2012–13 men’s basketball season Preview

After several years of building a strong program, fifth-year head coach Bubba Smith returns a solid nucleus of players to go along with a number of talented newcomers.

Below is the Tigers’ preseason outlook with Coach Smith.

Heading into this season, the Tigers return four starters, eight letter-winners and welcome 11 newcomers. After earning the most wins since 1997-98, Sewanee returns the majority of its scoring and rebounding. Additionally, the Tigers were just as tough defensively, ranking first in the SCAC in field goal percentage defense.

“We made great strides last season on the defensive end of the floor,” said Smith. “We hope to improve our efforts on the defensive end and continue to rebound the ball well. I’m excited about the intensity we have shown so far this preseason. Defense is about consistent effort and consistent execution. If we can do both well this year, we should build on the progress we made last season.”

In the backcourt, Sewanee returns a number of key players. Headlined by 2011-12 All-SCAC guard valentino bryant, the Tigers also return key contributors in seniors lewis affronti and brett bouldin.

“Leadership is something that we have worked hard to develop over the last few years,” said Smith. “Creating and building expectations for the men in our program have been important to where we are to-day. Our seniors and juniors have played significant minutes and gained valuable experience during their careers. I’m con-fident that Brett, Valentino, and Lewis will lead our backcourt well this season.”

Along with the key returners, Sewanee has a number of talented newcomers added to the mix.

“We have many guards that we are ex-cited about,” said Smith. “Some will have an immediate impact on our program and some will have to be patient and continue to develop. nilan hodge has separated himself so far this fall. He is a quick point guard who can create for his teammates and has the potential to be a great floor leader. leo born and will downey are two guards who can really shoot it from long range. They already have the physical at-tributes to handle the college game. The quicker they can learn our system, the

sooner they will be able to contribute. alex arnold has given us a solid presence in the back-up point guard position. He is a point guard who is steady and consistent. John mckenzie is an athletic guard who has the potential to be a great defender and is learning our system. matt tome is another great shooter who has shot the ball well this fall and will be a solid guard for our team. Backup point guard bryan beviacqua is coming off a tough ankle injury and is slowly getting back into game shape. He will continue to provide us with solid efforts when he returns.”

After posting an 11-2 mark inside Juhan Gymnasium last year, the Tigers will look to take that success on the road this winter.

“We need to be able to win on the road,” said Smith. “We held our home court last year, but failed to win close games on the road. Teams that are tough physically and mentally can win on the road. We have challenged the toughness of our team in both areas since last spring. I’m anxious to see how we respond on the road to open the season.”

Along with the solid guard play, Se-wanee returns 2011-12 All-SCAC starting forward tyler brown.

“Tyler Brown is a high energy player,” said Smith. “When he is flying around the court, our team usually plays well. I expect Tyler to continue where he left off last year. Tyler’s athleticism allows him to be a tough match up with most players at his position. If he can bring us consistent effort and energy each night, our team will respond to his leadership.”

In addition to Brown, Sewanee features a frontcourt that returns junior anvil nel-son and sophomore robert veal.

“Even though our system is a one-post offense, it allows us flexibility at the for-ward position to play a number of different line-ups,” said Smith. “Anvil and Robert split time last season at the post position and have experience on their side. They both bring different skills to the position and I expect them to continue their con-sistent play this year.”

Joining the three returners are a pair of talented post players.

“We have added two post players this year, with keshonn carter and Garrett heatherly,” said Smith. “Keshonn has

had an impressive fall and his athleticism and feel around the basket has made our team better. Keshonn runs the floor well and will give us an athletic post presence. Garrett is a big body with true post moves. He has the potential to be a solid player for us in the near future.”

Additionally, incoming forwards seth brown and byron turner, along with sheldon hitchcock, are expected to add additional depth for Sewanee.

“Our athleticism at the four has also been improved with the addition of Seth and Byron,” said Smith. “Seth has a great skill set and is already one of our best shooters from three. He also has a great feel around the rim and can score in mul-tiple ways. Byron has a great upside and his athleticism has been a great addition to our team. As he learns our system and adjusts to the college game, he will be expected to contribute in the near future. Finally, Sheldon adds another dimension to the forward position. He has great range and a good feel for the game.”

