Caldecote Local History Group

The Caldecote Local History Group now has a website. You can find us at Caldecotelhg.co.uk. It provides a link to our blog where you can read notes about additional information we need, what we are doing and readers can have their say. There are two items which we do need more information on. Does anyone know anything about Civil War artefacts being found by the bridge over the Bourne Brook. Murder in the Village We also want anything on a murder which took place where someone killed his brother with a bow and arrow. We think this occurred in West Drive but without a date it is difficult to trace the details. ______________________________

Caldecote School PTA AGM. Tuesday 18th October 8pm, Caldecote Primary School AGM. A review of the past years activities, accounts, voting in of new committee. Venue to be confirmed, either in the Children's Centre or in the main school hall. ______________________________

"Are you going my way?"

I need to get from Caldecote to Cowley Road, opposite the Science Park, Cambridge by 6:50 am (no later than 7.00am), Monday to Friday so if you could help me out it would be much appreciated. Obviously, I would contribute to fuel costs. If you can help then please call Jon on 01954 211603 on 07842 041360.

Caldecote, Dry Drayton and Hardwick Community Car Scheme As some of you will remember - though by the time you read this it will seem a very long time ago - we held another very successful coffee morning for the Community Car Scheme in Caldecote Village Hall on Friday July 22nd. This, I am sure, you will be pleased to hear, raised the excellent sum of £273.83 which will certainly help to keep us running over the next year. This year also was the first time, in return for a donation to the car scheme fund, we incorporated two other village groups raising funds for their good causes and who kindly added a donation into our efforts. One of them was JIB who were raising funds for Hardwick Scout and Guide Hut and the other was the Caldecote Book Group who were raising money for their annual Charity good cause which this year was for the Tear Fund East African Appeal. The books were amazingly popular and Chris Patel who was manning the book stall also very kindly dealt with selling our raffle tickets! So a big vote of appreciation to her and the book group. Also Care Network, the charity under which we come, were there to explain what they do, and there was also a short talk by their Welcome Home From Hospital service. We do hope everyone who came had a good morning out! I must explain all this was made possible by the Open Doors Charity Coffee Morning which takes place monthly in Caldecote Village Hall. The mornings are sponsored by the Churches and we

must offer a big vote of thanks to the brilliant team who run them. We could not have organised this without them. They set up the tables, decorate them, supply the tea and coffee etc. - and clear up and wash up afterwards! We simply could not have done all that. These Charity mornings are publicised in the Caldecote Journal. Each month they are for a different Charity. Do come if you can. If you need transport please also get in touch. I cannot finish without thanking our drivers who gave up their time to help with the transport and to help out on the morning. And this was in addition to all to all those many people in the community who kindly made and donated our delicious cakes and donated raffle prizes. We couldn't have managed without them! We really are enormously grateful to the considerable number of people who worked so hard behind the scenes. Lastly I must put in my plea for new drivers to come forward. We do urgently need more help in this field - particularly in Hardwick. All it needs is a CRB check which we can organise. Petrol costs are reimbursed at 45p per mile. If you can help in any way please ring Sheila on 01954 210638." Many thanks. Sheila Stephenson

Church Notes

Sunday October 16th at 11am – Childerley Harvest Festival. Do come along and support this special service in Childerley Chapel. Meet the new Bishop of Ely. Find out a bit more about him on the Ely Diocese website. http://www.ely.anglican.org/index.html

Welcome to St Michael’s – your parish church.

Although the building is a bit of a drive down the road, St Michael’s is there for everyone in Caldecote. You are welcome at all our services. Usually, our service on the second Sunday of the month is in the Village Hall, with worship and activities for all ages. This Autumn the schedule is a little different. In October we’re having an Autumn Lunch – should be fun – but in November we join our neighbours

in Toft for Remembrance Sunday on the 13th. The next week, November 20th, is a joint service for all the churches in the area. If you have never been, it’s quite an occasion! Come and join with hundreds of other people to worship God together. Genr8 will be running their usual excellent children’s activities.

Supporting St Michael’s

The Friends of St Michael’s do an amazing job of raising funds to preserve and update our ancient building. We couldn’t survive without them. But there are also a lot of costs which the Friends’ work is not designed to support. Running repairs, heating, and paying for a slice of my time as the Rector of villages in this area all provide expenses, and at the moment we are running at quite a big short fall.

