NEW YEAR... RU Baseball to unveil its new stadium in 2011 The home of Radford University’s baseball program is changing this season, as the High-landers will be able to turn on the lights for the first time, and welcome fans to a brand-new 700-seat stadium. In addition to the transformation, the project is a historic one for Radford University ath-letics: all funds for the upgrades are being privately raised, a first in the department’s history. The expansion project will give the Highlanders a stadium that is capable of hosting high-level competition, including the Big South Tournament. “The Radford University baseball program has come a long way in three short years,” head coach Joe Raccuia says. “ We have made tremendous strides in all facets of the program, but adding lights and a stadium put a stamp on our development. As an alumnus and head coach of the program I am filled with excitement about the newest facility upgrades.” “We are extremely excited about our new baseball facility,” Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg says. “Bringing this to fruition has been a true team effort and we are so excited about this project and what it means to our student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans.” Using structural elements of the current facility, a 700-seat grandstand is being construct-ed. Spectators will be moved closer to the action, with the first row of red, chair-backed seats beginning three feet from the current backstop. Sight lines in the grandstand will be directed at the center of the field of play. A spacious main concourse level will be positioned at the top of the grandstand. In addition, a new pressbox and sound system is going to be a part of the complex. For the first time, the Highlanders will have the capability to host night games. The sta-dium features lighting standards that meet the requirements of NCAA Regional Tournament host sites. “This facility will allow us to continue to recruit the top athletes and get us another step closer to a championship,” Raccuia says. “Being able to have night games in a stadium will pro-vide a great baseball atmosphere to Radford University, the City of Radford and the New River Valley.” Prior to the start of the 2010 season, upgrades were made to the playing surface and dug-outs, marking the first significant changes to Radford University Baseball Field since it opened in 1986. Carolina Green Corp. Athletic Field Construction was in charge of the project that included a new sod, laser-graded surface of sand-based Tuckahoe bluegrass, and a new irrigation and drainage system underneath the field. New dugouts were also built to fit the changing needs of the program. Both dugouts are 74 feet long, include a deeper bench area with steps up to the field, restrooms, and expanded storage space. Radford University Baseball Field’s expansion project is part of a fundraising campaign spearheaded by the Radford Athletics Club (RAC) and its director, Kelly Underwood. “The support of a select group of alumni, friends, and parents have made the beginning of this project a reality, but we still need the participation of all constituents to realize our dream of a wholly private support-funded capital project,” Underwood says. “Significant funds have been raised to date, but more support is needed. We have structured naming opportunities at all contribution levels so that everyone can leave their mark on this momentous upgrade and significant naming rights remain available for major elements of the facility. The Radford Baseball Indoor Facility gives the Highland-ers a great option to hone skills, any time of year and in any weather conditions. The facility includes three 90 foot batting cages, with the necessary equipment and amenities for live pitching, machine pitching, pitcher’s bullpens, and defensive drills. Located adjacent to campus, the indoor facility can serve the Radford baseball team and Joe Raccuia Baseball Camps year-round, any time the weather restricts outdoor practice or events. At 7,200 square feet, indoor facility rivals the facili-ties of several top schools and conferences throughout the southeast region and across college baseball.

A component that is vital to the Radford athletic pro-gram is the strength and conditioning program. Guiding the program is former Mississippi State baseball and football player Michael Shumaker (pictured, left), who is in his first season working with the Highlanders. Radford University has long been recognized as one of the leaders among Mid-Atlantic schools in its conditioning and strength training. It has been an instrumental part in the success of Radford University sports through the years. The program is designed to help each student-athlete reach his full potential. Each Radford University student-athlete has strength and conditioning programs unique to their goals as a player.

Student-Athlete Support ServicesPLAYER DEVELOPMENT

The office of Student-Athlete Support Services assists student-athletes in achieving academic and personal success through the provision of services that further extend the teaching and learning mission of Radford University. The primary, constant goal is to de-velop graduates and outstanding citizens who have contributed in the areas of athletic competition during their tenures of education. Located in the Dedmon Center, the Learning Enhancement Center is equipped with computer stations, tutorial rooms, and a study lounge. The center provides direction for student-athletes via academic counseling in conjunction with advisors from the respective colleges at Radford University. In an effort to support the mission of the University, the center offers a variety of services and opportuni-ties for student-athletes that encourage the successful attainment of specific academic and personal goals. The sports medicine department within Radford Uni-versity athletics is comprised of certified athletic trainers, licensed physicians and several other health care profession-als who collaborate to optimize performance and provide health care for the student athletes competing on Radford’s 19 intercollegiate teams. This health care delivery team works together in the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, func-tional limitations, and disabilities. The athletic training staff are certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification, and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Jamie Best (pictured), who enters his fourth season with the Radford baseball program, oversees all of the day-to-day care and rehabilitation efforts of the Highlanders. A trusted member of the RU baseball team, Best is NATABOC, VATL, CPR/AED and First Aid ceritified, and is an Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI)

