Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residen-tial education strengthened by important research, graduate and profession-al programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. NAU’s underlying core strength at the undergraduate level is in its ability to pro-vide knowledge of the world, an ability to appreciate change, diversity, and life itself. Faculty and staff members are committed to the residential campus concept and to the student population; however, they are also prepared to deliver education throughout Arizona and the world either online or in new campus structures. The Mountain Campus has a student population of more than 20,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at sites across the state.

NAU was established in 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. A close, personal interest in the development of each student as an individual has long been a trademark of the Mountain Campus. This educational experience is en-hanced by an atmosphere that celebrates the diversity of opinions and cultures.

The undergraduate programs at NAU cover a diverse range of disciplines from liberal arts and the sciences to professional and career-related fields.

As NAU looks to the future, it continues to develop innovative ways to provide citizens with greater access to education and strives to strengthen its teaching and service partnerships to meet the needs of a changing Arizona. Flagstaff, with a population of about 57,000, is rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Cra-ter, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

Academics in the athletic department are of utmost importance at Northern Arizona University. The ac-ademic services are under the direction of Assistant Athletic Director for Academics Pam Lowie and of-fer numerous programs to help the student-athletes throughout their academic careers.

The results have been impressive, as NAU stu-dent-athletes acheived a cumulative GPA of 3.12 during the fall semester of 2012, which was the 17th semester in the last 18 overall with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. During the 2011-12 academic year, the Lumberjacks garnered 174 Golden Eagle Schol-ar-Athlete Awards.

Forty-eight student-athletes graduated in spring 2012, which was the second largest graduating class in the history of the athletics department only be-hind the spring 2011 graduating class. In all, 67 stu-dent-athletes graduated during the 2011-12 year.

MISSIONNAU Athletics’ Academic Services department strives to provide quality academic services that will enhance the student-athletes’ total educational expe-rience and encourage graduation within four years.

Lumberjack Academics has the following programs in place for student-athletes:

PROACTIVE MENTORINGEach year approximately 30-50 first year stu-dent-athletes will be selected to participate in NAU’s ProActive Mentor program which targets students who Lumberjack Academics believes may bene-fit from academic mentoring. Student-athletes are selected based on incoming GPAs/test scores and coaches recommendations. Student-athletes are expected to attend a weekly meeting with their as-

signed academic graduate assistant as well as with their respective coach, and to report on their prog-ress in each class.

STUDY HALLFirst year student-athletes (including transfer stu-dent-athletes) are required to complete 6-8 hours of study time beginning with the second week of class-es through Reading Week. The 6-8 hours consist of scheduled times a monitor will be available and may also include tutoring by the Learning Assistance Centers, organized study groups facilitated by tutors, graduate assistants or faculty from the academic col-leges and other academic-related activities that are approved by the Athletics Academic Department Staff.

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENTAll first year freshman student-athletes are assigned to an academic advisor at the Gateway Student Suc-cess Center (GSSC). After the student-athletes’ first year, they will be assigned to a college advisor if they have declared a major while those who are unde-cided will remain assigned to a GSSC advisor. Stu-dent-athletes must declare a major before entering their 5th semester. Academic Coordinators are avail-able for pre-advisement to make sure all NCAA/NAU policies and procedures are being followed.

TUTORING SERVICESTutoring services for all student-athletes are pro-vided through the North and South Learning Assis-tance Centers. Student-athletes are given the option to utilize the master schedule which allows them to schedule set tutoring appointments for twice a week per subject throughout the academic semester. Stu-dent-athletes may also take advantage of the drop in services and make appointments on an as-needed basis.

EARLY ENROLLMENTStudent-athletes are afforded the opportunity to participate in priority registration which enables the student-athletes to accommodate practice schedules while continuing to make progress towards gradua-tion. The student-athletes are grouped with seniors and honor students for registration. In order to uti-lize priority registration, student-athletes must have all holds cleared from their account and meet with their academic advisor for advisement and activa-tion.

PROGRESS REPORTSAll student-athletes will have progress reports com-pleted once a semester. Student-athletes who receive a “D” or “F” on a progress report will be required to complete an Action Plan with the faculty for the course in which the “D” or “F” was received.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S HONOR ROLLStudent-athletes on a current roster who achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA qualify for the Athletic Direc-tor’s Honor Roll. The student-athletes are recog-nized at a designated spring men’s basketball game.

GOLDEN EAGLE SCHOLAR ATHLETESStudent-athletes who have achieved a 3.0 Cum GPA are honored at the Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete Banquet in the spring. Student-athletes are present-ed a plaque to recognize their achievement.

BIG SKY CONF. SCHOLAR ATHLETESStudent-athletes who have completed at least one term at the University, achieved a 3.2 Cumulative GPA and competed in 50% of the team’s athletic competitions are eligible for the Big Sky Conference Scholar Athlete Award.

