DeAr FrienDS,as we turn the page on an extraordinary summer season and witness all the beauty the Berkshires has to offer during the cooler months, Shakespeare & Company keeps the gears moving into a vibrant and busy fall and winter. even as the leaves and snow begin to fall we continue to celebrate our 35th Season of theatre in beautiful historic lenox. the “off-season” is no longer a notion that exists at Shakespeare & Company, and we’re elated to present another season of mysterious, side-splitting, and farcical fun—that’s assured to warm your heart as you battle the cold. almost immediately after we close
the final production of the summer, the elayne P. Bernstein theatre will open its doors with three tremendous plays that will satiate your appetite for great theatre until the first buds start blossoming in the spring!
Patrick Barlow’s ingeniously clever adaptation of The 39 Steps took Broadway by storm in 2008. We’ll mount our own take with funny man Jonathan Croy in the director’s seat and featuring the hilarious and versatile ensemble of elizabeth aspenlieder, Jason asprey, David Joseph and Josh aaron McCabe. We’ll ring in the holidays with our popular and irreverent December tradition, David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries, starring longtime Company member David Josef hansen whom I last directed in The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged). and finally, we’ll provide some sizzling heat in February and March with David Ives’ absolutely hysterical adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s classic farce, The Liar, directed by a man no stranger to comedy, Mr. Kevin G. Coleman.
these plays are the perfect finale to our 35th Season, which has been such a monumental success so far. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped Shakespeare & Company realize the dream of 35 years. that list begins—first and foremost—with yOU, our beloved patrons. as an organization, we’re more artistically vibrant than ever, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

directed by JOnathan CrOy featuring elIzaBeth aSPenlIeDer JaSOn aSPrey · DavID JOSePh JOSh aarOn MCCaBe
An ingenious thriller, the ultimate murder mystery (not to mention
one of the funniest plays we’ve ever read), The 39 Steps has it all!
On a perfectly lovely evening in 1935, richard hannay (a perfectly normal englishman) goes out for a perfectly innocent night at the theatre. During the performance, he meets a mysterious woman with a frantic tale of an impending assassination and top secret plots against the government. hannay is suddenly drawn into an epic, romantic espionage thriller, during which he’s chased by nazis, framed for murder, and pursed by the police. In true noir fashion, he finds love (a few times) and loses love (a few times), all while trying desperately to save the world.

We’re pleased to celebrate our 24th annual Fall Festival of Shakespeare and continue the
tradition of immersing youth in the most active, compelling and transformative ways. With the tina Packer Playhouse filled to the rafters with supporting families, friends, and classmates, it’s no wonder WBUr in Boston compared it to “a rock concert. Whether you’ve been “naughty” or “nice,” you won’t want to miss the next episode
of Shakespeare & Company’s holiday tradition, The Santaland Diaries.
this one-man rollicking exploration of the dark side of Christmas is back for another
round of satiric, peppermint-coated fun. For the past two years, we’ve invited a new actor (let’s face it… elf) to don the regulation pointy-toed socks and jingling bells. this year, we’re pleased to welcome funny man David Josef hansen (The Taming of the Shrew, The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged)) as Crumpet the elf. artistic Director tony Simotes returns to direct the production, incorporating more fun and surprises than you can spin a dreidel at!

A tangled web of lies, misdirected advances, and the unmistakable confusion of love, The Liar
has all of the ingredients that make for a great French farce.
the truth will set most people free, but for Dorante (our disingenuous hero), a sequence
of fibs may pave a convoluted road to happiness. a hilarious farce about mistaken identity, The Liar was originally penned by the classic 17th-century French playwright Pierre Corneille, in 1664. this adaptation by award-winning american playwright David Ives merges the iambic humor of classic verse with a contemporary twist.

actor training is at the very heart of Shakespeare & Company. For over three decades, S&Co. has honed the techniques taught
in the Month-long Intensive. an immersive training experience, the Intensive guides participants through text analysis, movement,
elizabethan dance, alexander technique, linklater voice Work, stage combat, exploration of the actor/audience relationship, sonnet study, scene work, and in-depth discussions about the function of theatre
in today’s world. actors train their voices and bodies with a regimen of demanding classes, and delve deeply into their own imaginations,
intellects, and emotional lives in order to bring the whole of the actor’s being into the moment of theatre.
led by a core group of S&Co.’s Master teachers, the Month-long Intensive brings over 40 actors to the Berkshires every January. To learn more about
this unique experience and take the next step in your actor training, visit the Center for Actor Training at Shakespeare.org/training or call

throughout our 35th Season, Shakespeare & Company is paying tribute to Founding artistic Director tina Packer. We renamed our main stage the tina Packer Playhouse to recognize her groundbreaking contributions to the organization. In conjunction with the renaming, we also created the Tina Packer Fund for Shakespeare & Company, which will support annual facilities expenses and create an operating reserve for S&Co. The Tina Packer Fund has an initial goal of $1 million and we have already raised close to $500,000.
