Saint Michael’s College, one of the nation’s Best Liberal Art
Colleges in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges by U.S News Media
Group, and one of The Princeton Review’s Best 371 Colleges, is a
Catholic liberal arts college committed to creating a life-changing
educational experience for students from throughout New England,
the nation and the world.
Saint Michael’s involves 1,900 undergraduate students in an on-
campus residential community characterized by lifelong volunteer
service, global perspectives and exceptional teaching in traditional
arts and sciences, as well as contemporary fields of study. The
College is situated on 440 scenic acres overlooking Burlington and
Lake Champlain, with superlative views of Vermont’s Green
Mountains. The Saint Michael’s community is further enriched by
approximately 500 graduate students and 200 international students
in the College’s School of International Studies, one of the nation’s
oldest intensive English language institutes.
A vibrant campus experience encompasses everything from
sports to academic enrichment, to the fine and performing arts, to
the unique international character of the college. Saint Michael’s is
known as a terrific place for students who want to make the world a
better place, as service to the community and to all humankind is a
vibrant part of student life, reflecting the heritage of service of the
Edmundite priests who founded Saint Michael’s--the one and only
Edmundite college in the world--in 1904. Today, more than 70 per-
cent of the student body actively pursues community service proj-
ects through Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (M.O.V.E.), reflect-
ing a unique passion for social justice issues on campus.
With nearly 100 percent of undergraduates living on campus,
residential life is designed to enable academic pursuits, co-curricular
activities, and the pure enjoyment of the college years and the
Vermont experience to converge in a total Saint Michael’s College
experience. The Tarrant Recreation Center and Ross Sports Center
form the epicenter for athletic and recreational activities on campus.
The College offers 21 intercollegiate sports that compete at the
NCAA Division II level with all but four teams participating in the
highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference, the second-largest
Division II conference in the nation.
For students who are looking for something slightly less com-
petitive, there is a wide variety of club and intramural sports such as
rugby, basketball, softball and even table tennis. Our acclaimed
Wilderness Program also bring students into the great Vermont out-
doors for adventure sports and survival training, from beginner to
advanced certification levels.
Saint Michael’s is home to Greater Burlington’s only Actor’s
Equity professional summer theater, the Saint Michael’s Playhouse.
On North Campus at historic Fort Ethan Allen, the Elley-Long
Music Center at Saint Michael’s College is headquarters for the
Vermont Youth Orchestra Association and provides rehearsal and
performance space for the Vermont Mozart Festival. In recent years
Saint Michael’s students and professors have received Rhodes,
Woodrow Wilson, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Science
Foundation and other grants, and Saint Michael’s professors have
been named Vermont Professor of the Year in four of the last nine
years.
Saint Michael’s rose 12 spots to 93rd on the National Liberal
Arts Colleges list in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges by U.S.
News Media Group.

