A click of a mouse or stroke of a key, can deliver almost any song or video to your television, computer, or phone. And yet, there’s something about attending a live event that cannot be replaced by technology – something visceral, energizing, and human.

Attending a live performance is more than observing. It is more than the work of an artist – their ideas and interpretations – being delivered to us. Attending a live performance means being part of the event; sharing moments with others, be they the people you came with, or the complete strangers in the audience with you. It is this shared experience that takes moments of joy, inspiration, reflection, and introspection, and elevates them to something much more sacred – an experience that reflects our shared existence. Our Spotlight season, the flagship program of The Fredericton Playhouse, is designedto provide opportunities for us to experience some of the best artistic work touring in Canada today. It includes a diversity of disciplines (music, dance, theatre, variety) in a multitude of genres, be they classical, traditional, or contemporary. Our 2012-13 edition boasts incredible opportunities for us to escape from our day-to-day lives and give ourselves the privilege of sharing some amazing experiences with others. I invite you to give yourself that gift and join us for a memorable moment.

Dive in and discover something new.I promise you won’t regret it.

SPINEvalyn ParryMonday, May 6

Award-winning songwriter, poet and ironic social commentator Evalyn Parry is gifted with a sharp pen, a quirky musical sensibility and a wicked sense of humour. Her latest inventive musical project, SPIN is inspired in part by the incredible true tale of Annie Londonderry – the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle in 1894. Parry is joined on stage by a vintage bicycle, and sound artist Anna Friz, playing instruments from the more traditional (accordion, harmonica) to the even more unusual (amplified buzz from flashing bike lights), creating a richly textured and utterly unique sonic accompaniment to Parry’s songs and monologues. This mesmerizing performance is a beautiful mix of song and poetry that strikes a brilliant and previously unexplored chord among female musicians today.

Sticky FingersRolling StonesSaturday, November 17

Sticky Fingers is the eleventh American and ninth British studio album from The Rolling Stones, and the first release on their newly formed label Rolling Stone Records. The third of their albums with Jimmy Miller producing, it was written and recorded during a period of peak creativity and performance when, musically speaking, the band was at its apex. Hits such as “Brown Sugar”, and “Sway”, a heart-breakingly beautiful song, featuring perhaps one of the greatest guitar solos ever heard on a Rolling Stones record, came out of a studio session that yielded a little bit of everything for the varied musical taste – not to mention what is perhaps the best-known Stones ballad of all time: “Wild Horses”. Sticky Fingers is a bona fide rock and roll classic, containing and summing up everything good about guitar music at the start of the 1970s. With expert song writing, incredible production, and a mix of genres, the Rolling Stones rose to a technical level of musicianship with this album that many think they never reached again.

The Concept

Remember when you used to listen to an entire album from the first song to the last? Classic Albums Live does. Three of the greatest albums of all time are flawlessly recreated on stage – note for note, cut for cut. The focus here is on the music – there are no impersonations or costumes, just the songs that have inspired generations.

Ziggy StardustDavid BowieThursday, April 18

Widely acclaimed as the definitive rock ‘n’ roll concept album, David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is loosely constructed around an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, a viable alter-ego created by Bowie to descend onto the planet and wreak havoc on rock’s fertile soil. In doing so, he released the most original rock creation since the music’s inception 20 years before. The album is a mix of genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, and melodrama that ignite glam rock tunes like “Suffragette City,” “Moonage Daydream,” and “Hang Onto Yourself,” while “Lady Stardust,” “Five Years,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll. Ziggy Stardust, although familiar in structure, was alien in performance and marked the first time Bowie’s vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion.

Wish You Were HerePink FloydFriday, January 25

Released in September 1975, Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album released by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. Inspired by material the band composed while performing across Europe, and recorded over numerous sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios, it’s a far more personal album than any other Floyd work to date. “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was a tribute to original front man Syd Barrett, who, coincidentally, made an impromptu visit to the studio while it was being recorded. Bristling with anger, self-loss, confusion, and hope, Wish You Were Here was ranked among the top 500 albums of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine.

Natalie MacMasterSaturday, October 6

Juno Award-winning fiddler and Cape Breton native Natalie MacMaster has amassed multiple gold albums, two Grammy nominations and one win (for her contribution to Yo-Yo Ma’s Songs Of Joy & Peace), a Juno Award for Best Instrumental Album for In My Hands, eight Canadian Country Music Awards, 10 East Coast Music Awards, and an honorary doctorate from St. Thomas University. With her soul and music essentially entrenched in the culture and history of Cape Breton, it is inconceivable that MacMaster be viewed as anything but a Cape Breton girl. Her invigorating collection of toe-tapping jigs, reels and strathspeys is not only a joy to behold, but with titles like “Alex MacMaster’s Jig”, “My Brother Kevin” and “Stoney Lake Reels” embraces all the values that Natalie holds dear: family, tradition, home, and faith. But it’s her majesty with the bow and her intricate technique in making the fiddle sing that floors her admirers in her live performance.

The Rankin SistersA Maritime ChristmasSaturday, December 15

Join The Rankin Sisters as they kick off the Christmas holidays with a soirée of yuletide cheer! Filled with the sisters’ trademark Celtic-influenced vocals, this concert draws from their delightful Christmas album Do You Hear. Recorded during a Rankin Family band hiatus in 1997, the sisters seized the opportunity to create an album to express their love of the holiday season. In fact, the myriad of songs hand-picked for Do You Hear are like the pages of a family scrapbook, each conjuring its own set of memories. “Angels We Have Heard on High” with its luscious harmonies and “Oh Night of Joy and Gladness”, sung a cappella, are both tunes which the sisters performed in their hometown church choir as children. Also joining Raylene, Heather and Cookie are some of the Maritime’s most talented musicians: Rankin Family drummer and percussionist Scott Ferguson, pianist Michael Creber, guitarist Clarence Deveau, bassist Bruce Jacobs and cousin Mairi Rankin on the fiddle. ‘Tis the season to enjoy the exquisite three-part harmonies of the sisters singing your favourite Christmas classics!

MERZsneeze-poems and the likeWednesday, April 17

MERZ is an evening of poetry made up of sneezes and other sounds explored through repetition and elaboration. The material was composed by the German Dadaist Kurt Schwitters and is performed and arranged by director, translator, playwright and actor Peter Froehlich. His interpretation includes not only a recital of sneeze poems and the complicated and rarely performed “Ursonata” – a 30-minute poem composed entirely of sounds – but also a series of anecdotes with the odd comment about Schwitters’ life. Froehlich turns syllables, letters and noises into a soundscape of life, by turns funny, bleak and beautiful. Moving his hands like a conductor, he leads the audience into a strange and oddly reassuring place where communication, the essence of theatre, is stripped to raw sound. Nonsensical though it may seem, MERZ is one of the funniest shows you will ever see and Froehlich’s authority and command of the text makes for a delightfully silly and enjoyable evening!

This performance is presented in our intimate onstage format.

The Trilogy ProjectLesandra DodsonWednesday, January 23

Bringing together exceptional dance artists from across Canada, Fredericton-based contemporary choreographer Lesandra Dodson presents her new work, The Trilogy Project. Three exciting new pieces, Her Blameless Mystery, In Two Days a Man Can Change, and A Leash for Two Hounds, make up a series of unconventional duets that blend highly charged physicality with nuanced characterization. Dodson’s intelligently crafted choreography is delicate while remaining fearless in its droll and delicious take on human foibles. The unpredictability, mystery and subtle interplay of The Trilogy Project make this work exciting and evocative, and one not to be missed for fans of contemporary dance, film or performance art.
