The Mountaineers have won at Western Carolina (13-3), N.C. Central (6-0) and Gardner-Webb (8-4). The lone loss was 7-3 at Wake Forest. The probable pitcher, junior right-hander Brandon Boone, has started in five of his six appearances this year. He has a 3.68 ERA in a starting role, as he’s allowed nine earned runs through 22.0 innings. He allowed five hits, recorded seven strikeouts and issued no walks in six scoreless innings against N.C. Central and allowed three hits while striking out seven batters in five innings against Wake Forest. Boone allowed one earned run and struck out five batters over four innings against UNCW in his first career start for App State. He gave up two earned runs in 3.1 innings against Marshall the next weekend. He went 7-0 with a 2.48 ERA and 75 strikeouts (10.33 per game) at Brunswick Community College in 2017. RECAPPING THE SERIES HISTORY Appalachian State has an 11-6 record against the Highlanders in a series that began in 1985. App State swept Radford last season, winning 13-9 in Boone and 7-5 on the road. Tristan Helms picked up the win in relief at home, as the Mountaineers erased a 9-8 deficit with a three-run seventh inning. Conner Leonard hit one of App State’s three homers in the road win, and Radford trailed 7-3 in the ninth. INTRODUCING SOME NEW FACES App State has 13 returning players and 18 newcomers following a 19-36 year in which it stood at 18-24 overall and 7-12 in Sun Belt play before closing vs. South Alabama, Wake Forest and Coastal Carolina. The 18 newcomers are split evenly between nine freshmen and nine transfers, including eight from the junior college level. Four freshmen and four transfers have started in hitting roles, two newcomers have started on the mound and five more newcomers have pitched in relief. WEATHERING THE STORM App State will be playing away from home for the 23rd time in its first 26 games. A three-game home series against Marshall occurred after seven straight road games to open the season, and the trip to Radford will be the Mountaineers’ 16th straight game outside of Boone. All told, App State is now scheduled to play 36 of its 55 regular-season games in North Carolina. Unusually severe winter weather prevented App State from playing home games originally scheduled against UNC Asheville (March 7), Wake Forest (App State traveled to Winston-Salem on March 20 and batted last) and Georgia Southern (the series was moved to Statesboro, Ga.). App State was also set to be the “home” team for a rained-out March 6 game against South Carolina in Charlotte. 2018 SCHEDULE PRIMARY STARTERS (2018 STATS) STORYLINES

TAKING A BOW OUT OF THE BULLPENApp State’s primary relievers have 86 strikeouts in 88.1 innings this season.

Kaleb Bowman (24 Ks in 19.2 IP), Reed Howell (17 Ks in 12.1 IP) and Luke Watts (18 Ks in 16.1 IP) are all averaging more than a strikeout per inning. Cameron Kepley (8 Ks in 9.1 IP) and Andrew Papp (5Ks in 5.2 IP) are close to that figure.

Bowman, a junior transfer from Spartanburg Methodist, has given up no runs, allowed seven hits and struck out 16 batters in his last 12 innings of work.

He struck out five batters and allowed two hits in two scoreless innings of the series opener at Georgia Southern, and strikeouts accounted for three of his four outs in a scoreless appearance last Tuesday, when he picked up his first career victory in the 8-4 win at Gardner-Webb. He pitched three scoreless innings against South Alabama on Saturday.

Last year at Spartanburg Methodist, Bowman had a 4.58 ERA and 5-4 record on the mound with 53 strikeouts in 57 innings.

Kepley and Watts both had two strikeouts in perfect innings to close out the win at Gardner-Webb. Senior left-hander Tristan Helms had five straight scoreless appearances leading up to the South Alabama series, and Watts had given up one run over 7.0 innings in his last eight appearances leading up to the Georgia Southern series. He had scoreless innings against Gardner-Webb and South Alabama.

PRODUCING IN A TIMELY FASHIONThird baseman Drew Beck has posted at least one hit in 16 of his 24 appearances, including each of the last four. He’s hitting .286 with runners on base and has seven RBIs in nine opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs.

Last year at Howard College in Texas, he hit .419 with eight HRs, 59 RBIs and 21 doubles.

