TeD.com is a website dedicated to spreading worthwhile information around the globe. The site contains hundreds of talks given on hundreds of subjects. As of this writing, the sixth most watched video on their site – with more than 7 million views – features the ideas of a gentleman named simon sinek. in his 18 minute speech, “How great leaders inspire action”, Mr. sinek explains that people are attracted to products, causes, and ideas based on the “why” of that product, cause or idea rather than the “what”. According to Mr. sinek, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”

We have the privilege of telling Maryhurst’s story to hundreds of individuals each year. After hearing Mr. sinek’s speech, we realized that we frequently begin our conversations by telling what Maryhurst does – “we work with severely traumatized children who have been the victims of unimaginable abuse”. From there we may venture into the how – Maryhurst provides a wide variety of programs including residential treatment, community-based group homes, and therapeutic foster care and adoption.

Our what and our how are very good – but the heart of our work is the why. Maryhurst is a place of new beginnings. We believe in hope and its power to heal broken lives. We believe every child deserves to feel loved and supported. We believe we can make a difference with every youth who comes through our doors.

Our agency values – individual worth, mercy, reconciliation, and zeal (love in action) – inform and shape the why behind our work. According to Mr. sinek, people may become interested in our work because of the what, but they won’t join us in our work without the why. The why speaks to us individually and touches us at the core of who we are. The why motivates us and pushes us into action. Mr. sinek uses the example of Martin Luther King’s “i have a dream” speech. On that hot August day, 250,000 people joined Dr. King in Washington, D.C., not just because he was a great orator and not just because he believed in equality – but rather because they believed in equality.

Maryhurst has been blessed for almost 170 years to have been supported by people in our community who are moved to action by the why of our work. The generous people who support our efforts do so because they, too, believe in children and in hope. They believe in transformation. They believe we can help a child move from the tragedies of her past to hope for the future.

During this past year we began working with a specialized group of adolescent girls whose behaviors and emotional struggles are so severe they normally would be sent out of state for treatment. We knew that accepting these highly traumatized children would stretch us and challenge us like never before, but we had no choice – this is our mission – it’s why we are here.

Thank you to all of you who have joined us in our work – who not only believe in what we do and how we do it, but also in why we do it. This work is too big for us to do on our own, and it is only through your help that we can make a difference in children’s lives.

Hope and healing happen here.

Alicia’s life was filled with chaos before she came to Maryhurst. With a father in prison on drug charges and a mother on the run from the law, Alicia had been placed with her grandparents, but they couldn’t control her defiant, self-destructive behavior. Only 12 years old, Alicia had failed in seven different placements, including two hospitals, in the nine months before coming through our doors. she was distant and hopeless, frequently allowing her hair to hang down over her face to shield her from interactions with others.

Placed in our Des Anges cottage, Alicia acted out her anger through aggression towards anyone and anything in her path. Over time, though, the staff slowly began convincing Alicia that she had value and that she could change her life. she began to see how her actions had consequences – both good and bad – and this was very empowering for her.she benefitted tremendously from therapy and did her very best in school – feeling successful for the first time in her life.

near the end of the 12 months that Alicia was on our campus, the courts terminated her parents’ rights, freeing her for adoption. After a successful release from our euphrasia program, Alicia was placed in a wonderful home and soon thereafter was adopted into a new “forever” family.

Today, Alicia is a confident 17 year old, high school junior. she works part-time at sonic and is in both the concert choir and women’s choir at school. As a fun note, she auditioned for The Voice and American Idol this past year.

