2011-12 S EASON PrEV I EWAfter reaching the championship match of the Horizon League Tour-

nament last season, head coach Brian Etzkin now knows what the Vi-kings are capable of and will be striving for the same level of excellence during the 2011-12 season.

“This season, if we stay healthy and work harder than everyone else we have a very strong chance of winning the Horizon League Champi-onship for the first time ever, and that is our goal heading into the spring season,” Etzkin said.

Etzkin will have plenty to work with this year, as seven letterwin-ners return from last season’s squad, including Catrine Bjerrehus who is the lone senior on the roster. Bjerrehus will be joined by a trio of juniors; Nicole Janek, Maria Lazaris and Mengdi Liu and a trio of sophomores; Alexandra Bush, Alex Power and Kara Sherwood.

“With everyone returning from last year, we are right in the mix of things at the top of the league standings for the first time ever and that is a very exciting thing for this program,” Etzkin said.

After continued improvement throughout her first two seasons, La-zaris has made her way to the top of the lineup for the Vikings. Last season she posted a 17-8 record, including a perfect 8-0 mark in league play, primarily at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.

“At the end of last season Maria was playing at a very high level which she continued to do throughout the fall season, earning the No. 1 spot. With her playing that well, it is like having a new recruit and hopefully she can continue to play at that level throughout the spring season,” Etzkin said.

Bjerrehus, a three-time All-Horizon League first team honoree, will begin the year at the No. 2 position as she enters her final season tied for sixth on the all-time career wins list with 46 singles victories.

“Catrine hits one of the biggest balls in the league, and she will be a great leader for us on and off the court this year as we try to give her a championship during her final season as a Viking,” Etzkin said.

Bush, a 2011 All-Horizon League second team honoree, is com-ing off a strong freshman season in which she posted a 23-10 record. Included in her 23 wins was a 6-2 league mark, playing at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

“Alex may start lower in the lineup for us due to some injuries, but I’m hoping that she continues to mature on the court and build her game and ascend the lineup as the season goes on,” Etzkin said.

Sherwood enters her sophomore season vying for a spot in the middle of the Viking lineup after posting an 18-17 singles record last season. Sherwood went 7-1 throughout league play and ended the year on a five-match win streak.

“Kara is one of the best competitors on the team. She has every shot in the book and she uses them in every match that she plays,” Etzkin said.

Sophomore Alex Power will once give the Vikings a spark in the middle of the lineup, after posting a 7-1 record in league matches last season, including a 4-0 mark at the No. 5 position.

“Alex is coming off a very good freshman year, in which she improved her court sense and became a great competitor for us. She always finds a way to win and if you beat her you have really earned it,” Etzkin said.

Janek, who missed part of last season due to injuries, returns to the lineup for the Vikings looking to have a solid junior season. Last year Janek posted a 12-12 mark, including a pair of wins in league play.

“After being injured at the end of the season last year, Nicole is hun-gry to stay healthy and be in the lineup at the end of the year for us when it counts the most. She continues to mature as a player, and she will be another leader for us this season, on and off the court,” Etzkin said.

Liu, who posted a 17-6 record last season, will be competing for a spot in the starting lineup for CSU. Liu tallied a 5-1 record in league play last season, including a 4-1 record at the No. 6 position.

“Mengdi can be another very good player for us, playing her best tennis consistently is the goal for her this season. She will definitely be competing for a starting spot in the lineup,” Etzkin said.

The Vikings will once again have a strong doubles rotation for the spring season, inlcuding the No. 1 duo of Lazaris and Bjerrehus who ad-vanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Regionals this fall.

“Maria and Catrine continue to be a dynamic doubles team for us, and hopefully they can carry their momentum from the fall season into the spring and be a dominant force in the league,” Etzkin said.

The tandem of Power and Bush will start the season at the No. 2 dou-bles position after posting a 13-8 record last year, including a 6-2 mark in league play. The final doubles spot will be a combination of Liu, Sher-wood and Janek.

“I am very confident in any of the combinations that we put on the court for doubles play. The goal at the start of the spring season will be to figure out what the best lineup is for us down the stretch,” Etzkin said.

Success is becoming commonplace for Cleveland State tennis coach Brian Etzkin. As he enters his 10th season with the women’s tennis program, Etzkin is ready to lead the Vikings to their eighth straight winning season.

Last year, Etzkin led the Vikings to their first-ever appearance in the Horizon League Champion-ship match as CSU entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed for the second straight season. CSU, who defeated No. 3 Butler during the semifinals, came up just short during the championship match, as they fell to UIC who was the No. 1 seed.

Etzkin became the head coach at CSU in 2002-03, taking over a women’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. And the change came quickly, as the Vikings won 10 matches during Etzkin’s second year and have finished .500 or better in seven of his nine seasons.

The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone dur-ing the 2009-10 season, recording his 100th career victory with the women’s pro-gram. Entering the 2011-12 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 122-120 at the helm of the Vikings.

Etzkin’s accolades have earned him a pair of Horizon League Coach of the Year awards, as he earned the honor last season and following the 2004 season. He has also mentored two women’s players to the all-league first team, as Sarah Galon earned a spot on the team during all four years of her career (2004, ’05, ’06, ’07), and current senior Catrine Bjerrehus is on her way to the same accomplishment, having earned the award during her first three seasons (2009, ’10, ’11).

The Vikings are just as impressive off the court also, as Sanda Bjelan, Alex Power and Bjerrehus were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year and the women’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors the past seven seasons.

Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsman-ship Award, including Galon who was a two-time recipient (2006, 2007). Charlotte Gibbons (2010) and Morgan Ungerott (2008) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU.

Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 10 years three members of the women’s tennis team have been involved with the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advisory Council, including current Viking Nicole Janek who is serving as the secretary this year. During 2006 Galon served as the vice president and Ungerott serced as the secretary.

In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank and adopting a sec-ond grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland. At the food bank, the student-athletes do anything from sort and package food to put together boxes that will be sent out to those in need. When the Vikings visit the elementary school, they assist students with their reading, comprehension and vo-cabulary skills.

Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator.

Etzkin played college tennis for four years at Southern-Illinois Universi-ty-Carbondale, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior in 1998, he received GTE Academic All-American honors and was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic selection.

He later returned to school, earning a master’s degree in sport manage-ment from Western Illinois in 2000.

assistant coach // thirD season

Jay Tee, a former standout in the men’s tennis program at Cleveland State, is returning for his third season as an assistant coach with the Vikings.

Last season Tee helped guide CSU to its first ever appearance in the Horizon League Championship match, while the Vikings have also posted a win-ning record in each of his three seasons.

Tee was a member of the men’s team from 2002-06 and compiled more than 40 wins in singles, playing mostly at the No. 2 position. He is ranked 10th on the all-time singles wins list at CSU and recorded a 58-46 doubles mark, playing mostly at the No. 1 position.

The 2002-03 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, Tee was selected to the All-Horizon League second team four times throughout his tenure at Cleveland State. He also served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a se-nior.

Tee graduated from CSU in 2006 with a degree in history and served as an As-sistant Tennis Professional at Lake Toxaway Country Club in North Carolina in 2007. He then held the position of Director of Junior Development at the Asheville Racquet and Fitbess Club from 2007-09.

For the first time in program history, head coach Brian Etzkin led the Vikings to the Championship match of the Horizon League Tournament last year, after ending the reg-ular season with a second place finish for the second consecutive year.

CSU’s success started during the fall season, as the Vikings combined for a 39-20 singles record during fall tournaments and an 18-17 doubles record. Sophomore Mengdi Liu was the highlight during the fall season, as she captured a pair of singles titles. Liu, who finished with a 9-0 record during the fall, won the No. 8 singles title at the Bowling Green Invitational and then claimed the Draw E singles title at the MSU Invitational.

Sanda Bjelan and Alexandra Bush were the only tandem to earn a doubles title through-out the fall, capturing the No. 4 doubles crown at the Bowling Green Invitational.

Three Vikings posted victories at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship, including Nicole Janek and Alex Power who each won their opening round singles matches. Janek also paired with Catrine Bjerrehus to claim a dou-bles win at the regional event.

After a slow start to open the season, the Vikings were final-ly able to record back-to-back victories after sweeping St. Bo-naventure (7-0) and defeating Dayton (6-1) to even their record at 3-3.

Despite going 0-5 over the next three weeks, CSU rebounded and posted five victories during their next seven matches including Horizon League victories over Green Bay, Milwaukee and Valparaiso.

The Vikings’ lone blemish on their league record came midway through the spring season, as they fell to league-leader UIC (6-1). CSU then closed out the regular season with four straight victories, earning the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament for the second consecutive season.

After tying the program record with a second place regular season finish with a record of 7-1, the Vikings received a bye into the semifinals where they eventually faced No. 3 Butler. After losing the doubles point, CSU ral-lied to win four straight singles matches, with victories from Bjerrehus, Liu, Kara Sherwood and Alex Power to advance to the championship match for the first time in school history.

The Vikings went up against tough competition in the championship match, facing UIC, who had won 14 straight titles entering the 2011 season. Bush earned the lone point for CSU, posting a win at No. 2 singles, as the Vikings fell to UIC, 4-1 in the championship match.

Bjerrehus and Bush were each honored for their work throughout the sea-son, Bjerrehus earning first team all-league honors and Bush earning sec-ond team all-league honors. Etzkin was also honored by the league, as he was named the Co-Coach of the Year, marking the second time that he has earned the accolade.

th e horizon League

In its 33rd season of operation in the 2011-12 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and pri-vate institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic perfor-mance (competition), academic achievement (learning), community outreach (service), and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experi-ence. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic univer-sity experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the princi-pals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basket-ball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and div-ing, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and vol-leyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s vol-leyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PrOuD hISTOrYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference

with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s

sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the con-ference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive posi-tions.

AThLETIC SuCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprec-

edented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s sec-ond consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball champi-onship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. The Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all col-legiate conferences for winning percentage.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tourna-ment, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play.

Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SuCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as

more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 stu-dent-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All-America honors.

COMMuNITY SErVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has

secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initia-tives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elemen-tary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.

The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis

during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for olympians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer aware-ness during its annual women’s basketball championship.

On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

SPOrTSMANShIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering colle-

gial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOgrAPhICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more

than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audi-ence.

gOVErNANCEThe Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised

of the ten member institutions’ chief executive officers. Dr. Ronald Berkman, President of Cleveland State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2012. John Parry, Director of Athletics at Cleveland State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Beth Goetz, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Butler, is the Vice Chair and Shelia Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

LEADErShIPJonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 20th year as Commissioner of

the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80).

LeCrone is in the final year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a five-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITYThe Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a num-

ber of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.