ESTABLISHING A NEW STANDARDApp State has set a program record for season-ticket sales, beating the mark established in 2013, the year after the Mountaineers captured a league title and won 41 games, including two in an NCAA Regional.

MAKING THE MOST OF HIS CHANCESenior pitcher Tristan Helms has been picked as one of 30 candidates nationally for the Senior CLASS Award in Division I baseball, which has nearly 300 teams. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Helms is the only candidate from a North Carolina college program and one of only three candidates from the Sun Belt Conference. He walked on to the App State baseball team and, despite being cut two different times, has developed into a valuable relief pitcher for the Mountaineers. A left-handed submarine pitcher who learned a new delivery early in college because he was told the velocity from his standard delivery wasn’t high enough, Helms has a 3.38 ERA through six appearances this season. Academically, Helms has a cumulative GPA of 3.53 as a finance major who plans to become a financial advisor. He is the vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for App State, and he was the university’s representative when the Sun Belt Conference held its on-campus winter meeting in Texas. In the local community, when heavy rain caused severe flooding in Boone in October, Helms and his App State teammates dug trenches and built a roof to protect the porch of a woman’s house that had been affected. Helms also gathered boxes for the Operation Christmas Child project and volunteered time at a Salvation Army during the trip to Arlington.

HITTING THE GROUND RUNNINGWhen App State held a 10-1 lead after three innings at Western Carolina, it was the first time the Mountaineers reached double figures in the first three innings of a game since the 2012 team that won a SoCon title and reached an NCAA Regional scored 10 runs in the first three innings of a 15-4 win against Rider.

App has posted at least 10 hits in five games and nine hits in two more games.

MOVING CLOSER TO FULL STRENGTHFreshman outfielder Kendall McGowan, an opening-day starter, returned to the starting lineup as an outfielder vs. N.C. Central. He has started the last 12 games.

Freshman second baseman Bailey Welch, who started App State’s first 10 games, returned to the lineup at Texas State after missing the previous four games. He has started the last 11 games.

KERMITSMITHHEAD COACHSECOND SEASON498-414-1 OVERALL25-55 AT APP STATE

Kermit Smith was named the 13th head baseball coach of Appalachian State University on July 14, 2016. In Smith’s first year, the Mountaineers finished with 19 wins, including a road victory against nationally ranked Louisiana. Appalachian improved in many facets of the game in its first year under Smith, posting the most home runs and drawn walks since 2012, the lowest team ERA since 2014 and the most strikeouts from the mound since 2010. The Mountaineers had two players from the 2017 team selected in the Major League draft: pitcher Matt Brill (12th round, Arizona Diamondbacks) and catcher Chandler Seagle (30th round, San Diego Padres). Entering his 17th season as a college head coach, Smith spent seven years (2009-16) at Lander, where he was the winningest coach in program history with an overall record of 244-134 (.645). He took the Bearcats to three NCAA tournaments over his final five years. With 16 signees overall, Smith had 12 student-athletes sign contracts with Major League Baseball (MLB) affili-ates while at Lander, including a program-record, four in 2016. The Bearcats advanced to the NCAA Division II Col-lege World Series in Cary twice in his last three seasons, including a second time in 2016, finishing with a 44-16 record. The Bearcats ended the season ranked No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, the highest finish in program history, and Smith was named ABCA/Diamond Southeast Regional Coach of the Year. Smith helped Lander set a program record for single-season wins in 2014, when the Bearcats finished 52-8 overall and ended the season with a No. 4 ranking in the Collegiate Baseball poll. They had the nation’s most prolific offense, leading Division II in home runs and runs scored. The Bearcats won the Southeast Regional and advanced to their first College World Series. Among the highlights of the 2014 season, the Bearcats fin-ished 27-3 on their home field (Dolny Stadium) and Smith was awarded PBC Coach of the Year and Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Freshman pitcher Brandon White was named PBC Freshman of the Year. The Bearcats posted back-to-back 30-win campaigns in 2012 (38 wins) and 2013 (35 wins) for the first time since the 2005-06 seasons. Under Smith in 2012, junior pitcher Chris Thomas won the PBC Pitcher of the Year award, becoming the first Bearcat to ever receive a postseason conference award. In addition, Smith’s 38 wins during the 2012 season broke the pro-