Maria struggled with physical and verbal aggression before coming to Maryhurst at 17 years of age. she had a history of suspected substance abuse and significant sexual acting out. Although quite intelligent, Maria’s school behaviors caused her frequent problems. Like most of our children, Maria had been through multiple placements before coming in to our care. Her parents’ rights were terminated along the way, leaving her with no family resources. Maria is very bright and excelled academically. she had definite plans for college, but transitions were always hard for her. From our campus, she moved to Rosehaven, one of our community-based group homes designed to help youth with the move to college. While she was excited about the opportunities that awaited her at Rosehaven, she was very anxious about being in a new place with new staff and new peers. With some expert coaching, though, Maria made a smooth transition to Rosehaven and quickly began blossoming there. Our staff worked with Maria on all sorts of independent living skills – budgeting, planning meals, cooking,

“I was in Maryhurst in 2008, and I can

definitely say that y’all helped me a lot!

Everyone always made me feel so good

about myself, and you gave me the tools

that turned me into who I am today.

THANK YOU!” – Samantha

LaToya was 11 years old when she came to Maryhurst’s euphrasia program from a psychiatric hospital. During her first few weeks, LaToya exhibited extreme aggression and was one of the worst cases of educational neglect we had ever seen. she did not know her birthday or her ABC’s and could barely write her name. she had no idea how to complete any form of basic hygiene. she made no eye contact and spoke with single words and animal noises.

Despite these phenomenal obstacles, our amazing staff bonded on a very deep level with this child and lovingly, patiently taught her how to care for herself. One staff person in particular made it her mission to teach LaToya how to say her ABC’s. When this finally happened, an e-mail went out to all Maryhurst staff letting them know of LaToya’s huge accomplishment.

This summer, LaToya participated in Maryhurst’s special activities program and actually learned to swim. in August, she enrolled in a special education class in one of our local schools, and the teacher reports she is a “joy”. she is learning basic math and how to read. she now communicates with full sentences and seems happy to talk to others. in a recent treatment team meeting, she actually said to our staff, “i feel safe here”. Her transformation has been amazing, and in what will truly be a miracle, we are hoping to transition her to a foster home in early 2013. A recent e-mail from LaToya’s state social worker stated: “You all do wonders with kids.”

setting up a bank account, finding a job, interviewing skills, basic first aid – and many other things that have to be mastered in the adult world.

While at Rosehaven, Maria graduated from Maryhurst’s school and secured a job at Kroger. she is now 18 years old and has been at this job for more than seven months. she recently was even given a supervisor position!

Maria started school at Jefferson Community and Technical College and is in their ULTRA program that will allow her to transition to U of L once she receives her associate degree. she recently made the decision to move into an independent living program where she would have her own apartment, and Maryhurst staff turned moving day into a great celebration.

“I liked – no LOVED Maryhurst because

they were competent, caring people who

cared about me even though there were

times I was rough around the edges!

I commend them for putting up with me

and bothering with me. Maryhurst gave

me the stability I needed.” – Rachel

“I spent two years of my life at Maryhurst

with some of the most loving people I

have ever met. I can honestly say that if I

hadn’t been placed there, I would not be

here today. Your program is so important

because it provides the structure, love and

nurturing a child needs. Thank you for

that.” – Jennifer

Maryhurst relies on the generosity of various foundations, businesses and individuals in our community to help us meet our children’s needs. each year, we must raise close to $2 million in private funds to ensure our children are getting the very best care. We offer our sincerest appreciation and heartfelt thanks.

“I can’t express enough how grateful I am for your

organization and your wonderful staff. Megan has been

a part of Maryhurst for several years. There have been

times in Megan’s life that I thought she would never

come home. You made six years of prayers come true.

It wasn’t always easy but it was always worth it. My

family and I will forever be grateful to Maryhurst.

I want to thank all the members of Maryhurst who made

this day happen. It’s like a dream come true. We want to

wish all the girls happiness in the future. God bless All!!”

Maryhurst was the first agency and still one of only two agencies that serve youth meeting specialized services criteria. Within the fiscal year, 45 youth meeting this criteria were served by Maryhurst staff.

80% of youth served by Maryhurst within the fiscal year have achieved the majority of their treatment goals.

According to the Children’s Review Program, 85% of clients who successfully complete Maryhust’s campus-based residential treatment program are still thriving four months later in the place to which they were discharged.