Page 5: 2011 Oct-Nov Journal

At the moment, St Michael’s is subsidised by the other villages of the area, but we really ought to be paying our way. If you would like to support the life and ministry of St Michael’s, or to review your regular giving, please contact our treasurer, Dave Sage, 19 Kingfisher Close, Bourn, CB23 2TJ. [email protected]

And if you are a regular member of another church, please do keep us in your prayers – we need your support in that way too!

Summer at St Michael’s ….

Flower Festival June 18/19: This was a great success and the Flower Arrangements were wonderful! Everyone chose to do an arrangement inspired by a story from the Old Testament part of the Bible. Read them again in your Bible! These were the stories: Manna from Heaven (Exodus Ch 16), Ruth, gleaning in the fields (Ruth Ch 2), Moses and the Burning Bush (Exodus Ch 3), Daniel’s friends in the Fiery Furnace (Daniel Ch 3), The Garden of Eden (Genesis Chs 1,2,3), God created, and separated the land and the sea (Genesis Ch 1), Joseph’s coat of many colours (Genesis Ch 37), and Jacob’s vision of a ladder, with angels ascending & descending (Genesis Ch 28).

Children’s Art CompetitionJune 18/19: Another event inspired by stories from the Old Testament part of the Bible – and a huge success! We had 32 entries. Our winners were: Aged 4-5: Saskia Monk; Aged 6-8: Sarah McLaren; Aged 9-11: Rebecca Watts. There was also a prize for the Churchwarden’s Choice – that was won by Amy Sylvester-Bradley. Not

only are all the names of all the entrants on our website, but ALSO ALL THE PICTURES ! Wonderful! Look them up on caldecotechurch.org.uk Calling all keyboard players… We need someone to help on the Sunday Music Rota to play the little Chamber Organ once a month. Which w/ends are negotiable, so if you go away things can be jiggled….The organ has only 4.5 octaves, 4 Stops and no pedals or swell. Like a piano, really! What is more, you only have 4 hymns to play per Sunday. If you wish, you can play as people come in to/ leave the church too! Contact Revd Mike Booker 01223 260095 Churchwarden’s Sabbatical ... Hello everyone, Just to let you know that I am taking a year out ..... youngsters do this all the time before Uni or whenever! It’s my turn, and an opportunity has suddenly come up for me! I am off to Spain. I have let my house out, and I will be away from Caldecote from September 1st 2011 till July 31st 2012. (Still on email, of course) Things will be fine at St Michael’s whilst I am away, you’ll see! Please don’t PANIC ((-: None of us is indispensable, after all. It will mean, however, that Mike and the PCC will need some extra support from everyone. I am sure you will all rise to the task. God bless. You will be in my prayers, of course, as I hope I will be in yours. With all best wishes and love from Annie Nason.

Madingley Race to Infinity: Broadband Rollout Update For those wandering what has been happening since January 2011 when the announcement was made, rest assured it is happening, and there has been a lot of planning work going on behind the scenes. Due to the complexity of the engineering process, it takes 12-15 months from start of planning to installation of the fibre in an area. The deployment for Madingley exchange is now in month 9 of that process, which has required more careful planning because the exchange was not on the normal installation program. The fibre equipment for Madingley will be installed in the Cherry Hinton exchange. The rollout design will deliver around 90% fibre coverage of the exchange area, using a mix of both Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology, but this could be affected by unexpected planning problems or complexities during the progress of the build. Planning activities will be completed by September 2011 and build work will then commence. You will begin to see evidence of the work that is underway. This will include the installation of new equipment such as green cabinets along the roadside, and our engineers putting in place additional footway boxes plus many hundreds of metres of tubing and fibre optic cable both within the underground network and to our distribution poles. The work will take some weeks /months to complete so not everyone will be able to order a service from day one.