THE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

The Big South Conference is among the nation’s best in college baseball, on a year-by-year basis. In 2010, the Big South’s unofficial RPI* was 11th among the 31 Division I leagues, higher than some “major” confer-ences. Five Big South programs ranked in the top 100 of the RPI (out of 301 DI programs), including Radford at #83. Big South programs are at a geographic advantage in the college game, not only due to the weather, but also due to the ability to test themselves and win against top-five leagues like the SEC, ACC and Conference USA. Exposure is also an advantage. In addition to a number of regional network broadcasts, the Big South is featured each season on ESPNU. Last season, Radford played at Win-throp in the conference’s annual national telecast.

HEAD COACH JOE RACCUIAAn alumnus on a mission...For Radford head baseball coach Joe Raccuia, the Highlander uniform is a comfortable, familiar fit. Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007, when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. His path home has been a busy one, rang-ing from the head coaching job at Marist to an assistant’s position at Alabama. In each case, he’s had a successful run, setting the stage for his return to his alma mater. A Radford uniform is also a winning fit for Raccuia: he’s been a part of 155 total wins as a player (1994-95), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 30 percent of the program’s all-time victories dating back to 1985. In each of his three years the Highlanders have improved on their win total, including a 29-win campaign in 2010, the second-most single-season wins in school history. Entering the 2011 season, Radford is the only Big South school to improve its win total each season over the last five years. Raccuia’s on-field success can be attributed to his work in player development: a nucleus of players that he inherited in the early stages of their careers helped the program turn the corner. Four of those players capped their careers in the 29-win season: Reggie Keen, Tyren Rivers, Ra-phael Turner and Aerik Taylor. Keen finished a solid three years under Raccuia with a .354 career batting average, fourth all-time at Radford; Rivers became the school’s single-season and career stolen bases leader in Raccuia’s offensive system; Turner overcame injuries to post a team triple-crown season as a fifth-year senior; Taylor transferred in and assumed the role of ace starting pitcher in Raccuia’s second season. Alex Gregory and Eric Evans were part of the turnaround and flourished at the beginning of Raccuia’s stint at Radford: Gregory finished his career with back-to-back .400 seasons (2008-09) at the plate under Raccuia, while Evans anchored the pitching staff in 2008 with 14 starts and a 3.34 ERA. Gregory and Evans were both Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft picks. The upward trend continued for Raccuia’s Highlanders in 2010, posting a third-place Big South finish for the first time since 2000, while becoming the first Radford team to hit better than .300 and post an ERA lower than 6.00 since 1995. The Highlanders put pressure on their oppo-nents with a high-octane attack on the basepaths, stealing 143 bases as a team – a new single-season school record. The 2009 season, his second, marked a turnaround for the program when Radford went 26-24 overall and 16-9 in conference play. Radford’s season record was the fifth winning campaign in school history and its 16 conference wins were the program’s second-most all-time. Raccuia’s second season with the Highlanders was marked by a fourth-place finish and No. 4 seed in the Big South conference tournament (second time in program history) and a come-from-behind tourna-ment win against No. 22 Coastal Carolina, 11-7, when the Highlanders trailed 7-6 and were down to their final strike before scoring five ninth-inning runs. Following the 2009 season two of Raccuia’s recruits, shortstop Jeff Kemp and Taylor, were recognized by the Big South along with Gregory. Kemp was named freshman of the year, Gregory and Taylor earned second team all-conference honors, and Gregory was again named to the all- academic team. While his 2009 roster was marked by a host of fresh faces that included Kemp, Taylor, second baseman Brett Mollenhauer and right-handed closer Jason Patten among them, Raccuia got the most out of returning players like Gregory (third straight .400-plus -season) and third baseman Nick Minter (started 49 of 50 games, career-highs in most offensive categories). In Raccuia’s first season with the Highlanders, the team produced 24 wins, the most since Radford won 26 in 2000. The final total was a 14-game turnaround from the 2007 season. Raccuia’s win total in his first season at Radford came with plenty of style points. The Highlanders added four in the win column against NCAA Regional teams, including a victory over Charlotte on the road, and three over in-state rival and CAA Champion James Madison. Radford’s win at Charlotte snapped a 17-game home winning streak for the 49ers, the second-longest home string in the country at the time. Add to that three all-conference selections, (First team – Alex Gregory; second team – Eric Evans, Tyren Rivers) and two all-tournament picks (Gregory, Reggie Keen). Along with quality wins, Radford was able to get off to its best start in school history after seven games (6-1), and concluded the season with four games in the Big South Tournament, the second most in school history. On the whole, it was finest offensive campaign for the program since 1995, Raccuia’s senior season at Radford. The Highlanders bested the .300 mark for the first time since that year, and plated 347 runs (average of six per game), the top mark since ’95.

