (FPA) in January 2012, just as the organization entered its second decade. My primary focus has been for FPA to remain relevant to the uniquely diverse Philadelphia community we serve.
FPA will continue to be relevant by being a listening organization, providing a platform where artists and non-artists alike can tell the compelling stories that must be told NOW.
To that end, when programming the Festival, we asked the arts community what was important to them through the First Person Arts RAW application process. Dozens of artists answered our call. We listened and responded with a Festival featuring the themes that they revealed in their work – themes of legacy, heritage, and family.
The following brochure showcases this unique Festival and the ways that you can become involved. Buy a ticket. Become a member. Share your story. We’re listening.

Long-time activists and friends – poet sonia sanchez,
musician bernice Johnson reagon, and folk/blues artist toshi reagon – perform on stage together for the first time. They will lead a stirring night of conversation, music, and poetry.
All three women have committed their lives to creating social change through art. What does it mean to be a female artist involved in social action? What lessons have our mothers passed down and what can our children teach? These questions and more will be pondered and pursued through the unique voices of Sonia, Bernice, and Toshi.
For tickets, bios, videos, and more, visit sonia.firstpersonarts.org.

sPecial events
As 2012 comes to a close, Philly artists come together to reflect upon and respond to the major events of the year. The presidential election, the death of Trayvon Martin, conflict in Syria, the fight for birth control, the debate over same-sex marriage, the Olympics, the (mis)predicted end of the world, and things that haven’t even happened yet are on the table for our artist reactions.
Using poetry, storytelling, live music, dance, and more, we’ll see powerful, original works created exclusively for Philly Reacts.
Artists include poet Jamie J. brunson, spoken word poet michelle myers and author august tarrier, with more to be announced.
We want your reaction, too! Audience members will be invited to share their own responses.
For an up-to-date lineup, artist bios, and to buy tickets, visit phillyreacts.firstpersonarts.org.

Food icon rick nichols celebrates Philadelphia’scandied history, focusing on its chocolatiers. For close to a century, Goobers, Raisinets, and Sno-Caps flowed from factories in Frankford. Wilbur made its Buds here long before the Kiss. And today new life is buzzing in the old Goldenberg Peanut Chew factory on Wyoming Street, in an Old City candy shop calledShane, and in a bean-to-bar artisan’s kitchen in ashuttered textile mill.
Come along and explore Nichols’ Candyland, its light (and dark) side, the story told with Nichols' own trademark wit and insider’s eye. Special guests include tegan hagy (LoveBar), michael holahan (PA General Store), and ryan berley (Shane Confectionery). And, of course, you’ll leave with a bag of sweets — old favorites, local heroes, and new confections from LoveBar, John & Kira’s, Lore’s, Shane’s, Eclat, and more.

Get to know the family of adam wade, storytelling’s sweetest geek. Seat yourself around the Wade family dinner table for an awkward conversation aboutAdam’s Playboy Magazine subscription. Sidle up to Adam in his mom’s bright purple car on Lovers’ Lane… with his grandmother and great-aunt in tow. Spanning a nerdy childhood, awkward adolescence, and collegiate mishaps, Adam’s new solo storytelling show reminds us of the joys and the headaches that only family can provide.
Visit adamwade.firstpersonarts.org for Adam’s bio, storytelling videos, tickets, and more. See page 28 for details about a storytelling workshop with Adam.

First Person Arts is at the cutting edge of new work
development through First Person arts raw.
RAW artists are emerging artists pushing the
boundaries of traditional memoir and documentary
storytelling by collaborating across disciplines or
delving deeper into their own form.
RAW offers a development process and a nurturing
creative environment with technical support,
rehearsal space, and workshop performances
leading up to each Festival premiere.
RAW is made possible thanks to individual and
foundation gifts made to the Vicki Solot Fund for
Creative Innovation and the Steven Julius
Emerging Artists Fund.
Inspired by her own life, writer amelia longo
embraces and races away from love in this witty
and insightful memoir performance piece about
her struggles with trust, truth, and expectations
in love. Ensemble members, including Barrymore-
nominated performer liz Filios (The Bearded
Ladies, Arden Theater Company), each tell different
versions of the same story through the unique
lens of Amelia’s conflicted feelings. In a world
of multiple truths, there is no one true story.
Directed by meghann williams.

The profound imagery of the noose becomes a portal towards understanding the African/Afro/Black experience, both its past and future. Inspired by their personal stories, memories, and dreams, six dancers explore their exposure to this country’s traumatic history of lynching and ask the question: what would it take for me to fall in love with the USA? This memoir of healing is told through intense movement, daring text, and jolting humor. Expect a dialogue-provoking night investigating heritage and home through dance.
A Flyground production. Performed by saroya corbett, lela aisha Jones, Peaches Jones, oiya lowe, maritza ogarro, and deneane richburg.
All ages are welcome for this event, but parental guidance is strongly suggested for children under the age of 18 due to mature content.

A man, a taxi cab, and a dream. Comedian sam dingman weaves personal tales with revealing audio recordings from
his days driving a New York City taxi. While dreaming of
finding fame and fortune as an actor, Sam actually spent
his days with toothless convicts, frozen embryos, and
murderous city buses. Along the way, he started recording
his (mis)adventures.
On stage, with a computer and a beer at his side, Sam plays
these random solo ruminations and conversations with
anonymous passengers. They accompany, interrupt, and
counter his stories, creating an intimate and imperfect
portrait of a person trying to find his way. Sam discovers
that no matter how many insane people or wild things he
encounters on the pothole-ridden streets of New York,
he may be the craziest one of all.