However once the build phase starts residents in the community will be able to visit bt.com/infinity to check individual phone numbers to see whether and when you are able to order BT Infinity. If all goes well we should be able to receive the first order for BT Infinity in your area from February 2012. For more detailed information, please visit the Madingley Exchange blog at www.RaceToInfinity.org.uk or email me [email protected] . Tumi Hawkins Madingley Race to Infinity Co-ordinator

During a bus visit in Caldecote one Wednesday evening, a member of the Caldecote Feast organising committee visited the bus asking if any young people would be interested in helping out as volunteers at the Feast this summer. The youth workers later spoke to the young people and were pleased to get a very positive response. Contact details were exchanged and 15 young people were allocated tasks for the day. I will leave it to the words of the Chair of the Committee to comment further: “Can you please pass on my thanks to the Young People of Caldecote who turned up on Saturday to assist with the Feast. The conditions when they first arrived were horrible, but not one of them complained. They were keen to get the parade going despite the weather and more than happy to take up their positions. Ultimately, we had to cancel the parade, but we then had them volunteering to do stalls etc. They should feel proud of the commitment they showed to the day.”

Friends of Caldecote Church … reviving our heritage

Holidays being over, the Friends group met to start planning autumn and winter activities and think of more ways to enjoy ourselves and make further progress next year. Ideas are still at an early stage so if anyone has suggestions please bring them along to our next meeting :

8pm, on Thursday 20 October at 1 Porthmore Close.

If you can’t come, please get in touch anyway.

Heating the church ?

We don’t have enough funds to renew the church heating yet, and the best form of heating is still being discussed. However, we do have significant funds, and it will be good to make a start, so it has been suggested that the first step might be a water supply for the church. Even if this doesn’t raise the temperature, it would let us make a cup of coffee!

Page 9: 2011 Oct-Nov Journal

Every penny counts - Jam Jar collection

Thanks to our big delivery team, almost every house in Caldecote accepted a Jam Jar in which to collect small change. And the first of the jars have filled up – we have already received £65 in 3 jars! We hope Caldecote’s purses and trouser pockets have been saved from the wear of heavy coppers! We plan to start collecting the jars soon after this Journal issue is distributed, so if you’d like your jar to be full, there are still a few more days. Collecting and counting nearly 750 jars of coins will take quite a while, so bear with us if there is a delay before we come to collect yours. We’ll report in future articles how much the pennies make.

Ideas for Activities

Through ‘Ride & Stride’ on 10th September we were encouraged to explore as many churches as possible, either cycling or walking.

If you are coming to the school Christmas Fayre, you can support us by visiting our unique stall.

The Summer Concert was enjoyed by so many people this year that we are starting to plan for another next year.

Open Gardens will again be a big part of next year’s activities. We are always on the lookout for new gardens to include. If you have sometimes wondered whether us locals would be interested in seeing your garden .. we almost certainly would! Please consider this while you do the autumn digging, and then contact Roger or Lisa (details below).

Remember, our website always provides other ways you can help: www.caldecotefriends.org.uk e.g.

o Ask Amazon to donate – they’ll give whenever you buy through Amazon, so a way of fund-raising that is totally painless!

o Sponsorship made easy: our website is there to help, and it adds gift-aid.

o Christmas! Birthdays! Greetings! Use our Photo Cards, or give our Cookbooks: We have lovely Greetings Cards for sale in aid of Friends’ funds: contact Lisa (see below). Or you could give a special Caldecote Cookbook: contact Roger (see below).

Thank you to everyone for all the continuing help and ideas. For any further ideas or helping hands:

Contact either Roger Sylvester-Bradley on 01 954 210560 or [email protected] or Lisa Hazel on 01 954 210021 or [email protected]

Also, please look on our website: www.caldecotefriends.org.uk

They planted some different types of seeds and found after the summer holiday that the carrots and tomatoes

