Dear dad,Talk about a sports crazy area. When the schools from Brooklyn, Malcom and Guernsey combined to form BGM Community Schools, areas that already loved their sports have gone crazy for their Bears, the nickname for the high school. The BGM Bears have built a good reputation among the area communities and even against their opponents.

Sis,Wow! Could you believe that Ronald McDonald was at the BGM Elementary School to help students recognize that they were all stars and that they could do anything if they set their minds on it. What a great message for a great community.

Dear friends,Earlier this year we got to meet a number of presidential candidates who passed through the area for the Iowa Caucuses. Here is Republican candidate Michelle Bachmann speaking to some people at the Brooklyn Community Library.

If the fi rst day of busi-ness was any indication,

Brooklyn's Classic Deli and Ice Cream Shoppe is a gold mine. No, make that a "Classic Mixer." A c c o r d -ing to owner Lynn Mar-shall, area r e s i d e n t s were lined up to the door to try the lunch (and dinner) menu when the doors opened on T h u r s d a y , June 7 in Brooklyn. What at-tracted customers was the menu, which includes • The Classic Mixer (sim-ilar to a Blizzard) • Sub sandwiches • Ice cream • Malts • Shakes • Sundaes of all sorts And much more. "This is a deli," said Jody Clayton, Marshall's uncle. "We have fresh-sliced deli

meat, cheese prepared sal-ads and baked beans.” Marshall says they will soon have hand cut tender-loins and hamburger on the menu. "As we get going, we will have lunch specials. The hours for the deli located at 120 Jackson St.,

B r o o k l y n , are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Marshal l , who is origi-nally from C h a r i t o n , started the b u s i n e s s with a lot of family help. M a r s h a l l received an arts and sci-ence degree

in culinary arts from Indian Hills Community College. "She had a dream and I helped her get it," Clayton said. "It's a family thing." Marshall agreed. "I want to thank all the members of our family for helping," she said. The deli offers some-thing a little different – al-most everything is made at the deli.

"All the sub rolls are made here," Clayton said. "We make them twice a day. We try to make everything here." The deli offers coffees, cappuccino and sweet rolls. Pies are also on hand, she said, all made on at the restaurant. Cheesecakes and soups should be added soon. Soups especially in the winter. They plan on adding more specials as they get going, but have a sub and Panini sandwich special most every day.

Also offered is a fresh smoked brisket "until it's gone" on Saturday and a Pulled Pork special on Tuesday, also when it's gone. "I don't want to spoil them, too much," Clayton said of the customers. Also on the menu is an Italian assorted sub "which is to die for," he said. That sub includes: • Capollo (a spiced ham) • Ham • Salami • Provolone cheese "It's dynamite," Clayton said.

A vintage 1900 cook stove, above, is the newest acquisition for

the Brooklyn Historical Museum as members continue working

to replicate the Manatt House to its 1895 turn of the century

history. "One of them main purposes of the Brooklyn Histori-

cal Society is to preserve the area's history though the actual

house itself."

By DANN [email protected]

Sometimes the neatest things come in some

very plain boxes. Take for instance the Brooklyn Historical Soci-ety. On Wednesday, April 25, the society was the recipi-ent of a plain brown/tan box, ultimately delivered to the museum building – the former William Manatt home built in 1869. Aside from the package being somewhat heavy, it was fairly nondescript – until it was opened. Inside was a vintage cook stove for the museum kitchen. According to Margery DeVilder, the stove was lo-cated at an antique store in Idaho Springs, Colorado, by Carol Hanson on a recent trip taken by Carol and her husband. Idaho Springs is a small town west of Denver in the Rocky Mountains in Colo-rado. Founded in 1859 by prospectors during the ear-ly days of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, the town was at the center of the region's mining district throughout the late nineteenth centu-ry. The town is now a popu-lar tourist stop and antique center. "The stove is a major ac-quisition that will fi ll a big gap in the replication for the house as it may have been around 1900," DeV-ilder said. The stove was purchased with donations from Mer-lin Manatt, John and Mar-lene Manatt, Doris Manatt, the children of Harold and Fern Ford and with

a $1,590 grant from Pow-eshiek County Alliance. According to a note from Hanson to the BHS board describing the stove, the "top is a warming box, used as a warming drawer for rolls or pies or sometimes for storage," she wrote. "Each lid has lifters; stove can be used for wood burn-ing." In other words, the stove is a working stove. How-ever, it won't be working

at the museum, at least not for now, since the chimneys are no longer usable at the house, DeVilder said. Steve Rhoads added that employees with Jasper Construction installed the stove. Those employees includ-ed Steve Rhoads, Ra-mon Fonseca, Eduardo Cer-vantes, Angel Cervantes, Cody Wilson, Nick Wilson and Anthony Diaz. "Acquisition of this vin-tage stove as the 'focal

point' of the kitchen will certainly bring 1895 'turn of the century history' for-ward to all those visiting the William Manatt House," said Jan Bittner, director of the Brooklyn Historical Society. "One of the main serving purposes of the Brooklyn Historical Soci-ety is to preserve the area's history through the actual house itself." Members hope that by historically furnishing the rooms, the William Manatt House will continue as a living history museum through its period furnish-ing. "This will be such an ad-dition for the area school children and visitors alike who visit and utilize the museum throughout the year," Bittner said. "By en-hancing the kitchen and, in time, the other main rooms, the house will continue as a venue for education pro-grams and social events for generations."

