2011 SEASON PREVIEW2011 SEASON PREVIEW

Southeastern Louisiana University

Southeastern Louisiana head coachPete Langlois is confident that his 2011Lady Lions are much improved and readyto be a factor in the SouthlandConference.

With five returning starters - a groupthat includes returning All-Southland per-formers Katie Duhe (Lutcher, La.),Jordan Logan (Garden Grove, Calif.) andMeghan Gomez (Alvin, Texas) – and atalented crop of 10 newcomers, Langloisbelieves that this season’s team will be inthe mix for its first Southland ConferenceTournament berth since 2008.

Langlois believes the increased depthof his roster, as well as the improvementof several young returners will pay divi-dends on and off the field.

“We’re really pleased with the talent wehave in place,” Langlois commented. “Wehave a good group of returners, but theyhave some pressure on them this year. They have to understand the role we areasking them to play. The biggest key forus is that everyone on this team puts theteam’s needs over their individual needs.”

One player whose role is clearlydefined is Duhe, a preseason first teamAll-Southland performer. The seniorreturns after leading the team with a .363batting average, while also hitting fivehome runs and driving in 23 runs. TheLutcher native ended the season with aschool-record tying 14-game hitting streak

and is the team’s undisputed top threat inthe middle of the order.

Duhe will once again split time betweensecond base and shortstop this season.Freshman Megan McCollum (Lafayette,La.) has impressed as second base duringpreseason drills, while fellow freshmanAly Williams (Katy, Texas) has shownadeptness at shortstop.

“Katie’s been great for us since the dayshe got here and we’re going to count onher to be our leader offensively and runour middle infield, whether it’s at secondor short,” Langlois commented. “We’vebeen really pleased with what Megan andAly have shown leading up to the seasonand both of them will get their chances toearn playing time.”

Senior and three-year starter Tamra

Ladnier (Hernando, Miss.) returns at firstbase, where she has established herselfas one of the league’s premier defensivefirst basemen. Langlois will look to Ladnierto continue to improve her offensive out-put, as freshman Tori Sheppard

(Houston, Texas) and her ability at theplate will have her pushing for playingtime.

“Tamra’s so smooth over at first baseand we count on her to run the defense,”Langlois commented. “She’s improved atthe plate during her time here, but we stillneed more production from her offensive-

ly. Tori’s good enough at the plate, whereeven when she doesn’t spell Tamra atfirst, she’ll see some time at designatedplayer.”

Over at third, junior Lauren Coniglio

(LaPlace, La.) returns as the starter.Newcomers Trish Bliss (Lafayette, La.),Megan Moore (Elgin, Texas) and Kenzie

Howe (Hammond, La.) are all in the run-ning to compete for playing time at third.

“We expect Lauren to be muchimproved both offensively and defensive-ly,” Langlois said. “She’s going to need tobe ready to go from the start, becausewe’ve got several players we feel comfort-able putting out there at third.”

Gomez, who led the Lady Lions withseven home runs in 2010, and seniorHeather Grivas (Lakewood, Wash.) returnas the top two catchers for the Lady Lions. However, both will be pushed by freshmanHali Westmoreland (Walker, La.), whoseperformance behind the plate has drawnthe attention of Langlois.

“We’re going to have a hard time keep-ing Meghan’s bat out of the lineup, so shecould serve as the DP, play some outfieldand catch for us depending on what weneed,” Langlois commented. “Right now,Hali’s our best defensive option behind theplate. She’s everything we’re looking fordefensively. She’ll see a lot of time backthere.”

The outfield corps is arguably the team’sdeepest position. Logan returns after a2010 campaign that saw her hit .303 andlead the team with 50 hits. SophomoreKelsey Nichols (Alvin, Texas) hit .319 ayear ago after moving into the startinglineup midway through the year.

Sophomore returner Michelle Duhe

(Lutcher, La.) and Centenary transferKatie Matthews (Spring, Texas) will alsosee work in the outfield.

“We’re going with the hot hand in theoutfield,” Langlois said of his most wideopen position. “The speed of Jordan andMichelle make both of them dangerous atthe top of the lineup. On the other hand,Katie and Kelsey both have some popand could help us in the middle of thelineup.

“We should be much improved offen-sively, simply because we have so manymore options this season,” Langloisadded. “If someone’s not getting it doneat the plate, we’ll have someone we canreplace them with. That’s a luxury wehonestly haven’t had the last year or two.”

Langlois also looks for the team’s per-formance in the circle to show markedimprovement. Sophomore Kati Morse

(Ponchatoula, La.), senior Bailey Zievert

(Vinton, La.), junior Vicki Honeycutt (St.Francisville, La.) and sophomore Elise

Kittrell (Boca Raton, Fla.) all return.Newcomers Jessie Browne (Zachary,

La.), Kenna Terry (Baytown, Texas) andMoore all should see action in the circle.

