2012-13 S EASON PREV I EWWith six upperclassmen set to lead Cleveland State this year, head

coach Brian Etzkin and the Vikings will once again be striving for a high level of excellence on the courts during the 2012-13 season.

“We are a veteran team this season and I am excited to see where we will go,” Etzkin said. “I believe that we can go as far as our senior leadership will take us, and hopefully that is back to the Horizon League Championship match and hopefully this is our year.”

Etzkin will have plenty to work with this year, as six letterwinners return from last season’s squad, including the senior trio of Nicole Janek, Maria Lazaris and Mengdi Liu. The seniors will be joined by three ju-niors; Alex Bush, Alex Power and Kara Sherwood, and one Freshman, Ellen Folkers.

After playing in limited action last year due to injury, Alex Bush will start the 2012-13 season as Cleveland State’s No. 1 singles player. Bush was named to the All-Horizon League second team as a freshman and is one of five current Vikings to be in the 20-win season club.

“Alex is capable of making a huge difference on the team this year if we can get her healthy and playing at 100%. She is a player that has a lot of big match experience and is developing into an all-court player. She is attacking more off of her ground stroke and her serve is improving which will allow her to be a dominate player at the top of the lineup,” Etzkin said.

Alex Power recorded a team-best 25-12 singles record last year, in-cluding a perfect 8-0 mark in league play. Power will be starting in the top half of the lineup for the third straight year and will be trying to make her way onto the top-10 all-time wins list at CSU.

“Alex will start in the top half of the lineup again this year, and it will be fun to watch her play injury free after having off-season surgery. She is a great doubles player for us and a strong player in the front court,” Etzkin said.

Maria Lazaris is one of the most experienced players on the team, as she enters her senior season ranked sixth on the all-time singles wins list at CSU. Lazaris has had a consistent presence in the top-half of the lineup throughout her career, and will continue that during her final season in a Viking uniform.

“Maria will start at the No. 3 spot for us this year, but she defi-nitely has the potential to play higher. She is deadly off the ground and looks to control the point from the back court. Maria is one of three seniors this year and we will be looking for leadership from her, which will definitely come natural for her,” Etzkin said.

Kara Sherwood notched her first 20-win season last year, includ-ing a 7-1 record in league play. Sherwood was one of three Vikings to reach the 20-win mark last season, and is another Viking who is just shy of making the all-time singles wins list at CSU.

“Kara will start in the middle of the lineup this year, but she is another player who has the potential to play higher. She has a dis-

tinct weapon in her backhand and is very good at the net with overheads and volleys. Kara competes very well and has great versatility which makes her a crucial part of our lineup,” Etzkin said.

Ellen Folkers will be playing her first season of collegiate tennis dur-ing 2012-13, and will have an immediate impact on the Viking lineup.

“Ellen has some powerful ground strokes and when she is in position she hits as good and clean of a ball as anyone. She handles herself well at the net and has an uncanny ability to play good defense when she is in trouble. Ellen has a great attitude and works hard and it will be fun to watch her develop over the next couple years,” Etzkin said.

Nicole Janek is coming off her best season as a Viking, as she posted a 24-11 singles record last year and a 6-2 mark in league play. Janek will continue to be a dominant presence for CSU in the middle of the lineup, leading the Vikings during her final season of collegiate tennis.

“Nicole has proven to be one of the best ground strokers in the league the past three years and now she gets the chance to lead the team to a league title. She is our emotional leader on the court and she is full of team spirit and Viking Pride. Nicole is now able to win free points on her serve and has worked on developing her net game over the last year,” Etzkin said.

Liu, who posted an 8-5 record last season, will be competing for a spot in the starting lineup for CSU. Liu tallied a 7-3 record during dual meets at the No. 6 spot, while she also posted an 8-7 doubles record.

“Mengdi really has the ability to play anywhere in our lineup. She is a strong doubles player and has one of the prettiest forehands in the league. We are counting on her experience to pay off during her senior year,” Etzkin said.

Over the past 10 seasons Brian Etzkin has turned the Cleveland State women’s tennis program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League. Etzkin has guided the Vikings to eight straight winning seasons, and he will be striving for the same level of excellence during his 11th year at the helm of the program.

Last season, Etzkin led the Vikings to their second straight appearance in the Horizon League Championship match as CSU entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed for the third straight year. The league championship came on the heels of a regular season in which the Vikings posted a 15-8 record, including a 7-1 mark in league matches.

Etzkin became the head coach at CSU in 2002-03, taking over a women’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. And the change came quickly, as the Vikings won 10 matches during Etzkin’s second year and have finished .500 or better in eight of his 10 seasons.

The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone during the 2009-10 season, recording his 100th career victory with the women’s program. Entering the 2012-13 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 138-129 at the helm of the Vikings.

As a team, the Vikings reached another impressive milestone during the 2010-11 season, as CSU advanced to the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament for the first time in program history. In 10 seasons, Cleveland State has notched an 11-13 record in the league tournament under Etzkin.

Etzkin’s accolades have earned him a pair of Horizon League Coach of the Year awards, as he earned the honor following the 2011 and 2004 seasons. He has also mentored two women’s play-ers to the all-league first team, as Sarah Galon (2004, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07) and Catrine Bjerrehus (2009, ’10, ’11, ’12) earned a spot on the team during all four years of their Viking careers.

The Vikings are just as impressive off the court also, as Alex Pow-er and Bjerrehus were both named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year and the women’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors seven out of the past eight seasons.

Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, including Galon who was a two-time recipient (2006, 2007). Charlotte Gibbons (2010) and Morgan Ungerott (2008) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU.

Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 10 years three members of the women’s tennis team have been involved with the Cleveland State Stu-dent-Athlete Advisory Council, including current Viking Nicole Janek who is serving as the president this year. During 2006 Galon served as the vice president and Ungerott served as the secretary.

In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank and adopting a second grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland. At the food bank, the student-athletes do anything from sort and package food to put together boxes that will be sent out to those in need. When the

Vikings visit the elementary school, they assist students with their reading, compre-hension and vocabulary skills.

Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator.

He also worked as the assistant tennis professional at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in addition to being the Tennis Director and Head Pro at Walnut Hills Country Club. Prior to working with Michigan State, Etzkin spent two years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Western Illinois University from 1998-2000.

Etzkin also coached the 2002 Midwest Junior Davis Cup team to the national cham-pionship in Columbia, S.C. He is an active United States Professional Tennis Associa-tion (USPTA) Certified Teaching Pro.

Etzkin played college tennis for four years at Southern-Illinois University-Carbon-dale, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior in 1998, he received GTE Academic All-American honors and was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic selection.

He later returned to school, earning a master’s degree in sport management from West-ern Illinois in 2000, while serving as a graduate assis-tant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Etzkin and his wife, Holly, have one son, Aaron (17 months), and reside in Mo-reland Hills.

Frank Polito, a northeast Ohio native, joins the Cleveland State women’s tennis team as an assistant coach during the 2012-13 season, following 21 successful years in the industry.

Polito joins the CSU coaching staff after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s ten-nis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tournament titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. Georgia also finished the year ranked in the ITA top-10 five out of his six years. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to as-sociate head coach in September of 2010.

Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (2004-06) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (1999-2001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95).

“Frank is probably one of the top assistant coaches in the country for both men and women. He comes to us with three SEC cham-pionship rings and helped get Georgia top recruiting classes during his time there. He has a lot of experience as a coach and I am very excited to have him on the staff and working with the women’s team,” head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from EMU.

stuDent assistant coach // First season

Yannick Goossens joins the Cleveland State coaching staff for his first season as a student assistant, following a stellar four-year career in a Viking uniform.

Goossens, a three-time All-Horizon League First Team honoree, was an integral part of three league championship teams (2009, 2010, 2011), guiding the Vikings to three NCAA appearances during his time at CSU.

During his four seasons as a Viking (2008-2012), Goossens compiled a singles record of 82-58 which currently ranks fourth all-time on the CSU singles wins list. He recorded three 20-win seasons, one of just three Vikings to accomplish the feat.

“Yannick joins our coaching staff this year after an historic career as a Viking. He has proven to be a very different coach than player - he is thoughtful and patient and works very well with the team. He has a great eye for the game and has a great passion for tennis and Cleveland State,” head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Goossens is currently finishing his undergraduate degree in international business. Following his time at Cleveland State, Goos-sens plans on trying his hand at professional tennis.

For the second straight season, head coach Brian Etzkin led the Vikings to the Cham-pionship match of the Horizon League Tournament last year, after ending the regu-lar season with a second place finish and a 7-1 league record.

CSU’s success started during the fall season, as the Vikings combined for a 33-30 singles record during fall tournaments and an 18-17 doubles record. Three Vikings picked up singles titles during fall tournaments, including Alex Power who claimed two titles. Power was the Flight 6 Singles champion at the Kentucky Invitational and also won the C Flight Consolation bracket at the Martha Thorn Invite.

Kara Sherwood and Maria Lazaris also claimed titles during the fall season, Sher-wood winning the Singles D Draw at the Kentucky Invitational and Lazaris winning the Singles A Draw Consolation bracket at the same tournament.

The Vikings recorded a pro-gram first at the ITA Mid-west Regional last season, as the doubles team of Catrine Bjerrehus and Lazaris ad-vanced to the Round of 16, becoming the first CSU tan-dem to do so. The duo post-ed victories against Eastern Michigan and Notre Dame before being knocked out by a team from Toledo.

The Vikings got off to a slow start to open the 2012 spring season, as they entered the fourth week of action with a 2-3 record. CSU went on to win five of its next six matches though, including the program’s first-ever vic-tory against Toledo (Feb. 19). During this stretch the Vikings also had three 7-0 sweeps against Case Western Reserve, Oakland and Dayton.

CSU began Horizon League play with an 8-7 record, after picking up just one win against Albany in its final four non-conference matches of the sea-son.

The Vikings opened their league schedule with four straight wins, defeat-ing Detroit, Youngstown State, Green Bay and Milwaukee. The lone blem-ish on their league record came at UIC, as they fell to the league-leading Flames, 5-2. CSU then closed out the regular season with three straight victories, including a pair of sweeps against Valparaiso and Butler.

For the third straight year CSU claimed the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship, earning a bye into the semifinals where the Vikings cruised to a 4-0 victory against sixth-seeded Detroit.

After advancing to the championship match of the Horizon League tour-nament for the second time in program history, CSU once again went up against tough competition, facing top-seeded UIC, who had won 15 straight titles. The Flames posted doubles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to pick up the first point of the match, and went on to claim three straight singles matches for the 4-0 victory.

Bjerrehus and Lazaris were each honored for their work throughout the season, Bjerrehus earning first team all-league honors and Lazaris earning second team all-league honors.