were ready to have for snack. The children were excited picking the carrots and spent a long time washing all the mud off, talking about the different sizes, etc. Yes, they enjoyed having crunchy carrots for snack. We sent out postcards, “Catch me being good”, over the summer asking parents to log all the good things their child did or achieved. Being three can be tricky and we can sometimes miss seeing the positive things our children do. We have had some very good responses coming in such as helping to paint a room, being kind to a sibling, feeding and dressing themselves, waiting at road crossing for mum to help them cross, etc. The children will be sharing these postcards in small group over the next few weeks by talking about what we did well. Staff We would like to say farewell to Claire Gower who has been with the setting for 3 years and thank her for all her hard work and commitment. She is taking on a Teaching Assistant position in Cambridge. We wish her all the best with her new job. Annual General Meeting (AGM) – 11 October 2011 Caldecote Playgroup is run by a voluntary committee made up of parents whose children attend playgroup sessions. Taylor Wimpey Talks are still taking place over the transfer of the remaining public open spaces for both phases one and two. As information is changing all the time, please look for the latest on the Parish Council minutes (on the Caldecote Parish Council web site http://www.caldecote.gov.uk). Work is continuing on the road/sewer remedials as requested/identified by CCC and Anglian Water from their site inspections on Strympole Way and Clare Drive. Once completed this will enable TWEA to progress the adoption of the roads and sewers on both phases at Caldecote. Work is starting on the various landscaping remedials on Strympole Way. Some of the work, however, will not be able to be started until the Autumn due to the nature of the works involved i.e. native bare root planting. When the contractors start the work there may be an initial visual effect on the already established landscaping (e.g. thinning out of certain areas) but this is required but this is required to remove overgrowth and to promote the health of the shrubs. Sports Pavilion The pavilion structure is now taking shape – the brickwork and roofing is currently being completed. Take a stroll up to the recreation ground to see how it looks, or visit the Parish Council’s website for the plans and picture gallery. Please note that there will continue to be increased traffic past the Furlong Way play areas to and from the recreation ground as the build progresses.

The pavilion build is being overseen by the Parish Council’s Pavilion Committee. All residents are welcome to be present and all minutes are published on the Parish Council’s website. Daffodil planting The annual daffodil planting will take place in October. Please keep an eye on the noticeboard and on the website for further details. All volunteers (and their spades) are welcome to help increase the display for Spring 2012. Jubilee Oak As part of the Parish Planting Scheme, Caldecote will be receiving two oaks to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Parish Council website The Parish Council website has been relaunched – please visit www.caldecote.gov.uk to see our new look! There are links to the District and County Councillor’s websites and village organisations and there will be regular updates and village news items. Any suggestions as to further content you would find useful should be made to the Parish Clerk. Play Areas Please would you ensure that any personal play equipment used on the play areas is taken home at the end of the day and not left out overnight. Please ensure young children are supervised at all times. Recreation Ground Football has started for the 2011/12 season and pitches have been marked out on the right hand side of the field. 22nd World Scout Jamboree, Sweden 2011 I have been an Explorer Scout with Wildcat Explorers in Hardwick for nearly 3 years, and a Rainbow leader in the village. Two years ago I applied to go on the 22nd World Scout Jamboree, Sweden 2011. I was accepted and set about fundraising in

order to go. I achieved this thanks to the support of many of you, and for that I am extremely grateful. I truly had an amazing time and I can’t thank you all enough for the support you gave me leading up to this trip of a lifetime. We, the Cambridgeshire ‘Dukzs’ unit, four leaders, 36 very excited scouts and guides and five ducks (our mighty mascots) all left London Heathrow on the 24th July 2011, destination Copenhagen, Denmark, for the Uk’s Pre-Jam party. In Copenhagen the UK contingent organised a full schedule of activities including rib boating, Tivoli Gardens and site seeing along with many more. Our three days in Copenhagen ended with a massive party with the 4,000 Scouts from the UK, to get everyone in the mood for Sweden. It was fantastic fun, Alphabeat played and they were brilliant! Next stop Sweden. Sweden, what can I say other than it was one of the best things I have ever done. There were representatives from every country in the world except five, bringing the total population of the Jamboree to 40,000 participants, which is a lot of tents! We were camped very near Four Seasons Square where most of the activities were. There were set activities during the day ranging from reflective, cultural and environmental activities to a wooden obstacle course. Then from 3pm onwards you could choose to do any ‘spontaneous’ activities such as water zorbing, a wooden Tivoli theme park or even ice skating. Instead you could just go and sit in a food house and try some new foods, or go and meet a new person from a country you did not know much about.