“We think Kati and Jessie will likely beour primary weekend starters,” Langloiscommented. “Kati did some good thingsas a freshman and she’s impressed up bycoming back this spring as a better andmore mature pitcher. She’s worked hardto improve and we feel like the differenceis going to be evident on the field.

“Jessie’s a special talent,” Langloisadded. “She’s blessed with a lot of physi-cal ability and she’s going to be a forceimmediately for us. Jessie’s alsoimpressed us a great deal with her per-formance at the plate. We’re very fortu-nate to have her for the next four years.Kenna’s unique style is going to be agood change of pace for us and we’vealso got a lot of confidence in Vicki andBailey to give us some good innings.”

Though the Lady Lions were picked atthe bottom of the Southland Conferencepolls, Langlois believes the team has achance to surprise people.

“We’re better this year, there’s no doubt,”Langlois said. “Now it’s time for us to goout there and prove it.”

Langlois is no stranger to post-season play, having led seven teams tothe conference tournament as a memberof the Southland Conference and theTrans America Athletic Conference. Duringhis tenure, the Lady Lion program hascontinued to grow and improve.

The upgrading of Southeastern'shome facility, North Oak Park, has beenone of the top accomplishments ofLanglois’ tenure. The facility has had apress box, upgraded dugouts, a brickfence along the foul lines and a newscoreboard installed over the past threeseasons. In the offseason leading up tothe 2010 season, turf was laid in theteam’s gym area to give the Lady Lions anindoor hitting facility. New outdoor battingcages and a new ticket booth/entrancewere also added. Southeastern’s homefield is considered to be one of the topfacilities in the SLC and the immediatearea.

Over the past 10 seasons,Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy ofindividual accolades including 38 all-SLCselections (six first team) and 18 all-Louisiana picks. In 2004, Summer

Delaneuville was named LouisianaNewcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith -the school's career leader in home runs -was named first-team all-SLC and all-Louisiana. HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOISHEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS

Southeastern Louisiana University

Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeasternbreak the single-season home run recordfor the second straight year, hitting 43home runs as a team.

In 2007, Ray was a first team All-SLC choice and Arica Rodriguez wasnamed Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions tied the school record with31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers' 55-game winning streak versus in-stateschools. Ray set school records with 21victories and eight shutouts. Langlois alsoearned his 300th career win during the2007 campaign.

The 2001 season provided per-haps the finest season ever forSoutheastern softball as Langlois' Lionsbroke or tied 14 school and individual sin-gle-season and single-game records andplaced five on the Southland Conferencepost season teams en route to the firstwinning season since 1998. Most notice-ably, the squad tied the all-time record forsingle-season wins with 31, set a newmark for winning percentage in a singleyear winning 59 percent (31-22) of itsgames and won more conference gamesthan ever before (16). The team also tiedthe school-record for wins in the post-sea-son tournament with two as the LadyLions knocked off the second and third-seeded teams finishing with a 2-2 recordand nabbing third place honors.

The 2002 season wasn’t quite asgood as 2001, but the finish was almostsweeter for Langlois as his team headedback to the Southland ConferenceTournament after a fifth place league fin-ish. The Lions didn't win quite as manygames or set as many records as the '01squad, but the 2002 team did, for the firsttime ever, make back-to-back trips to theSouthland Conference Tournament andcame within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament hostNorthwestern State in the semifinals to fin-ish third in the event for the secondstraight year.

In 1998, Langlois led the LadyLions into the Southland Conference andset the school's all-time record for winswith 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament

while also setting numerous standards inthe record books.

And the Southland Conference iscertainly a place where the softball mentoris no stranger. As a former pitching andhitting coach for Nicholls State, Langloiscontributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenom-enal season of 1994 when they posted a51-15 season and were SouthlandConference Co-Champions.

Following his stint at Nicholls,Langlois joined the Southeastern staff asan assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resignedto take a similar position at BaylorUniversity in the middle of the season,Langlois was the obvious choice to leadthe Lady Lions.

Langlois picked up the duties asinterim head coach, finishing the seasonwith an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 withhim at the helm. He was appointed ashead coach following the season in June1995 and has taken over the softball pro-gram full force.

Langlois has compiled an overallcoaching record of 333-471 but hasrecorded 20+ wins in nine of his last 11campaigns. In his time at Southeastern,he has guided two All-South Region play-ers, 21 All-Louisiana team members, 43all-Conference players, 14 conference all-Academic team members and threeCoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.

Before entering the collegiateranks, Langlois was a successful clubcoach in his native Baton Rouge.

Langlois received a bachelor’sdegree in business education fromSoutheastern in 1993. He is the proudfather of daughters, Malorie (11) andMacie (7). Langlois married the formerYvette Miller in May 2008 and the couplewill welcome their first son, Jacques, dur-ing the early part of the 2011 season.

The renovation of North Oak Park has been one of Langlois’ top accomplishments
