Top Corolla Advantages Over Civic

Corolla vs. Civic is one of the classic matchups of the automotive world. And there’s no denying the new-generation 2012 Civic is as tough a competitor as the outgoing model was. It’s one of the few cars with the reputation and credibility to make it an automatic “must see” for most shoppers in this segment.

But the 2012 Corolla is more than up to the challenge. Its combination of engineering features and value clearly set it apart from Civic. Corolla is still considered the gold standard, as this Edge makes clear.

Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.

PASSENGERS PAMPERED Civic buyers are forced to move up the model’s range to gain many of the comfort and convenience features that are standard on the popular Corolla LE.

Honda has an extensive range of Civic models, including a hybrid with Honda’s IMA system, a natural-gas version, a special high-fuel-economy version (Civic HF) and the sport-specialty Si. This Edge, however, focuses on the mainstream sedan grades that make up the majority of sales.

Savings at point of purchase

Toyota is very generous when it comes to loading up Corolla with standard features. For example, Corolla L includes air conditioning and an audio system. Civic DX doesn’t. Yet the MSRPs1 are about same or lower for Corolla’s three grades than for the corresponding Civic models.

 ADvANCED ENGiNEERiNG

Sophisticated DOHC engine

Most small engines today use a dual-overhead- cam design to help maximize efficiency and reduce emissions. However, Civic still uses a less-sophisticated single-overhead-cam design. And that means one camshaft is responsible for opening and closing all 16 valves. On Corolla, there is one camshaft assigned to the intake valves, and one to the exhaust valves—so one shaft isn’t doing all the work.

ToyotaCare and roadside assistance3

Corolla includes a complimentary two-year or 25,000-mile worry-free factory scheduled maintenance plan that Civic doesn’t offer. Plus Corolla buyers get the peace of mind that comes with roadside assistance for two years, with unlimited mileage.

Dual VVT-i

Honda likes to tout its i-VTEC engine’s variable valve timing. But Honda adjusts for intake efficiency only. Toyota’s Dual VVT-i does it better by independently optimizing both intake and exhaust valve timing for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

a best seller

In 2011 Corolla was the best-selling subcompact in the United States for the ninth year in a row. Maybe that’s because Corolla just seems so right to so many people with so many different needs.

Corolla boasts larger brakes all around compared with Civic. Larger brakes may have to work less, and heat up less, than the smaller brakes on Civic. That combination may contribute to more consistent braking performance.