Paul Schimoler
Head Coach
Eighth Season
Paul Schimoler, the winningest
coach in program history, enters his
eighth year as Saint Michael’s men’s
lacrosse coach in 2011. In his seven
years at Saint Michael’s, Schimoler has
guided the Purple Knights to a 51-50
record and a .505 winning percentage
(39-29 record and .574 winning per-
centage in Northeast-10 Conference
regular-season action).
After compiling a 4-10 season in 2004, Schimoler led Saint
Michael’s to the biggest turnaround in program history in 2005,
going 8-6 and earning a berth in the NE-10 playoffs. In 2006,
Schimoler guided the Purple Knights to a 9-6 record, including a
home playoff win versus Bentley University to advance to the NE-
10 Semifinals. Completing a 9-7 season in 2007, the Purple Knights
again hosted and won an NE-10 playoff contest.
In 2008, Saint Michael’s finished with an 8-7 record, marking
just the second time in program history Saint Michael’s earned four
straight winning seasons (a five-year run from 1985-89 is the
longest). Schimoler’s 2009 squad compiled a 7-7 record, the team’s
fifth straight .500-or-better season, and earned a home playoff game
for the fifth straight season. And in 2010, Saint Michael’s went .500
in conference play, the sixth straight season the program has reached
that milestone in league action.
Schimoler has done so in large part due to his widespread
recruiting efforts. That, in addition to the Duffy Turf Field project
completed in August of 2005, has helped the men’s lacrosse pro-
gram sustain an unprecedented level of excellence.
During his time at Saint Michael’s, Schimoler has also been a
member of the United States World Team Selection Committee,
which helped pick the players who represented the country at the
2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in
London, Ontario. He has also been a featured speaker at the 2005
National U.S. Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.
A 1989 graduate of Cornell University, he was a four time All-
Ivy and All-American selection and the Ivy League Rookie of the
Year as a freshman. During his sophomore year the Big Red were
crowned Ivy League Champions and were NCAA Division I run-
ners-up in 1987 and 1988. In his final campaign he was named Ivy
Player of the Year and was selected to the North-South team.
Schimoler holds the Division I record for most saves in an NCAA
Tournament (85, in 1988).
As a result of his legendary collegiate career, Schimoler was
inducted into the Cornell Hall of Fame in 1999. He also earned
induction into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame
in 2004, and the Port Washington (N.Y.) Youth Activities Hall of
Fame in 2009.
For the three seasons prior to joining Saint Michael’s, Schimoler
was an assistant coach for Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, leading the Engineers to a 10-3 mark and a No. 19 nation-
al ranking in 2003. From 1992-94 he served as an assistant coach for
his alma mater, Cornell, where he helped with the recruiting effort,
organized team practices, and monitored the academic and athletic
development of the players.
For nearly two decades, he has been an instructor at numerous
lacrosse camps throughout the country. He has been a guest speak-
er at regional and national clinics including the U.S. Lacrosse
Foundation Vermont Chapter coaches’ clinic. He also co-developed
and produced the lacrosse goaltending video “Peak Performance” in
1992 and that same year organized the “Stick it in Stowe” tourna-
ment.
He has extensive post-collegiate playing experience as a mem-
ber of the 1990 and 1994 World Teams, both of which were gold
winners. He was drafted by the Boston Cannons of the Major
Lacrosse League in 2001 and played club lacrosse in the USCLA
where he was active in the national tournament circuit. He is still
active in various men’s lacrosse leagues.
“Paul’s impressive playing and coaching stints at Cornell
University, and most recently Rensselaer, make him a great role
model for our student-athletes both on and off the field,” said Saint
Michael’s Athletics Director Geri Knortz at the time of Schimoler’s
hiring. “We are thrilled to have him to Saint Michael’s.”