As a program, the 2012-13 season marks the first year that the Tigers will be part of the newly formed Southern Athletic Association.

“I’m excited about the new confer-ence,” said Smith. “I think it will create more local rivalries and will be easier for fans and alumni to follow our confer-ence. Obviously, less missed class time and shorter trips allow our guys to keep up their coursework and not get behind. Having an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament is always a goal for our team. With every team competing in the confer-ence tournament now, the opportunity for a post-season bid becomes a reality for each program. We want to be playing our best basketball come February, which is always one of our team goals.”

head coach bubba smith

bubba smith enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Sewanee Tigers. In just a short period of time, the changes that Smith has put in place have become the new standard of excellence for Se-wanee Basketball. From how the team is outfitted, facility improvements, to how the team travels, every aspect of the Ti-ger program is being improved. Although many of these changes are critical to player retention and recruitment, the most valuable changes Smith has brought to the Mountain is the belief that Sewanee can compete with the best teams in the country. Even though the rebuilding pro-cess requires time and patience, Smith will not settle until the Tigers are consis-tently competing with the top teams in the SAA and Division III. Recruitment of the highest caliber student-athletes with great character, talent, and undying work ethic is the key to the rebuilding process.

Smith’s first season with Sewanee saw the Tigers make steady improvements throughout the year. The 2008-2009 Tigers finished the season with a three game home winning streak over Oglethorpe, Birmingham-Southern, and rival Rhodes (Sewanee’s first win streak of three or more games and first SCAC weekend

What otherS are Saying about CoaCh Smith

—Tony Shaver, Head Coach, College of William & Mary

“Bubba will do a great job at Sewanee. He has a great basketball mind, a will-ingness to work hard, and a competitive spirit that will lead his program. He did an outstanding job of continuing the tradition of excellence here at Hampden-Sydney. He is a man of strong character which will enable him to attract the very best student-athletes in the country. Sewanee will be competing for championships in the near future.”

—Dee vick, Head Coach, Hampden-Sydney College

“Coach Smith brings proven experience to Sewanee after serving at the helm of a successful basketball program that is steeped in tradition. He is an outstanding teacher of the game and is well-respected throughout the ranks of the basketball coaching community.”

—Mark Webb, Sewanee Athletic Director

sweep since 2004-2005) and then taking #1 seeded Trinity University (ranked #6 nationally) to overtime in the first round of the SCAC tournament before losing on a heartbreaking buzzer-beater. Along with a strong finish to the season, Smith’s Tigers held their opponents to the lowest scoring average and the lowest rebounding rate since 2001-2002. Sewanee’s opposition shot the lowest percentage from the field since 2001 and the lowest from the three point line since 1999-2000. The Tigers own three point percentage was the high-est since 2003-2004, and the five home victories were the most since 2005-2006. During the 2008-2009 season, Smith also notched his 100th career collegiate vic-tory with a 57-52 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Feb. 13, 2009.

In 2011-12, the Tigers earned the most wins since the 1997-98 team finished 20-6. In addition to making its first SCAC Tour-nament appearance since 2009, Sewanee closed last season with an impressive 11-2 mark inside Juhan Gymnasium. Addition-ally, the Tigers earned their first victories over SCAC Champion Trinity and Centre since the 2004 and 2005 campaigns.

Along with the majority of its scoring and rebounding returning, Sewanee should

have a strong defense this season. A year ago, the Tigers ranked second in the league in points allowed (62.7 ppg) and first in field goal percentage defense (40.1 percent). Additionally, Sewanee was the top rebounding team in the SCAC.