ASSISTANT COACH BRIAN ANDERSON After working alongside Radford head coach Joe Raccuia at two different stops, Brian Ander-son joined his coaching staff in July of 2007 and has played a large role in engineering the revital-ization of the Highlander program. Anderson’s duties at Radford include serving as the Highlanders’ pitching coach and recruit-ing coordinator, along with assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program, including prac-tice, game-day preparation and scouting. Radford’s pitching staff has continued to improve under Anderson’s guidance – after the team’s ERA dropped by nearly a run upon his arrival in the 2008 season, Radford’s 2010 staff became just the fourth Highlander group to post a winning record and ERA below 6.00. In addition to the team mark, Radford’s Friday-Saturday starting pitchers, Aerik Taylor and Eddie Butler - both Anderson recruits - became just the second tandem of Highlander pitchers to work 85 or more innings in a season while making 14 or more starts. Both Taylor and Butler won six games. Anderson’s 2010 staff exhibited control that ranked among the best nationally – Radford’s pitching staff was 38th in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings (3.15). Individually, Bobby Bolling topped the staff with 1.48 walks per nine innings, 23rd fewest in the land. Bolling, Abram Williams and Brad Wimmer, three of Radford’s six most-used arms, each walked fewer than 14 batters in 2010. Following up a 2008 where he pushed the Radford pitching staff to one of its top performanc-es this decade, Anderson followed it up with more progress in 2009. The Highlander staff was highlighted by Taylor’s Second Team All-Big South honor in his first season as a full-time starter at the Division I level. Taylor led the Radford arms with seven quality starts; as a whole, the Highlanders produced 17 quality starts and the program’s fourth-best ERA since 2000. Anderson helped produce a pair of impact freshmen as well: left-handed starter Paul DeVito posted a 6-3 re-cord and right-handed closer Jason Patten set a new single-season school record with nine saves. Anderson’s first year at Radford was marked by the emergence of left-hander Eric Evans as the ace of the Highlander staff, earning Second Team All-Big South honors in 2008. In his senior season, Evans went 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 starts, and 3-1 record and 1.88 ERA in Big South starts. Evans, a 23rd-round pick of the Rangers in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, continued his success in the professional ranks, going 3-2 with 36 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings between Rookie League and Class A. In his recruiting duties, Anderson has been the lead recruiter in helping the Highlanders land one of their best classes in the early signing period in 2007. Nine of his recruits from that class suited up for the Highlanders in 2009, with most counted on to fill major roles. Following a recruiting class with a distinctly-Maryland flavor, Anderson engineered a 2008 early signing group that included four top high school performers from Virginia. Kyle Werman, a former George Mason assistant coach and standout player at Virginia, was named assistant baseball coach at Radford University in June of 2010. Werman, whose primary on-field assignments will be working with Radford hitters and coach-ing third base, will assist in all aspects of the Highlander program, including recruiting and the team’s day-to-day operations. “Kyle’s offensive philosophy and knowledge of the game make him a great hire for Radford University,” head coach Joe Raccuia said. “We share a similar vision when it comes to the hit-and-run and putting pressure on other teams defensively, and he believes in what we’re doing as a program. In addition, he’s helped teams that he’s coached at George Mason and Virginia advance to Regional play.” A former collegiate and professional player, Werman comes to Radford after two years as the hitting coach under Bill Brown at George Mason. Werman was part of a Patriot team that advanced to NCAA Regional play in 2009, and his offensive coaching abilities helped four Mason position players become MLB First-Year Player Draft picks, including Scott Krieger, Chris Henderson and Justin Bour in 2009, and Ryan Soares in 2010. In Werman’s first season with the Patriots, he helped the team to their best batting average and slugging percentage in school history, and the second-best on-base percentage. The team also scored the second-most runs, had the second-most RBIs and had the third-most homers in school history, all while having one of its better seasons in terms of fewest strikeouts. Mason’s first-ever first team All-America came on his watch as Henderson reached that milestone. Krieger was also named a second team All-America. Last season, Werman’s guidance saw Soares put together a career offensive season. A first team All-America, all-region, and Wallace Award (shortstop of the year) finalist, Soares improved his batting average from .318 in 2009 to a Colonial Athletic Association-best .438, while his power numbers rose, including 13 homers and 71 RBIs. As a team, Mason hit .325 with Soares and Mark Hill (.414) both over the .400 mark. Werman’s coaching resume includes a year at Virginia, where he was a volunteer assistant coach under Brian O’Connor, helping the Cavaliers advance to NCAA Regional play. He previously spent one year as an assistant coach at Oakton High School in Fairfax County. As a player, Werman walked on at Virginia and became a four-year starter at second base for the Cavaliers. He played in 221 career games, second all-time at Virginia, while compiling a .278 batting average. Over his final two seasons, he put together a .988 fielding percentage. A team captain for the Cavaliers, he was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2005 and the 2005 All-Corvallis (Ore.) Regional Team.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT RICK OLIVERI Rick Oliveri is in his second year with the Radford baseball staff as volunteer assistant coach.In his role with the Highlanders, Oliveri works with catchers and hitters, coordinates operations of Joe Raccuia Baseball Camps LLC, and assists with all other aspects of the Radford baseball pro-gram. In his expanded roles this season, Oliveri handles much of the team’s operations, including equipment and travel. The Buffalo, N.Y. native spent the 2009 season at LMU, under head coach Jeff Sziksai, work-ing with the team’s catchers, hitters, and coordinating team operations. On the field, the Rail-splitter backstops made strides defensively under Oliveri’s guidance, doubling their caught stealing totals while helping cut wild pitch totals nearly in half from 2008 to 2009. Oliveri graduated from Canisius High School, Raccuia’s alma mater, before moving on to a four-year career on the diamond for the University at Buffalo. A three-year starter behind the plate for the Bulls, Oliveri was a team captain as both a junior and senior. Oliveri graduated from Buffalo in 2008 with a degree in accounting and finance. He earned his MBA from Lincoln Memorial University in 2010.