2013 season ouTlookOn the heels of its worst season since 2006, the Northern Arizona men’s tennis team is ready to turn the page as they embark on the 2013 spring season with its eyes squarely on returning to the Big Sky Championship. The Lumberjacks are coming off a 6-16 season in 2012, finishing in a three-way tie for sixth in the con-ference with a 2-6 Big Sky record. But with four starters back, the uphill climb back to the conference championship may not be so steep, as the Lumberjacks were picked to finish sixth in the Big Sky preseason poll with the top six qualify-ing for the championship tournament.

The Lumberjacks did lose their No. 1 singles player from a year ago in Robin Pezzutto, but director of tennis Kim Bruno has a quartet of guys that can fill the void led by junior Dominic Bermudez. Bermudez, the team’s lone returning All-Big Sky performer, earned second team all-conference honors last season af-ter a stellar sophomore campaign. He led the team in victories in just his second season, posting a 12-9 singles record and a 7-1 mark against Big Sky opponents while serving as the team’s primary No. 3 singles player. Bermudez was one of just seven players to compile at least seven conference victories and he had the conference’s second highest overall winning percentage at the No. 3 spot among players that played at least eight matches there.

Bermudez will be flanked by a trio of returning seniors in Shaun Waters, Pat-rick Schimmelbauer and Robert Martin, who occupied the No. 2, 4 and 5 spots respectively in the NAU lineup last season. Schimmelbauer, the team’s only four-year player, is expected to have the first shot at the top spot in this season’s lineup after serving as the Lumberjacks’ primary No. 2 player as a freshman and soph-omore. He and Waters posted identical 9-12 records a year ago, tying for second on the team behind Bermudez.

Waters also comes into the spring on a high note after an impressive fall sea-son. The second-year transfer from Middle Tennessee State recorded a team-best 4-3 mark in the fall and reached the round of 16 of the singles main draw at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships in October, upsetting the 16th-seeded player in the process.

Bruno also returns a fifth returning letterwinner in sophomore Trevor Unger, who partnered with Waters to form the team’s primary No. 1 doubles team in 2012. Unger also competed at the No. 6 singles position in seven matches and is a leading candidate for a spot in this season’s singles lineup.

Rounding out the 2013 roster are three newcomers to the team whom as a group will create depth and flexibility to the lineup. Junior Alan Barrios and sopho-more Kester Black bring collegiate experience to the team while freshman Sarp Laleli comes to the mountain campus from Turkey where he was a U-18 dou-bles champion. Barrios is a transfer from Pima Community College where he was once ranked as No. 14 in the JUCO singles rankings and Black was a key contribtuor for Wichita State last season where played at both the No. 5 and 6 positions as a freshman.

NAU will play a 23-match schedule in 2013 that features a pair of road match-es against nationally-ranked squads at No. 36 Santa Clara, an NCAA Tennis Championship second round participant in 2012, and No. 61 New Mexico. A season-opening match at in-state Pac-12 rival Arizona and tilts at regional foes UNLV and Air Force also highlight the non-conference schedule. The Lumber-jacks will host five matches this spring, all of which are Big Sky dates, including their final three matches of the season.

A year ago, the Northern Arizona women’s tennis team faced the task of replac-ing four graduated starters. A year later, the Lumberjacks face no such task as they have the luxury of bringing back all six starters from their 10-13 squad that reached the Big Sky Championship semifinals in 2012. The Lumberjacks, picked second in the Big Sky preseason poll as selected by the conference coaches, seek their program-best eighth consecutive double-digit win campaign, a stretch that would break the tie set from the 1994-2000 seasons.

Among the six returning starters, director of tennis Kim Bruno returns four All-Big Sky performers in seniors Ghizelene Doballah and Malia Wahinepio and sophomores Hannah Stone and Johanna Vang. The all-conference quartet served as the Lumberjacks’ top-four players in the singles lineup last season and will provide NAU with a steady force in the top-half of the lineup once again in 2013. Doballah and Stone, two of the four new starters last year, provided Bru-no with a solid one-two punch at the top of the lineup. Doballah posted a 9-13 overall record exclusively at the No. 1 spot, while Stone recorded a 10-12 mark as the Lumberjacks primariy No. 2 player. Wahinepio garnered her third All-Big Sky honor of her career after an 11-11 season at No. 3 while Vang, like Stone, made a splash as a freshman at No. 4, posting an 11-10 record. The four players combined for an outstanding 27-5 record against Big Sky opponents, playing a big role in propelling the Lumberjacks to a second-place regular season finish in the conference.

In addition to their singles success, Stone and Vang formed one of the confer-ence’s most prolific doubles pairs as freshmen. They finished the 2012 season with a 13-6 doubles mark, 12-5 at No. 2 doubles, and posted the third highest win total of any duo in the Big Sky. In the fall, they upset the fifth-seeded doubles team en route to the round of 16 of the doubles main draw at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships.