Things are Kraze in BrooklynBy J.O. [email protected]

Things are defi nitely go-ing Kraze in the Brook-

lyn area – yeah, it’s spelled Kraze. Kraze is more than just a fl ower shop, it’s on the cutting edge of design. Owner/designer Donna Baustian and her daughter, designer Carla McClena-than, can not only design beautiful fl ower arrange-ments, they are design col-orists and home decor spe-cialists. “We design in fl owers, paint and home decor,” said Baustian of the busi-ness. “We can help people choose their colors (in their homes) and home decor.” Located at 1744 U.S. Highway 6, Kraze opened its doors March 26. Business has been so good they’ve even added a few things. “We’ve added a Bling with jewelry, hats, brace-lets and scarfs,” Baustian said. “We really appreciate all the business Brooklyn is giving us.” They’ve also added me-morial angels and plaques. The new business is in the former Seye Home Dec-orating building, which the duo remodeled. Ron Hurst of Brooklyn designed the decor of the new business. They call it rustic industrial. Kraze specializes in fresh fl owers and plants for weddings, funerals, new babies, anniversaries or any special occasion, parties, Mother’s and Fa-ther’s Day, prom corsages and much more. The busi-ness also offers a variety of home decor items and he-lium balloons for all occa-

sions. FTD services is also available. Free delivery is avail-able in the Brooklyn area. There is a $10 charge for delivery to area commu-nities. Peggy Sue Linder is the delivery driver for Kraze. Baustian is former fl o-ral shop owner and brings eight years of experience to the business. McClena-than has 14 years of fl oral and design experience. Having been away from the business for 10 years, Baustian opened Kraze with her daughter, saying there is a need in Brook-lyn for a fl oral and design shop. “I felt since we were raised here, this would be a good location to open,” Baustian said. “Being a fl orist has al-ways been a passion of mine,” added McClena-than. “I’m excited to be able to use my talents to further the business.” The business is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday

Music is a great tool to use in the develop-

ment of children. Experts in early child-hood development have demonstrated that music does more for children than bring them joy. It helps their brain cells make the connections needed for virtually every kind of in-telligence. “By moving and dancing to music and playing simple instruments, children im-

Kindermusik consists of a number of age-appropri-ate programs for newborns through age 7. One such program is, “ABC Music &

Me,” for ages 2 to 6 years. It is a research-based language and early literacy program built around music. It helps chil-dren, develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s favorite rituals: music and story time. At a recent open house in

Brooklyn, Radcliffe shared Kindermusik and “ABC Music & Me,” with area youngsters and their par-ents. The youngsters listened to music, played hand-held musical instruments, clapped their hands and even leaped like a frog. The class lasted for about 30 minutes. Among the attendees were Chris and Ashley Grundler and their daugh-ter, Clarie, who is ninth months old, from Grinnell. “We really enjoyed the class,” said Ashley. “I have been looking for some ac-tivities for Clarie since she is under one year of age and there is not a lot for her to do. She loves music and I saw the (Kindermusik) ad

in the paper and thought I would give it a try.” Ashley said Kinder-musik is a great class for kids and Claire really en-joyed it. “They (the kids) inter-act with each other and play music,” she said. “The parents get to participate, too.” Other Kindermusik class available are “Ad-ventures,” “Village,” “Our Time,” “Imagine That,” “For the Young Child” and “Family Time.” Radcliffe, who is a state of Iowa licensed music teacher and licensed to teach Kindermusik, is of-fering “ABC Music & Me” all summer. She is also of-fering an “Adventures” class for newborns - 3 start-

ing June 7 and continuing to July 5, and for ages 5-7 from Aug. 2-30. She will also offer “Family Time in July and August. She will be offering the other classes beginning in

the fall. “I love music and I want-ed to do something that I would be able to reach more kids,” Radcliffe said of offering Kindermusik.