I met some amazing people on site and we really bonded as a unit. We were so tired after the 12 days in Sweden, yet so happy after our amazing time, but we still had Home-Hospitality to look forward to in Portugal. We stayed with some Portuguese Scouts from Vila Real in Northern Portugal. They were all really nice and very hospitable. Our unit were guests of the City, so we had to meet the mayor and take part in a procession. We also went swimming and tasted the local port (Vila Real is very near Porto). It was a lovely way to end our journey and we are now looking forward to the Portuguese Scouts coming to stay with us next year! I had a brilliant time; it was all so much fun. It is hard to choose the ‘best moment’ but I have managed to narrow it down to my three top memories; 1. Turning around at the opening ceremony and seeing the sheer number of people there, all with one really big thing in common- Scouting! 2. The atmosphere on site in Sweden was ecstatic, everyone was so happy, having such a good time and making new friends despite language barriers. 3. As the fireworks went off at the closing ceremony, there were people around me crying with tears of joy and sadness, it meant that much too all 40,000 of us! Thank you to everyone who helped me and our unit get to Sweden. I could talk about it for hours, so if you would like any more information or about Scouts feel free to ask me. Gorgeous Grasses and Dazzling Daisies The Systematic Beds, which group plants in their families, are fascinating at any time of year. In most botanic gardens, systematic (or ‘order’) beds are long and rectangular but in Cambridge, they are all irregular, curving island beds. The visual effect in the height of summer is a great kaleidoscopic mosaic of flowering plants covering some three acres. In late summer and early autumn, the beds devoted to grasses (Graminae) and the daisy family (Compositae) are stunning. The grasses occupy several beds in the central oval that is devoted to

Page 17: 2011 Oct-Nov Journal

monocotyledons – plants that germinate with one seed leaf, such a lilies, grasses and alliums – which constitute about 20% of all flowering plants. They make a tapestry of tactile textures from the feathery plumes of many different varieties of Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) to the soft bristly 'caterpillars' of the Pennisetum flowers and the hazy sprays of Panicum. The golden and silvery tones create a muted metallic shimmer in the air, accompanied by a gentle rustling as the lightest breeze rustles through. It is impossible not to run a hand over the soft, billowing awns! The central oval of monocotyledons are surrounded by the dicotyledons – those plants that germinate with two seed leaves – that make up 80% of flowering plants. On the north side, you will find a dazzling display of late-flowering members of the daisy (Compositae) family in a sizzling-hot palette: lemon-yellow perennial sunflowers, tangerine-coloured Tithonia and bright pink Cosmos. The Botanic Garden is open 10am – 6pm through the summer months. Admission is £4 (£3.50) or join the Friends & help the Garden grow! Community First Responder Scheme Community First Responders are ordinary members of the public who volunteer to do something extraordinary. There are Community First responder Groups all over Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The idea behind the scheme is a simple one… local people can get to local emergencies very quickly because they are just around the corner. Time is a very important factor and ambulances can’t be everywhere at once. Why do we need a Community First Responder Scheme? The first eight minutes are the most vital for a collapsed person and if we can get someone who is trained in First aid and the use of a defibrillator to that patient then their chances of survival increase significantly. By providing relatively simple medical treatment quickly, Community First Responders can literally make the difference between life and death. Who can be a First Responder and what does it involve? First Responders are:

• Over 18 and under 70

• Have a full current driving licence and access to a car

• Completes a course and competency test provided by NHS

• Are medically and physically fit to fulfil the role

• Agrees to a Criminal Records check.

Page 18: 2011 Oct-Nov Journal

Once your training has been completed you will be able to join your fellow responders on the scheme’s rota. This means having the kit bag and being available to respond to local 999 calls when the Ambulance control centre calls you. What emergencies do First Responders attend? First Responders attend local emergencies such as chest pains, cardiac arrest, breathing problems, strokes and fainting. They do not attend trauma, road traffic accidents or children under the age of 8 years. Friends of Comberton Library (FOCAL)

The next meeting of FOCAL will be in the library on 24th October at 7.30 when the decisions made at the County Cabinet meeting on 27th September and full Council meeting on 18th October on the Library Service Review will be known and we can confirm a social programme including events for the week beginning 14th November. For further information, please email [email protected]

Take part in the WI's birthday action day! The 16 September 2011 marks the 96th anniversary of the first WI meeting, and the NFWI is calling on members to celebrate it by visiting their local library. (You don't have to be a WI member to take part Comberton Library is open 2pm to 7pm that day, pop in and borrow an extra book). Information about the WI Love your libraries campaign here : http://www.thewi.org.uk/standard.aspx?id=24427

7th to 12th November - Comberton Library closed for installation of self-service technology and work on windows and heating.