Seniors Nicole Perez and Alice Pacaut will comprise the last two spots in the Lumberjack lineup, returning to their roles as the No. 5 and 6 players. Pacaut, in her first season at NAU after transferring from Stephen F. Austin, tied Wahine-pio and Vang for the team-lead in singles victories with 11, while Perez enters her fourth season as a mainstay in the NAU top-six.

The Lumberjacks will also have a great deal of depth behind their six returning starters led by senior Alice Walker. Walker enters her final season as a valuable seventh player and has filled in when called upon. Last season, Walker picked up two Big Sky wins at No. 6. Bruno also welcomes in two newcomers in junior transfer Tatum Rochin and freshman Jordan Denesik. Rochin was a key mem-ber at Pima Community College over the last two years where she helped the squad to a pair of top-16 finishes at the national tournament. Denesik comes to NAU from Phoenix’s Barry Goldwater High where she was a four-year letter-winner and starter.

A grueling season-opening weekend three matches in two days awaits the Lum-berjacks as they play No. 29 Arizona, UC Davis and No. 37 Arizona State to kick start the 2013 season. A road match at 11-time defending Big Sky Champion Sacramento State, ranked No. 56 to start the season, is also on tap as are matches at regional rivals New Mexico, Air Force and Colorado. NAU has seven home dates on the schedule, the most it has had since 2006, with five of those being conference matches and two non-conference matches versus Valparaiso and Texas-Pan American. All together, the Lumberjacks will play 25 matches this spring, their most since 2002.

In 2012, Bruno guided the women’s team to their seventh consecutive Big Sky Championship appearance despite a lineup that featured four new starters, in-cluding two freshmen. The women’s team also posted their seventh consecutive double-digit win season, finishing 10-13 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Lumberjack women, who dropped a tight 4-2 match to Montana in the Big Sky Championship semifinal, placed four players, three of whom were honored for the first time of their careers, on the all-conference teams. They also received the ITA All-Academic Team award showcasing their excellence in the classroom in addition to on the court. Bruno also assisted with the growth of Dominic Ber-mudez, who posted a career-year on the men’s team in his second season at NAU. Bermudez, a 2011 All-Big Sky second team selection, led the Lumberjack men through a 6-16 season and a 2-6 conference record.

During the 2011 season, Bruno led both of the NAU tennis programs to the fi-nals of the Big Sky Championship for the second straight season. The women’s team finished the season with a 13-11 overall record and a 7-1 conference record. To reach their sixth consecutive Big Sky final, the Lumberjack women outlasted

Montana in the semifinal round, 4-3 in a match that lasted over five hours. For the second straight season, the women’s team placed a school record-tying five players on the All-Big Sky team including Edit Suhajda, who became the second player in program history to earn four All-Big Sky first team selections. The men’s team went 9-12 overall and 6-2 in the conference in 2011. The Lumberjack men had three All-Big Sky selections for the second straight year with Hugo Ramadi-er, David Flodberg and Robin Pezzutto earning all-conference honors.

In 2010, both NAU tennis programs reached the finals of the Big Sky Champion-ship. The Lumberjack women went 13-7 overall, losing just one regular season Big Sky match and placing a school record-tying five players on the All-Big Sky team. NAU’s men’s tennis team went 13-9 in 2010 and recorded their most wins since 2000, including a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State that ended the Hornet’s 24-match conference winning streak. Andrew Reiff, Hugo Ramadier, and David Flodberg represented the Lumberjack’s on the All-Big Sky team.

In 2009, the NAU women’s team returned to the Big Sky Championship match but fell one win short of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive year. The women finished the season 13-10 overall and 6-2 in conference play, placing third in the Big Sky regular season standings. The NAU men went 7-18 in 2009 but were 5-3 in the Big Sky, advancing to the conference tournament quarterfi-nals in Bruno’s first season as head of the men’s squad.

In the past six years, Bruno has amassed an overall record of 76-56 with a 37-8 mark in conference play with the women’s team. In 2008, she led the women to their best finish since the 2002 season, compiling 15 wins with eight losses and a second-place finish in conference.

After four standout years as a student-athlete for the Lumberjacks, Bruno re-turned to her alma mater in 2005 and has since led NAU to a third-place finish in the regular-season standings in 2006 and runner-up finishes in the conference in 2007 and 2008. Prior to Bruno arriving in Flagstaff, the Lumberjacks had fin-ished below .500 three years in a row.

In her first season, Bruno guided NAU to a 10-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in league play. In her second year, Bruno coached the Lumberjack women to a

12-10 overall record finishing 6-1 in conference play and the women advanced to the conference tournament championship final for the first time since 2004. The 12-win season was another improvement with Bruno increasing the Lumberjack win total in each of her first three seasons. She totaled 10 overall wins in 2006, 12 in 2007 and 15 in 2008.