In 1979 Bill Dayton won his fi rst award as a meat pro-

cessor. It was for a cooked ring bo-logna. So it was only fi tting that 33 years later, he was award-ed the “Grand Champion for Ring Bologna” by the Best of the Midwest, a four state district in the national meat processors association. Dayton was also awarded the champion specialty brat for a cardon bleu bratwurst. That, however, was just the beginning as Dayton Meat Products, Inc., Malcom, won a number of awards at the 2012 Iowa Meat Processors As-sociation (IMPA) convention held Saturday, Feb. 18. “I took 20 products and I won 12 awards,” Dayton said. “This is the most I’ve ever won.” And the best was yet to come. Dayton was completely taken by surprise when he was awarded an achievement award, “In Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to the Iowa Meat Processors As-sociation.” “Meat is a way of life for Bill,” said Marcia Richmann, executive director, IMPA. “He rarely hesitates when asked to help in any project that the IMPA undertakes.” Just about the entire fami-ly was on hand, including his dad, Lawrence, who started the business in 1959, and his mother, Edith, when Rich-mann presented the award. “I had no clue this was go-

ing to happen,” Bill Dayton said. “Usually they do the achievement award at the end of the night, but they an-nounced that it was moved up because they had some special guests.” Those guests were his par-ents. “In walked my folks,” he said. “They drove up from Texas. It was a good night.” “Bill has been smoking meats for over 35 years,”

Richmann said. “Dayton Meat Products have won more than 100 awards on the state and national level for their meat products,” adding that they were the Triple Crown winner at the Iowa State Fair for his Grand Champion en-tries in ham, bacon and dried beef. At the recent convention, Dayton Meats was awarded the 2012 Grand Champion Summer Sausage.

“I’m real happy with this one,” Dayton said. “It’s a very diffi cult item to make and judge.” He also took home the Grand Champion Jerky, re-structured. “The reason why we’ve done so well is that I was taught by my father to do a good job,” he said. “Quality in, and quality out. Be consis-tent.” The business is in his blood. Formerly known as the Malcom Locker, the family business has expanded from just custom meat-processing to custom jerky, deer, sand-wiches, homemade pies and catering. During that time, Dayton said, his mom and dad had fi ve kids and his dad “had a lot of free help,” he added with a laugh. “We all worked down here.” In 1999, Lawrence retired and sold the business to has two sons, Bill and David, and son-in-law Mark Lang, who are the current owners. Other awards won by Day-ton Meat Products, Inc., at the convention include • Reserved Grand Cham-pion, meat snack sticks • Reserve Champion, small diameter cooked sau-sage • Reserve Champion, Ca-nadian bacon • Reserve Champion, whole muscle jerky • Reserve Champion, bone in ham • Champion, weiner • Champion, specialty ham

The eastern Poweshiek County community of

Guernsey, population 63, is home to a new business. Schoolhouse Garage, a vehicle maintenance busi-ness at 405 Cleveland St. opened its doors in early March. The business is owned and operated by Scott and Michelle Stef-fen of Guernsey. Robert Schlesselman is the head mechanic. The business provides tire service (new sales and repair), brake service, sus-pension, exhaust work, oil changes, welding service, tune ups and general en-gine repairs to the town of Guernsey and the extend-ing towns throughout the area. Small engine repair is also available. Future plans are to offer align-ment services and a trailer service to pick up disabled vehicles for service. The business is cur-rently open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Sat-urday. Plans are to expand to six days a week. The new business was made possible thanks in part to the Poweshiek Iowa Development (Pow I-80) revolving loan fund. Scott applied for and received revolving loan fund money from Pow I-80. He addition-ally received business as-sistance from SCORE and from Paul Heath with the University of Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Mike Gei-ger at County Bank in Deep River and Marty Wymore with Region 6 in Marshall-

town were also involved in the development of the business. The Steffens were able to purchase the former T-N-T Auto Sales building in December. Scott then took one bay and turned it into a reception area/waiting room and offi ce. Michelle offers a line of handmade jewelry that is on display in the reception area/wait-ing room. “I wanted the reception area/waiting room if some-one wanted an oil change or tire service and they needed someplace to wait,” Scott said. Wi-Fi is available for customers while they wait.

Michelle is a native of Sioux City and is a graduate of the University of Iowa in elementary education. She has taught second grade at BGM for 10 years. Scott grew up in Guernsey and graduated from the Univer-sity of Iowa. Since return-ing to Guernsey in 1992, he has worked full-time for S & S Siding, a family-owned business, with his father, Roger. He has been involved in numerous community improvement projects and served as the BGM School Board President. He cur-rently serves on the Pow-eshiek County Alliance

Board. Scott and Michelle have four boys, Jakob, At-ticus, Kalvon, and Rudy. Scott has renovated many houses in the Guern-sey area and continues to improve the landscape of Guernsey, one project at a time. “My family has always been community minded,” he said. “My Dad has al-ways said that it doesn’t matter where you live; you need to make that place better. Guernsey is small, but it is interconnected to the surrounding communi-ties and rural areas. They support each other.”

GARAGE: Provides local service to those in Guernsey areaContinued from page 26

That’s the goal with Schoolhouse Garage. It pro-vides a local service to the people surrounding Guern-sey, making it more conve-nient to get service work done to their car. While

at the same time, support-ing one of their own local entrepreneurs. It will also provide another tax base for the local community. “We were really glad to play a role in helping them

get started in Guernsey,” said Pow I-80 Executive Di-rector Deb Collum-Calder-wood. “Helping businesses start up in all areas of the county is really important to us.”

Schoolhouse Garage can be reached at 319-685-6258 or by e-mail at: [email protected]. A Web site is in the works.