Smith came to Sewanee after spending eight years at perennial Division III power Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, the last five as the head coach. During his three years as an assistant, Smith helped current William & Mary Head Coach Tony Shaver lead the Tigers to 75 wins, two ODAC titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and an appearance in the 2003 NCAA Division III Final Four. As head coach at Hampden-Sydney, Smith continued the school’s tradition of excel-lence, leading the Tigers to a 94-46 (.671) record, including two ODAC championships and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. In Smith’s first season as a head coach, he became the only rookie coach to ever lead his team to a No. 1 national ranking, ODAC championship, and NCAA tourna-ment appearance with a 25-5 record. Overall, Smith’s 94 wins are the most ever for a Hampden-Sydney basketball coach through his first five seasons.

a feW WordS from CoaCh Smith: I am excited about the progress we are making in rebuilding the men’s basketball program. It is a great honor to be associated with such a prestigious university. From the moment our family stepped foot on the campus, we immediately felt like we were at home. There is no question that Sewanee is special, and I hope to build upon the success that has been a part of Sewanee’s past, as we look forward to growing the men’s basketball program. I’m passionate about attracting young men to Sewanee who have a commitment to excellence in their academic, athletic, social, and personal growth. I have been blessed over the last 12 years as an assistant and head coach to lead young men who have made me a better person and coach. The successes our players have had off the court have been equally as impressive as their accomplishments on, and I envision the same for our student-athletes at Sewanee. I am looking forward to building special traditions at Sewanee, connecting with former players and alumni, and making this journey a family affair.

assistant coach bradley Pierson

Pierson enters his second season as both the assistant men’s basketball and assistant cross-country coach. For the basketball program, Pierson has played a huge role as recruiting coordinator for one of the largest incoming classes in Sewanee history. After helping mentor two All-SCAC selection last season, Pierson and head coach Bubba Smith add 11 new players to the 2012-13 roster.

Additionally, Pierson has helped transform the returning play-ers physically as the Tigers’ basketball strength and conditioning coach.

Pierson, a 2009 Sewanee graduate, originally returned to the Mountain after spending two years as the assistant men’s bas-ketball coach at SAA member Berry College.

The four-year letterwinner, Order of Gownsmen, and 2008-09 captain, finished his Sewanee career in the school’s top-10 in three-point field percentage and three-point field goals made. After earning his B.A. in economics from the University of the South, Pierson went on to earn M.A. from Berry in secondary education.

From the legendary football team of 1899 to recent participation in national tournaments in field hock-ey, tennis, cross-country, and equestrian, Sewanee has a long tradition of excellence in sports. now

sewanee basketball: it’s more than …athletic training room

Community SerViCe the men’s basketball team helped housing sewanee rebuild a local community center.

“Playing basketball at Sewanee has afforded me the opportunity to have a positive impact on the people around me. It has taught me the concept of servant leadership and placing others before myself.”

BRADLEY PIERSONAlumnus, ’09

outreaCh Players volunteered with local youth at the fall fest in sewanee.

“Our team finds value in serving the lo-cal community; whether participating in Housing Sewanee, Sewanee Angel Tree, or working with students from Sewanee Elementary.”

TRENT WILLIAMSAlumnus, ’12

… on the Court

Placing the needs of others first on the court is one of the primary foundations of team success for Sewanee men’s basketball. More importantly, it is a concept that the Tigers take seriously off the court as well. Whether it’s working with Housing Sewanee, putting on youth clinics, study abroad, or doing an internship, as a team we recognize our opportunity and responsibility to have a positive impact on our campus, our com-munity, and the world.

… four yearS on CamPuS

Sewanee men’s basketball ex-tends beyond just four years spent on the Mountain. The current Tigers wouldn’t be where they are without the support, foundation, and encouragement from former Tiger athletes. Sewanee men’s basketball alumni young and old alike, share a common bond with the current team and they all understand that wearing the Sewanee jersey is a special com-mitment. We invite and welcome men’s basketball alumni to stay connected with the team. Join us in the spring for our annual Alumni Game!

We had a record turnout for the annual Purple and White game.Left to right, Assistant Athletic Trainer Meagan Bevins, Head Athletic Trainer Ray Knight, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Danielle Green.

The athletic training room staff at Se-wanee housed in the Fowler Sport & Fitness Center consists of three certified athletic trainers who use a 2,000-square-foot treatment and rehabilitation center to service the nearly 400 student-athletes in 20 varsity sports.

The head athletic trainer is Ray Knight who is in his 10th year in this position at Sewanee after serving as an assistant athletic trainer here on the Mountain in 2000-01. Knight is assisted by Danielle Green and Meagan Bevins.