Under Bruno’s tutelage, a number of Lumberjacks have received individual ac-colades to go along with the team’s accomplishments. In all, Bruno has 34 All-Big Sky selections, with three coming in her inaugural year of 2006. In that first season, Bruno was named the Big Sky Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year.

Bruno has also directed the tennis teams to success on and off the court. In the last six years, 39 women’s players have earned the Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award for academic excellence, while 13 men’s players have earned the honor in her three years as Director of Tennis. 11 women’s players and one men’s player have also been selected Big Sky All-Academic.

Bruno is no stranger to NAU having been a standout tennis player for the Lum-berjacks from 1996-2000. She helped lead the Lumberjacks to their first Big Sky Conference tournament title as a freshman, and then twice more as a sophomore and junior, marking the only three consecutive conference titles for the team in the history of the program.

Bruno also led the team to the program’s only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. In 2009, the 1999 women’s tennis team was inducted into the NAU Hall of Fame.

In her senior year, the Lumberjacks were defeated in the Big Sky Championship finals, making Bruno and her fellow seniors the only class to reach the finals four years in a row. She posted an overall record that year of 18-15.

Bruno was a three-time All-Big Sky second team selection, and was named to the All-Big Sky first-team and All-Academic team as a senior year. While at NAU, Bruno was also awarded the SkyJacks Scholarship given to one athlete a year for outstanding academic and athletic performance. After graduation from Northern Arizona, Bruno traveled and held jobs as a ski instructor and whitewater rafting guide at Sunlight Mountain in Glenwood Springs, Colo., and later as a tennis pro for Club Med in the Bahamas.

In 2002 she was hired as the assistant women’s tennis coach at Dartmouth Col-lege, where her responsibilities included individual lessons, recruiting, travel scheduling, and setting up tournaments. Bruno then spent two years at the Uni-versity of Connecticut as the men’s and women’s graduate assistant tennis coach. At Connecticut she served as the only assistant to head coach Glenn Marshall.

Bruno’s other coaching experience includes teaching tennis at country clubs during the summers for nine years, including one summer spent in Flagstaff teaching tennis at Forest Highlands Country Club.

The Chicago, Ill., native earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical educa-tion from Northern Arizona in 2000 and a master’s degree in sports management from Connecticut in 2005.

Heckley, a highly successful collegiate tennis player, began his playing career at Foothill College, where he played from 2004-06. Edit Suhajda enters her first season as the assistant coach for the NAU women’s tennis program. She returns to the Lumberjack women’s tennis program after wrapping up an illustrious four-year career for the Lumberjacks in 2011 where she served as one-half of NAU’s stellar Hungarian duo with Orsi Golovics. She replaces her former teammate Golovics as the NAU women’s assistant coach.

Suhajda was a key member of the Lumberjack women’s tennis team from 2008-11 playing an integral part in helping the team achieve four double-digit win seasons and runner-up finishes at the Big Sky Conference Tournament in all four of Suhajda’s seasons at NAU. She was a four-year letterwinner and became only the second player in program history to be a four-time All-Big Sky first team selection and one of only four players to be named All-Big Sky first team three or more times.

She made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2008, earning All-Big Sky first team honors. As a freshman, she competed at the top two singles positions and finished her collegiate season with a 14-7 overall singles record. Suhajda played primarily with Golovics at No. 1 doubles, posting an overall doubles mark of 12-6.

Her freshman season was just the beginning of a spectacular career as she would earn All-Big Sky first team honors each of her remaining three seasons, serving almost exclusively as the Lumberjacks’ No. 1 singles player and part of NAU’s No. 1 doubles pair with Golovics. She would finish her career with 44 singles victories, 27 of which came at the top spot, and 48 doubles wins. Suhajda was at her best against the Big Sky as she was nothing short of dominant versus con-ference opponents, compiling a 22-10 singles mark and 25-4 doubles record in conference play.

To begin her final season in 2011, Suhajda entered the spring ranked No. 20 in the ITA Mountain Region singles rankings.

Suhajda arrived at NAU following an accolade-filled amateur career in Hungary. She won the Hungarian Championship in singles at the age of 14 and repeated as the singles Hungarian Champion at 17 and 18. Together with Golovics, the pair also won the Hungarian doubles title as well as the ITF doubles.

Suhajda, a native of Budapest, Hungary, double majored in electronic media and film and advertising and graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2011. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in human relations at NAU.

A new era in the Big Sky Conference began in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics. The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full members. Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league as affiliate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA). The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of the six charter members: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership.Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past four seasons. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In ad-dition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship for the first time. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring champion-ships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.