Lander: One PBC Conference Championship, Two NCAA Division II Regional Titles (2014, 2016), Two College World Series (2014, 2016), 2014 Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, 2014 South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, 2016 ABCA/Diamond Southeast Regional Coach of the Year

gram record at the time for wins in a season, and he led the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance. In just his second season at the helm of the Bear-cats, Smith won 29 games, at the time the most for the program since 2006, and took Lander to the PBC tournament for the first time since 1998. Prior to Smith’s tenure at Lander, he spent eight years as Belmont Abbey’s head coach and nine seasons overall with the Crusaders, starting with a one-year stint as an assistant during the 2001 season. Much like in his time at Lander, Smith became the winningest coach in program history on March 5, 2008. While at Belmont Abbey, he claimed two Conference Carolinas regular-season championships, a 2009 tournament championship and a 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship that led to an appearance at the 2009 NCAA Division II College World Series. The Crusaders finished 2009 with a 40-26 record. He was named South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Following a trip to the 2008 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional, Smith’s pupil, second baseman Alex Castellanos, was drafted in the 10th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Castellanos last appeared in the Major Leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013. He played last season for Triple-A Norfolk. Smith aserved as the chair for the Conference Carolinas coaches while also being the chair for the Belmont Abbey coaches’ council. He was an active member of the community and served as the head coach of the Gaston Braves American Legion team from 2002-07, guiding them to a 99-62 record. Smith graduated from Pfeiffer University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sports management and a Bachelor of Science degree in business admin-istration. He played one season at Pfeiffer for former Appalachian State baseball coach and current Duke University coach Chris Pollard. Smith also earned a master’s degree in sports management from Califor-nia University of Pennsylvania in 2007. He is a native of Arcadia, Fla., and is the son of Sue Ellen and the late George Kilpatrick Smith. Smith and his wife, Rebecca, are the proud parents of two sons, Maddox Kilpatrick and Beckett Thomas, and a daughter, Georgia Grace.

ASSISTANT COACHES

JUSTINASPEGRENPITCHING COACHTHIRD SEASON

Justin Aspegren, who helped lead Santa Barbara City College to three championships in the

ultra-competitive Western State Conference over his last five seasons, is in his third season as Appalachian State baseball’s pitching coach. Aspegren remained with the Mountaineers after Kermit Smith was hired as App State’s head coach in the summer of 2016. In 2017, the Mountaineers posted their lowest team ERA since 2014 and the most strikeouts from the mound since 2010. In his first season as the Mountaineers’ pitching coach in 2016, Aspegren guided one of the nation’s youngest staffs. Fifty-two of Appalachian’s 54 games were started by true freshmen. Aspegren came to Appalachian State after eight seasons as the associate head coach and pitching coach at Santa Barbara City College. He helped lead the Vaqueros to a 192-134 record (.589).

BRITTJOHNSONASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASON

Britt Johnson is in his second season as an assistant after being hired on Aug. 9, 2016.

Johnson joined Appalachian after spending six years with head coach Kermit Smith at Lander University. He started as a volunteer coach and then was promoted after three years to a full-time assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Johnson also coached infielders and assisted with hitters while spending time as third-base coach. Johnson was with Smith during Lander’s two Division II College World Series trips in 2014 and 2016. Johnson attended East Carolina and played football for the Pirates as a long snapper under Skip Holtz.

ERIKLUNDEVOLUNTEER ASSISTANTSECOND SEASON

Erik Lunde is in his second sea-son as a volunteer assistant for the Mountaineers.

Lunde joined Appalachian in 2016 after spending the previous two years playing Minor League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Appearing in 117 games, Lunde had 94 hits, 47 RBIs, three stolen bases and a batting average of .247. In his last game, he had two hits, three runs and walked twice for the Bradenton Marauders, a Class A Advanced club. He was picked in the 18th round of the 2014 draft after playing for four years and becoming an All-American under Smith at Lander.
