    Introduction

    Fire Protection

Fire Prevention is a critical consideration or all those who are responsible or creating the design, speci cation andconstruction o new buildings. It also has to be considered in the ongoing maintenance o occupied premesis.

The causes o re vary and are unpredictable. O ten the cause is outside the area o infuence o design engineers and

planners. But the ability to control the spread o re once it has started can still be infuenced.

E ective re ghting within a building is generally achieved through a combination o active and passive FireStop systems.

Active FireStop SytemsActive re prevention systems are designed to react to the outbreak o a re which is then suppressed with the help osprinkler systems, halogen installations, re extinguishers or other proactive machanical systems. The e ects o the remay also be lessened by the removal o smoke rom the equation. By including alarms and emergency lighting, activesystems also serve to provide escape paths or people inside the building.

Passive Fire Prevention SytemsPassive re prevention systems are intergrated in the structure o a building ensuring that once the re starts it is limited

to a re compartment that is composed o re rated walls, foor and ceilings.

To maintain the FireStopping integrity o walls, foors and ceilings, all gaps, openings and channels are to be sealed toprevent the escape o re and smoke.

There ore the Control o Fire Spread and limitation o damage is principally achieved through the compartments o abuilding. These compartments are bounded by re resisting elements: Walls / Floors / CeilingsFire resisting elements are o ten breached to permit access or services or unctional joints. Cables / Pipes / Ventilation systemsGaps between re resisting elements around the penetrations must be sealed so that the re integrity o the re-resistingelement is maintained.

National RegulationsThe ollowing national regulations are published as statutory instruments by Parliament with respect to li e sa ety purposes:

Building Regulations (England & Wales) 1991 These regulations are expressed as unctional requirements. Approved Document B (2000 Edition) Fire Sa ety, gives non-manditory guidance.

Building Standards (Scotland) 2001 These are expressed as unctional requirements. All o the provisions o Technical Standards Part D and Part E are mandatory. These provisions are wavered only by means o a relaxation.

Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994Basic unctional requirements with approval solutions are given in Technical Booklet E which is similar to England andWales Approved Document B.

Building Regulations (Republic of Ireland) 1997The building regulations in the republic o Ireland are similar in arrangement and content to the England & Wales BuildingRegulations and are covered by Technical Guidance Document B.

    Q. Why does FireStopping need to be carried out?Approved Document B states the following points with regard to reinstallation of re rated elements:

I a re separating element is to be efective then every joint, or imper ection o t, or opening to allow services to pass through the element should be adequaby sealing or FireStopping so that the re resistance o the element is not impaired 11.2

This is quite categorical in its assertion that every opening in a re rated element needs to be reinstalled.

In addition to any other provisions in this document or FireStopping:a. Joints between re separating elements should be FireStopped andb. All openings or pipes, ducts, conduits or cables to pass through any part o a re separating element should be:i. kept as ew in number as possible andii. kept as small as practical andiii. FireStopped (which in the case o a pipe or duct should allow or thermal movement) 11.12

The nal sentence states that FireStopping materials should allow for thermal movement rules when usingsand/cement and concrete for lling round services.

Technical Standards (Scotland) state:A compartment wall and compartment foor must have no openings and must provide a barrier to re between the parts o a building to be divided including any roo space.

Except for:Where there is a service opening -

    i. Which is o suitable construction or where the services are suitably protected so that in the event o a re the level o resa ety per ormance required o the compartment wall or compartment foor is maintained, andii. Which is suitably FireStopped D3.14

BS7671 further adds:Where a wiring system passes through elements o building construction such as foors, walls, roo s, ceilings, partitions or cavity barriers the openings remaining a ter passage o the wiring systems shall be sealed according to the degree o

re resistance required o the element concerned. 527-02-01where a wiring system such as conduit, cable ducting, cable trunking, busbar or busbar trunking penetrates an element o building construction having speci ed re resistance it shall be internally sealed so as to maintain the degree o re resistance o the respective element as well as being externally sealed to maintain the required re resistance. 527-02- 01

    Q. Why do you have to have all your FireStop products tested?

The building Regulations Approved Document B s tates the following with regard to testing The product should be in accordance with a speci cation or design which has been shown by tests to be capable omeeting that per ormance or have been assessed rom test evidence against appropriate standards Appendix A 1A

Provide a propriety sealing system which has been shown by test to maintain re resistance o the wall, foor or cavity barrier. B3 11.6

Technical Standards (Scotland) require:The requirements o D3.14, D4.7, D5.8 and D6.7 or FireStopping o service openings and D6.9 or FireStopping will be met in the case - When di erent movement is anticipated, whether in normal use or during re exposure by the use o a proprietary sealant or sealing system which has shown by test its ability to maintain the required level o sa ety per ormance under the conditions appropriate to its end use B2.2.1

    scherInsulatedFireSleeves-FiFS

scher Insulated Fire Sleeves are a unique combination o Mineral Wooland Intumescent Graphite that provide all the bene ts o Mineral Woolsthermal, noise and re bene ts with an added intumescent e ect.

For insulated pipes it is normally necessary to remove the insulation atpoint o penetration to enable standard pipe collars to close plastic pipes. This removal o insulation results in condensation on cold pipes and loss othermal per ormance on hot pipes.

ischer Intumescent Linear Seal is a highly compressible strip ormed bylaminating re retardant oam to a graphite based intumescent polymer.

ischer Intumescent Linear Seal is a compressible product to ll re rated joints in compartment foors and walls. Tested to BS476 Part 20, ischer

Cavity FireStop Expansion provides up to 4 hours re protection.ischer Intumescent Linear Seal is delivered to site in pre- ormed sections.

The section size depends on the joint size and the re rating that needs tobe achieved (See Fire Rating).

ischer Intumescent Linear Seal is simply compressed by hand and is thenpushed into the gap. Adjacent pieces o the product are simply buttedtogether. There is no need to use any adhesives or intumescent sealant inconjunction with the product. In a re, the graphite based intumescent material swells to orm a hard charwhich prevents the passage o re and smoke through the joint.
