about the ablThe Australian Baseball League began in 2010 with six teams in the cities of Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. It was formed as a joint venture between Major League Baseball and the Australian Base-ball Federation to showcase athletes from around the world and bring professional baseball to Australia.

Each season, the ABL commences its 46-game regular season schedule in November following the completion of the Major League Baseball World Series. The League’s Championship Series determines it’s title-holder, wrap-ping up in mid-February which allows players to leave for international commitments. The Perth Heat have won the first two ABL Championship titles.

This season, the top three teams qualify for the postseason, as opposed to the top four teams in the previous two seasons. The team in first place at the conclusion of the regular season advances directly to the ABL Cham-pionship Series while the second and third place teams will play a series to determine who advances to the Championship Series.

History of Australian BaseballBaseball has a long and rich history in Australia, dating back 160 years to the Victorian Gold Rush when min-ers would play the game on their rest days. Progressing in to the early 20th century the game became popular as teams came from the United States on tours in front of large crowds.

As the 1900s continued clubs and associations sprung up across the nation and leagues and competitions fol-lowed with the first Claxton Shield being awarded in 1934. The first Australian Baseball League enjoyed suc-cess in the 1990s, while Australians Graeme Lloyd and David Nilsson became household names in the Major Leagues.

From 1989-1999 the original ABL ran with six to nine teams depending on the season. In that time, Sydney hosted four different teams in the Parramatta Patriots, Sydney Metros, Sydney Blues and the Sydney Wave. The Blues were the most successful team, winning one championship and hosting an ABL-single game record for attendance when they drew 13,764 fans to Parramatta Stadium in a 1994 championship series game against the Brisbane Bandits. The former league’s most successful franchise was the combination of the Melbourne/Waverley Reds who won three championships.

After hosting the 2000 Olympic Games the Australian National Team earned international recognition at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, winning the silver medal by defeating world powerhouse Japan in the semi-finals. After seeing the growth of the sport, Major League Baseball established a development academy on the Gold Coast in 2001. In 2010 the MLB and Australian Baseball Federation made sure Australian players would have a home-grown pathway to success by forming the ABL.

Additionally, Australia took a large step in its development programs when it was announced in August of 2012 that the country would gain an automatic berth in to the Little League World Series every year, beginning in 2013. Australia has never qualified for the LLWS, as it most recently competed in the Asia-Pacific region, com-peting against world-class teams such as Chinese Taipei.

Australia SeriesTeam Australia begins preparations for the 2013 World Baseball Classic by taking on the Sydney Blue Sox in an historic three-game “Australia Series” from the 26th-28th of October at Blacktown International Sportspark. The

Australia Series will be the return of Team Australia to the Harbour City, who have not played in Sydney since 2006.

The team gained international recognition when it took home the silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic games, defeating Team Japan 1-0 in the semifinals. The

team participated in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic games but failed to qualify for the 2008 games, the final year baseball was an Olympic sport. In the 2000 games, the host country did not advance to the medal round, finishing in seventh of eight teams with two tournament wins.

Team Australia participated in both World Baseball Classics in 2006 and 2009. In 2006 the team did not advance past the first round, going 0-3 with losses to Italy, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Then in 2009 Team Australia opened the tournament with an opening-game win over Mexico 17-7. However, the squad dropped their next two games as Mexico came back to knock Australia out of the tournament.

Australian Baseball FederationThe Australian Baseball Federation is the national governing body of baseball in Australia. The ABF includes eight state associations who are responsible for the sport in their territory under the direction of the ABF. Almost 40,000 players com-pete regularly around Australia and the future of the game is bright with more than half those players competing at the junior levels, including the new entry level ‘Aus-sie T-Ball’ program in primary schools.

Baseball New South WalesBaseball New South Wales is the governing body of baseball in NSW and is governed by the Australian Baseball Federation. BNSW is responsible for selecting players for the NSW Patriots to compete for the annual national

tournament, contested between the five main states of Australia. Baseball NSW manages the NSW Major League which is the highest level of play in NSW following the Sydney Blue Sox of the Australian Baseball League.