Library reopens 14th November - a good excuse for FOCAL members to stage events (perhaps including cake). Below is correspondance with Library Managers

Is there any support that FOCAL can give to the reopening of Comberton Library after the self-service technology is installed, and the heating system/windows upgraded? We have been discussing author

visits and social events and it might be an idea to tie them in for that week. Cake always goes down well. There is probably an established programme based on the experience of other libraries who have already had the system installed but I thought I'd get in touch before contacting the group. Suzan Griffiths ______________________________ Addenbrooke’s team gets personal in battle against breast cancer Staff make personal plea to launch 2011 Pink Rose Appeal Staff at the Cambridge Breast Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, have launched the 2011 Pink Rose Appeal with a personal plea to Caldecote residents to support this year’s fundraising campaign and help save the lives of more local women. With breast cancer now affecting one in eight women [1], nurses, surgeons, oncologists and scientists from Addenbrooke’s are urging people within the hospital’s catchment area to celebrate women in their local community and host a fundraising Pink Rose Party, ideally during October – breast cancer awareness month. Every year, money generated by the Pink Rose Appeal goes directly to the Cambridge Breast Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s, where it helps fund life saving clinical research trials. To kick start the 2011 Pink Rose Appeal, staff gathered with ten balloons in the memorial garden at the Cambridge Breast Unit; eight pink

Page 20: 2011 Oct-Nov Journal

and two white. The pink balloons symbolised the 80% of women, treated at Addenbrooke’s for breast cancer, who will live for at least ten years after diagnosis; a survival rate that exceeds the national figure of 72% and is on a par with some of the best breast cancer centres in Europe – largely because of Pink Rose Appeal funds. In contrast, the two white balloons highlighted the plight of the remaining 20% of women who, despite the very best medical intervention, still unfortunately succumb to the disease. Dawn Chapman, Consultant Nurse at the Cambridge Breast Unit said: “Addenbrooke’s is one of the best places to be treated for breast cancer anywhere in the world and we are incredibly proud of our survival rates. But sadly, for two out of every ten women, the numbers are meaningless. Statistics help illustrate the enormity of breast cancer but it’s the personal stories behind the disease that have the most impact; the wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and best friends, who we meet and treat, and who battle so hard to stay alive, but sadly lose the fight.” “Every day at Addenbrooke’s we see how personal the struggle against breast cancer is: it’s personal for each woman that visits our unit and receives an extraordinarily difficult diagnosis; it’s personal for her family and friends; and it’s personal for hospital staff who get to know each patient and witness the devastating impact breast cancer can have. To save more lives we need to play breast cancer at its own game. Like each woman we treat, every case of breast cancer is unique and needs a tailor made treatment programme that

matches the patient’s individual genetic profile – giving her the very best chance of survival. The Pink Rose Appeal enables us to do just this. Taking a personal approach we are making great progress in the battle against breastcancer. But our work must continue if we are to help the thousands of women who will pass through our unit in years to come.” Supporting the Pink Rose Appeal is simple. All you have to do is plan a get together with friends, family or colleagues – and ask them to pay their way on the day. It could be a dinner, picnic, tea party, cake bake, lunch or, if you like, something much more spectacular. This year Pink Rose Parties taking place include: a Pink Rose craft evening; a 60th birthday celebration; a fundraising jewellery event; and even the renewal of some wedding vows. For more information or to obtain a fundraising pack, please contact the Pink Rose team on 01223 217757 or by email at: [email protected] About ACT: ACT is the registered charity for Cambridge University Hospitals, which includes Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals. ACT raises additional funds to help make a difference for patients at the hospitals. Charitable donations have bought extra high-tech equipment, paid for additional specialist staff, contributed to environmental enhancements and funded research to improve the understanding of conditions and find possible cures for patients in Cambridge and around the world. ACT manages the charitable funds in an effective way and aims to invest and disburse money successfully, ensuring that funds are used for the purposes for which they are raised.