A schedule that includes five NCAA Regional opponents and a non-conference group with a combined winning percentage of .523 a year ago is set for the Highlanders in 2011. Of the oppo-nents on Radford’s schedule, Virginia and Coastal Carolina advanced to NCAA Super Regional play, while Auburn, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech were Regional teams. Radford’s 2011 opponents were a combined 41 games over .500 last season. “This is the toughest schedule that we have put together in four years here,” head coach Joe Raccuia said. “It was made for a reason – I feel like this team is capable of handling it. We are get-ting closer to becoming a top-50 program in the RPI, and for us to get over the hump, we have to play challenging games. “We have 10-plus games with ACC and SEC opponents, and teams that have been in regional play over the last couple of years. That, along with our tough Big South schedule, is exciting and challenging, and we are up for that challenge.”

Phil LeftwichCalifornia Angels - 1993-96

Leftwich became the first Highlander in the majorleagues when he joined the California Angels in 1993. The Angels’ top selection in the 1990 Major League draft, he was taken in the second round, leaving RU with 13 school pitch-ing records. A Lynchburg, Va., native, he was 19-14, pitch-ing 25 complete games and 265 innings from 1988-1990. Leftwich is an inaugural RU Athletic Hall of Fame member, elected in 1995.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Line-burg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes.

In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.

His most visible influence to date has been on the Ded-mon Center, where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the centerpiece of Radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008, the facil-ity underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities.

Along with the initial transformations to the Dedmon Cen-ter, an improved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticket office and Learning Enhancement Center (LEC), which houses student-athlete academic support, were completed/added in 2009.

In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Radford University Baseball Field.

Lineburg has also overseen the hires of five new head coaches, as well as six new athletic administrators. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, head men’s soccer coach Marc Reeves and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. Randy Butt, head athletic trainer Chad Hyatt, assistant A.D. for com-munications Joey Beeler, director of student-athlete support services/senior women’s administrator Stephanie Ballein, and Director of Facilities Brad Epperley.

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first-ever NCAA tournament game in any sport.

Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’s tennis and softball Big South regular season title in 2009-10. Mickey Dean’s softball team went on

to win their second straight conference tournament crown before advancing to the Athens, Georgia Regional final with two more NCAA Tournament victories.

He and his staff have also been responsible for creating a five-year strategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilities master plan. Additional achievements include ushering in a new athletics Internet site (RadfordAthletics.com), and helping implement a new ticket system (Ticket Return). Lineburg and his staff have also hosted top-level competition, with five Big South cham-pionships taking place on the Radford campus from 2008-10.

In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different organiza-tions and committees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference on Basketball Improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, and a mem-ber of the selection committee to select Radford University’s Vice President for Advancement.

Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athletics, Lineburg’s corporate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant at SMU. Following his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coach-ing positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro.

A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years.

He earned his Bachelor’s in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in educa-tion from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate as-sistant on the men’s basketball staff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athletic director Norman Lineburg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Superintendent of Bristol City Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at William Byrd H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is in his first season as the offensive coordinator at the University of Richmond.

He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a native of Radford.

61Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth,

and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education.

Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle im-mediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation.

The Radford University strategic plan “7-17”, com-pleted in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University.

Under President Kyle’s leadership, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow gradu-

ate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level pro-grams. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations.

The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body.

A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public

schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dal-las, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary.

President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors. First appointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.

President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cul-tural, professional, financial and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Founda-tion Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth Univer-sity Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a mem-ber of the Board of Directors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company.

Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of three children, son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whitley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.