The organisation aims to unify the New South Wales baseball community and improve the popularity and participation of the sport. Baseball NSW hosts youth programs and development programs. The teams from these programs compete in tournaments all over

Australia and have seen much success in winning the U18, U16 and U14 national championships.

Blue Sox StadiumBlue Sox Stadium at Blacktown International Sportspark was originally constructed as one of two venues to host baseball for the 2000 Syd-ney Olympic games. At the games, the Stadium hosted 14 games from the 17th of September to the 24th of September, all of which were in the group stages.

Since the stadium was built in 1999 it has under-gone numerous renovations which have expanded the seating capacity to 1,201 permanent seats, all of which are chair-back seats. 500 seats sit be-hind home plate undercover with additional seats added along the first base line, third base line and behind home plate.

The stadium is equipped with four change rooms which can be configured into two larger rooms. In addition, there is a function room which is converted into corporate boxes for game days. Concessions are housed in both the forecourt and concourse around the stadium, while batting tunnels are also found on the forecourt.

Down the left field line there are two batting cages for the team located in the third base dugout and beyond the left field fence there is a practice diamond. Beyond the right-centre field wall is a second practice diamond while two more

additional batting cages are beyond the right field wall.

On the 6th of October 2012, approximately 60 people volunteered to “Paint the Town Blue,” an historic event in which players, staff and fans all painted Blue Sox Stadium blue. The intitiative was designed to make the stadium feel like a true home for the Blue Sox as manager Jason Pospishil, pitchers Chris Oxspring and Todd Van Steensel and Australian Baseball League CEO Peter Wermuth were all in attendance.

2011/2012 Season in Review

www.sydneybluesox.com.au 27

The Sydney Blue Sox saw their second year in the Australian Baseball League feature many ups-and-downs, as the team finished in a four-way tie for third place at 20-25, earning them the fourth seed in the Australian Base-ball League playoffs before falling just one game shy of the Championship Series. Within the first two months of the season, the Blue Sox suffered a nine-game losing streak before going on a tear with a nine-game winning streak.

In the first series of the season, the Blue Sox went 3-1 against the Melbourne Aces at home before enduring a nine-game losing streak which helped aid the squad in to dead-last at the conclusion of the month with a 5-11 record. However, the team turned around completely in December, posting a record of 11-2 after being spurred on by a nine-game winning streak. The December run was surged by American Brandon Barnes (pictured), now of the Houston Astros, as he hit four home runs and knocked in an ABL-record 15 runs in the series against Mel-bourne. In addition, the Sox saw four players selected to the league All-Star game in Perth in Tyler Collins, Mitch Dening, Chris Oxspring and Dae-Sung Koo. Collins took home game MVP honours after blasting a three-run

home run in the World All-Stars’ 8-5 victory.

At the turn of the year the Blue Sox were in the top four which put them in a playoff spot, but the squad was swept at home in a five-game series by the Canberra Cavalry as part of a seven game losing streak that saw their playoff position slip. In the penultimate series of the year the Blue Sox took three of five from the Adelaide Bite to sit in second place all alone, but won just one game in the final regular season series against the even-tual champions Perth to finish in the fourth spot.

On the eve of the postseason, Barnes was forced to return home which robbed the Blue Sox of their leading hit-ter and Silver Slugger nominee. Only three players managed to hit over .200 in the postseason, but the Sox still took home a win in the first round of the playoffs, defeating the Bite three games to one. Then, in round two after Sydney took a 2-1 series lead, the Aces erupted for 29 runs over the next final two games to clinch a berth in the ABL Championship series, eliminating the Blue Sox. On the campaign, Barnes led the team in batting average (.322), home runs (6), RBIs (30), runs scored (23) and slugging percentage (.534.) Also, Collins batted .298 and knocked in 22 runs while he appeared in a team-high 43 games for a team that finished last in the league with a .246 batting average.

On the mound, the Blue Sox posted the third-best ERA on the circuit at 4.48. Chris Oxspring led the team in that category at 3.08 while league Rookie of the Year Aidan Francis tied Oxspring for the team-lead with four wins.
