Top Corolla Advantages Over Sentra

Sentra has been a stalwart in the compact-sedan market, although it has never reached the same popularity as Corolla. In an attempt to increase its appeal, Nissan offers Sentra in a dizzying array of six models, two engines and numerous packages. Seemingly, there is a Sentra for everyone, including the large-engine SE-R models. And yet Sentra still can’t match the success of Corolla. Its styling is modern, its choices are numerous, and its reputation is good, but something is missing—Toyota QDR and a product that consumers want.

Rather than offering a confusing array of models and features, Toyota builds Corolla the way most people want their compact sedan: efficient, well equipped, well assembled, and surprisingly refined. And that’s why more people choose Corolla than any other compact sedan.

This Edge points out some of the obvious advantages that Corolla has when compared with Sentra, but for many consumers it’s the invisible benefits of reputation, refinement, resale and value that win.

The Sentra is offered is a wide array of models, from the basic Sentra 2.0, all the way up to the high-performance Sentra SE-R, which adds a bigger and much more powerful 2.5-liter engine. The Sentra 2.0, 2.0 S, 2.0 SR and 2.0 SL are the closest Corolla competitors, and the model range is among the biggest in the compact-sedan market. But most customers choose the affordable Sentra 2.0 or 2.0 S models. SR, SL and especially SE-R models are expensive and hard to find.

Proven transmission

Corolla uses a traditional four-speed automatic with a proven track record. Sentra uses a belt-drive Xtronic® continuously variable transmission—a transmission that is now covered under an unusual retroactive extended warranty from Nissan. This suggests the transmission may not be performing up to typical Nissan standards.

Another great standard feature for Corolla LE is the USB connector, a plug that expands the number and type of devices that can interface with Corolla’s audio system. To get this feature on Sentra 2.0 S you have to purchase an extra-cost option package.

Lower curb weight

Don’t let the numbers fool you. Sentra has more horsepower, but it’s also lugging around almost 200 pounds of additional weight—like a pair of teenagers that never leave the back seat. This weight affects acceleration, braking and handling feel.

Dual VVT-i system

Variable valve timing helps the engine breath better—which helps reduce emissions and improve real-world fuel economy. Toyota goes further by allowing the intake valves to move independently from the exhaust valves, so the engine can “inhale” and “exhale” more precisely. Sentra can’t do this because it doesn’t have dual VVT-i.

It should be easier to tailor the Corolla to the driver because the steering wheel tilts and telescopes. Sentra’s wheel only tilts. Plus Corolla has heated sideview mirrors, a real convenience in the winter.

More leg room

Although Corolla is no bigger than Sentra on the outside, it has a notably bigger back seat when it comes to the critical measurement of leg room. Prospects will be surprised by Corolla’s big back seat.