Assistant Coach Pat IvoryPat Ivory ’08
Assistant Coach
Third Season
Pat Ivory, a four-year member of
the Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse
team from 2005-08, remains with the
squad for his third season as an assis-
tant coach in 2011. In his first season
as an assistant coach in 2009, he
helped lead Saint Michael’s to a 7-7
record and a home playoff contest. In
2010, Ivory and the Purple Knights earned another .500-or-better
conference mark.
Ivory, a defender during his playing career, helped Saint
Michael’s record four straight winning seasons during his career. As
a senior in 2008, Ivory appeared in all but one contest, starting six
games, and had 11 ground balls.
A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Ivory graduated from Saint
Michael’s in 2008 with a degree in history, and was a Dean’s List stu-
dent as an undergraduate.
Ivory has assisted with several of Saint Michael’s instructional
camps, and he currently directs the youth and high school lacrosse
programs at the Field House in Shelburne, Vt.
Ivory, who resides in Burlington, has a younger brother, Ryan,
who plays on the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team.
6 www.smcathletics.com
The Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse team narrowly missed quali-
fying for the playoffs for the sixth straight season in 2010, as three
consecutive one-goal losses doomed the Purple Knights. However,
Saint Michael’s still finished with a .500 Northeast-10 Conference
record, and has the ability to return to the postseason in 2011 under
eighth-year head coach Paul Schimoler thanks to an influx of
incoming talent.
Seniors
The 2011 Purple Knights are a young squad, with just two sen-
iors leading the team.
Ryan Clunan emerged as an everyday started for Saint
Michael’s last season, and was a force on defense, leading the team
with 41 ground balls and 18 caused
turnovers. An NEILA Division II
Preseason selection this season,
Clunan anchors an above-average
Saint Michael’s defensive corps.
Seth Metayer, like Clunan, is
back for his fourth and final season
this spring. He was second on the
team with 43 faceoffs wins last season,
and is expected to serve a similar role
this spring, with the hope to win more
than half of his faceoff opportunities.
Juniors
Ten juniors will fill a variety of
needs for Saint Michael’s in 2011.
Joining Clunan and Metayer as
captains are midfielders Kevin Hunt
and Peter Hamson. Both players fin-
ished with seven goals and five assists
last season, but have very different
impacts on the team. Hanson is
arguably the team’s best faceoff
option, winning 48 last season, while
Hunt will be expected to be one of
the squad’s top offensive options this
spring, after serving as a complimen-
tary player his first two seasons.
The team’s best offensive weapon last year was Andrew
Buccellato. He tallied a team-high 30 goals and 41 points last year,
and is particularly effective with the man-advantage. Buccellato
could score even more this spring.
Three juniors in particular will be key on defense for Saint
Michael’s in 2011: Paul Sapia, Andrew Sherman and Evan White.
The trio combined to play in 34 games last season, including 26
starts (13 for Sherman), and combined for 48 ground balls. All three
could serve as starters again this spring, particularly Sherman, while
White has the ability to aid the offensive attack.
Completing the large junior class are a quartet of players that
should see playing time off the bench. Christian Cook, who netted
four goals in 11 games off the bench last season, has the ability to
score double-digit goals in 2011. Tyler Violette (six games in 2010)
and Garrett Clark (missed last year due to injury) give the defense
lots of depth, aiding the team’s strongest unit. And Paul Tortora,
Jr., who showed promise in five games as a freshman in 2009, is back
with the team following a year’s absence.
Sophomores
Six sophomores - four of whom are attackers - represent an
explosive class.
The top returnee of the group is Pete Donnally, who made an
instant impact in 2010. An NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection last
spring, Donnally was third for Saint Michael’s last season with 18
goals and 26 points, despite missing two games. He could eclipse
those totals this spring, utilizing his speed and skill.
Expected to join Donnally as a strong scoring threat is Marty
Vanzo. A transfer from the University of Vermont, the local prod-
uct should move immediately into the starting lineup for Saint
Michael’s this spring, and could be
among the conference’s leaders in sev-
eral offensive categories.
Also transferring to Saint
Michael’s this spring is Austin
Driscoll, who played at NCAA
Division III Dickinson College in
2009. A quick midfielder and strong
passer, Driscoll can be a factor at both
ends of the field.
Completing the six members of
the Class of 2013 are three returnees
that combined to play in 18 games last
year: attackers D.J. Dauria and Liam
Pushee, and defender Neil Kelly.
Freshmen
The biggest class in program his-
tory, Saint Michael’s welcomes 14 first-
years to the squad this spring.
Three members of the promising
class are goalies, as Saint Michael’s
looks to replace two-year starter Zach
Jandl ’10. Theo Ferguson may get
first crack at securing the starting role,
but Chris Demairo should also see
time, while Andrew Landers will
push both for playing time.
Three others in the large class are attackers. Headlining that
group is Nate Etre, who is expected to play right away for the
Purple Knights, and has the ability to make a similar impact that
Donnally did last season. The other two freshmen attackers are
Evan Antolino and Nick DeThomasis.
A handful of freshmen look to make contributions in the mid-
field this spring, with Max Zuccarini leading that group. He may
jump right into the starting lineup in 2011, taking advantage of his
speed and length. Cooper Quenneville, a Vermont native, should
also see regular playing time, while Connor Glackin and Tim
McDonald are also expected to earn consistent minutes in their first
season at Saint Michael’s. Completing the quintet is Chris Casserly.
Rounding out the large freshman class are a trio of defenders
that may earn minutes despite several upperclassmen above them.
Two in particular expected to make on-field contributions this
spring are Robert Karn, Jr. and Sean Smith, while Cooner
Roohan gives the unit increased depth.
2011 Season Outlook
Junior Andrew Buccellato led Saint Michael’s with 30
goals and 41 points in 2010, and could finish among the
NE-10 leaders in several offensive categories this spring.

The Ross Sports Center pool is home to the Purple

The Tarrant Recreation Center, named after the parents of for-

basketball, tennis, racquetball and squash courts. It also has a 1/8

The Saint Michael’s basketball teams and women’s volleyball team play in the Ross
Sports Center, which was renovated in the summer of 2001. A new state-of-the-
art floor was put down to replace the previous one that existed since the building
opened in 1973. The gym is highly regarded as one of the best Division II facili-
ties in the Northeast.
